Notre Dame vs. Duke: Third-Quarter Analysis

Little by little, we’re seeing glimpses of how Notre Dame is expected to play this season.

Little by little, we’re seeing glimpses of how Notre Dame is expected to play this season. It may not be pretty, but the Irish are getting the job done. They lead Duke, 17-13, after three quarters.

The Blue Devils’ first possession of the second half was cut short when Jalon Calhoun, their leading receiver from last year, fumbled a reception and saw Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah make the recovery. However, it wasn’t all good for the Irish as Kyle Hamilton limped off the field and has yet to return. Gotta give something to get something, I suppose.

Out of a timeout and with eight minutes left in the quarter, Kyren Williams took the ball on a fourth-and-1 and ran it 26 yards for his second touchdown of the game. So far, this kid looks to be worth the hype. Of course, he got a little help on a nice block from Javon McKinley.

It turned out the Irish needed that 17-6 lead because the Blue Devils aren’t going away. After the Irish went three-and-out deep in their own territory, Chase Brice took advantage of a short field and made a couple of nice passes to lead a touchdown drive. He finished it off himself by running in from 2 yards out.

A change in philosophy has the Irish close to elite football status

When Brian Kelly suffered his worst season as Notre Dame head coach, he made changes immediately. They have really paid off

As the Irish step into their first, and most likely only, ACC conference season, there are plenty of questions along the way as to how Notre Dame will fare. Chip Patterson of CBS Sports tried to tackle how Brian Kelly will guide the Irish through this odd season.

Before Patterson got in-depth on how the Irish would do in conference play, still weird to say that, he looked at how they got to this point. Patterson singled out Kelly’s change in player development and recruiting since going 4-8 in 2016. The head coach addressed those issues and “the results were immediate, with Notre Dame going 33-5 over the last three seasons with three top-12 poll finishes and an appearance in the 2018 College Football Playoff.”

You can say that Kelly has really excelled with the change, not hoping the players improve, but instead putting an emphasis on drastic improvements. Patterson singled out linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah and Kyren Williams as two players who have benefitted from new priorities. This led Patterson to come to the conclusion that “Notre Dame is uniquely built to overcome whatever obstacles are ahead in the 2020 season.”

That main obstacle being the Clemson Tigers, who pretty much own the ACC right now. Patterson knows that as “Clemson is still the odds-on favorite to win the league, but Notre Dame is too strong to think we can pencil in those two matchups as ‘win, win’ for the Tigers.”

ESPN names Top 25 ACC football players, how many Irish stars made it?

Ahead of the ACC season kicking off tonight, ESPN ranked their Top 25 players in the conference. Find out how many Notre Dame stars made it.

Two more days, just two more days until the wait is over and Notre Dame Football is back in our lives. As we look towards the future of the one-off ACC season, ESPN has ranked the Top 25 players inside the conference.

You might think that due to an overwhelming amount of analysts picking the Irish to finish second in conference play behind Clemson that this list would be littered with Notre Dame players. Well, unfortunately that isn’t the case. Just two Irish stars made the list, safety Kyle Hamilton and linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah.

Hamilton was ranked just one spot ahead of JOK, checking in at 10th on their list. Andrea Adelson and David M. Hale comprised the list, and were very complimentary of the sophomore star. “ACC QBs would be wise not to pick on Hamilton during Notre Dame’s brief foray into the league.” After taking away four passes in part-time work last year, Hamilton should become a national name after this season. Don’t be surprised to see him become an early entry player after his junior campaign.

Right after Hamilton was JOK, ranked as the 11th best player in the ACC. They called Owusu-Koramah a “dominant force at linebacker” which seems to be true. Adelson and Hale brought to attention JOK’s success at getting to the quarterback, “he got pressure 22.2% of the time — best on the team.” Expect defensive coordinator Clark Lea to unleash JOK in his final year on campus.

Although it was disappointing not to have more Irish stars on ESPN’s list, the team should still be competitive in every game it plays this year. This just add fuel to their fire, and Notre Dame has plenty to play for this season.

Notre Dame Football: Pair of Irish named to CFN’s Top 50 list

A pair of Notre Dame players showed up on the CFN Top 50 players list entering 2020. Who didn’t make the cut that’s the surprise, though.

We’re just 13 days until Notre Dame kicks off against Duke and the 2020 college football season gets underway for Fighting Irish fans.

As we’ve gone over the rankings of best teams each time we can find one, we haven’t done much on the actual best players outside of Notre Dame.

College Football News did that recently, naming the 50 best players in college football entering the 2020 season.  In order to make their list you have to be on a team that is scheduled to play this fall, not in the winter or spring.

With that in mind, know that two Notre Dame players made the list but they probably aren’t the two you’re guessing.

If you’re like me your first thought is probably “OK, its Kyle Hamilton easily and did they go with Koramoah or Eichenberg as the second?”

Well, about that.

They didn’t actually go with Hamilton in the top 50, instead ranking offensive tackle Liam Eichenberg as the 11th best player and linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah as the 34th best player.

Here’s what they said about both.  First up, 11th ranked Eichenberg:

Notre Dame Football: Irish all over PFF’s Preseason All-ACC Team

What is particularly interesting to me here is that by simply counting, Notre Dame has three more members on the First Team than Clemson, with only Trevor Lawrence and Travis Etienne receiving that honor for the Tigers.

This is weird to write.

Looking at Pro Football Focus’s Preseason All-ACC Team and seeing Notre Dame players listed is strange.  I’m used to seeing Notre Dame listed as an independent and not really looking much at it.

But it’s 2020 and Notre Dame is playing in the ACC as a full-time member this season.  The Irish are all over the list with five players earning First Team status, a pair more making the Second Team, three more being named to the Third Team and one player earning an Honorable Mention.

Notre Dame’s First Team Selections:

OT – Liam Eichenberg
Eichenberg already earned the 18th-best pass-blocking grade among FBS tackles over the entire season, but his grade from Week 7 on actually cracked the top-10 (7th).

C – Jarrett Patterson
Patterson finished as the 19th most valuable player in the FBS at the position and produced an above-average pass-blocking grade on his true pass sets.

OG – Aaron Banks
He allowed zero pressures in seven of his 13 games and dominated against Power 5 competition. He actually produced an 85.6 pass-blocking grade in those matchups, third in the country among those with at least 175 such snaps.

LB – Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah
From Week 10 on, Micah Parsons and Isaiah Simmons were the only Power 5 linebackers who earned a higher PFF grade.

S – Kyle Hamilton
The 6-foot-4 safety allowed only seven catches on 23 targets in coverage while making four interceptions and breaking up another five passes en route to a 1.3 passer rating allowed.

Notre Dame’s Second Team Selections:
OG – Tommy Kraemer
K – Jonathan Doerer

Notre Dame’s Third Team Selections:
OT – Robert Hainsey
Edge – Ade Ogundeji
LB – Drew White

Notre Dame’s lone Honorable Mention:
QB – Ian Book

What is particularly interesting to me here is that by simply counting, Notre Dame has three more members on the First Team than Clemson, with only Trevor Lawrence and Travis Etienne receiving that honor for the Tigers.

Clemson had four players on the Second Team, six on the Third Team and one player receive honorable mention.

Notre Dame actually has more players combined on the first and second teams than Clemson does but the Tigers have 13 players mentioned in total to Notre Dame’s 11.

Irish have two stars honored as preseason All-Americans by CBS Sports

One Notre Dame star on the first team, one on the second team while a snub happens and head coach Brian Kelly gets some love as well.

The preseason accolades will be changing significantly with the absence of the Big Ten and Pac-12, but no Notre Dame player who gets nominated will care much about that. Today, 247Sports and CBS Sports, in conjunction announced their 2020 preseason All-American teams.

There was only one Fighting Irish star to make the first team, offensive tackle Liam Eichenberg. The presumed leader of the offensive line should complete his Notre Dame career with plenty of pancakes. He will literally have quarterback Ian Book’s back for the season. Linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah made the second team, but safety Kyle Hamilton was omitted from the list. I think the experts overlooked the rising sophomore star as he was named to the USA Today preseason All-American second team yesterday.

It shouldn’t be ignored that head coach Brian Kelly garnered votes for coach of the year, even if another ACC coach was selected, Clemson’s Dabo Swinney. Notre Dame should be able to navigate through their ACC schedule fairly easily, with the game against the Tigers in South Bend as the contest everyone has circled on their calendars. Kelly last took home coach of the year honors during the 2018 campaign, which he led the Irish to an undefeated regular season and berth into the College Football Playoffs.

These are big honors for Eichenberg and Owusu-Koramoah, as the culmination of their collegiate careers will hopefully be very fruitful. Also, keep an eye out for Kelly and Hamilton, they could potentially be in line for some postseason recognition.

Two Irish Defender’s Makes Feldman’s Freaks List

There were two Notre Dame Football stars that made The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman’s Freaks List.

There are many traits that make up a good football player, with some of them standing out like a sore thumb. Bruce Feldman of The Athletic has come up with his Freaks List for the 2020 season and there were two members of the Notre Dame Football team honored (subscription needed).

Sophomore safety Kyle Hamilton impressed Feldman enough to rank 9th on his list, with his freakiest attribute being his vertical leap. What is interesting is that Feldman found out that “Hamilton is up 20 pounds since last year to 221.” That is a huge safety, who according to Feldman, his top speed last year was almost 21 MPH. Think about that, a human running 20 miles an hour. Go get in your car and get up to 20 MPH, stick your head out the window. That’s damn fast.

Back to his freakiest trait, Hamilton’s vertical which is 42.3 inches, that’s over 3-and-a-half feet! Compare that to the best of the 2020 NFL Combine, Hamilton would have been second among everyone according to Pro Football Reference’s combine results. Michigan’s Donovan Peoples-Jones led everyone with a vertical leap of 44.5 inches, but Hamilton would have led the secondary as Louisiana Tech’s L’Jarius Sneed led there with a 41-inch vertical. The rising star was named to the Bednarik Award watch list but got snubbed for the Thorpe Award (the best defensive back), something that I believe they will regret by the end of the season.

The other Irish star that was on Feldman’s list was linebacker Jeremiah Osuwu-Koramoah and this shouldn’t come as a surprise either. What stood out to Feldham was JOK’s explosiveness, which has been something the linebacker has worked very hard for. JOK finally cracked the lineup last year and make a huge splash, leading the team in tackles while notching 5.5 sacks. Those traits helped JOK get into the backfield and wreak havoc on opposing offenses.

You wouldn’t expect a linebacker to have the testing numbers that JOK has, registering a “39-inch vertical jump, 10-3 broad jump and an equally impressive 20.4 MPH on his GPS. Owusu-Koramoah also notched 42 pull-ups in off-season training and back squatted 555 pounds.” The last number stands out the most, as squats show power and 555 pounds is no joke.

It’s nice to see both of them making Feldman’s list, as the hype continues to build for both of these Irish star defenders. Both Hamilton and Owusu-Koramoah use their abilities and have translated them into big time production on the field. It will be a joy to watch both of them get after offenses this coming season.

Owusu-Koarmoah, White on Watch List for Bronco Nagurski Trophy

Hopes are high for Notre Dame’s defense in 2020, especially in the case of the linebacker corps.

Hopes are high for Notre Dame’s defense in 2020, especially in the case of the linebacker corps. Irish seniors Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah and Drew White have been named to this year’s Bronco Nagurski Trophy Watch List. The award goes to college football’s top defensive player.

Owusu-Koramoah and White tied for the team lead in tackles last season (80), and both played in every game. Owusu-Koramoah had three nine-tackle games and was named to the ESPN All-Bowl Team after recording three sacks in the Camping World Bowl. He led the Irish with 13.5 tackles for loss in 2019.

White’s 11 tackles against Michigan were a Notre Dame high for last season. He also recorded 10 tackles apiece vs. Boston College and Navy. He finished 2019 with eight tackles for loss.

The watch list for the award can change throughout the season. In the end, five finalists will compete for the right to be named the National Defensive Player of the Year. The winner will be voted on by the FWAA All-America Committee.

Monday’s have been kind to Notre Dame Linebacker Owusu-Koramoah

Another Monday, another watch list that Irish linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah appears in.

For the second Monday in a row, Irish linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, JOK, has been placed into elite company making another watch list. This time it is the Butkus Award, which is given to the nation’s best linebacker. This honor is on the heels of last Monday when JOK was put on the Chuck Bednarik Award watch list as well.

Owusu-Koramoah has a lot to play for in his senior year, as we previewed him here last week, which  includes a potential selection in the first round of the NFL Draft. There is a ton of hype surrounding JOK and if he wins the Butkus, he would become the 3rd Irish linebacker to achieve that status following Jaylon Smith in 2015 and Manti Te’o in 2012. Smith’s season had him finish with 114 tackles and a sack while Te’o has 111 tackles and 1.5 sacks.

The competition will be tough for JOK to take home this award in the 2020 season as Penn State’s Micah Parsons, Alabama’s Dylan Moses and others have gotten significant pre-season hype as well. If JOK can up his tackle numbers from 79 to over 100 and keep the 8.5 sacks or even improve on those number, we can very well see Owusu-Koramoah being named the best linebacker in college this coming season.

Notre Dame Player Preview: Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, LB

Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah might be the best defender on Notre Dame’s roster entering 2020. Find out more about the star linebacker right here

Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly said recently that it wasn’t a matter of if college football would be played this year but when.  In those regards we’ll continue to bring you player previews for Notre Dame’s entire team in 2020.

Next up is linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah who some have pegged as a fringe first round draft pick in 2021.

What’s in store for “JOK” in what very likely will be his final season in South Bend, though?

That’s exactly what we’re here for.
