7 pending free agents most likely to leave Ravens this offseason

The Baltimore Ravens have quite a few big names entering free agency. These are the few that are most likely to leave this offseason.

AS the 2021 NFL offseason gets underway, the Baltimore Ravens will first turn their attention to their own players. With 16 unrestricted free agents set to hit the open market currently, there is plenty of work to be done still.

Under general manager Eric DeCosta, the Ravens have had a clear priority to bring back their own top pending free agents early, allowing them to have a solid core to build off of throughout free agency and the draft. But with a tight wallet thanks to the salary cap being expected to go down for the first time in over a decade, Baltimore will have to either get guys to come back for cheap or be frugal with who they re-sign. That opens up the opportunity for quite a few familiar names to have new homes in 2021.

Let’s take a closer look at the seven Ravens’ pending free agents most likely to leave this offseason.

Ravens pending free agents priority list: Who should Baltimore call first?

In total, Baltimore has 24 pending free agents they’ll have to discuss.

The Baltimore Ravens played their final game of the season and have made a clear transition into the offseason. Coach John Harbaugh and general manager Eric DeCosta have held their annual season-ending press conferences and some initial roster moves have been completed. But as the Ravens begin the offseason, the very top of their to-do list involves figuring out their own roster and pending free agents.

In total, Baltimore has 24 pending free agents they’ll have to discuss. Who should be brought back and at what cost? Those are the questions only the front office can truly answer as they measure production (both current and potential) against what it’ll likely cost to re-sign them and try to fit it all into a very tight salary cap situation.

But with our general manager hats on, we here at Ravens Wire wanted to take a closer look at who we’d be calling if we were in control. Four of us independently ranked our free-agent priorities — not based on expectations of cost or who we felt would return — but on who we’d be most eager to start negotiations with.

Take a look below to see how we ranked the Ravens’ free-agent priorities and a quick analysis of why we placed them in their respective positions.

Ravens activate Calais Campbell, 2 others off Reserve/COVID-19 list

The Baltimore Ravens are down to just 10 players on the Reserve/COVID-19 list after activating Calais Campbell and two others Saturday.

Slowly but surely, the Baltimore Ravens are getting players back on the 53-man roster. After putting 23 total players on the Reserve/COVID-19 list over the 10-day lead up to their Week 12 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Ravens activated three off the list on Saturday.

According to Baltimore’s Twitter account, the Ravens activated defensive end Calais Campbell, running back Mark Ingram, and defensive end Jihad Ward from the Reserve/COVID-19 list. That leaves Baltimore with just 10 players — including quarterback Lamar Jackson — on the Reserve/COVID-19 list as of right now.

The Ravens don’t play the Dallas Cowboys for Week 13 until Tuesday. After needing to reschedule Week 12’s game against the Steelers three separate times, Baltimore’s Week 13 game against the Cowboys was also moved back twice. That means there’s still a chance other impact players like Jackson and fullback Patrick Ricard could still return to the 53-man roster. However, with the Ravens being mum about any player’s status and time running out to get anyone on the practice field before the game, there are no guarantees even these three players will actually suit up Tuesday.

Ravens added serious size to defensive line this offseason

Signing Calais Campbell, Derek Wolfe, Jihad Ward, and Justin Ellis; the Baltimore Ravens added 1,222 pounds to their defensive line

[jwplayer 7OkHTDSV-ThvAeFxT]

The Baltimore Ravens came into the offseason with a clear objective of improving their defensive line. After struggling against the run at times last season, the hope is that beefing up the trenches will improve upon the defense’s weakest unit and help guide the Ravens to a Super Bowl.

With the addition of Calais Campbell via a trade with the Jacksonville Jaguars and the signing of unrestricted free agent Derek Wolfe, Baltimore has done exactly that. When combined with the re-signings of Justin Ellis and Jihad Ward, the Ravens have signed contracts with defensive linemen totaling 1,222 pounds this offseason.

Player Height Weight
Calais Campbell 6-foot-8 300 pounds
Derek Wolfe 6-foot-5 285 pounds
Justin Ellis 6-foot-2 350 pounds
Jihad Ward 6-foot-5 287 pounds

When added to the size of Brandon Williams, Daylon Mack and Patrick Ricard, the Ravens have over 2,200 pounds available on their defensive line.

Winning consistently in football is tough to do but for offenses looking to run the ball effectively inside against the Ravens, they’ll have the difficulty of moving a defensive line that averages 316 pounds. If Baltimore wants to put their serious weight upfront in obvious run situations, they can use Ellis, Daylon Mack and Brandon Williams together to create a defensive front that totals in at 1,026 pounds. That has all the looks of an impenetrable wall already.

Of course, adding more size to the defensive line is just one portion of what the Ravens need to do to remedy their run defense. Finding good inside and outside linebackers either in the 2020 NFL Draft or free agency will take advantage of the wall of meat Baltimore has in the trenches. However, those players will now find it easier to set the edge and scrape down to make plays on the ball carrier without having to battle through offensive linemen.

Though maybe not intentional, the Ravens have also helped their pass defense as well and could create even more turnovers in 2020 thanks to the height of their signings. Campbell alone is 6-foot-8, which will lead to plenty of passes batted down at the line of scrimmage or tipped into the air. With Wolfe and Ward both standing at 6-foot-5, opposing quarterbacks will find throwing lanes more cluttered with the hands and arms of defenders.

Wolfe and Campbell are no slouches when it comes to providing a pass rush from the interior either. Last season, the pair combined for 13.5 sacks and 51 pressures over 28 total games Between their height potentially blocking short and intermediate receivers for quarterbacks and their ability to get penetration keeping passers from sitting in the pocket on deep throws, the Ravens have massively revamped their entire defense thanks to the big boys up front.

Sometimes, in the game of football, size matters. And now Baltimore has it in spades on their defensive line.

Ravens announce they re-signed DE Jihad Ward on 1-year deal

The Baltimore Ravens continue to keep their own and revamp their defensive line by re-signing DE Jihad Ward in free agency

[jwplayer 1Of71mAD-ThvAeFxT]

As previously reported and expected, the Baltimore Ravens are bringing back defensive end Jihad Ward. According to the team’s Twitter account, they’ve re-signed Ward to a one-year deal.

Baltimore has worked hard to bring back several of their key contributors for last season. Though Ward was added late, he quickly found a role for himself at defensive end and helped transform the Ravens’ defense from one of the worst units in the league into a fourth-place ranking by the end of the season. Ward played in 11 games for Baltimore in 2019, playing 38% of the entire season’s defensive snaps. He accounted for two fumble recoveries and one sack over those games.

It’s another step in the Ravens’ attempts to revamp their defensive line. Baltimore traded for Jacksonville Jaguars defensive end Calais Campbell, signed former Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle Michael Brockers and re-signed Justin Ellis. All these moves should help the Ravens stuff the run better, something they struggled with at times last season and ultimately was the reason for their early departure in the playoffs.

Report: Ravens finalizing deal to re-sign DE Jihad Ward

The Baltimore Ravens continue to work on re-signing their own players and are looking to bring back a major contributor in DE Jihad Ward

The Baltimore Ravens are busy as free agency closes in. With the legal tampering period beginning on March 16, the Ravens continue to work on re-signing their own pending free agents. They locked up wide receiver and return specialist De’Anthony Thomas on a one-year deal and used the franchise tag on outside linebacker Matthew Judon.

Now Baltimore is closing in on defensive end Jihad Ward, according to The Athletic’s Jeff Zrebiec. A recent tweet by Ward appears to back up the idea he’s returning to Baltimore, referring to how the Ravens’ season ended unexpectedly in the playoffs to the Tennessee Titans.

Ward was among the Ravens’ midseason additions that helped transform the defense from one of the worst units in the NFL into a defense that ranked fourth by the end of the season. Though he didn’t start any of the 11 games he played for Baltimore in 2019, his 372 defensive snaps (38%), two fumble recoveries and one sack prove he was a major contributor.

The Ravens also need the depth on the defensive line. After starting last season with just five players on the roster, Baltimore was hit with injuries and some lackluster play at times, forcing them to bring in Ward, Domata Peko and Justin Ellis in the middle of the season. Currently, the Ravens have just two defensive ends on the roster — Chris Wormley and Ufomba Kamalu — and with Michael Pierce among Baltimore’s pending free agents, they’d be a little thin in the trenches if the season were to start right now.

Week 11 snap counts: Ravens leaning on midseason additions

Beating the Houston Texans, 41-7, allowed the Baltimore Ravens to sit much of their starting lineup for half of the fourth quarter. It’s the third time this season Baltimore has been out to such a large lead they’ve been able to bench impact players during the game.

On the snap counts for Week 11, we see that reflected as guys like Robert Griffin III, Patrick Mekari and Bennett Jackson got some playing time when they normally wouldn’t. But when I looked a little closer at the snap counts, something interesting popped off the page for me.

On defense, the Ravens saw their midseason additions get significant playing time. In this game, six different players added in Week 5 or later played at least 34% of the defensive snaps. In many cases, these free-agent signings and trade acquisitions actually played more snaps than their long-tenured counterparts.

For instance, cornerback Marcus Peters played 100% of the defensive snaps, significantly more than the 67% Jimmy Smith and 7% Anthony Averett played. Linebackers L.J. Fort (48%) and Josh Bynes (39%) played more than Patrick Onwuasor (15%). Jihad Ward (56%) played more than Brandon Williams (54%). Even Justin Ellis (34%) and Domata Peko (36%) — added last week — played a significant amount.

I contend the Ravens are the best team in the NFL, and a large part of that argument revolves around their defensive turnaround over the last six games. With six players added during the season getting significant playing time in their Week 11 win, a giant glowing sign points to general manager Eric DeCosta’s work behind the scenes.

Seven of the 21 players of the active defensive roster this week were added during the season. That group accounted for 195 of the 671 total defensive snaps (29.1%) against the Texans. That’s practically unheard of for a group that’s playing this well and a testament to both DeCosta and the coaching staff for finding them, signing them and getting them up to speed so quickly.
