Q&A with JJ Redick: ‘I’m more obsessed with basketball now than I’ve ever been’

Redick: “When I become obsessed, it becomes an encyclopedia up in this brain.”

If you’ve followed basketball for the past two decades, you are very familiar with JJ Redick and likely have strong opinions about him.

Reddick had an accomplished career on the basketball court. The former national collegiate player of the year at Duke finished his NBA career ranked in the top 20 all-time among all NBA players in total 3-pointers made and 3-point percentage. He also ranks top-10 in career free-throw percentage.

But he has since become just as prolific and relevant off the court.

RELATED: JJ Redick absolutely ripped Chris Russo on First Take for saying Draymond Green should ‘be quiet and play’

Redick was the first NBA player (and the second active pro athlete) to host a podcast during the regular season. He now appears on ESPN’s First Take and offers his unique perspective when he provides color commentary for NBA games on the ESPN/ABC telecast.

He was recently nominated for a Sports Emmy for Emerging On-Air Talent.

Redick caught up with us over Zoom to discuss his journey from becoming one of the all-time most hated players in college basketball (even though he doesn’t like to think of himself that way) to the beloved basketball media personality that he is now.

This interview has been condensed and edited for clarity.

Brutal camera angle shows the second the Pelicans’ hearts ripped in half after Klay Thompson 3

What widespread sadness across the board.

For most of Tuesday night, the Golden State Warriors and New Orleans Pelicans were locked in quite the battle. But then the fourth quarter came around, and the Warriors managed to pull away with a 35-20 final stanza to win 120-119.

It’s a painful loss for the Pelicans, who are barely hanging on at 38-38 in eighth place in the Western Conference standings. Their dejection was perfectly captured in a comparison video from KNBR’s Sam Hustis.

After Klay Thompson nailed a dagger three to give the Warriors a 118-103 lead with mere minutes remaining, this camera angle shows a seemingly beyond-depressed Pelicans bench reacting to another defeat.

From Zion Williamson to head coach Willie Green, you could indeed pinpoint the exact moment New Orleans’ heart breaks into two:

Woof. That’s almost too tough to watch. Simon & Garfunkel’s timeless classic song about sadness might not do this camera angle proper justice.

Rockets rookie Jabari Smith Jr. enjoys ‘special moment’ of game winner

“I felt like I was in a video game,” #Rockets rookie Jabari Smith Jr. says. “It was crazy. It was like I didn’t see anybody else. The gym went blank; it was just me and him.”

HOUSTON — The Rockets’ young and energetic team had every right to be excited about playing another game in front of their home crowd, coming off two big season wins against the Boston Celtics and the Los Angeles Lakers. They were also elated to have an opportunity to win three games in a row for the first time this season.

Yet, when they took the court Friday, it looked as if they were still stuck in the past two games. New Orleans raced out to a 26-12 lead midway through the first quarter, seemingly before the Rockets realized they were playing a game. They looked sluggish on defense, allowing the Pelicans to go 6-for-6 from 3-point range.

It seemed like one of those nights where Houston’s youth and inexperience would kick in, and New Orleans would run their rebuilding opponents off the court. By the third quarter, the Rockets were falling consistently victim to open jump shots by Brandon Ingram and physical post play from Jonas Valanciunas.

“For a while, JV (Jonas Valanciunas) was just going at us and posting us up,” said Rockets head coach Stephen Silas. “We tried to do different things, as far as Alpi (Alperen Sengun) and having Uz (Usman Garuba) guard him. In the second quarter, we put Bobi (Boban Marjanovic) on him for a little while. We double-teamed him. We did a little bit of everything.”

Adding to the problem, Houston’s young players seemingly allowed the officials to get inside their heads in the second and third quarters. It started to look like the rebuilding Rockets of old, who would often mentally check out of games when they faced adversity.

But this differs from the adolescent team the Pelicans defeated twice earlier this season. This team of young players has grown over the last eight games, in which they’ve posted a 5-3 record.

Over that time, the Rockets have built chemistry and morale, which are traits they can take with them into next season. On Friday, they never gave up hope. Even by 14 points with under 10 minutes left, Houston knew it had to get back to playing its brand of basketball.

For the Rockets, that brand is playing with hustle, grit, and determination. It’s something Pelicans head coach Willie Green said he expected Houston to do coming into Friday’s game.

“They are a young team, and they are talented,” Green said in his pregame press conference. “If you don’t take them seriously to start the game and have a level of discipline of how you approach the game, you can run into trouble real quick,”

Trouble is what New Orleans had over the game’s final nine minutes, as the Rockets went on a 23-13 run to cut the lead from 14 to just a point. After Ingram missed a shot, Kevin Porter Jr. was able to secure the rebound, leading to Houston’s timeout with 4.0 seconds left.

To inbound the ball, Silas elected to go with one of his better passers in forward Jae’Sean Tate. He looked things over and waited, hoping to find Porter or Jalen Green heading toward the basket.

But both options were closed off to Tate. Instead, he went with his final option of throwing the ball to Jabari Smith Jr. in the backcourt, who methodically advanced his way past midcourt.

Smith clapped his hands at a rapid pace, signaling Tate to pass him the ball. When he received it, he took two dribbles to his right and rose above 6-foot-7  forward Naji Marshall and buried a 3-pointer, giving the Rockets a 114-112 lead with 0.4 seconds remaining. That shot provided Houston with the winning margin after the Pelicans failed to inbound the ball over Marjanovic’s outstretched arms.

“I wasn’t the first option. But as the first few options weren’t open, I just flashed to the ball and just trusted myself,” said Smith, whose game-winning basket was his only shot attempt in the fourth quarter.

“I felt like I was in a video game. It was crazy. It was like I didn’t see anybody else. The gym went blank; it was just me and him. It was a special moment, for sure.”

Houston (18-52), which is now on its first three-game winning streak of the season, will look to extend its winning streak to four games when they face the Pelicans again on Sunday at Toyota Center. New Orleans (33-37) remains in the Western Conference playoff race.

Pelicans coach Willie Green fondly recalls time playing for Sixers

New Orleans Pelicans coach Willie Green fondly recalls his time as a member of the Philadelphia 76ers during his playing days.

PHILADELPHIA — Before Willie Green became the head coach of the New Orleans Pelicans in 2021, he spent 12 seasons playing in the NBA. The first seven of those came as a member of the Philadelphia 76ers. He played 422 games with the franchise, starting 211.

Green played alongside Allen Iverson, Andre Iguodala, Thaddeus Young, Lou Williams and others while helping the Sixers make the playoffs in 2005, 2008 and 2009. He averaged 9.4 points and 1.9 rebounds with the Sixers.

As he made his return to the Wells Fargo Center on Monday, Green recalled his time and some memories with the franchise.

“I had a few of them, man,” said Green. “A few playoff runs, just having an opportunity to watch Allen play every night and play alongside him was special, but my experience in general here was a special one. My first seven seasons in the NBA so definitely always brings back good memories.”

Green continued to give a lot of love to the Philadelphia fan base. This is one of the more passionate fan bases in all of sports, and they let it be known what they expect out of their teams.

“It brings back so many memories, coming to this city,” he said. “This is where I was fortunate, blessed to get my start and what a start. Brotherly love. Big-time sports town. They boo you if you stink. They cheer for you if you do well, but really educated fan base here.”

Victor Wembanyama is taking every opportunity to improve. That’s what makes him confident in responding to Shaquille O’Neal. “I haven’t really seen anybody pressure him. I’ve seen a lot of offense. But when you’re playing against the 7-footer, you got to take it to him. The true test is when he gets there, and Zion is going to come at him. Embiid is going to come at him. Joker is going to come at him. So that will be a true test,” Shaq shared his views on Wembanyama’s potential in House of Bounce. “Right now, all the clips I’m seeing on him are just about him offensively. 7’3, with a great soft touch, and he plays like a guard. But it depends on him if he wants to be the best big man ever,” he concluded. -via BasketNews / November 11, 2022

Pelicans coach Willie Green has admiration for Sixers legend Allen Iverson

New Orleans Pelicans coach Willie Green discusses his admiration for Philadelphia 76ers legend Allen Iverson.

Before becoming coach of the New Orleans Pelicans before the 2021-22 season, Willie Green played 12 seasons in the NBA, including his first seven with the Philadelphia 76ers.

A second-round pick in 2003, Green cut his teeth with the Sixers and played with one of the franchise’s icons, Allen Iverson. Green was a young 3-and-D player playing next to The Answer and learned a lot playing next to him.

While Iverson is obviously known for his ruthless scoring and his ability to lift the team on his shoulders whenever the time called for it, he was also a great teammate as well. He was always there for his team every night no matter how he was feeling.

In an interview with Kevin Garnett, Green explained how Iverson’s lessons help him as a coach with the Pelicans as he is teaching Brandon Ingram, CJ McCollum, and Zion Williamson how to mesh together:

First of all, Allen, one of my all time favorite basketball players and teammates. Just having the opportunity to be on that team and learn from him. The one thing about him is he was relentless no matter what, he’s coming at you, but he also, he doesn’t get enough credit for this, he trusts his teammates. So I just remember one time, I’m a rookie, I get in the game, he passed me the ball, I passed right back to him, and he cussed me out. He said ‘If I give you the ball, I’m giving you the ball because I want you to do something with it. Don’t worry about getting it back to me. I’m gonna have 30 by the end of the game. You ain’t got to worry about that young fella. Ima have 30, but they’re leaving you open and I trust that you can do something with it. Go.’ and so it taught me a lot and those are some of the things that I’m sharing with Brandon, I’m sharing with CJ, Zion is like you guys gonna be elite no matter what, but you also help them become better players and you take them with you by trusting them. Because in the meat of a game, they may have to hit a shot. It’s gonna get back to your hands, but you just got to continue to make the right plays.

Iverson’s legacy in the game of basketball will always live on as he has done so much to move the game forward and he has had a huge impact on the Sixers as well. It appears that Green has done a good job of applying what he has learned from Iverson as he has the Pelicans trending in the right direction.
