Every Penn State player on an NFL opening day roster in 2022

Here is every former Penn State plater on an NFL roster to start the new NFL season in 2022.

The start of a new season in the National Football League is here and there will be a good amount of Penn State flavor throughout the league this season. Penn State will have the eighth most players on an NFL opening day roster this season with 34 players appearing on an NFL team’s 53-man roster to start the season (plus two additional players on injured reserve and another on the physically unable to perform list). In all, Penn State claims 44 players are on NFL rosters to start the year with the inclusion of practice squad players.

That includes nine players who were on the Penn State roster in 2021, including wide receiver [autotag]Jahan Dotson[/autotag], defensive end [autotag]Arnold Ebiketie[/autotag], and safety [autotag]Jaquan Brisker[/autotag]. Dotson is one of four Penn State players on the Washington Commanders, the most of any NFL franchise to start the season.

Former kicker [autotag]Robbie Gould[/autotag] continues to be the elder statesman of the Nittany Lions football family in the NFL. Gould, of the San Francisco 49ers, is entering his 19th season in the NFL.

Here is a look at every Penn State player on either an NFL team’s 53-man roster or practice squad at the start of the 2022 season.

Seahawks battling numerous injuries at cornerback spot

The Seattle Seahawks are battling numerous injuries at the cornerback spot ahead of their preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Seattle Seahawks are set to square off against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Saturday for their first preseason game of the summer. The squad is battling a number of injuries, however, especially on the defensive side of the ball at the cornerback position.

Coach Pete Carroll provided some important injury updates following Tuesday’s practice, explaining: “We are a little bit low on the corner spot you know with Johnny Reid (groin) out too right now.”

Here’s a look at who else is banged up ahead of the Steelers matchup.

Cornerback Artie Burns (groin): “He tweaked his groin today unfortunately in the one-on-ones,” Carroll said. “I don’t know what that means at this point, but he felt it, so we had to get him out of there.”

Cornerback Sidney Jones IV (concussion): “I need to hear more for the next two days to see what’s going on,” Carroll told reporters. “He’s feeling really good. I talked to him this morning but I have to get the rebound of that from the doctor. I haven’t heard that today.”

Cornerback Tre Brown (PUP list, knee): “He’s making progress,” Carroll confirmed. “He’s running and working out but it’s not like in the next day or two. It’s going to be some time still. He hasn’t been able to run full speed yet on the field. Until he can do that, we won’t know anything.”

Seahawks have 3 of NFL’s best DBs in coverage rate over expectation

Three Seahawks are on the list, including cornerback John Reid at the top.

Pro Football Focus has published an interesting analysis regarding defensive backs who cover at a rate higher than expected given their NFL Scouting Combine athletic scoring.

Here’s how PFF’s Haley English describes the model.

“I built a linear regression model that takes into account the top two principal components, as well as the defender’s position, to predict a player’s NFL coverage rate. Some players greatly exceeded their NFL combine athleticism, where their actual coverage rate was much higher than their predicted coverage rate from their combine results.”

And here’s the chart, which shows the league’s top 15 defensive backs in coverage rate over expectation. Three Seahawks are on the list, including cornerback John Reid at the top.

This speaks to Seattle’s ability to recognize underrated talents on the back end of a defense. Coach Pete Carroll certainly has his faults as an evaluator, but nobody knows DB play better.

2022 NFL draft: Penn State cornerback Tariq Castro-Fields selected by 49ers

Penn State cornerback Tariq Castro-Fields is officially off the board at the 2022 NFL draft

One of the key defensive players for the Penn State defense in 2021 is now officially heading to the NFL. Cornerback [autotag]Tariq Castro-Fields[/autotag] saw his dream become a reality when the San Francisco drafted him in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL draft on Saturday.

Casto-Fields made the decision to return for his extra year of eligibility in 2021 after seeing his 2020 season cut short due to injury. That allowed Castro-fields to have a steady season on the playing field that ultimately helped lead to receiving an invite to the Senior Bowl.

Castro-Fields is the latest cornerback from Penn State to be drafted by an NFL franchise, joining recent draft picks such as [autotag]John Reid[/autotag] (2020), [autotag]Amani Oruwariye[/autotag] (2019), [autotag]Nick Scott[/autotag] (2019), [autotag]Troy Apke[/autotag] (2018), [autotag]Chris Campbell[/autotag] (2018) and [autotag]Marcus Allen[/autotag] (2018), [autotag]Jordan Lucas[/autotag] (2016), and [autotag]Adrian Amos[/autotag] (2015).

Castro-Fields is the fourth Nittany Lion to be selected in the 2022 NFL draft. Wide receiver [autotag]Jahan Dotson[/autotag] was a first-round pick of the Washington Commanders, [autotag]Arnold Ebiketie[/autotag] went early in the second round to the Atlanta Falcons and [autotag]Jaquan Brisker[/autotag] was selected by the Chicago Bears later in the second round. Linebacker [autotag]Brandon Smith[/autotag] went to the Carolina Panthers in the fourth round, and punter [autotag]Jordan Stout[/autotag] ended up with the Baltimore Ravens later in the fourth round.

Seattle Seahawks: Breaking down each member of the new-look cornerback group

Let’s take a moment to reset and examine each member of the remodeled cornerback room.

The Seattle Seahawks have made a flurry of changes to the cornerback position over the last couple weeks. A few familiar faces remain, but the team has almost totally upended their depth chart at a critical defensive spot with days to go before the 2021 season begins. Unless you have been obsessively following every move the franchise makes, it’s easy to have missed something in all the excitement.

Let’s take a moment to reset and examine each member of the remodeled cornerback room. Here is a look at the history, measurables and most essential numbers to know for each of them.

The Ravens have waived former Penn State QB Trace McSorley

Former Penn State QB Trace McSorley failed to make the final cut with the Baltimore Ravens

One of the top quarterbacks in Penn State history is now on the free-agent market in the NFL. Trace McSorley was among the many players around the National Football League to learn they will not be included on their team’s 53-man active roster at the start of the 2021 NFL season. The Baltimore Ravens officially waived McSorley on Tuesday as the deadline for final roster cuts approached.

It should not take long for McSorley to be on an NFL payroll somewhere though, and there is still a chance the Ravens will manage to keep the former Nittany Lion in the mix.

McSorley did battle some back injury concerns during Ravens preseason, but he had seemed like a solid backup option to Lamar Jackson. But the Ravens obviously feel comfortable with using Tyler Huntley as a primary backup to their MVP-caliber franchise quarterback.

McSorley was one of a handful of Nittany Lions officially being cut as teams trimmed down to 53 players on Tuesday. Grant Haley was waived by the New Orleans Saints. Cornerback John Reid, a week after being obtained in a trade from the Houston Texans, was also waived by the Seattle Seahawks.

We will wait to see where these players and others end up as the season approaches.

Seahawks acquiring Jaguars CB Sidney Jones in a trade

According to a report by Adam Schefter at ESPN, the Jaguars are sending cornerback Sidney Jones to Seattle in a trade.

For the second time in a week, the Seattle Seahawks have added another cornerback in a trade. First, they sent a conditional seventh-round draft pick to the Houston Texans in exchange for John Reid. Now, they’re hitting up another AFC South team for corner talent.

According to a report by Adam Schefter at ESPN, the Jacksonville Jaguars are sending cornerback Sidney Jones to Seattle in a trade.

Terms of the deal have not been reported as of yet.

Jones (Six-foot, 181 pounds) played his college ball at Washington, where he was a star. The Philadelphia Eagles selected him in the seond round of the 2017 NFL draft. He spent three seasons in Philadelphia but only started eight games before he was cut last September. Jacksonville signed him a week later and he wound up playing nine games for the Jaguars.

In 31 games, Jones has totaled four interceptions, 19 pass breakups and 76 combined tackles.

Texans make 4 transactions official

The Houston Texans announced the completion of four roster transactions on Wednesday.

The Houston Texans announced four transactions that have been in the works for the past two days.

The first was the trade for Green Bay Packers cornerback Ka’dar Hollman.

The second was the trading of former 2020 fourth-round cornerback John Reid to the Seattle Seahawks.

The third was the placement of receiver Taywan Taylor on injured reserve.

The fourth was the signing of cornerback Rasul Douglas.

Douglas, a former Philadelphia Eagles 2017 third-round pick, has played in 60 games over his career, starting in 29 of them. The 6-2, 209-pound cornerback has collected 180 combined tackles, 10 tackles for loss, a quarterback hit, five interceptions, and 34 pass breakups in his three seasons with the Eagles and lone season with the Carolina Panthers (2020).

Seahawks trading conditional seventh-round pick to Texans for CB John Reid

According to a report by Tom Pelissero at NFL Network, Seattle is trading a conditional seventh-round pick to the Houston Texans in exchange for cornerback John Reid.

The Seattle Seahawks clearly needed more help at the cornerback position before the start of the 2021 NFL season. Today, they’re getting some courtesy of a trade by general manager John Schneider.

According to a report by Tom Pelissero at NFL Network, Seattle is trading a conditional seventh-round pick to the Houston Texans in exchange for cornerback John Reid.

Reid was a fourth-round pick by Houston in the 2020 NFL draft. He played 13 games as a rookie, putting in 145 snaps on defense (13%) and 96 on special teams (22%). Reid posted 13 combined tackles and one pass defensed during his time on the field.

He joins a cornerback rotation that’s extremely unsettled for this late in the calendar year. Ahkello Witherspoon, Damarious Randall, Tre Brown, Tre Flowers and D.J. Reed could all get significant playing time during this coming season. Reid won’t solve all their DB problems, but at least he’ll bring a little more depth.

Texans deal CB John Reid to the Seahawks for conditional 2023 seventh-round pick

The Houston Texans have flipped cornerback John Reid to the Seattle Seahawks for a conditional seventh-round pick in 2023.

Roster evaluation is a 365-day-a-year job, and so is building capital for the draft.

According to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, the Houston Texans are trading former 2020 fourth-round cornerback John Reid to the Seattle Seahawks for a conditional 2023 seventh-round pick.

The move helps the Texans get underneath the 80-man roster deadline by 3:00 p.m. Tuesday.

The move also helps general manager Nick Caserio assemble more draft picks that the team can use to move up within the draft to take certain targets, not just use all of them on one veteran on a team undergoing a rebuild.

Reid played in 13 games for Houston last season, starting in one game, and collected 13 combined tackles and a pass breakup.
