Sam Darnold, Mekhi Becton expected to play vs. Bills

Sam Darnold will be back under center on Sunday against the Buffalo Bills.

Sam Darnold will likely be back under center on Sunday against the Buffalo Bills.

Adam Gase said on Friday that Darnold will be the Jets’ starting quarterback this week barring a setback in practice on Friday. Darnold has been limited in practice this week and still has some pain in his shoulder, but it’s manageable enough for him to play.

Darnold was injured in Week 4 against the Denver Broncos when he was slammed into the ground on a sack. He left the game to get checked on by trainers but was able to return and finish the game. However, after further testing, it was revealed that Darnold had sprained his AC joint in his right shoulder. He has missed the Jets’ last two games and Joe Flacco has started in his place.

Darnold has struggled so far this season, as he’s thrown for 792 yards to go along with three touchdowns and four interceptions. Fortunately for Darnold, he could have his full cast of weapons for the first time this season.

Mekhi Becton will also make his return unless he has a setback in practice following a two-game absence with a shoulder injury.

Watch: Joe Flacco perfectly replicates the longest negative play in Super Bowl history

How had are the Jets? They’re now copying Super Bowl history — in all the worst ways.

It’s getting difficult to keep track of all the ways in which the Jets are setting all-time marks for offensive incompetence, but here’s one historical note from Miami’s 24-0 Sunday blowout of Adam Gase’s Symphony of Destruction. With 9:28 left in the game, and the Jets with the ball at the Miami 29-yard line on third-and-4, quarterback Joe Flacco took the ball from center and dropped back… and back… and back… until he was sacked for a 28-yard loss by Dolphins lineman Emmanuel Ogbah.

“I think there’s a lot of … These guys like playing together, so when other guys make plays, whether it’s offense, defense, special teams, you see a lot of excitement, a lot of energy,” Dolphins head coach Brian Flores said after the game, about Ogbah’s teammates being happy that this play took the Jets out of field goal range and preserved the shutout. “Guys were excited for Ogbah to make a play. Guys were excited about the situation, of getting a stop and getting them out of field goal range, and they were excited about the potential to get a shutout. That’s what I like to see, guys enjoying kind of the process of working through the week, prep and preparing, walk throughs, meeting, practice, and then going out and executing on a Sunday afternoon. I think they’re just happy for each other and kind of reaping some of the fruits of their labor.”

This maladjusted piece of offense immediately brought another play to mind involving the Dolphins. In Super Bowl VI on January 16, 1972, the Cowboys brought their long championship drought to an end with a commanding 24-3 win over Miami. Perhaps the spotlight play of that game was a 29-yard sack of Dolphins Hall of Fame quarterback Bob Griese by Cowboys Hall of Fame defensive lineman Bob Lilly. It is still the longest negative play in Super Bowl history, and the similarities are striking.

It was a long way for the then 11-year veteran to run, as he said after the game.

“I never thought I would ever catch him. I must have scrambled 100 yards, and defensive tackles aren’t supposed to do that.”

The 1972 Dolphins recovered from that loss to become the only perfect team in NFL history, and they won the next two Super Bowls. We do not expect the Jets to present a similar transformative result.

Watch: Jets’ Joe Flacco takes 28-yard sack

A 28-yard sack sums up the Jets’ season.

When you think things can’t get any worse, they can. Ask the winless and hapless New York Jets.

To the astonishment of anyone and everyone who has watched the NFL in any season, enjoy Joe Flacco as he drops back, back, back, back, back … and takes a 28-yard sack.

Honestly, one would think Flacco at his age wouldn’t have the speed to get 28 yards before being tackled.

Remember, Gang Green is a disease. The Jets are sad sacks.

How bad and inept have Adam Gase teams been?

‘Shocked’ Jets react to sudden departure of ‘great teammate’ Le’Veon Bell

Sam Darnold and Chris Herndon were among Jets players who were surprised by Le’Veon Bell’s release.

Like almost everyone else on Tuesday night, Jets players were taken aback by Le’Veon Bell’s release.

Surely, Bell’s Twitter liking spree and unwillingness to speak to the media didn’t go unnoticed in the locker room, but this wasn’t the resolution that anybody expected. Breshad Perriman, who was back at practice and speaking with reporters Wednesday, said he was “kind of shocked” by Bell’s release, per SNY. He added that Bell was a “great teammate” in their short time together.

Perriman and Bell only got the chance to play about 2.5 quarters of football with one another. Bell went down with a hamstring injury in the third quarter of Week 1, while Perriman has been out with a sprained ankle since Week 2.

Chris Herndon, meanwhile, echoed Perriman’s sentiments.

“It was surprising to all of us,” Herndon said, per SNY. “At the end of the day, he was a great teammate while he was here.”

Joe Flacco, who witnessed what Bell was capable of when they were with the Ravens and Steelers, said much of the same. While they got familiar with one another as teammates over the summer, Week 5 was their first opportunity to play with another.

While it’s no fault of Flacco’s, part of the reason why Bell is no longer a member of the Jets was his lack of usage in the passing game vs. Arizona. Flacco targeted him just one time. Still, the quarterback spoke glowingly of his now-former teammate.

“Since I’ve been here, Le’Veon’s been a really hard worker, good teammate, so I think there’s always a little bit of a level of surprise,” Flacco said.

The one who seemed to take the news the hardest was Sam Darnold, who built an affectionate relationship with Bell. The two formed a unique bond, with Bell being one of Darnold’s biggest backers and supporters.

“I wish nothing but the best for Le’Veon moving forward,” Darnold said, per Newsday. “Me and him texted each other after it happened, just said that I loved playing with him, and just wished him nothing but the best.”

Jets’ loss to Cardinals a reminder that it’s hard to evaluate Sam Darnold

Sam Darnold doesn’t look great after 30 games but the Jets failed him just as badly.

A brief glimpse at Sam Darnold’s 30-game career doesn’t look pretty. He’s only won 11 games, completed less than 60 percent of his passing attempts and his 1.2 touchdown-to-interception ratio is mediocre at best.

But pinning all of Darnold’s failure on the quarterback is a bit unfair if you look at what other teams around the league have done with their young quarterbacks and compare it to the Jets’ roster the past three seasons.

Just look at the team the Jets lost to in Week 5. The Cardinals only won five games in 2019 after drafting Kyler Murray first overall, but quickly upgraded their offense by trading for Kenyan Drake midway through the season and then trading for Pro Bowl wideout DeAndre Hopkins during the offseason. Hopkins and Drake alone combined for 193 total yards and two touchdowns on Sunday.

Imagine if the Jets had playmakers like that for Darnold.

Instead, Joe Douglas and the Jets organization surrounded Darnold with a makeshift offense, inadequate weapons on cheap contracts and a conservative offense that doesn’t play to Darnold’s strengths. He’s on pace for the worst statistical season of his short career, which almost assuredly would spell the end of his time with the Jets if New York lands the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 draft.

No one would fault the Jets for moving on from Darnold for someone like Trevor Lawrence after three bad seasons, but would a rookie quarterback fair any better?

The Jets have had one of the worst offenses in the league the past two years and their skill position players also rank among the worst. While teams like the Cardinals, Ravens, Bills and Browns built offenses around their young quarterbacks and added stars, the Jets let quality starters like Robby Anderson walk and brought in Breshad Perriman and Denzel Mims. Both have been injured pretty much all season and haven’t proven to be quality replacements. Le’Veon Bell and Chris Herndon are solid players, but the offense Adam Gase installed diminishes their talents.

Darnold has shown two sides of himself. One side looks like Aaron Rodgers with his ability to extend plays with his legs and launch improbable passes, but the other features poor decision-making that ends in bad throws or turnovers. A good coach, a stable of weapons and a sturdy offensive line could change that, but there’s no telling if either will come in time to rescue Darnold’s Jets career.

It would be much easier for the Jets to move on from Darnold if he showed no progress with a well-rounded team at his disposal. The bad decisions and turnovers would look even more glaring and his true ability would be revealed.

But that hasn’t been the case.

Darnold didn’t play in Week 5 but he wouldn’t have faired much better than Joe Flacco did against the Cardinals. There just isn’t enough firepower on offense for any quarterback to perform well. So evaluating Darnold based on incomplete assets isn’t a good representation of his skillset. He simply doesn’t have the necessary tools at his disposal to show off his true ability.

You could make the argument that a quality quarterback would play well despite the roster around him – and that’s true – but Darnold never really had a true chance to play up to his potential. Every team he’s played on never featured a star player and he was never given the opportunity to grow after he had to learn a new offense a year after entering the NFL.

Three years in and the Jets just don’t know any more about Darnold than they did in 2018. He’s operated the same as a rookie because he hasn’t been given the option to develop naturally. Is that reason enough to move on from him? Yes, maybe. But if the Jets trade him before the 2021 season – as some have speculated as recently as Sunday – they would be giving up on a player they never gave a fair shake.

Overreaction Monday: Cardinals back to winning ways after Sunday’s victory

The Cardinals convincingly beat the New York Jets this Sunday, showing signs of a talented team ready to make a playoff push.

The Arizona Cardinals convincingly beat the New York Jets on Sunday 30-10. It was a game they needed to win and were expected to win by a large margin. The win did feel like the Cardinals came to play much more than they did the previous two weeks.

Outside of an interception that was more just a great play by Jets LB Avery Williamson, Kyler Murray looked like himself again. DeAndre Hopkins continued his Offensive Player of the Year campaign by racking up 6 receptions for 131 yards and a score. Murray and Nuk seemingly dialed up the same play- a go route to the far sideline, twice to put the Jets away.

The Victory Monday feels will not be strong this week, as it is expected to be announced that All-Pro OLB Chandler Jones will miss the remainder of the season with a torn bicep. Jones, who has been an iron man for the Cards, is one of the few players that the team cannot afford to lose. Barring a change of direction, Arizona will lose one of its best players as the Cardinals prepare for the much more difficult part of their schedule.

The seemingly rejuvenated Cardinals need to keep momentum rolling and beat the Dallas Cowboys next Monday. Dallas themselves suffered a potentially fatal blow, losing star QB Dak Prescott to an ankle injury in a win over the Giants. The highly anticipated primetime matchup between the Cardinals and Cowboys will be without two of the NFL’s stars. Andy Dalton will serve as the quarterback in Prescott’s absence, who has been a quality starter for many years in his career.

After dropping disappointing games to the Lions and Panthers, the Cardinals sit at 3-2. Beating Dallas puts them at 4-2 heading into a home matchup against the red-hot Seattle Seahawks. That’s in Arizona, by the way, where we all know the Seahawks have had their way in the past few years.

On the topic of potentially losing Chandler Jones for the rest of the year, the Cardinals would be wise to search the market as the trade deadline approaches. The October 29th deadline gives Steve Keim enough time to possibly find some help for the pass-rushing unit. Without Jones, a veteran acquisition appears necessary given the talent in the NFC West (even if it is just a one-year rental).

If all comes to pass, the Cardinals will deeply miss Jones. Still, their rebound effort in New York re-ignites hope that we may see playoff football in the desert.

Jets first known team to punt twice on 4th & 1 in game’s first 5 minutes

The Jets offense continues to make history, but not in a good way.

The Jets offense continues to make history, but not in a good way.

New York became the first known NFL team to punt twice on 4th and 1 in the first five minutes of a game on Sunday, according to Pro-Football-Reference. Pro-Football-Reference’s database is only complete as far back as 1994.

On the Jets’ first drive of the game against the Cardinals, they were close to getting a first down on a pass to Jamison Crowder. However, he fell about a half-yard short, leading to a punt. On the Jets’ second offensive drive, they needed a yard for the first down, but Jeff Smith dropped an easy ball. Again, it led to another punt.

With Joe Flacco under center for the first time all season, the Jets offense is clearly still not in a rhythm in Week 5.

Justin Herbert is on an astonishing Super Bowl MVP run

Justin Herbert has faced Super Bowl MVPs in his first two starts and that easily could become four.

The Los Angeles Chargers had to start Justin Herbert against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 3 when a doctor somehow punctured Tyrod Taylor’s lung.

The rookie from Oregon has done quite well for himself in two losses.

And an oddity is going to continue in Week 5 week should the sixth overall pick meet the New Orleans Saints Monday at the Superdome.

How about opening your career against three Super Bowl MVPs?

That is exactly what Herbert would have done should he face Drew Brees and the Saints.

He went up against Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs in Week 3, an overtime loss.

In Week 4, all Herbert had to do was wage an arms war with the legendary G.O.A.T., Tom Brady.

And up next on the Chargers’ docket is Brees.

Believe it or not, the run could not end at three.

The Chargers play host to the New York Jets on Oct. 18, Week 6 if you are counting.

Sam Darnold is out this week as the Jets play host to the Arizona Cardinals.

And, yes, if Darnold is out for the game with the Bolts, the starting job would continue to go to Joe Flacco. You know, the MVP of XLVII for the Baltimore Ravens.
