The Green Bay Packers sign a former Wisconsin OL to their practice squad

Two former Wisconsin Badger offensive linemen spent the offseason with the Green Bay Packers—Cole Van Lanen and Jon Dietzen.

Both were released before the beginning of the 2021 season. Van Lanen signed to the team’s practice squad, while Dietzen was forced to hit the free-agent market.

Well, Dietzen is now back with the team on its practice squad as the Packers signed him after placing Jonathan Garvin on the reserve/COVID-19 list and promoting Ben Braden to the active roster.

Both Wisconsin products will now work with the Packers until another spot opens up on the active roster and a backup offensive lineman is needed.

The Packers waive a former Wisconsin Badger offensive lineman

The Packers waive a former Wisconsin Badger offensive lineman

In order to trim their training camp roster to 85, the Green Bay Packers have waived former Wisconsin Badger offensive lineman Jon Dietzen.

The team had added the Wisconsin product as an undrafted free agent after the 2021 NFL Draft.

Dietzen’s path to the NFL will now have to continue somewhere other than Green Bay, that is unless the Packers sign him back to their practice squad when the season kicks off.

Offensive lineman Cole Van Lanen is now the only former Badger playing up north in Green Bay.

WATCH: Former Wisconsin S Eric Burrell’s strip sack in his first preseason game

Watch Former Wisconsin safety Eric Burrell’s huge hit in his debut for the New Orleans Saints:

Several former Wisconsin Badgers put on NFL uniforms for the first time in the last few days including Raiders running back Garrett Groshek, Packers offensive linemen Jon Dietzen and Cole Van Lanen and New Orleans Saints safety Eric Burrell.

In his first preseason action against the Baltimore Ravens, former Wisconsin S Eric Burrell made a huge hit on the line of scrimmage to strip-sack Ravens quarterback Tyler Huntley. In addition to the huge hit, the former Badger had six solo tackles in his Saints’ debut.

Burrell was signed as an undrafted free agent in May and will likely have a difficult journey to make the New Orleans roster. However, if he can continue to make huge plays like this, the rookie safety will be on an NFL roster come September.

WATCH: Former Wisconsin OL Cole Van Lanen and Jon Dietzen work at Packers training camp

For fans of football in the state of Wisconsin, there isn’t a better story than Wisconsin Badger offensive linemen traveling north and playing for the Green Bay Packers.

There was almost the story of defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard doing the same, though he obviously chose to stay and continue coaching at his alma mater.

But after April’s NFL draft, former Badgers Cole Van Lanen (drafted) and Jon Dietzen (UDFA) got the opportunity to begin their NFL careers up north in Green Bay.

Both figure to serve as depth roles on the Packer offensive line, that is if they both make the roster.

But with the team still in training camp and beginning preseason games, we’re seeing reps of Van Lanen and Dietzen in green and gold.

WATCH: Former Badgers Cole Van Lanen and Jon Dietzen practice in Green Bay

Two former Badgers are in action for the Green Bay Packers

The Wisconsin football program is right up there in the conversation of which school is “O-line U.”

For Wisconsin and fans of the Packers, that title may prove to be a major bonus as Green Bay added both Cole Van Lanen and Jon Dietzen during the NFL offseason.

Van Lanen figures to be a lock to make the roster, as he was a fifth-round pick and projects to be a better pro than Dietzen.

But both former Badgers are part of the 90-man roster at Packer training camp.

No. 78 Van Lanen and No. 61 Dietzen are seen above working with Green Bay offensive line coach Adam Stenavich during the team’s training camp practice earlier today.

The return of rookie minicamp is a welcome sight after last year’s cancellation. Practice videos are back and I never thought that would feel so great to say.

Here is a first look at Isaiahh Loudermilk, Rachad Wildgoose, Cole Van Lanen and Jon Dietzen with their new NFL teams.

Nine former Wisconsin Badgers will work out at the program’s Pro Day this week

The Wisconsin Badgers are holding their annual Pro Day on Wednesday, the event giving players a chance to work out in front of NFL scouts before April’s draft.

This year the Pro Day holds more significance than usual because there isn’t a traditional NFL Combine. The two players that were invited—LT Cole Van Lanen and CB Rachad Wildgoose—will instead attend the virtual combine and do their workouts on Wednesday.

This year is also different in that every participating senior had the opportunity to stay at school and play in 2021. While many factors weighed into each player’s decision, this won’t be the normal scene of graduated Badgers testing the NFL waters because their college careers came to an end.

Here are the nine former Badgers who will work out at the program’s Pro Day this week:

Report: OL Jon Dietzen is preparing for a shot at the NFL

Wisconsin Badger offensive lineman Jon Dietzen is preparing for a shot at the NFL, that after missing the 2019 season with injury and return

It was a windy road for offensive lineman Jon Dietzen to get to where he is today, entering the program in 2015, starting for the Badgers from 2016-2018, stepping away from the sport in 2019 and finally returning and playing this season.

After taking that time off in 2019 due to injury, his return and play on the field were both impressive to watch and inspirational for those playing around him.

I think it’s safe to say he embodies what it means to be a Wisconsin Badger offensive lineman.

Well Badger fans, you might not be done watching him quite yet as a WBay.com piece highlighted Dietzen and noted that he is preparing for a shot at the NFL.

His career in a Wisconsin uniform will be remembered for his part in some impressive offensive line units, his perseverance to get back on the field and what he meant to the locker room as a leader of the team.

We now wait a few months to see whether he gets a shot at playing at the next level.

Early Thursday afternoon, Wisconsin starting right guard Jon Dietzen was nominated for the Orange Bowl-FWAA Courage Award, which goes to athletes that display courage on or off the field for reasons like ‘overcoming an injury or physical handicap, preventing a disaster or living through hardship.’

Dietzen’s nomination comes after he was forced to leave the team for the 2019 season because of nagging injuries throughout the course of his Wisconsin career. After overcoming these injuries in his season away from the team, Dietzen returned to the team for this season and is back in the starting line up for the Badgers. He could follow former Wisconsin safety D’Cota Dixon, that won the award in 2017, as the only Badgers to win the prestigious award.

Jon Dietzen’s story is so inspiring because of his difficult journey back onto the field for Wisconsin, and the courage he needed to show to overcome the obstacles of his injuries.
