Former Alabama TE coach Joe Cox to join Lane Kiffin at Ole Miss

Former Alabama tight end coach Joe Cox to remain in the SEC

Anytime you hire a new head coach, staff changes are imminent. While some position coaches are retained, some are not. One coach not asked to remain on the staff led by Kalen DeBoer is tight end coach Joe Cox.

It didn’t take long for Cox to land on his feet as 247Sports is reporting that he will be joining Lane Kiffin at Ole Miss filling the same role.

Cox spent the last two seasons in Tuscaloosa coaching the tight ends under Nick Saban. Before coaching at Alabama, Cox had previous coaching stops at Colorado State, South Carolina, and Charlotte.

Cox played quarterback for the Georgia Bulldogs from 2005-09 under Mark Richt.

Former Georgia quarterback Joe Cox is on the move once again after accepting the role as tight ends coach at Ole Miss. Cox spent the last two seasons in the same role for Alabama.

Cox, 37, played for the Bulldogs from 2005-2009, starting at quarterback during the 2009 season. He finished his UGA career with 3,016 passing yards, 29 passing touchdowns and 16 interceptions.

Cox began his coaching career in 2014 as the offensive coordinator for Mallard Creek High School (Charlotte, North Carolina). HE then joined Mike Bobo, his former offensive coordinator at UGA, as a graduate assistant at Colorado State in 2015. After five seasons with the Rams, Cox joined Bobo at South Carolina as tight ends coach. In 2021, Cox joined Charlotte in the same role before making the move to Tuscaloosa in 2022.

Georgia last met Cox in the 2023 SEC Championship versus Alabama, a 27-24 loss by the Bulldogs. UGA will see Cox again next season, as Georgia will travel to Ole Miss on Nov. 9.

Alabama’s coaching staff extends offer to 2023 TE, Louisville commit Jamari Johnson

Alabama extended an offer to 2023 tight end Jamari Johnson on Tuesday. Johnson is currently committed to Louisville.

Alabama already has one hard commit at the tight end position in the 2023 recruiting class in former Ohio State commit, Ty Lockwood. Now, it appears that the coaching staff could be eyeing the addition of another tight end to the 2023 class. On Tuesday, Alabama extended an offer to 2023 tight end and Louisville commit Jamari Johnson.

Johnson plays for Inglewood High School in Inglewood, California. He has been committed to the Cardinals since April. However, a program like Alabama could be able to make a move to land the big tight end. Tight ends coach Joe Cox will have his work cut out for him in Johnson’s recruitment.

Johnson is intriguing because of his stature. He has a wide catch radius and can be used in a variety of different ways in Alabama’s offense led by offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien.

Roll Tide Wire previews Jamari Johnson’s recruiting profile below.

2024 TE Martavious Collins releases top schools, Alabama in good position

Alabama lands in top eleven for 2024 TE/ATH Martavious Collins. He is set to commit on July 20.

Alabama seems to be all in on recruiting Martavious Collins, one of the top tight ends of the 2024 class. The native of Rome, Georgia received an offer from the Tide a little over two months ago.

Upon receiving the offer, Collins tweeted, “Blessed to receive an offer from my dream school the University of Alabama.” That could be a good sign of things to come as Collins released his top-11 recently. He is set to announce his commitment on July 20.

The primary recruiters for Collins have been tight ends coach Joe Cox and offensive line coach Eric Wolford. As of right now, On3’s RPM is heavily in favor of Alabama at a 91.4% likelihood. Alabama fans should keep a close eye on his recruitment.
