Chiefs guards Joe Thuney, Trey Smith combine for impressive streak

#Chiefs guards Joe Thuney and Trey Smith share exceptional pass blocking streaks that have made them major assets in Andy Reid’s offense.

The Kansas City Chiefs offensive line is a talented bunch of experienced veterans, and with Super Bowl rings to show for their accomplishments, it is no wonder that guards Joe Thuney and Trey Smith have set themselves apart on the stat sheet in 2023.

The impenetrable tandem has become the only two players in the NFL with an active streak of 270 pass-blocking snaps without allowing a sack. This is a good indication of the duo’s effectiveness through six games of the season and should be a good omen for Patrick Mahomes’ health moving into the meat of the Chiefs’ 2023 schedule.

Kansas City’s offensive line got off to a shaky start in September, but with the help of Thuney and Smith, seem to have gotten back on track in recent weeks to become a significant asset for Andy Reid’s air attack.

Now, the pair of guards will just need to maintain their level of play to help push the reigning MVP to new heights in Kansas City’s Week 7 matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday.

Chiefs OL Joe Thuney played lights out in pass protection vs. Broncos

Joe Thuney put together an exceptional performance in the #Chiefs’ win over the #Broncos in Week 6.

The Kansas City Chiefs rely on their offensive line to keep Patrick Mahomes clean in the pocket, and one lineman in particular stood out in the team’s Week 6 victory over the Denver Broncos.

Veteran guard Joe Thuney was able to contain the Broncos’ pass rush in the win, allowing neither a sack nor a pressure in the Chiefs’ first divisional win of the 2023 season.

Games like this are commonplace for Thuney, who is an anchor for Kansas City in the middle of its front-five. His salty presence on the line has been a key part of the Chiefs’ offensive success in recent seasons, and his stellar performance against Denver is yet another feather in his highly decorated cap.

Though Mahomes has yet to return to MVP form through six games in 2023, the help he is getting from teammates like Thuney, Creed Humphrey, and Trey Smith is sure to help him regain his edge as Kansas City heads into the meat of its schedule.

Chiefs restructure massive contract after Chris Jones’ return

The #Chiefs restructured one of the biggest contracts on their books on Tuesday after Chris Jones ended his holdout.

The Kansas City Chiefs got creative with the numbers on Tuesday by restructuring veteran guard Joe Thuney’s contract to create $8.7 million in cap space. The move comes just a day after All-Pro defensive tackle Chris Jones ended his months-long holdout from team activities.

Kansas City had to get back under the NFL’s mandatory salary cap after agreeing to new terms with Jones, so this move isn’t out of the ordinary. Functionally, Thuney will now be un-cuttable for the Chiefs, who clearly had no intention of parting ways with the talented guard.

Now that Jones is back in the mix defensively, Kansas City should have a better chance to maximize their abilities against opposing offenses and test their mettle against the upstart Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 2.

Though Jones’ official status for the game is unknown, Chiefs fans can rest easy knowing that Kansas City’s star pass rusher is set to return to action soon.

Chris Jones fine tracker: Penalties piling up for star DT

Chris Jones has been fined a significant amount of money for his two-week absence from #Chiefs training camp in St. Joseph.

The announcement of Charles Omenihu’s suspension last week may have given star defensive lineman Chris Jones some leverage in his negotiations for an extension with the Kansas City Chiefs, but nothing is certain at this point. Jones is still being fined for each day of training camp that he misses at a rate of $50,000 per day, so his holdout from practices at Missouri Western State University comes at a steep price that ensures Kansas City’s front office still holds all the cards.

Last week when we looked at Jones’ accrued penalties he was sitting at somewhere between $400,000 and $500,000 owed back to the Chiefs for his absence. The $400,000 figure was calculated assuming that the fines started at midnight on Sunday, July 23, a day after Kansas City’s veterans reported to St. Joseph on July 22 and that he has not been accruing penalties for days that the Chiefs do not practice.

Now, though, even the calculation that assumes the most lenient punishment for his truancy has ballooned to $600,000 for 12 days of workouts missed, which is no small sum considering that Kansas City has not even begun its preseason exhibition schedule.

The more severe estimation, which sat at $500,000 last week, operates on the premise that fines are also being levied for days that the Chiefs do not practice. This would put him at $750,000 for 15 total absences from training camp in St. Joseph from July 23 until August 6.

Jones’ total cap number for the 2023 season remains $28,291,668 and these figures are starting to eat into his total pay for the year in a more significant capacity than they were last week. Now, Jones is set to effectively forfeit somewhere between two and three percent of his total cap number, with no sign of a resolution on the horizon.

The portion of Kansas City’s roster that decided to report to training camp, some 89 of the Chiefs’ 90 total players under contract, have been hard at work preparing for a championship defense while Jones figures out how to extract more money from the team’s delicate salary cap.

For his part, Jones is already the second-highest-paid player on the team, behind reigning MVP Patrick Mahomes. Jones makes about $6 million more than Joe Thuney, who commands the third-highest cap number, and his pay nearly doubles that of Travis Kelce, who accounts for $14,801,994 on the Chiefs’ books.

Joe Thuney offers advice on blocking for Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes

Kansas City #Chiefs guard Joe Thuney offered some advice on blocking for quarterback Patrick Mahomes. | from: @EdEastonJr

The secret to the Kansas City Chiefs’ success stretches beyond their marquee talent who are often publicized for their incredible exploits. A significant shift in recent years has been due to the Chiefs’ decision to fortify their offensive line to better protect quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Kansas City made a statement when they signed veteran guard Joe Thuney before the 2021 season. The investment in the offensive line gave Mahomes more time to operate and play his game, while a Pro Bowl guard with prior championship experience could show younger players the right way to get things done. Thuney gave insight on how he describes blocking for Mahomes during Friday’s post-practice press conference.

“I think [you have to] just play through the echo of the whistle,” Thuney explained. “It’s you never know what’s going to happen back there. When you’re blocking, and Pat’s [Patrick Mahomes] got the ball, he can make a lot of great plays happen and just, straight through the echo the whistle straight through it all and, you know, try and play with great technique and effort.”

Thuney has significantly adjusted his blocking techniques transitioning from the pocket passing style of Tom Brady to the improvisation of Patrick Mahomes. He has shown that veteran savvy to find the winning formula with two game-changing quarterbacks and is influencing the younger offensive linemen on the roster.

The NFL’s 12 best interior offensive linemen

From Wyatt Teller to Jason Kelce, here are the 12 best interior offensive linemen in the NFL today.

Of all the players who factor heavily into a football team’s success, guards and centers are often the most overlooked. Unless you’re working with advanced metrics, there are no statistics to speak of, and unless you have access to overhead and (especially) end zone footage, it’s hard to discern what these guys are doing that is so important.

But those in the know, know better. Centers control the entire offense — they make protection calls, they align with their quarterbacks both intellectually and literally on every snap, and they have to take the brunt of the opponent’s decisions to point one or more large angry men in their exact directions.

Guards are often the athletes of their offensive lines as much as tackles are — it’s just a different kind of athleticism. Whether on the left or right side, these big guys had better be able to execute inside and outside zone, man-based snaps in which it’s mano a mano, and all kinds of combinations in which it’s important to coordinate with others.

So, in the spirit of giving these fine gentlemen more play in the court of public opinion. we continue our position lists for the 2023 season with the 12 best interior offensive linemen in the NFL today.

In a recent version of “The Xs and Os” with Greg Cosell, Greg (of NFL Films and ESPN’s NFL Matchup) and Doug Farrar (of Touchdown Wire) got into the attributes for guards and centers at the elite level.
