Carolina Panthers players who are free agents in 2025

With the trade deadline now behind us, let’s take a look at the Panthers who are set to become free agents following the 2024 season:

(This story was updated to add new information.)

The 2024 NFL trade deadline has come and gone, and it didn’t go without a few moves from the Carolina Panthers.

Last week, the team shipped off wideout Diontae Johnson to the Baltimore Ravens in a trade involving a late-round pick swap for the 2025 draft. And yesterday, in a much more favorable return, they sent fellow receiver Jonathan Mingo over to the Dallas Cowboys.

Panthers defense features 4 ex-Broncos players

Panthers DC Ejiro Evero has four ex-Broncos players on his defense, headlined by linebacker Josey Jewell.

The Carolina Panthers’ defense will look familiar when the Denver Broncos host the NFC South opponent in Week 8.

Panthers defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero held that same role with the Broncos in 2022, and he has recruited four ex-Denver defenders to Carolina.

The list of players is headlined by inside linebacker Josey Jewell, who started 58 games for the Broncos from 2018-2023. Carolina also has outside linebacker Thomas Incoom, who spent last season in Denver.

The Panthers also have two former Broncos defensive linemen in DeShawn Williams (2018; 2019; 2020-2022) and Jonathan Harris (2019-2023), who just landed in Charlotte earlier this week.

Additionally, Carolina also has ex-Denver running back Mike Boone on the practice squad. Sunday will be a bit of a homecoming game for these five players and Evero.

1. ILB Josey Jewell

2. OLB Thomas Incoom

3. DL DeShawn Williams

4. DL Jonathan Harris

Host of ex-Broncos appear on NFL’s transaction wire

Ben DiNucci, Jonathan Harris and Andrew Beck were among the former Broncos players who showed up on the NFL’s transaction wire on Tuesday.

Tuesday was a busy day for former Denver Broncos players.

Seven ex-Broncos appeared on the NFL’s transaction wire on Oct. 22. Here’s a quick rundown of each move.

  • DL Jonathan Harris was signed by the Panthers (off the Dolphins’ practice squad). Harris will face Denver, his former team, on Sunday.
  • WR Phillip Dorsett signed to the Falcons’ practice squad. Smith spent last season on the Broncos’ practice squad.
  • FB Andrew Beck was cut from the Packers’ practice squad. Beck spent 2019-2022 in Denver.
  • QB Ben DiNucci worked out for the Saints. DiNucci was the Broncos’ third-string quarterback in 2023. New Orleans tried and failed to poach DiNucci from Denver’s practice squad last fall.
  • WR Kaden Davis worked out for the Colts. Davis has had three different stints with the Broncos, including two short stints on the practice squad this season.
  • WR Tre’Quan Smith was released from injured reserve by the Lions. Smith spent part of last season on Denver’s practice squad.
  • RB Tony Jones worked out for the Texans. Jones went to training camp with the Broncos in 2023.

Tuesday was a relatively quiet day in Denver, but seven former Broncos players made headlines elsewhere.

Panthers sign veteran DL off Dolphins practice squad

The Dolphins have an open spot on their practice squad after Jonathan Harris was signed by the Panthers.

Defensive lineman Jonathan Harris is joining the Carolina Panthers after he was signed off the Miami Dolphins’ practice squad Tuesday.

Harris, 28, signed a one-year with the Dolphins in the 2024 offseason after spending most of the last five years with the Denver Broncos. The lineman originally signed with the Chicago Bears as an undrafted free agent in 2019, but was claimed off waivers by the Broncos during his rookie season.

In 31 career games with Denver, Harris recorded one sack, six tackles for loss, and 80 tackles.

The Dolphins signed several defensive lineman in free agency, but cut Harris at the end of camp and added him on the practice squad.

In September, Miami also added defensive lineman Neil Farrell Jr., a former Las Vegas Raiders fourth-round pick, to their practice squad.

None of the five defensive linemen on the Dolphins’ active roster — Calais Campbell, Da’Shawn Hand, Benito Jones, Brandon Pili, and Zach Sieler — have missed a game so far in 2024.

Panthers release former 1st-round pick amidst flurry of moves on Tuesday

The Panthers announce a handful of moves on Tuesday.

The Carolina Panthers are really trying to make things work on defense.

Tuesday afternoon played host to a flurry of moves for the team, as they announced three additions and five departures. Among the five players on the outs is outside linebacker Shaq Lawson, who was signed to the practice squad a few weeks ago.

Lawson, a Central, S.C. native, was selected with the 19th overall pick of the 2016 draft by the Buffalo Bills. The Clemson University product was elevated to the main roster for this past Sunday’s 40-7 loss to the Washington Commanders, where he recorded 14 defensive snaps.

Carolina also released fellow pass rusher Marquis Haynes Sr., who has now spent each of his seven NFL campaigns with the Panthers. Haynes Sr. saw action in Week 6 and Week 7, totaling one pressure over 41 snaps.

In addition, the Panthers waived inside linebacker Chandler Wooten and defensive lineman T.J. Smith from the 53-man roster while releasing defensive lineman Jayden Peevy from the practice squad.

Those moves helped make room for the signings of defensive lineman Jonathan Harris and outside linebacker Cam Gill to the active roster and rookie center Andrew Raym to the practice squad.

Panthers reportedly signing 2 players to active roster

The Panthers are reportedly set to sign a pair of defenders.

The Carolina Panthers are continuing to shuffle around their defense.

According to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, the team is signing outside linebacker Cam Gill and defensive lineman Jonathan Harris to their active roster. Gill will come over from the Detroit Lions’ practice squad while Harris moves on from the Miami Dolphins’ practice squad.

Gill spent the offseason in Carolina. The former Tampa Bay Buccaneer appeared in the team’s preseason finale against the Buffalo Bills, where he injured his ankle.

The Panthers would later release Gill off injured reserve on Sept. 5.

Harris spent the bulk of his four NFL campaigns in Denver, including the 2022 season under current Panthers defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero. The 6-foot-5, 295-pounder played in 31 games for the Broncos—amassing 80 combined tackles, a sack and six quarterback hits between 2019 and 2023.

Panthers sign ex-Denver defensive lineman ahead of Broncos game

Ex-Broncos DC Ejiro Evero is adding ex-Denver DL Jonathan Harris to the Panthers’ rotation ahead of a trip to the Mile High City in Week 8.

The Carolina Panthers are adding a former Denver Broncos defensive lineman ahead of their trip to the Mile High City in Week 8.

The Panthers signed defensive lineman Jonathan Harris off the Miami Dolphins’ practice squad on Tuesday, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Carolina also added Cam Gill off the Detroit Lions’ practice squad.

Harris (6-5, 295 pounds) played for the Broncos from 2019-2023. He is familiar with the Panthers’ scheme after having played under Carolina defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero, who held that role in Denver in 2022.

Harris, 28, had the best season of his career last fall, dressing for all 17 games while earning five starts. He totaled 43 tackles (including four behind the line), four quarterback hits and one sack with the Broncos in 2023.

Denver opted not to re-sign Harris when he hit free agency this spring and the defensive lineman landed in Miami. He will now join the Panthers just in time to face his old team.

Analyzing the terms of new Dolphins DL Jonathan Harris’ contract

Contract details for new Dolphins DL Jonathan Harris.

The Miami Dolphins lost two key players on their defensive line this offseason in Christian Wilkins and Raekwon Davis, who signed with the Las Vegas Raiders and Indianapolis Colts, respectively.

With that knowledge, Dolphins general manager Chris Grier signed a number of free agents to play the interior, including Jonathan Harris.

Harris, 27, signed a one-year deal worth $1.79 million to join the Dolphins after stints with the Chicago Bears and Denver Broncos.

According to Over the Cap, Harris will receive a $1.2 million base salary ($325,000 guaranteed) along with a $300,000 signing bonus and $290,000 in per-game roster bonuses. His cap hit for the 2024 season is set to be $1.79 million.

The contract doesn’t guarantee Harris a spot on the roster in September, as Miami could save $1.17 million while incurring a dead-cap hit of just $625,000 (the signing bonus and guaranteed salary) by releasing him.

If he wants to make the 53-man and earn playing time, Harris will have to beat out the other veterans who were signed in free agency as well as Da’Shawn Hand and Brandon Pili who returned from last year’s team.

Broncos won’t re-sign DL Jonathan Harris before free agency begins

The Broncos will not pick up Jonathan Harris’ restricted free agent tender, allowing him to test unrestricted free agency next week.

The Denver Broncos have re-signed two exclusive rights free agents — linebacker Jonas Griffith and wide receiver Michael Bandy — and attention now turns to the club’s restricted free agents.

The Broncos have two restricted free agents this year (defensive lineman Jonathan Harris and offensive lineman Quinn Bailey), according to OverTheCap.com. The team has made a decision on one of them.

Denver informed Harris on Wednesday that he will not receive a restricted free agent tender, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero first reported. That means the Broncos are allowing the defensive lineman to hit unrestricted free agency next week.

It’s still possible that Denver could bring Harris back in 2024. An original-round tender would have paid Harris $2.985 million this season. The league minimum for a player with three years of experience like Harris is $1.055 million. So if the lineman does not draw a lot of interest on the open market, he might be willing to return to the Broncos for less than his declined tender.

Harris, 27, signed with Denver in 2019. He has dressed for 31 games over the last five seasons, earning four starts in 2022 and five starts in 2023. He has recorded 73 tackles, six quarterback hits and one sack with the Broncos.

Broncos offseason roster: No. 92, DL Jonathan Harris

Entering his fourth year with the Broncos, Jonathan Harris has totaled 30 tackles in 14 appearances since 2019.

[connatix div_id=”3f8b015acdd24c648befc5d5dac47469″ player_id=”afe1e038-d3c2-49c0-922d-6511a229f69c” cid=”7cbcea0d-4ce2-4c75-9a8d-fbe02a192c24″]

Broncos Wire’s 90-man offseason roster series continues today with a look at third-year defensive lineman Jonathan Harris, No. 92.

Before the Broncos: Harris (6-5, 295 pounds) played college football at Lindenwood, totaling 183 tackles (38.5 behind the line), six sacks, four forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, two pass breakups and one interception in fours years (43 games) with the college football’s Lions.

Harris was signed by the Chicago Bears as an undrafted free agent in 2019 and he played in two games before being waived.

Broncos tenure: Denver claimed Harris off waivers in 2019 and he’s been with the team since then. He is technically entering his fourth year in the NFL but is considered a third-year player because of the league’s six-game stipulation for an accrued season. Bouncing between the active roster and practice squad, Harris has appeared in 14 games over the last three seasons with the Broncos, totaling 30 tackles (two behind the line) and two quarterback hits.

Chances to make the 53-man roster: Given Denver’s limited depth on the defensive line, Harris should have a decent shot to make the active roster. If he doesn’t end up making the 53-man roster, though, Harris would likely be a top candidate for the practice squad.
