Will J.K. Dobbins be ready for Week 1 fantasy lineups?

What kind of timeline can gamers expect from the rehabbing rusher?

Heading into last season, Baltimore Ravens running back J.K. Dobbins (knee) was among the most popular breakout candidates in all of fantasy football, and for good reason. As a rookie the Ohio State product carried the ball 134 times for 805 yards (an eye-popping 6.0 yards per carry) and nine touchdowns, and that was with veteran Mark Ingram (now with the New Orleans Saints) soaking up 72 carries. Once atop the depth chart, Dobbins appeared poised for a big sophomore campaign.

That all changed on Aug. 28 during the team’s final preseason game when Dobbins suffered a torn ACL that would cost him the entirety of 2021. Just over a year will have passed when the 2022 regular season kicks off for Baltimore on Sunday, Sept. 11, against the New York Jets, and both the team and player are hopeful that Dobbins will be on the field. There have been no reported setbacks in his recovery, and he’s been vocal about wanting to play in the opener.

Whether he will, however, remains unclear. Dobbins is currently on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, alongside No. 2 back Gus Edwards (knee), who is coming off his own torn ACL, and it’s doubtful the team will push either player after relying on retreads like Devonta Freeman and Latavius Murray last year — both remain unsigned, which tells you how they’re viewed around the league.

Still, it feels likely that Dobbins will be ready sooner than later; even if he misses a game or two out of the gates, odds are the Ravens will activate him before finalizing their 53-man roster, since keeping him on the PUP would require the third-year pro to miss a minimum of four games. Head coach John Harbaugh recently suggested we could see Dobbins return to practice as soon as Monday, Aug. 8, which would allow for a look at him prior to most owners draft.

Once he’s cleared, Dobbins should serve as the lead back. That shouldn’t be confused with being a workhorse in the vein of the Indianapolis Colts’ Jonathan Taylor, though, as head coach John Harbaugh has long liked to mix and match his backs, and he has a very capable No. 2 in Edwards, whenever he returns. Further down the depth chart is a mix of veterans like Mike Davis and Corey Clement, and unproven players like Justice Hill (Achilles) and rookie Tyler Badie.

While Dobbins figures to get the highest usage, bear in mind he entered the NFL with questions about his ability as a receiver, and he did little to answer those as a rookie when he caught just 18 passes for 220 yards. That could mean a limited role for the former Buckeye on obvious passing downs, though Edwards has done even less as a pass catcher, so perhaps Dobbins will surprise in that regard. Ultimately, this offense just doesn’t incorporate its backs in the aerial game enough to move the need in that regard.

Fantasy football outlook

There’s less buzz around Dobbins this year than last, but that could work in your favor as he’s likely to be available later in drafts. As a high-end RB3 with some upside, he’d be worth pulling the trigger. Be patient with his early-season returns.

Ravens HC John Harbaugh gives thoughts on RB JK Dobbins, OT Ronnie Stanley

Ravens head coach John Harbaugh discussed both running back JK Dobbins and OT Ronnie Stanley in their recoveries

The Baltimore Ravens are looking to bounce back from an injury-filled 2021 season which saw them go 8-9 and miss the playoffs for the first time since 2017. They should be getting plenty of reinforcements by way of the injured players that they lost last season, but it’s a matter of when they return to the field.

After Baltimore’s first full-team training camp practice of 2022, Ravens head coach John Harbaugh spoke to the media and was asked a series of different questions, including about both running back JK Dobbins and offensive tackle Ronnie Stanley. He said that Dobbins is itching to get back on the field, but the decision as to when that will be will made by doctors and the running back himself.

“Yes, J.K. [Dobbins] definitely wants to go. He’s made it very clear, and he’s not just clear in the fact that he tells everybody all the time. I told him again today, ‘I know how you feel about that. You’ve told me.’ But that’s up to the doctors and him, and they’ll work it out. As soon as he’s back out there, we’ll be coaching him really hard. He’s doing an individual period with the trainers right now. So, I’m excited to get him back, hopefully, soon.”

When talking about Stanley, Harbaugh talked about his body composition and said that he looks to be really close to where he was in the past when he was playing his best football.

“Yes, he was walking around, looking good. Yes, I’d agree with you on that. But I will say, his body composition was very good; he’s really close to where he’s been in the past when he’s been at his best. So, I give him a lot of credit for the training that he’s done. We’ll just get the ankle there, and I’m looking forward to getting him back out there.”

Both Dobbins and Stanley play a key role in the success of the Baltimore offense, and each provides a spark when they’re out on the field. It’s unclear when either will return, but both are working hard to make sure they’re as ready as they can be to suit up again.

Ravens place six players on PUP list ahead of training camp

The Ravens placed six players on the physically unable to perform list ahead of 2022 training camp

The Baltimore Ravens went through an extremely injury-plagued season in 2021, losing a massive amount of key contributors over the course of the year. The team had to continuously plug in different players at many different positions, and it resulted in an 8-9 season, missing the playoffs for the first time since 2017.

Baltimore is regarded as a strong bounce-back candidate in 2022 due to the amount of talent that they should be getting back on the field as they return from injuries. However, on Friday the team placed six of their players on the physically unable to perform list ahead of training camp in running backs JK Dobbins and Gus Edwards, offensive tackle Ronnie Stanley, outside linebacker Tyus Bowser, cornerback Marcus Peters and safety Ar’Darius Washington.

Dobbins, Edwards and Peters each tore their ACL before the 2021 season started, ending their year before it began. Stanley played in one game after suffering an ankle injury in 2020, but opted for a second surgery shortly thereafter. Bowser tore his achilles in Week 18 against the Pittsburgh Steelers, while Washington missed the back half of the season with a foot injury suffered in practice.

Players who are placed on the PUP list before training camp can come off of it at any time.

Ian Rapoport reacts to getting ‘dunked on’ by Ravens RB JK Dobbins

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reacted to getting “dunked on” by Ravens running back JK Dobbins

The Baltimore Ravens had no shortage of injuries in 2021, losing many of their key contributors to different ailments over the course of the season. Even before the year began, the team lost running backs JK Dobbins and Gus Edwards as well as cornerback Marcus Peters to torn ACL injuries.

On Monday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported that Dobbins was uncertain to be ready for Week 1 of 2022 and might have to spend time on the PUP list due to the extent of his injury. Dobbins responded on Twitter to Rapoport, putting out his own timeframe about his injury. Rapoport then made an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show”, where McAfee broke the news to Rapoport about Dobbins’ response, getting a live reaction from the reporter.

Warning: NSFW

Rapoport stuck by his source, but also made it clear that he hopes that Dobbins is ready for Week 1, as he said that would be the best outcome for all parties. The running back suffered his injury in late-August during a preseason game, so it’s almost been a year since the incident happened.

AFC North Watch: Ravens RB JK Dobbins disputes injury concern report

Every game matters in the rugged AFC and tough AFC North so Dobbins’ status early in the season, especially with the Ravens schedule, is important:

The Cleveland Browns best route to the NFL playoffs will always be through the AFC North but it may be even more important in 2022. With the additions of Russell Wilson, Matt Ryan, Von Miller, Davante Adams, Terron Armstead, Marcus Williams, Robert Woods, Randy Gregory and Khalil Mack coming over from the NFC, the AFC is even more stacked this year.

Getting a Wild Card spot is more of a wild chance than ever before.

The AFC North has some transition as Joe Burrow’s Cincinnati Bengals made it to the Super Bowl while the Pittsburgh Steelers are trying to figure out what is next after Ben Roethlisberger’s retirement.

Health is the top priority for the Baltimore Ravens, who finished last in the division in 2021. The team struggled after most of their running backs and secondary went down last year and fell apart when Lamar Jackson was injured. The injury to JK Dobbins put more pressure on Jackson to shoulder the load in the running game.

Earlier today, Ian Rapoport reported that Dobbins might not be ready for Week 1 only for the Ravens back to quote tweet the NFL Network reporter to dispute that report:

To his credit, Rapoport retweeted Dobbins and addressed the issue as it happened on the Pat McAfee Show stating he was confident in his source:

Baltimore has two tough games to start the season including hosting the Tennesee Titans in Week 1 on Thursday Night Football and visiting the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday Night Football the following week. Both teams made the playoffs in 2021 with the Titans holding the top seed in the AFC.

A healthy Dobbins would be helpful early in the year for Baltimore, time will tell whether Rapoport’s source ends up being right or if Dobbins is telling the truth about his health.

Ravens RB JK Dobbins responds to Ian Rapoport, provides update on recovery

Ravens running back JK Dobbins responded to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and provided an update on his recovery

The Baltimore Ravens are looking to bounce back in a big way during the 2022 season after they finished 8-9 in 2021, resulting in the team missing the playoffs for the first time since 2017. A big reason as to why the team struggled, especially during the back half of the year, was due to the massive amounts of injuries that they suffered at many different positions.

One of the areas where Baltimore was hit the hardest was at running back, where J.K. Dobbins, Gus Edwards and Justice Hill all suffered season-ending injuries before the season began. On Monday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported that Dobbins is unlikely to be ready for Week 1 as he recovers from his torn ACL. However, Dobbins responded to Rapoport and then put out a series of other tweets, even providing an update on his recovery.

Ian Rapoport provides update on Ravens RB JK Dobbins

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network provided an update on Baltimore Ravens running back J.K. Dobbins

The Baltimore Ravens suffered numerous injuries over the course of the 2021 season. Even before the start of the year, the team lost multiple key contributors, including running backs JK Dobbins, Gus Edwards and Marcus Peters to torn ACLs.

On Monday, NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport provided an update on the recovery of Dobbins and where he stands in regards to his potential status for Week 1 of the 2022 season. He relayed information from a source that said that the third-year running back is “no sure thing” for Week 1. Rapoport made it clear that there haven’t been any setbacks, but that his injury was a serious one.

Many expected Dobbins to be one of the breakout stars of the 2021 NFL season after coming off of a rookie year in which he led all running backs with 6.0 yards per carry while breaking Baltimore’s rookie touchdown record. He didn’t get the chance to show what he was capable of to follow up his sensational first season, but should have that chance at some point in 2022, regardless of if he starts the year on the PUP list or not.

Fantasy football draft: Where to draft Baltimore Ravens RB J.K. Dobbins

Analyzing Baltimore Ravens RB J.K. Dobbins’ 2021 fantasy football ADP and where you should target him in your drafts.

Baltimore Ravens RB J.K. Dobbins should be the lead back in one of the most electric running offenses in the NFL, boosting his fantasy expectations in the upcoming season. Below, we look at J.K. Dobbins‘ 2021 fantasy football average draft position (ADP) and where you should draft him.

Coming out of Ohio State with the second-most career rushing yards in program history, Dobbins put on a show as a rookie in the NFL.

However, he split carries with RB Gus Edwards, RB Mark Ingram (now with the Houston Texans) and QB Lamar Jackson. With Edwards and Jackson back, Dobbins will have a limit ceiling this coming season.

Dobbins’ ADP: 41.17

(ADP data courtesy of MyFantasyLeague.com)

Dobbins is being selected as the 19th running back off the board.

He’s the second Raven drafted behind former MVP Jackson. Dobbins has been taken as high as No. 10, likely in a keeper league, and as low as 74, likely in a two-quarterback PPR league.

Dobbins is a player which format could drastically change his value.

Dobbins’ 2020 stats

Rushing: 134 carries, 805 yards

Receiving: 18 receptions, 120 yards

Touchdowns: 9 rushing

Where should you take Dobbins in your fantasy football draft?

Dobbins should be taken in the early fourth round in PPR leagues. In standard leagues, given that he’s not much of a pass catcher, it’s reasonable that he could go at the end of the third.

While Dobbins is only 22, he’s likely still not being considered as a keeper unless a league has three or more keepers. He should be retained on any dynasty team.

Dobbins had an elite 6.0 yards per carry. It was the third-best in the league and the best for running backs. Jackson and Arizona Cardinals QB Kyler Murray ranked 1 and 2, respectively.

If Dobbins is unleashed as the main, three-down back, which is unexpected, he could be a steal in the fourth or fifth round. For now, in standard leagues, early fourth makes the most sense with him being an early fifth-round pick in PPR formats.

Bills vs. Ravens: 3 keys to victory for both teams

Buffalo Bills, Baltimore Ravens three keys to victory in Divisional round for both teams.

The Bills find themselves two wins away from a potential Super Bowl appearance. However, the team is taking it one game at a time. Wisely, of course, because an opponent that has been on a hot streak similar to them is up next, as the Baltimore Ravens (11-5) come to Buffalo (13-3) for the Divisional round.

The added layer to all of this? Two of the 2018 NFL QB Draft Class squaring it off to earn a right to the Conference Championship in Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson.

With that, here are three keys to the game for both teams:

Baltimore Ravens

1. Rush hour

Baltimore has won a large chunk of their games with a strong rushing attack and a solid defense. They are the No. 1rushing offense for a reason, though. Between Jackson, and their multitude of running backs, including rookie sensation J.K. Dobbins, Gus Edwards, Mark Ingram when he isn’t a healthy scratch, and more.

The Ravens can run in many ways, and that makes them dangerous in any situation. The Bills defense, while better defending against the run, still gives up a lot on the ground, and no team is better this year at making people pay for it like Baltimore does.

Sticking with the run helps Jackson in the passing game, which hasn’t been his strength over his NFL career, and it also helps keep Allen off of the field. As long as the Ravens can score, there’s pressure on Allen to make things happen in a quick amount of time.

2. Play to Jackson’s strength in the passing game

With all due respect to the former league MVP, Jackson is not a pass-first quarterback. His highest passing yards total was in Week 1 with 275 passing yards. In fact, of the 16 games that he’s played this season, including last week against the Titans, Lamar only has five games where he passed for more than 200 yards. Jackson also had a 97-yard passing game against Kansas City in Week 3.

While the Ravens have still won in most of their games this season, it shows that Jackson may have limitations as a passer. For Jackson to succeed as a passer against Buffalo, he should take a page out of the Colts playbook from last week and attack the middle of the field often. Jackson’s deep ball isn’t dependable, but middle of the field is deadly accurate.

Last week, the Colts tight ends were successful in moving the ball downfield. This may be something that the Ravens want to explore, as Jackson can use a mix of fake handoffs to throw off defenses, and hit his receivers in a reasonable range.

3. Why stop at your first win?

Jackson came into 2020 with several unfair stigmas against him. One of those, being his inability to win a playoff game. The still very young quarterback is currently in his third trip to the postseason, but has lost in the first round to the Chargers in 2018, and the Titans in 2019. While wins are a unfair quarterback trait, Jackson finally got his first last week against the Titans.

For the Ravens; sake, and even for Jackson, the satisfaction of that one victory cannot be the end goal. Baltimore seems to be fighting for something more than just getting that proverbial “monkey off of their back.” but how they perform when the bright lights are on this Saturday will show.

With how hot that the Ravens have been playing, there is real Super Bowl ambitions. They’ll have to bring their best, and like the Colts almost did last week, play a perfect game against a red-hot Bills team.
