Ohio State tight end Joe Royer enters transfer portal

In case yo missed it, another Buckeye in the transfer portal. #GoBucks

The 2023 version of the transfer portal for Ohio State is sucking players in at a rate we haven’t seen. The latest is tight end Joe Royer, who entered the transfer portal on Thursday night according to multiple reports.

That makes it a whopping 14 players now in the portal since it opened up on Monday, and it might not be over as other players continue to look at their options and what makes sense in their individual circumstances.

Out of Cincinnati Elder, Royer came to Ohio State as a pretty highly-regarded tight end. He was rated as the four-star prospect as the No. 8 tight end and 211th overall recruit in the class of 2020 according to the 247Sports ranking. Since arriving in Columbus though, his impact on the field has been marginal because of time lost because of injuries and others passing him on the depth chart.

He’s had just four catches for a total of 24 yards since 2021, and that includes just one catch for five yards this season.

As OSU looks ahead to next year and beyond, it was unclear what Royer’s role would be with the team despite losing Cade Stover to the NFL and Gee Scott Jr. to graduation. Jelani Thurman looks like the next playmaker at the position, and there are still a bevy of options on the roster in addition to him.

Wherever Royer lands, he’ll still have two years of eligibility left.

Four-star 2025 Oklahoma tight end is offered by Ohio State

The Buckeyes has offered the talented tight end #GoBucks

For a while, the [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] tight ends were pretty much a glorified offensive lineman, but head coach [autotag]Ryan Day[/autotag] is trying to change that narrative.

Day has recently seen Cade Stover make some impressive strides as a pass catcher and develop some depth behind him. [autotag]Joe Royer[/autotag] and [autotag]Gee Scott Jr.[/autotag] are next in line and early enrolling freshman Jelani Thurman has already made a positive impression.

The trend needs to continue and that starts with recruiting. In the 2024 cycle, the Buckeyes have a commitment from Tennessee’s Max LeBlanc, a very solid player.

There is no current commit in the 2025 cycle but Oklahoma’s [autotag]Nate Roberts[/autotag] is a target and was offered a scholarship on Tuesday morning.

Roberts is one of the top tight ends in the country, rated as the the No. 5 tight end and 126th overall player according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings. He also is a very good baseball player, showing that he’s not just a one-sport athlete. Roberts didn’t start playing the position until this past season, so although he is raw, the talent is there.

Ranking Ohio State tight ends by 247Sports composite recruiting rankings #GoBucks

The Ohio State football program has six tight ends on scholarship and thank goodness the stud of the group, Cade Stover, is coming back for another season. All six tight ends arrived in Columbus as highly touted recruits, but only Stover has lived up to his potential at moving over from linebacker.

It will be interesting to watch Gee Scott Jr. and his development continue from wide receiver to tight end, but most expected the jump last season to be much bigger. There is still a surprising amount of hype surrounding Joe Royer and there are murmurs that he will see more time than Scott, but only time will tell.

We rank the scholarship tight ends on the roster based on their 247Sports recruiting rankings. Off we go …

WATCH: check out these Spring Game highlights #GoBucks

The Ohio State Buckeyes have finished their spring practices and it looks like Scarlet earned the win over Gray to the tune of 34-0 and plenty of guys made some exciting plays including the usual suspects of C.J. Stroud and Jaxon Smith-Njigba, but we also got to see some new faces emerge as possible superstars like Evan Pryor.

It should be noted that all three quarterbacks threw for touchdown passes and Devin Brown looked extremely impressive completing 11 of his 24 passing attempts for 141 yards and a touchdown. Miyan Wiliams led all running backs with 15 carries for 101 yards and Evan Pryor was the leading receiver with four receptions for 44 yards, but let’s dive into highlights!

Joe Royer makes a great catch from Kyle McCord for a score in the Spring Game. #GoBucks

The Spring Game is underway and the offense is picking up right where it left off in Pasadena. To no one’s surprise, the Buckeye quarterbacks have come out slinging it. After C.J. Stroud hit Jaxon Smith-Njigba for a score on the first drive, Kyle McCord marched the offense down the field for another passing touchdown.

McCord found tight end, Joe Royer over the middle in the endzone where Royer made an outstanding grab for the score. Joe Royer is a guy who has been receiving high praise all spring. Both he and Gee Scott Jr. will be vying for touches and looking to replace Jeremy Ruckert who is headed to the NFL.

Check out Royer’s catch below.

As of now, the Scarlet team leads the Gray team by a score of 14-2. You can check out how the scoring system works for the game here.
