Ravens divisional round preview: 10 things to know about the Houston Texans

We’re looking at ten things to know about the Houston Texans ahead of their AFC Divisional Round matchup against the Baltimore Ravens

The Texans advanced to the Divisional round of the NFL playoffs for the fifth time in franchise history with a 45-14 win over the Browns in Super Wild Card Weekend.

The playoff success earned Houston a rematch against the Baltimore Ravens, and they’ll return to M&T Bank Stadium hoping to avenge a 25-9 loss in Week 1.

The Texans are a different team since that humble welcome to the NFL moment for C.J. Stroud, and all the former Ohio State star has done is shatter records and lead his team to the postseason as a rookie.

With final preparations for Saturday’s kickoff underway, we’re looking at ten things about the Houston Texans.

John Metchie III named Houston Texans Ed Block Courage Award winner

Houston Texans award John Metchie for his commitment to sportsmanship and courage

When it comes to overcoming it adversity, nobody understands it better than former Alabama wide receiver [autotag]John Metchie III[/autotag]. In the 2021 SEC Championship Game against the Georgia Bulldogs, Metchie tore his ACL which abruptly ended his collegiate career. Metchie then declared for the NFL after his junior year after racking up career totals of 155 catches for 2,081 yards and 14 touchdowns.

Just months after being selected in the second round of the 2022 NFL draft (pick No. 44 overall), Metchie was diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia and was sidelined for the entirety of his rookie season. It was a major blow for a guy already attempting to rehab from an unfortunate knee injury.

Today, Metchie was voted as the Houston Texans winner of the Ed Block Courage Award. The award is handed out to one player on every team in the NFL which recognizes an individual for his commitment to the principles of sportsmanship and courage. The award is voted on by peers in the league, so it is quite the honor to win and speaks further volumes of Metchie’s character.

Texans receiver John Metchie III expected to make NFL debut Sunday after battling leukemia

John Metchie III has been removed from the injured list, seemingly opening the door for his first game action in nearly two years.

When the Houston Texans host the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, it will likely be the first time receiver John Metchie III has suited up for a football game in nearly two calendar years.

The former Alabama star is expected to play against the Colts after he was removed from the injury report on Friday, seemingly clearing the way for the former second-round pick to make his NFL debut.

Widely seen as a possible first-round pick in 2022, Metchie’s stock dropped after an ACL tear in the SEC Championship threatened to cost him time during his rookie campaign.

However, he would soon face much more serious concerns. Last July, Metchie announced that he would sit out his entire rookie season after he was diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia.

He has now been officially cleared to return to the field, and while a hamstring strain sidelined him in the Week 1 loss to Baltimore, all signs seem to be pointing toward Metchie finally taking the field on Sunday in a Houston uniform for the first time.

Houston Texans DB talks: John Metchie III’s return is an inspiration

After missing all of the 2022 season battling Leukemia, Texans WR John Metchie III is back on the field at full strength

After being selected in the second round of the 2022 NFL draft by the Houston Texans, wide receiver John Metchie received a diagnosis of acute promyelocytic leukemia. While receiving treatment, Metchie had to watch his rookie season fly by. Now, he has been cleared to return and is preparing to take on the NFL.

Metchie was a stellar receiver for the Crimson Tide and is now expected to serve a large role on a very young, talented offense that appears poised to compete with the Jacksonville Jaguars for the AFC South.

While at training camp, Metchie has been working on getting ready for the upcoming regular season. One of his teammates recently said this of Metchie

“It’s really inspiring seeing him fight back and do everything that he’s been doing,” said second-year defensive back Jalen Pitre. “He’s a guy that I want on my team because I know there’s no quit in a guy like that. He’s continuing to show up and continuing to fight. That’s big for me, and it’s very inspiring.”

His story is an inspiration to all, but it must hit his teammates hard. Seeing him persevere and find his way back onto the field shows his strength, mentally and physically.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Metchie and other former Alabama football players now in the NFL.

Houston Texans WR John Metchie III cleared for training camp

John Metchie III returns to the field after missing his rookie season battling Leukemia!

Former Alabama wide receiver John Metchie III was selected by the Houston Texans in the second round of the 2022 NFL draft. His rookie season, however, will take place in 2023 after missing the entire 2022 season.

Shortly after being drafted, Metchie was diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia. He stayed off the football field for over a year to receive treatment.

Now, as training camps around the league get underway, we learn that Metchie has been fully cleared to return.

In his last season at Alabama, Metchie had 96 receptions for 1,142 yards and 14 touchdowns.

He joins a Texans team that is young, but extremely talented. The AFC South appears to be led by the Jacksonville Jaguars, but Houston could be closer than many think, especially with Metchie joining the squad.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Metchie and other former Alabama players in the NFL as the 2023 season approaches.

Ranking the WRs in the AFC South entering 2023

From Calvin Ridley to Kyle Philips, here’s a ranking of the WRs in the AFC South entering 2023.

The AFC South isn’t the first division to come to mind when you think of the elite receivers in the NFL.

As far as what it does offer at the position is the return of a player that was on the trajectory to be one of the best in the league, a group that has the potential to be good-to-great receivers that are in the developmental stages of their career, and players that are looking to prove that they are more than being role players that contribute on special teams.

For the purpose of this list, I took the top three receivers from all four team’s depth charts according to Ourlads so you won’t find rookies like Josh Downs and Tank Dell who will likely end up being contributors for their offenses as rookies.

Be sure to check out our other AFC South rankings entering the new season:

Let’s take a look at how the receivers rank across the AFC South:

5 reasons why the Houston Texans is the best fit for Bryce Young

The Houston Texans would be the best fit for Bryce Young. Here are five reasons why.

Former Alabama quarterback Bryce Young is expected to be a Day 1 starter in the league, but for which team? The 2023 NFL draft will give us all an answer rather quickly.

Currently, the Carolina Panthers have the No. 1 overall pick after trading with the Chicago Bears, but the Houston Texans loom at No. 2 overall Both the Panthers and the Texans are in need of finding a franchise quarterback.

Young is considered by many to be worthy of the first overall pick, but others argue that Ohio State’s C.J. Stroud will be the first player off the board.

Here are five reasons why being selected second overall to Houston would be the best thing to happen to Bryce Young.

NFL analysts discuss options for Houston Texans with No. 2 pick

Former No. 2 overall draft pick, Ryan Leaf, shares what he thinks the Texans’ draft strategy should be

The Chicago Bears traded the first overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft to the Carolina Panthers this past weekend and all of the madness is ensuing. The Panthers have publicly said they are open to trading back, but nobody knows what is really going to happen. A lot of executives in the NFL believe that CJ Stroud will be the Panthers guy at No. 1, so what do the Houston Texans do at No. 2?

Former No. 2 overall draft pick and NFL analyst for Good Morning Football, Ryan Leaf, shares his draft strategy for the Texans. The Texans have reportedly been all in on Alabama Crimson Tide QB [autotag]Bryce Young[/autotag] since day one so the Panthers trading up for Stroud would be perfect for them.

The Texans previously had to worry about their division-rival Indianapolis Colts trading up to No. 1 for Bryce who they seemed to really like. Leaf thinks that the Texans are in the spot they wanted to be in all along.

The Texans would be a great fit for Young as they have an outstanding offensive tackle in Laremy Tunsil and will have the opportunity to build around him. He would also be teaming up with former Alabama wide receiver John Metchie III.

Houston Texans GM shares amazing update on WR John Metchie’s recovery

Former Alabama WR John Metchie supposed to return to Texans full-time in April

The year of 2022 was filled with trials and turbulences for former Alabama Crimson Tide wide receiver John Metchie III. But, in 2023 things seem to be looking up.

In April, Metchie was selected in the second round of the 2022 NFL draft with the No. 44 overall pick to the Houston Texans. Metchie was going to be an immediate starter for Houston and have a chance to make an instant impact on the offense.

However, in July, tragedy struck as Metchie was diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia. As a result, Metchie missed the entire season to focus on his health and recovery.

This week, Texans general manager, Nick Caserio, gave an amazing update on Metchie and spoke on his recovery, and gave updates on his timeline. The Texans predict he will be back with the team full-time in April, but Caserio gave a more in-depth answer:

“I’d say there’s a chance that he’ll be ready for the start of the offseason program. I think there are still some things that he has to complete or go through. Quite frankly, it’s amazing what he’s done to this point. He actually looks better now than he did when we drafted him in the spring. He’s improved his strength, he’s improved his lower body strength. His attitude has been great, even though he’s been dealing with a lot of things medically.”

Metchie is getting very close to being back on the field!
