Packers release TE Johnny Lumpkin from practice squad

Could the Packers return rookie TE Messiah Swinson on the practice squad?

The Green Bay Packers released tight end Johnny Lumpkin from the practice squad on Tuesday, potentially opening the door for the return of a player signed off the team’s practice squad earlier this season.

Lumpkin, a 264-pound blocking tight end, was signed to the practice squad on Sept. 10.

A week before signing Lumpkin, the Packers lost rookie tight end Messiah Swinson, who was signed off the practice squad and onto the 53-man roster of the Carolina Panthers. On Tuesday, the Panthers waived Swinson, who wasn’t active in any of the team’s first three games of the 2024 season.

Releasing Lumpkin could be the move that allows for Swinson to return on the practice squad this week.

The Packers signed Swinson as an undrafted free agent out of Arizona State and made him part of the team’s initial practice squad, suggesting they liked his potential as an inline blocker.

The Packers didn’t announce any other roster moves on Tuesday. The team will practice Wednesday before releasing the first injury report of Week 4.

4 players worked out for the Broncos on Tuesday, 1 signed

The Broncos worked out four players on Tuesday and signed tight end Johnny Lumpkin to the practice squad.

The Denver Broncos brought in four players for workouts on Tuesday, according to the NFL’s transaction wire.

The Broncos worked out two running backs — Jason Huntley and Aaron Shampklin — and two tight ends — Thomas Greaney and Johnny Lumpkin — at their Centura Health Training Center.

Huntley (5-9, 195 pounds) entered the league as a fifth-round pick out of New Mexico State with the Detroit Lions in 2020. After being cut by the Lions, Huntley played for the Philadelphia Eagles from 2020-2021, appearing in six games. He later spent time with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Indianapolis Colts from 2022-2023.

Shampklin (5-11, 195 pounds) spent time with the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted free agent out of Harvard in 2022. He went on to spend time with the Indianapolis Colts and the USFL’s Houston Gamblers before a stint with the Los Angeles Chargers.

Greaney (6-5, 255 pounds) signed with the Cleveland Browns as an undrafted free agent in May. He played college football for the Albany Great Danes, an FCS program in New York.

Lumpkin (6-6, 268 pounds) signed with the New England Patriots as a college free agent out of Louisiana this spring. He later spent time with the Colts. At the time of publication, only Lumpkin has signed (to the practice squad).

The three other players are likely candidates for reserve/future contracts with the Broncos following the concussion of the 2023 season.

Colts make practice squad moves

The Colts made some practice squad moves Tuesday.

The Indianapolis Colts signed three players to the practice squad and released three players from the practice squad, the team announced Tuesday.

Incoming to the practice squad are three players the Colts worked out Monday following their Week 1 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Here’s a look at the moves the Colts made to the practice squad Tuesday:

Signed

  • C Jack Anderson
  • RB Tyler Goodson
  • TE Jordan Murray

Released

  • RB Jason Huntley
  • WR Mike Strachan
  • TE Johnny Lumpkin

The Colts still likely need to find some depth at wide receiver and running back, especially with the latter position since Evan Hull is expected to miss time due to a knee injury.

Colts make several moves to roster, practice squad

The Colts made several more moves Thursday, including the addition of DE Jacob Martin to the active roster.

The Indianapolis Colts continued to tweak the active roster and practice squad Thursday ahead of the Week 1 opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

After making additional moves following roster cuts Wednesday, the Colts were back at it Thursday. They added another edge rusher to the mix while parting ways with a depth offensive lineman.

They also added a cornerback and tight end to the practice squad while releasing a linebacker and cornerback to make room.

Here are the moves the Colts made Thursday:

Did multiple practice absences reveal Patriots’ next round of cuts?

Patriots might have indirectly revealed recent round of roster cuts.

The New England Patriots returned to the practice field on Sunday with several notable absences.

With the 53-man deadline slated for Tuesday, the team has been hard at work whittling down their roster. Cornerback Quandre Mosely, defensive lineman Carl Davis and linebacker Carson Wells have all reportedly been cut by the team.

Here’s the full list of players that were missing at practice, per NESN’s Zack Cox:

TE Johnny Lumpkin

S Brad Hawkins

TE Scotty Washington

OL Micah Vanterpool

CB Rodney Randle

DL Justus Tavai

RB C.J. Marable

LB Diego Fagot

All of the above players were considered potential roster cuts in training camp. So none of the names on this list would come as any surprise if they don’t make the team.

The Patriots have until 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday to get their roster down to 53 players. That means coach Bill Belichick still has more work to do before turning the page to the regular season.

Patriots announce 2023 rookie jersey numbers ahead of preseason opener

The jersey numbers for the Patriots’ 2023 rookies have been revealed.

The New England Patriots’ 2023 NFL draft class and undrafted free agents are ditching their temporarily assigned numbers for their actual game numbers.

On Thursday, the Patriots announced all of the new numbers ahead of their preseason opener against the Houston Texans.

With rosters being at 90 players at this stage, a lot of these numbers could change as rosters are finalized and numbers shift. It is also important to note that there are some players currently wearing the same number as another player on the roster. That is permitted in training camp, as long as the players aren’t not on the same side of the ball.

Let’s take a look at what numbers the rookies have decided to go with for the next few weeks of training camp.

Reading the room: Evaluating tight ends on Patriots’ roster

It’ll be the Hunter Henry and Mike Gesicki Show at tight end, but others could contribute at the position for the Patriots.

The New England Patriots have always loved their tight ends, and they doubled down at the position in 2021 by signing Hunter Henry and Jonnu Smith at the same time.

Fast forward to 2023, and Smith is in Atlanta, while the Patriots brought in Mike Gesicki as a replacement.

Offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien pioneered 12 personnel for the Patriots in his first stint with the team. He brought in Will Lawing, who has followed him in his previous stints, to coach the tight end position. There’s hope the two can work together to create a new gold standard at the position.

For now, here’s what things look like for the Patriots’ 2023 tight end group:

Patriots sign massive, under-the-radar UDFA tight end

The Patriots are making this Darnell Washington-sized tight end part of their UDFA signings.

For those that wanted the New England Patriots to draft Georgia tight end Darnell Washington, they could find some level of intrigue with the team signing Louisiana tight end Johnny Lumpkin as an undrafted free agent, per The Score’s Jordan Schultz.

Lumpkin is a massive athlete with a similar build to that of Washington. He stands at 6-foot-6 and 260 pounds with the ability to serve predominantly as a blocking tight end right of the gates.

The Patriots already have two receiving tight ends with Hunter Henry and Mike Gesicki. So Lumpkin definitely fits the mold of the kind of player that could stick if he proves himself on the practice field.

Granted, he hasn’t shown Washington’s potential as a receiver, but there is still plenty of room to grow for the rookie tight end that hauled in 16 receptions for 143 yards and four touchdowns last season with the Ragin’ Cajuns.

At the very least, he can help fortify the offensive front that the Patriots appeared hell-bent on rebuilding through the draft.

Bengals to host TE Johnny Lumpkin for pre-draft visit

More TE work for the Bengals before the draft.

The Cincinnati Bengals will host Louisiana tight end Johnny Lumpkin on a visit before the 2023 NFL draft.

Cincinnati lost three tight ends to free agency and only signed Irv Smith Jr. as a potential starter for next season, so lots of interest in the position makes sense at this stage of the process.

According to Aaron Wilson of Click2Houston, Lumpkin has visits with two other teams lined up, too.

Lumpkin, formerly of Hutchinson Community College before transferring in 2018, is 6’5″ and 264 pounds and scored six touchdowns since joining Louisiana, four of those coming last year.

This would likely be a late-round or undrafted idea for a Bengals team looking to restore depth to the tight end position depending on what happens in the early rounds — making Lumpkin a name to remember.

Report: Colts to host TE Johnny Lumpkin for pre-draft visit

The Colts reportedly have a top-30 visit scheduled with TE Johnny Lumpkin.

The Indianapolis Colts reportedly will host Louisiana tight end Johnny Lumpkin for a top-30 visit ahead of the 2023 NFL draft.

Though the tight end room is pretty crowded entering the draft, the Colts will continue to look for talent even in the form of undrafted rookies following the draft.

According to Aaron Wilson of Click2Houston, Lumpkin also has visits with the Atlanta Falcons and Cincinnati Bengals.

It’s unlikely Lumpkin will get selected in the NFL draft. He’s going to be 26 years old before the regular season starts as he began his collegiate career in 2016. He spent two seasons at Hutchinson Community College before transferring to Louisiana in 2018.

At 6-foot-5 and 264 pounds, Lumpkin is relatively athletic. He posted a 10-foot broad jump and has 35-inch arms. A 4.53 in the short shuttle isn’t an elite time, but it’s solid enough for a player at his weight.

Lumpkin spent five seasons at Louisiana but missed the entire 2019 campaign due to a separated shoulder. In his four seasons played, Lumpkin recorded 36 receptions for 408 yards and six touchdowns. He caught four of those touchdowns during the 2022 season.

It’s difficult to see too many changes coming at the tight end position for the Colts considering how crowded it is, but it wouldn’t be a surprise if the team had an idea to mold Lumpkin into a blocking tight end considering his arm length.

We’ll be tracking the Colts’ reported interest in the 2023 draft class so be sure to keep up with latest updates via our tracker.
