Jags moving on from OC John DeFilippo

The Jacksonville Jaguars now have another vacancy to fill as offensive coordinator John DeFilippo was let go Monday morning.

With the Jacksonville Jaguars coaching staff returning for evaluations today, most expected defensive coordinator Todd Wash to be parting ways with the staff in some manner, but instead it appears offensive coordinator John DeFilippo will be the first member to leave.

Per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero the Jags decided to move on from DeFilippo Monday morning, leaving another vacancy on the Jags’ coaching staff.

DeFilippo, 41, joined the Jags almost exactly a year ago (Jan. 16, 2019) after being fired by the Minnesota Vikings before the 2018 season could end. He took over a job previously held by Nate Hackett, who the Jags fired in late November of 2018.

The firing of DeFilippo comes as a surprise because of how short-lived his tenure was. Additionally, DeFilippo was able to aid rookie quarterback Gardner Minshew II through a 6-6 record as a starter after Nick Foles was sidelined for a collarbone injury Week 1 and his struggles Week 14. Shockingly, Marrone seemingly didn’t think that was enough to work out whatever differences they had during evaluations and now there will be a search for the Jags’ second offensive coordinator in two years.

The Jags’ offense finished the season ranked 26th in points, 20th in yards, 16th in passing, and 17th in rushing. When looking at those figures, it would seem Marrone definitely will look for a coordinator who specializes in the run game as tailback Leonard Fournette and company struggled down the stretch.

Giants head coaching search: 15 potential candidates

The New York Giants have fired head coach Pat Shurmur, so here’s a look at 15 candidates who could replace him.

As many things change, so many stay the same — especially in East Rutherford, where the New York Giants have fired head coach Pat Shurmur and are once again on the prowl for a replacement.

The Giants now need to hire their fifth head coach since 2015 and since they got a late start, there’s a lot of ground to make up.

Here’s a look at 15 potential head coaching candidates.

Editor’s note: Having gone over several of these names previously, there’s no real reason to completely rehash everything just for the sake of doing it, so we’re going to blockquote out previous analysis and commentary, and add to it if needed.

Matt Rhule

Rhule is drawing interest from the Carolina Panthers and others, but rumors suggest he’s looking for a place where he can control personnel or he’s not leaving college. Are the Giants that team? Ehh…

Rhule has had success just about everywhere he has gone, and his time at Baylor has been no exception. With the school dealing with some very serious issues, he’s brought it back from the ashes. Not only that, Rhule has a familiarity with the Giants and team ownership, having served as their assistant offensive line coach in 2012. He’s generated head coaching interest in recent years and very nearly landed the Jets job prior to the hiring of Adam Gase.

Forgetting about his desire to control personnel, Rhule has no NFL head coaching experience to speak of, which is something the Giants may look to avoid this time around.

Abry Jones says fans who believe Jags have quit shouldn’t attend until 2020

At just a little under 24 hours past Sunday’s beatdown to the Los Angeles Chargers, fans of the Jacksonville Jaguars are still steaming about the team’s performance — and rightfully so. The embarrassing 45-10 loss was the Jags’ fourth of 20 points or more within the last five weeks, which has led some fans to question the team’s effort.

After the game, one of the Jags’ top locker room leaders in defensive tackle Abry Jones had a message for those fans. He insisted that the team hadn’t quit and suggested that the fans who thought otherwise simply not show up until 2020.

I don’t know that it’s fair to say the players have quit, but one thing is clear: the Jags simply aren’t good and are extremely hard to watch at this point. That applies to the jobs that both the players and coaches are doing.

Atop the list of struggling coaches would definitely have to be defensive coordinator Todd Wash, who seems to be getting outmatched increasingly by the week. While he was without two starters in Myles Jack and Ronnie Harrison, the unit gave up a ridiculous total of 525 yards to Philip Rivers and company. A majority of those yards came from one person as Austin Ekler racked up 213 total yards on the day. It got to a point in the game where it looked like no player on the roster wanted to tackle him and he was pretty much the only weapon the Chargers needed.

On the offensive end, the Jags weren’t able to get much done either. Some of their struggles have been due to poor offensive line play. The unit has made it extremely difficult for Leonard Fournette to get going, which then causes John DeFilippo to struggle with play-calling. In Sunday’s game, the unit was only able to garner 10 points despite the change behind center, which is certainly something fans had a hard time sitting through just as they did while watching the defense get annihilated.

Luckily, the Jags only have one more home game for local fans to endure. They will be on the road the next two weeks, traveling to the Oakland Raiders and Atlanta Falcons. However, the season finale will take place at TIAA Bank Field against the Indianapolis Colts, but based off how the team has played as of late, it’s looking like there won’t be a strong crowd — and understandably so.

John DeFilippo talks about RT Jawaan Taylor’s rookie season so far

Jawaan Taylor has started in all of the Jags’ regular season games, but there is still plenty of room for growth before the season ends.

The Jacksonville Jaguars’ 2019 season hasn’t gone as planned, but one thing fans can’t complain about is the contributions the team’s rookie class has made. Of course, first-round pick Josh Allen is having a solid season and is in the conversation for Defensive Rookie of the Year, while Gardner Minshew II had an impressive run, too.

Another player from the class who has contributed extensively is rookie right tackle Jawaan Taylor, who has started in all of the Jags’ regular season game. And while he has had a problem with penalties, offensive coordinator John DeFilippo likes some of the things he’s seen in the rookie and believes strongly in his future.

“I’m proud of Jawaan [Taylor], I really am,” DeFillipo said this week. “He’s drawn some tough assignments this year now. We’ve played some darn good fronts, and obviously I’d love to see him – he needs to cut down on the penalties, and I think he would tell you that. I’ve heard Coach Marrone speak of that. There’s two things I’d like Jawaan to work on, it’s just his consistency. Where his hands are at times, his punch, where he strikes a defender at the point of attack. And then obviously finishing people, and I think when we do that it’ll naturally cut down on those penalties.”

Taylor currently leads the league in penalties with 13, but that’s not exactly surprising for a rookie who has faced the elite athletes he has like J.J. Watt, Cam Jordan and and Von Miller to name a few.

The Jags are likely heading towards an offseason full of staff changes, however, Taylor is young enough for the next regime (if there is one) to view as a part of the team’s young nucleus. Having a solid game against the Chargers would be a great place to start cleaning up his technique and having success being that Los Angeles has two of the league’s more respectable pass rushers in Joey Bosa and Melvin Ingram.

Former Jags WR Terrelle Pryor stabbed, charged with simple assault

A former Jacksonville Jaguar has found himself in some trouble with the law after being stabbed in Pittsburgh.

A report surfaced Saturday morning detailing a stabbing involving former Jacksonville Jaguars receiver Terrelle Pryor Sr. in Pittsburgh. Pryor was severely wounded in the incident and listed in critical condition, but was upgraded throughout the day and eventually arrested for simple assault according to the Pittsburgh Police Department.

Shalaya Briston, who CBS KDKA Pittsburgh labeled as Pryor’s girlfriend, also was arrested and charged with criminal attempt homicide and aggravated assault for her involvement in the incident.

The key details of the report are as follows:

Upon further investigation by detectives in the Violent Crimes Unit, it was learned the male’s injuries were incurred during an earlier dispute inside an apartment on the 200 block of Heinz Street on the city’s North Side. During that altercation, a female victim also received injuries.

After consultation with the Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office, police have arrested two people believed to be mutual combatants in this incident.

Pryor started his career with the Oakland Raiders (2011-13) and was selected in the third-round of the 2011 Supplemental Draft out of Ohio State. Afterward, he bounced around and spent time with the Seattle Seahawks (2014), Kansas City Chiefs (2015) and Cleveland Browns (2015-16) amongst notables. While in Cleveland he made the transition from quarterback to receiver and played under current Jags coordinator John DeFilippo. Three seasons later the two had a reunion in Jacksonville this offseason.

Pryor was one of Ohio State’s most polarizing quarterbacks during his time there, racking up a career total of 57 touchdowns. His best year in the league occurred while with the Browns, where he accumulated 77 receptions for 1,007 yards and four touchdowns.

7 candidates to replace Giants coach Pat Shurmur

The New York Giants are unlikely to fire head coach Pat Shurmur, but if they do, here are seven candidates to replace him.

The New York Giants have no plans to fire coach Pat Shurmur this year or at any point during the offseason, meaning that his job could be safe through 2020.

Of course, Giants ownership let similar information leak when it came to former coach Ben McAdoo, and we all know how that ended up playing out.

So while it’s unlikely the Giants move on from Shurmur over the next calendar year, there’s no denying he’s put himself firmly on the hot seat. Accordingly, we’re here to examine seven candidates who could eventually replace him.

Matt Bush-USA TODAY Sports

Tom Coughlin

Yep. We’re starting out in controversial fashion, but let’s not pretend that forcing Coughlin to step down wasn’t the first in a long string of poor decisions that led these Giants to where they are today. The real question would be whether or not Coughlin would want to come back to New York. Or, at this point, whether he even desires a return to the sideline at all.

Bottom line: The Giants need an old-school disciplinarian leading the way because the whole player-friendly thing is clearly not working.

Behind Enemy Lines: Week 11 Q&A with Colts Wire

Jags Wire went behind enemy lines to discuss this weeks opponents in the Colts with Colts Wire’s Arden Franklyn.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have found themselves on a quest to reach .500 again and keep their playoff hopes alive. They will be in pretty good shape as far as health goes heading into Week 11’s game against the Indianapolis Colts after coming off their bye week and only having one player on their final injury report.

However, with Sunday’s game being against their divisional rivals in the Indianapolis Colts, acquiring a victory won’t be easy by any means. To help us get a little insight on the Jags’ longtime rivals, I reached out to my good friend Arden Franklyn of Colts Wire. Below are four burning questions he was kind enough to answer on Indy, which is now just a game ahead of the Jags with a 5-4 record.

Jags Wire: How has life for the Colts been minus Andrew Luck? Obviously, he was the face of the franchise, but the Colts still have found themselves with a decent record.

Arden Franklyn: It’s definitely been different, to say the least. While a portion of this fan/media base hadn’t drastically changed their expectations for the Colts, there was still a drop in that area/confidence in the team. As for on the field, Luck’s absence is bigger because of what it does for the offense. Without No. 12, to carry the load and make those Superman-like plays, the Colts truly have to play like a team and depend on all 11 starters and role players to do their jobs.

How to watch, stream, listen to Jaguars vs. Colts

The Jags and Colts will be in a Week 11 battle in which both teams must win to keep their playoff hopes alive, here is how fans can tune in.

The wait is almost over for the Jacksonville Jaguars’ return to the field as they will be coming off a much-needed bye. However, they will need to be much more successful from this point on if they are to make the playoffs, starting with Week 11’s opponents: the Indianapolis Colts.
Both teams will have their starting quarterbacks returning to the field in Jacoby Brissett and Nick Foles. Brissett will be returning from a MCL sprain that caused him to miss some time against the Pittsburgh Steelers Week 9 and a full game against the Miami Dolphins Week 10. That also caused the Colts to go on a two-game skid in which they will be desperately looking to get out of.
Foles, on the other hand, missed even more time on the field as it’s been two months since he last played. The veteran broke his collarbone in the Jags’ season opener against the Kansas City Chiefs and now the team is 4-5 with a small chance to make the playoffs. However, that’s better than nothing, especially if the veteran can have the late season success he’s had in the past.

Will the Jags-Colts Week 11 game be on TV in your area?

The Jags and Colts game is a must-win for both teams, however, the coverage on the game won’t be huge around the nation.

It’s crunch time for the 4-5 Jacksonville Jaguars who are currently on the outside looking in on the AFC playoff race. This week, they will be taking on  their longtime rivals in the Indianapolis Colts (5-4), who are equally desperate due to being on a two-game skid which has decreased their playoff chances.

The No. 2 spot in the AFC South will also be on the line for the winner of Sunday’s game, though the wild-card spot is what both teams should be likely eying. In the process, both starting quarterbacks Nick Foles and Jacoby Brissett (likely) will be returning to the field, which has made the meeting between the two rivals a tough one to call.

All of that said, both Jags and Colts fans will be viewing this one as a must-win and the fans in the yellow region of the TV coverage map below will be able to tune in locally via CBS.

Announcing the game will be Andrew Catalon (play-by-play), James Lofton (color analyst) and Michael Grady (sideline).

Sunday’s game will mark the first meeting between the Jags and Colts of the year. The Colts lead the all-time series between the two rivals with a 23-13 record, however, the Jags won the last meeting by a score of 6-0.

The game will also have an interesting storyline behind it due to Foles and Jags offensive coordinator John DeFilippo playing in their first game against their former offensive coordinator in Colts head coach Frank Reich. As many can recall, the trio all were a part of the Philadelphia Eagles’ 2017 team that won Super Bowl LII with Foles leading the way as the game’s MVP.

Nick Foles on Colts HC Frank Reich: “He’s a guy that has impacted my life so much”

Nick Foles says he’s forever grateful for Colts HC Frank Reich, who changed his career in a big way while with the Eagles.

Not only will Sunday’s game mark the first for quarterback Nick Foles since his Week 1 collarbone injury but it will also mark the first time that he and offensive coordinator John DeFilippo will be up against one of their former bosses in Indianapolis Colts head coach Frank Reich. With the three winning a Super Bowl together in 2017 with the Philadelphia Eagles, there is a great deal of respect between the three and Foles expressed that this week by praising Reich, who was his former offensive coordinator and obviously played a key part in his career.

“He’s a guy that I admire more than anything,” Foles said Wednesday. “He’s a guy that has impacted my life so much, and he’s going to be on the opposing sideline, so that’s going to be fun. […] I think it will be emotional seeing him because of what he means to me. He’s one of the greatest people I’ve ever met, so when he went there I was so excited for him. But I’m going to go out there and play.”

When Eagles starting quarterback Carson Wentz went down in December of 2017 with a torn ACL in his left knee, nobody expected Foles to have the run that he did and lead the team to the playoffs. However, Reich (and DeFilippo) worked with the veteran to revitalize his career. Needless to say, Foles had the best year of his career, going 77-of-106 (72.6%) for 971 yards and six touchdowns in the postseason. He also ended up becoming the Super Bowl’s MVP as a result.

The Jags could have the edge going into Sunday’s game being that there is a lack of film on Foles. Then again, nobody knows Foles and DeFilippo as well as Reich does, so things could be rather interesting.
