When it comes to overcoming it adversity, nobody understands it better than former Alabama wide receiver [autotag]John Metchie III[/autotag]. In the 2021 SEC Championship Game against the Georgia Bulldogs, Metchie tore his ACL which abruptly ended his collegiate career. Metchie then declared for the NFL after his junior year after racking up career totals of 155 catches for 2,081 yards and 14 touchdowns.
Just months after being selected in the second round of the 2022 NFL draft (pick No. 44 overall), Metchie was diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia and was sidelined for the entirety of his rookie season. It was a major blow for a guy already attempting to rehab from an unfortunate knee injury.
Today, Metchie was voted as the Houston Texans winner of the Ed Block Courage Award. The award is handed out to one player on every team in the NFL which recognizes an individual for his commitment to the principles of sportsmanship and courage. The award is voted on by peers in the league, so it is quite the honor to win and speaks further volumes of Metchie’s character.
