Overreaction Monday: Cardinals back to winning ways after Sunday’s victory

The Cardinals convincingly beat the New York Jets this Sunday, showing signs of a talented team ready to make a playoff push.

The Arizona Cardinals convincingly beat the New York Jets on Sunday 30-10. It was a game they needed to win and were expected to win by a large margin. The win did feel like the Cardinals came to play much more than they did the previous two weeks.

Outside of an interception that was more just a great play by Jets LB Avery Williamson, Kyler Murray looked like himself again. DeAndre Hopkins continued his Offensive Player of the Year campaign by racking up 6 receptions for 131 yards and a score. Murray and Nuk seemingly dialed up the same play- a go route to the far sideline, twice to put the Jets away.

The Victory Monday feels will not be strong this week, as it is expected to be announced that All-Pro OLB Chandler Jones will miss the remainder of the season with a torn bicep. Jones, who has been an iron man for the Cards, is one of the few players that the team cannot afford to lose. Barring a change of direction, Arizona will lose one of its best players as the Cardinals prepare for the much more difficult part of their schedule.

The seemingly rejuvenated Cardinals need to keep momentum rolling and beat the Dallas Cowboys next Monday. Dallas themselves suffered a potentially fatal blow, losing star QB Dak Prescott to an ankle injury in a win over the Giants. The highly anticipated primetime matchup between the Cardinals and Cowboys will be without two of the NFL’s stars. Andy Dalton will serve as the quarterback in Prescott’s absence, who has been a quality starter for many years in his career.

After dropping disappointing games to the Lions and Panthers, the Cardinals sit at 3-2. Beating Dallas puts them at 4-2 heading into a home matchup against the red-hot Seattle Seahawks. That’s in Arizona, by the way, where we all know the Seahawks have had their way in the past few years.

On the topic of potentially losing Chandler Jones for the rest of the year, the Cardinals would be wise to search the market as the trade deadline approaches. The October 29th deadline gives Steve Keim enough time to possibly find some help for the pass-rushing unit. Without Jones, a veteran acquisition appears necessary given the talent in the NFC West (even if it is just a one-year rental).

If all comes to pass, the Cardinals will deeply miss Jones. Still, their rebound effort in New York re-ignites hope that we may see playoff football in the desert.

Why the Cardinals should bounce back against the Jets

Going into Week 5, the Arizona Cardinals travel to New York to face the Jets, one that could be a nice bounce-back game for the Cardinals.

We are four weeks into the NFL season and the Arizona Cardinals are starting to struggle early. They grabbed momentum early in the first two weeks of the season, including an impressive win against the San Francisco 49ers week one. However, the Cardinals have lost two straight against teams that many thought they should have beaten.

Going into Week 5, the Cardinals travel to New York to face the Jets, one that could be a nice bounce-back game for the Cardinals, especially since the NFC West is the most competitive division right now.

This team has struggled to keep guys healthy at key positions. The Jets are without starting quarterback Sam Darnold for this week’s matchup and will most likely not have receiver Breshad Perriman either. Joe Flacco will get the nod to start for the Jets this Sunday, who currently have the worst offense in the NFL, averaging just 278 yards per game.

The Cardinals are at the top half of the league’s defensive rankings. They have given up over 1,400 yards through four games. However, even though the Cardinals’ pass defense struggles a bit more than their run defense, the Jets have a receiving corps depleted by injuries. They drafted Denzel Mims, a standout wide receiver from Baylor, who has been sidelined with hamstring injuries. The Cardinals’ secondary is the weakest part of their defense. Granted, they did lose Robert Alford for the season and have had key players injured like Budda Baker, who was a full participant in practice on Wednesday. The Cardinals’ secondary have a chance to put on an impressive showing against a Jets receiving core that does not have a whole lot of consistency led by Jamison Crowder.

The Jets defense is among the bottom half of the league, giving up an average of 368.8 yards per game, according to ESPN. The Jets struggle immensely in the passing game, giving up 959 yards through the first four games. The Cardinals put up 224 passing yards against a healthy 49ers defense. Kyler Murray has a chance to have a field day against this Jets defense, who have struggled to contain players in the passing game.  Through the first four games of the season, the Cardinals have averaged 370.3 yards per game, according to ESPN.  DeAndre Hopkins has been nothing short of impressive in his first few games as a Cardinal and is continuing to show that he is one of if not THE best at his position.  Many wanted General Manager Steve Keim fired before the 2020 NFL Draft.  But, he has really started to prove himself with these past two offseasons.  From drafting Kyler Murray in 2019 to acquiring DeAndre Hopkins this past offseason, Keim has put the Cardinals on the map as a potential playoff team for the first time since 2015.

The Arizona Cardinals are struggling early, coming off of two straight losses from the Lions and Panthers. However, this week’s matchup against the New York Jets is a perfect opportunity for them to have a bounce-back game, especially with a tough schedule ahead of them.

Why Arizona Will Win

How healthy are the Jets? The team was sent home on Friday after a player received a positive test – it’s not like this was a team built to handle any sort of adversity. Assuming it’s all a go and the Jets are fine as a team, there’s no running game, the offense is last in the NFL in first downs, and coming up with points has been like pulling teeth. The Arizona running game – even though Kenyan Drake hasn’t been able to do much – should be able to control the clock and the game from the start.

Why New York Will Win

There’s a wee bit of hope for the ground game with LeVeon Bell back soon from his hamstring problem, but this week is about the passing attack with Joe Flacco about to give it a go. The Cardinal secondary has picked off just one pass and has been hit for 199 yards or more in each of the four games. The Jets have to start winging it around from the word go.

Fantasy Football Player To Watch

WR DeAndre Hopkins, Arizona
Hopkins comes off his quietest game of the season at Carolina, but the targets were still there – Kyler Murray threw at nine times. Now Hopkins faces a Jets secondary that was lit-up by the oh-so-vaunted Broncos combination of QB Brett Rypien to WR Tim Patrick last week and is about to get thrown on deep.

What’s Going To Happen

The Jets are getting an infusion of options at the skill spots, but the infrastructure still stinks. They’ll get enough points and offensive punch to at least be interesting, but the Cardinals will score whenever needed to get ahead and stay there.
