Twitter abuzz with Tennessee recruiting violation rumors

College football Twitter abuzz with Tennessee recruiting violation rumors after Volunteers fire Jeremy Pruitt & Phil Fulmer retires

College football Twitter is having a field day after the Tennessee Volunteers fired head coach Jeremy Pruitt for cause. Additionally, Tennessee athletic director Phillip Fulmer is likely going to step down and retire.

If some of the recruiting violation rumors are false, then it still doesn’t change the fact that Tennessee’s program has seen a level of decline on par with Florida State in recent seasons. The Volunteers did finish 8-5 in 2019 after a rocky start, but the program took a major step back in 2020 with a 3-7 season.

According to the Dan Patrick Show, Tennessee handed recruits money in McDonald’s bags during campus visits. This rumor gave Twitter some easy material to work with and of course college football fans came up with some funny reactions:

Tennessee wide receiver Jalin Hyatt denied the rumor via Twitter.

I’m Lovin’ It! Twitter jokes about Tennessee using McDonald’s bags to pay recruits

Tennessee allegedly used McDonald’s bags to fill with cash to hand to recruits in violations that ended the Jeremy Pruitt era in Knoxville.

This is almost too good to be true.

Per Dan Patrick, Tennessee coaches were using bags from McDonald’s to fill with cash and hand off to recruits during visits in hopes that the player would sign with the Volunteers.

It is just a part of the investigation that ended with the firing of Jeremy Pruitt and more than a handful of assistants on Monday.

As usual, Twitter was all over the McDonald’s news with some major jokes.

Dan Patrick: Tennessee ‘put the cash in McDonald’s bags and handed it to the recruits’

Tennessee used the Golden Arches to help pay off recruits reports Dan Patrick.

Tennessee took McDonald’s old slogan of “We Do It All For You” literal for potential recruits, it seems.

On Tuesday during his talk show, Dan Patrick talked about how Tennessee coaches handed McDonald’s bags full of cash during visits to recruits.

“You literally had bag men,” Patrick said. “They put the cash in McDonald’s bags and handed it to the recruits. My source said they were so in your face with this—they weren’t even trying to hide it. And that’s where my source said: ‘Tennessee got sloppy. Georgia has gotten sloppy.’ But there’s been no word on the NCAA looking at Georgia. But Tennessee, they got sloppy, and they were handing out cash in McDonald’s bags.”

There’s so much in this quote that it is mind-blowing that the Volunteers could be so dumb. Yet, we are here to entertain so let’s have a fun poll and vote on which McDonald’s slogan of the past fits this scenario the best. Alright? Alright!

Tennessee fans react to possibility of Kevin Steele becoming head coach

Twitter was all over the news that Kevin Steele is now the new interim head coach at Tennessee

Stop me if you think that you’ve heard this one before: the head coach of a football program is fired and Kevin Steele is named interim head coach.  Déjà vu? No, just another day in the SEC.

It was only 17 days ago that we saw Kevin Steele act as interim head coach for Auburn as the Tigers took on Northwestern in the Citrus Bowl. Steele was not retained to Bryan Harsin’s staff (no surprises there) and returned home to his alma mater of Tennessee to take on the role of defensive coordinator.

Just days later head coach Jeremy Pruitt and AD Phillip Fulmer are ousted. Pruitt was fired with cause by the university Monday morning after an internal investigation resulted in the discovery of several major recruiting infractions. Fulmer announced this morning that he is stepping down as athletic director. His retirement is not directly related to the investigation of Pruitt, he just doesn’t want to be the fall-guy in this situation and I get it.

Let’s get back to the details here. Guess who was waiting in the wings to receive the nomination of interim head coach? YES, Kevin (insert middle name here) Steele! Many Volunteer fans have been paying close attention to what Auburn fans have had to say about the possibility of this man becoming a head coach, and well, there’s a mixed bag of responses here. Check them out:

I have no idea where Tennessee goes from this, honestly. In addition to firing Pruitt they also fired nine other football employees for violations. The good news is that Tennessee will have a lot of latitude in finding a new coaching staff with no buyouts attached. The bad news is that they’ll also need to locate a new athletic director and a wrecking crew, I mean football staff, that can clean this mess up.

Report: Tennessee fires head coach Jeremy Pruitt, AD Phillip Fulmer to retire

Tennessee has fired head coach Jeremey Pruitt with cause. Details here

The University of Tennessee has fired head coach Jeremey Pruitt with cause per multiple reports from sources close to the program, confirmed by the Knoxville News Sentinel.

The firing comes in the midst of an NCAA investigation into the Volunteers football program, which allowed Tennessee to fire Pruitt for cause and frees the University from a $12.8 million buyout.

Pruitt, former Florida State, Alabama and Georgia defensive coordinator (2014-2015), exits Knoxville with a 16-19 record over three seasons after taking the job after former Volunteers coach Butch Jones was let go in 2017.

Tennessee athletic director and former head football coach Phillip Fulmer is also on his way out.

Pruitt was a combined 0-9 versus Alabama, Florida and Georgia and offensively, the Volunteers were consistently among the worst in the SEC.

Pruitt’s last game at Tennessee was a 34-13 home loss to No. 5 Texas A&M.
