MSU basketball tops Madrid All-Stars to open three-game Spain trip

Michigan State basketball opened its trip to Spain with a thrilling victory over the Madrid All-Stars on Thursday

Michigan State basketball opened its trip to Spain with a thrilling victory over the Madrid All-Stars.

The Spartans led most of the game but needed strong play from point guard Jeremy Fears Jr. in the final minutes to hold off a comeback attempt by the Madrid All-Stars. The final score was 94-87.

Michigan State led most of the first half, thanks to strong play from Xavier Booker. He hit several 3-point shots to lead the Spartans offensively in the opening frame, helping Michigan State hold a 49-40 advantage at the break.

The Madrid All-Stars responded in the third quarter, outscoring the Spartans by double-digits in the frame to take a 69-67 lead into the final quarter.

Michigan State didn’t let the Madrid All-Stars lead last for long in the fourth quarter. The Spartans quickly regained the lead and held on late for the victory.

Official stats from the game have not yet been released. Spartans Wire will update this post should any stats be provided.

Michigan State will play two more exhibition games in Spain over the next week. Next up is a matchup in Valencia on Sunday.

Watch MSU point guard Jeremy Fears Jr. discuss his injury recovery and the Spartans’ upcoming trip to Spain

Michigan State basketball will be getting back one of its key players for its upcoming trip to Spain.

Point guard Jeremy Fears Jr. is expected to make his long awaited return from injury during the Spartans’ three-game exhibition trip to Spain. Fears is a former McDonald’s All-American who suffered a season-ending injury last December from a gunshot wound.

Fears caught up with the media on Monday to discuss his injury recovery and the Spartans’ upcoming trip to Spain:

One Spartan listed among ‘preseason top 30 sophomores’ in college basketball list

Can you name which former McDonald’s All-American on the Spartans’ roster made the list?

One Michigan State player has been included in a preseason list of top sophomores entering the 2024-25 season. Can you name which former McDonald’s All-American it is?

Jeremy Fears Jr. was listed as the No. 19 player among best sophomores entering the 2024-25 college basketball season. He was the only Spartan to make the list, with many (including myself) wondering how fellow former McDonald’s All-American Xavier Booker wasn’t included.

Fears missed most of last season after experiencing an injury due to a gunshot while back home over the holidays. He is expected to be back to full strength by the beginning of the season and will battle with Tre Holloman for the starting point guard spot on the Spartans.

According to Justin Thind of 247Sports, Jeremy Fears Jr. is set to receive a medical redshirt for the 2023-24 season. Fears will have four years of eligibility still remaining after the redshirt.

Fears only played in 12 games last year after he suffered a gunshot wound in his home state of Illinois.

Look at Jeremy Fears getting back in the gym, looking healthy

Jeremy Fears is starting to look like his old self again:

Michigan State basketball took a major hit in 2023-24 when reserve 5-star point guard Jeremy Fears Jr. was sidelined due to a shooting incident in his hometown on Christmas break. The injury prevented Fears from playing the closing months of the season.

Now, heading into the future, Tom Izzo hasn’t been shy that he is ready to give the keys to the program to Fears, although this will only work if Fears gets healthy and back to his normal self.

That doesn’t look to be a concern thus far, though, as Fears is back in the gym and showing off the progress he has made.
