Cardinals elevate CB to play vs. Jets in Week 10

For the second time in three weeks, Wilson gets elevated to the active roster.

The Arizona Cardinals announced a single roster move on Saturday to get ready for their Week 10 home game against the New York Jets. They elevated cornerback Divaad Wilson from the practice squad to the active roster.

Wilson was elevated once two weeks ago and played special teams in Week 8 against the Miami Dolphins.

The Cardinals cut defensive back Darren Hall this week when they acquired linebacker Baron Browning in a trade with the Denver Broncos. Hall played regularly on special teams.

It gives the Cardinals six cornerbacks to work with on Sunday.

Safety Jalen Thompson is questionable to play with an ankle injury, but with no move to add a safety, Thompson seems likely to be able to play.

The Cardinals and Jets kick off Sunday afternoon at 4:25 p.m. ET or 2:25 p.m. Arizona time.

Former Packers kicker lands on Jets practice squad

Former Green Bay Packers kicker Anders Carlson signed with the practice squad of the New York Jets on Friday, marking another chapter in Carlson’s whirlwind NFL journey.

Former Green Bay Packers kicker Anders Carlson signed with the practice squad of the New York Jets on Friday, marking another new chapter in Carlson’s whirlwind NFL journey.

The Jets also released veteran kicker Riley Patterson from the 53-man roster, likely opening the door for Carlson to be the team’s kicker on Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals. Veteran kicker Greg Zuerlein is on injured reserve.

Carlson, a sixth-round pick of the Packers in 2023, spent two games with the San Francisco 49ers earlier this season. He made all five field goals (long of 55) and 3-of-4 extra points while with the 49ers.

The Packers released Carlson at final cuts in late August. He lost the kicker battle during the offseason and was replaced, at least initially, by Greg Joseph, but the Packers quickly changed directions and went with rookie Brayden Narveson to start the regular season. After five misses in six games, the Packers changed course again, releasing Narveson and signing veteran Brandon McManus, who has made 6-of-7 field goals (including two game-winners) and 6-of-6 extra points in three games.

As a rookie in 2023, Carlson made 27 of 33 field goals (81.8%) and 34 of 39 extra points (87.2%). He missed four field goals between 40-49 yards and two over 50 yards. During the postseason, Carlson missed a field goal in San Francisco and an extra point in Dallas — giving him 13 total misses in 19 total games.

In New York, Carlson will join quarterback Aaron Rodgers and receivers Davante Adams and Allen Lazard among the former Packers playing for the Jets in 2024.

Chargers vs. Bengals flexed into Sunday Night Football

The Chargers will have three primetime games in a span of four weeks.

The Chargers will be playing in primetime in Week 11.

The NFL announced that Los Angeles’ matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, Nov. 17, will now be Sunday Night Football on NBC. The game will kick off at 5:20 pm PT.

Originally, L.A. and Cincinnati were scheduled to play at 1:25 pm, with the game set to be televised on CBS. Now, it replaces the contest between the Jets and Colts.

With the Chargers slated for Sunday night, they will play three primetime games in four weeks, with the other two being against the Ravens (Monday night in Week 12) and the Chiefs (Sunday night in Week 14).

The last time the Bolts and Bengals met was in 2021. Los Angeles won, 41-22.

Bills could climb to second in AFC with win vs. Dolphins

Bills could climb to second in AFC with win vs. Dolphins

It’s typically bad for the Buffalo Bills when the divisional-foe New York Jets win a football game.

Thursday night in Week 9 is the exception.

With the Jets’ win over the Houston Texans in primetime, the Bills leapfrogged up past the Texans and currently sit in third place in the American Football Conference standings. The Texans dropped to fourth.

First place in the AFC belongs to the undefeated Kansas City Chiefs. For the Bills to catch up to them they would need a few weeks and some things to go in their favor.

Sitting between the Chiefs and Bills are the Pittsburgh Steelers in second place. Given that the Steelers have a bye this week, the Bills could overtake their spot at number two in the AFC by the end of the weekend.

All it would take is a win over the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.

With the Bills favored to win their home game against Miami, there’s a good chance they can move up to second in the conference by just Week 9 of the season. That’s not too shabby for a team that was supposed to be in a “rebuild year.”

Read our three keys for a Bills win on Sunday that would propel them up in the standings.

Shawne Merriman suggests Chargers should trade for Mike Williams

Shawne Merriman believes the Chargers should reunite with one of their former players.

The Chargers have reportedly shown interest in trading for Jets wide receiver Mike Williams, and Shawne Merriman, one of the team’s all-time best players, believes they should make the move to reunite with him.

“He’s that big-play guy you can count on,” Merriman said in an interview with Sports Casting’s Kyle Odegard. “And then you’ve got Ladd (McConkey) and (Joshua) Palmer that can make things happen underneath.”

Los Angeles cut ties with Williams this past offseason to clear up salary cap space. But bringing him back wouldn’t cost them much, as he is playing on a one-year contract with a $1.3 million base salary.

Early in the season, it looked like Williams would be a viable option for quarterback Aaron Rodgers. In the first four games, he caught ten passes for 145 yards. Since then, Williams has only amassed two receptions for 21 yards.

Merriman said that Williams’ lack of production with New York can be attributed to him still working his way back from the knee injury he suffered last season in Week 3.

“I think also that Mike Williams coming off an ACL is just getting healthy,” Merriman said. “I try to tell people all the time, just because you’re on the field doesn’t mean you’re 100 percent. Your body has to adjust to playing again. You’ve been off for a year, so it takes a little bit of time. So I think it’s right for the Chargers to bring him back and get him on the field.”

A reunion between Williams and the Chargers would make sense. Los Angeles doesn’t have someone to threaten the deep parts of the field. Even with D.J. Chark Jr. coming back, Williams and Justin Herbert had a good connection in that area of the field during their time together.

Across seven seasons with L.A., Williams posted 309 receptions for 4,806 yards and 31 touchdowns. He averaged 15.5 yards per catch.

Will Anderson Jr. injury update: Texans DE leaves during Jets game

Houston Texans defensive end Will Anderson Jr. suffered an ankle injury in the first half against the New York Jets.

The Houston Texans might be without their star defensive player for the remainder of Thursday’s game against New York Jets on Halloween. Hopefully, the injury won’t carry over to next Week’s showdown against the Detroit Lions.

Will Anderson Jr.’s night could be over depending on the severity of the injury suffered in the first quarter at MetLife Stadium.

Here’s what happened and his status.

Will Anderson Jr. injury update

Anderson, who was named the AFC Defensive Player of the Month earlier Thursday afternoon, was rolled up on during the first quarter on a run by Jets star Breece Hall. He was down on the ground after suffering an injury and needed help from the medical staff.

Anderson began to work drills after leaving the blue medical tent and got his left ankle taped up before returning to the field for several plays. He was limited during the second quarter, only seeing action on pass-rushing downs against Aaron Rodgers.

After halftime, the Amazon Prime Video broadcast announced that Anderson was questionable to return with an ankle injury.

Will Will Anderson Jr. return for Thursday Night Football?

The Texans have listed Anderson as questionable for the remainder of Thursday’s game. The former All-American was replaced by a rotation of Denico Autry and Derek Barnett, who should hold their own in place of the former No. 3 overall pick.

Before his injury, Anderson had a tackle for loss against Hall on the opening drive.

Will Anderson Jr. stats

One of the rising stars off the edge entering his second season, Anderson had totaled 7.5 sacks and 11 tackles for loss entering Thursday’s game. He currently leads the NFL in tackles for loss and ranks third in sacks, trailing only New York Jets second-year defensive end Will McDonald and New York Giants defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence.

Texans DE depth chart

With Anderson out with an injury, here’s the rest of the defensive ends on the active roster:

Watch: Denico Autry records first sack of season on primetime

Denico Autry finally recorded his first sack as a member of the Houston Texans on Thursday Night Football.

It only took eight games, but Denico Autry finally recorded his first sack with the Houston Texans.

On the New York Jets opening drive, Autry pulverized Aaron Rodgers on third-and-10 for a loss for six yards and an eventual punt deep in New York territory.

Autry, who was suspended back in July for the first six games due to a PED suspension, has played back-to-back games as a rotational option behind Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter.

The sack also marked the first tackle for Autry of the 2024 season. Houston’s

Houston’s offense has been quiet through three drives, meaning the defensive could be in line to win a one-dimensional game at MetLife Stadium.

AFC East roundup: What happened in the division in Week 8

AFC East roundup: What happened in the division in Week 8

The Buffalo Bills defeated the Seattle Seahawks in Week 8 by a score of 31-10. With the win, the Bills remain atop the AFC East with a record of 6-2.

Like Buffalo, the rest of the AFC East was in action. How did each fare last week, and how does the division stack up right now?

Here is a quick recap of what went down in Week 8 with the Miami Dolphins, New York Jets, and New England Patriots:

The good news for the Dolphins is that quarterback Tua Tagovailoa returned to action in Week 8. The bad news is that it wasn’t enough to fend off a streaky Arizona Cardinals team. The Dolphins lost a heartbreaker at home, 28-27.

Tagovailoa had been out since Week 2 when he suffered his latest concussion. He looked pretty good in his return and Miami looked like a competitive ball club again. They scored 27 points after they went the previous four games without scoring more than 15 points.

The Dolphins are now 2-5 on the year and have to travel to Buffalo in Week 9.

New York Jets

The Jets lost to the Patriots on the road in Week 8, 25-22. It’s been a rough stretch of football for the Jets. They have now lost five in a row after starting the year 2-1.

Trading for wide receiver Davante Adams and firing head coach Robert Saleh was New York’s best attempt at turning things around. It hasn’t worked yet. With the new faces, they’ve lost their last two.

The Jets are now 2-6 and are backed up to the ledge of their 2024 season. They need to go on a historic run to not fall off the cliff. They will host the 6-2 Houston Texans in Week 9.

New England Patriots

The Patriots had a great day at Gillette Stadium in Week 8. They beat the Jets on a rushing touchdown from Rhamondre Stevenson with just 22 seconds left.

Unfortunately, rookie quarterback Drake Maye was forced to leave the game due to a concussion. Veteran Jacoby Brissett took over early in the second quarter and led the offense to victory.

With the win, the Patriots improve to 2-6. Maye’s health will be something to monitor as he navigates through concussion protocol this week. His status is up in the air for Week 9 when the Patriots will head to Tennessee to face the 1-6 Titans.

AFC East roundup: What happened in the division in Week 7

The Buffalo Bills defeated the Tennessee Titans in Week 7 by a score of 34-10. With the win, the Bills remain atop the AFC East with a record of 5-2.

Like Buffalo, the rest of the AFC East was in action. How did each fare last week, and how does the division stack up right now?

Here is a quick recap of what went down in Week 7 with the Miami Dolphins, New York Jets, and New England Patriots:

Going into their Week 7 game against the Indianapolis Colts, the Dolphins were still without starting quarterback Tua Tgovailoa. To make matters worse, their backup QB was injured in the game.

Tyler Huntley left the game with a shoulder injury and was replaced by Tim Boyle. Neither QB was effective as Dolphins wide receivers only caught four total passes. The Dolphins lost 16-10 and dropped to 2-4 on the year.

New York Jets

The Jets made headlines last week after trading for WR Davante Adams. But, even rekindling the relationship between him and Aaron Rodgers couldn’t get the team on track.

The Jets lost 37-15 to the Pittsburgh Steelers on ‘Sunday Night Football’. Rodgers threw two interceptions and running back Breece Hall only averaged 3.1 yards per carry. The loss has the Jets sitting at a disappointing 2-5 record after many in the offseason predicted they would make a run at the division title.

New England Patriots

The Patriots had to travel to London in Week 7 to take on the Jacksonville Jaguars. They had a disappointing flight home after a 32-16 loss.

Their defense couldn’t make stops and their offensive line couldn’t protect their young QB Drake Maye. They allowed 32 points to the Jags who average 20 per game. The loss drops the Pats to 1-6 on the year.

Steelers injury updates: 2 key Steelers lost in win vs Jets

Donte Jackson and Montravius Adams were both injured in Sunday’s win.

After the Pittsburgh Steelers 37-15 win over the New York Jets, head coach Mike Tomlin addressed the media about the win and offered a brief update on the injuries that occurred. He noted several players had what Tomlin likes to call bumps and bruises associated with play and lost noted two more significant injuries.

Tomlin followed up on cornerback Donte Jackson and defensive tackle Montravius Adams. Tomlin said Jackson had a shoulder injury and was unable to return and Adams suffered a knee injury and missed the remainder of the game.

Jackson’s absence opened the door for James Pierre and the Jets took advantage of the mismatch. For Adams, the Jets made a strong effort to run the ball without the backup nose tackle in the rotation but the rest of the defense stepped up to fill in the gaps.

Tomlin will offer an update at his usual Tuesday press conference when the team begins preparations to take on the New York Giants.
