On this day in Celtics history, Shelden Williams and Gene Englund were born, a number of players debuted and John Hazen passed.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, former Boston big man Shelden Williams was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma in 1983.

An alum of the Duke Blue Devils where he won NABC Defensive Player of the Year honors twice and made First Team All-American among other honors, Williams was taken fifth overall by the Atlanta Hawks in the 2006 NBA draft. He would play parts of two seasons before being dealt to the Sacramento Kings in February of 2009, and the Oklahoman would later be dealt to the Minnesota Timberwolves as well.

He would sign with the Celtics as an unrestricted free agent in August of that same year.

On this date in 2017, the Boston Celtics traded veteran guard Avery Bradley to the Detroit Pistons for forward Marcus Morris.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, veteran combo guard Avery Bradley was traded with draft assets to the Detroit Pistons for forward Marcus Morris Sr. as part of the process of making cap space on the roster after signing Utah Jazz Star Gordon Hayward in 2017.

Avery, a 6-foot-3, 180-pound native of Tacoma, Washington, was drafted by the Celtics out of the University of Texas with the 19th pick of the 2010 NBA draft. The former Longhorn quickly made a name for himself as one of the league’s best man-to-man defenders while coming up with the aging core of the 2008 title team.

In total, the former Texas standout played for the team for seven seasons, averaging 12.1 points, 3.1 assists, and 1.7 rebounds per game.

On this day: 3 players lost to 1967 expansion draft; Amir Johnson born

On this day, ex-Boston Celtics big man Amir Johnson was born, and three players were taken from the team in the 1967 NBA expansion draft.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, the team would lose several players to the expansion draft held in 1963 to populate two new teams being added to the league.

Expansion drafts function similarly to the regular draft, except the team or teams joining the league can raid the rosters of existing teams for players save for a certain number of “protected” players each team can prevent from being drafted away to the expansion team or teams.

The new teams in question would be the San Diego Rockets and Seattle Supersonics, the former now relocated in Houston, Texas as the Houston Rockets since relocating to Texas in 1971, and the latter now the Oklahoma City Thunder since moving to that state in 2008. Boston would lose three players in total to the two expansion teams.

During an appearance on the “Runnin’ Plays” podcast, Jim Barnett — who was drafted and played one season in Boston — shared a story about the time Bill Russell was given a key to the city just before a game the Celtics played in a Southern state. Following the game, the black players on the team were denied entry into a hotel because of the color of their skin. In response, Russell returned the key to the town’s mayor.
