Packers sign former Browns edge rusher to practice squad

The Packers signed former Browns edge rusher Jeremiah Martin to the team’s practice squad.

The Green Bay Packers signed edge rusher Jeremiah Martin to the team’s practice squad on Wednesday.

Martin (6-3, 265) went undrafted out of Washington in 2023. He spent training camp with the Cleveland Browns during each of the last two seasons and was also with the New York Giants between January and May of this year.

Over three preseason games with the Browns in 2024, Martin produced two pressures (including a sack) and three stops while playing 58 snaps. He also missed two tackles and had a penalty.

During his final collegiate season at Washington, Martin produced 8.5 sacks, 11 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles and a pass breakup over 13 games. He spent his first three seasons at Texas A&M before transferring to Washinton for the 2021 and 2022 seasons.

While he ran a 4.9-second 40-yard dash coming out of college, Martin did post a 35.5″ vertical leap and 9-11 broad jump while finishing the three-cone drill in 7.09 seconds — all good numbers for a player his size.

Martin joins Deslin Alexandre as the only edge rushers on the Packers’ practice squad.

The Packers must have lost a player from the practice squad on Wednesday to open up a spot for Martin. On Monday, the Packers signed veteran offensive lineman Michael Jordan to the practice squad and released offensive tackle Spencer Rolland.

Browns waive LB Caleb Johnson and sign DE Jeremiah Martin on Wednesday

More moves for the Browns to start camp

Earlier in the day Wednesday, the Cleveland Browns announced that several players were heading onto the PUP and NFI list as the players gathered in Berea for the start of training camp. Now, the team has waived linebacker Caleb Johnson and signed defensive end Jeremiah Martin.

The team originally signed linebacker Caleb Johnson to a futures deal in January of this year. Johnson was undrafted in the 2023 NFL draft before he signed with the New York Jets as a UDFA. Last year, he spent time with the Jets, Steelers, and Cardinals on each club’s respective practice squads.

Defensive end Jeremiah Martin will begin his second stint with the team after he went undrafted last year and the Browns signed him as a UDFA. Martin spent some of last year with the New York Giants on their practice squad.

Just a couple of roster moves at the bottom of the roster as the team gets ready to head to West Virginia to begin camp.

Giants release LB Jeremiah Martin

The New York Giants have officially signed DL Elijah Chatman and released LB Jeremiah Martin, plus other roster notes.

The New York Giants have released linebacker Jeremiah Martin in effort to make room for defensive lineman Elijah Chatman, who was signed after a successful tryout during rookie minicamp.

Martin, who went undrafted out of Washington in 2023, originally signed with the Cleveland Browns but was waived as a part of final cuts. He was signed to the Giants’ practice squad on January 1, 2024 and later to a reserve/futures deal following the conclusion of the regular season.

The 24-year-old Martin was not elevated for the team’s Week 18 game against the Philadelphia Eagles and has not appeared in a regular season NFL game.

Meanwhile, running back Deon Jackson, who was waived with an injury designation last week, has reverted to injured reserve (IR).

Following the transactions, the Giants have 87 players signed to their 90-man roster with four members of their 2024 NFL draft still unsigned (Tyler Nubin, Andru Phillips, Theo Johnson, and Darius Muasau). They also have a roster exemption for kicker Jude McAtamney, allowing them to carry a total of 91 players.

New York Giants: 2024 reserve/futures contract scorecard

The New York Giants have begun signing players to reserve/futures contracts, so use the Giants Wire tracker to stay up to date.

The New York Giants are now officially in offseason mode and that means it’s time to begin signing players to reserve/futures contracts.

General manager Joe Schoen wasted no time and following exit interviews on Monday morning, began making his first personnel moves of the new year.

A reserve/futures contract (also known as a “futures contract”) gives the Giants (or any other NFL team) the rights to a certain player who did end the previous season on a 53-man roster. It includes practice squad players, free agents, and street free agents.

Reserve/futures contracts are often, but not always, for the minimum and are non-guaranteed.

Giants sign LB Jeremiah Martin to practice squad

The New York Giants have signed rookie linebacker Jeremiah Martin, who went undrafted last April, to their practice squad.

The New York Giants will close out the regular season on Sunday afternoon against the Philadelphia Eagles, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a little roster tinkering left to be done.

On Monday, the Giants signed rookie linebacker Jeremiah Martin to their practice squad.

The 24-year-old Martin was signed by the Cleveland Browns after going undrafted out of Washington last April. However, he was waived as a part of final cuts and remained unsigned until general manager Joe Schoen picked him up off the street.

Martin was named First-team All-Pac-12 in 2022 after recording 41 tackles (21 solo, 11 for a loss), two forced fumbles, one pass defensed and 8.5 sacks. It was a career season for the 6-foot-3, 265-pounder, who saw little action at Texas A&M prior to his transfer.

Ironically, CBS Sports gave Martin a pro comp of current Giants linebacker Boogie Bashman ahead of the 2023 NFL draft.

Jeremiah Martin is a big, thick, fluidly athletic edge rusher. He’s lacking bend but otherwise very impressive athlete relative to his size. He’s a polished pass rusher who wins with a variety of moves. Some speed-to-power conversion, and he counters awesomely. He flashed a nice spin move. He’s a solid run defender, sets a sturdy edge and will chase from the backside. He’s not easily moved in the run game because of his mass and energy. Bend is an issue. He utilizes length to keep blockers off his frame. You rarely see him on the ground because of how well-built he is. He’s a ready-to-go three-down EDGE with a refined game as a pass-rusher.

Now the two are teammates… For at least one week.

PFF’s 10 highest-graded defenders in Pro Football Hall of Fame Game

There was plenty to like from the defense on Thursday

The return of football didn’t bring any starters with it but there was still plenty to like for the Cleveland Browns during Thursday’s Pro Football Hall of Fame Game victory over the New York Jets. The Browns had several players flashing during the game including linebacker Tony Fields II who was flying all over the field. Edge Alex Wright looked faster off the line of scrimmage and made several nice plays against the run.

But according to PFF, some of the best play came from the defensive backs including rookie fifth-round pick Cameron Mitchell. Let’s take a look at the 10 highest-graded Browns defenders according to PFF from the victory over the Jets.

Nets carrying chip on their shoulders after ‘everybody was laughing at us’

The Brooklyn Nets are playing with some attitude in the Disney bubble, and their record has shown as much.

Things got a little tense toward the end of Tuesday’s game between the Brooklyn Nets and Orlando Magic after Wes Iwundu fouled Jeremiah late, stared down the rookie and appeared to have a few words. That prompted Justin Anderson to step in to defend his Nets teammate.

Anderson was also there when Iwundu started chirping again as the final buzzer sounded. Now, the rest of the Magic didn’t seem interested in getting in a fight with Brooklyn, but that may have been the result of how firmly Anderson barked back at Iwundu.

And Anderson’s reaction shouldn’t come as a surprise for Nets fans, for no other reason that he and his Brooklyn teammates have shown in the Disney bubble they’re not taking guff from anyone. Whether it’s Anderson v. Iwundu, Donta Hall v. Giannis Antetokounmpo or just the Nets’ overall play against teams like the Milwaukee Bucks and Los Angeles Clippers, they’re tired of people thinking so little of them.

“Everybody was laughing at us saying the Nets were going to look like this and seeing things all over the internet saying we weren’t going to do this,” Jeremiah Martin said on Tuesday, per Brian Lewis of the New York Post. “So we just take that every day, every practice, keeping that chip on our shoulder, proving everybody wrong and showing everybody who we are.”

The question now becomes: how much can that chip do for the Nets against the Toronto Raptors in the first round of the 2020 NBA Playoffs?

Jeremiah Martin among Nets to set a career-high vs. Magic

Dzanan Musa and Chris Chiozza both set career-highs in the Nets’ win over the Orlando Magic, and Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot tied one of his.

With Caris LeVert, Joe Harris, Jarrett Allen, Garrett Temple and Jamal Crawford all unavailable for the Brooklyn Nets on Tuesday, Jacque Vaughn needed players who don’t normally receive a ton of minutes to step up against the Magic — and they did.

Not only did Brooklyn win 108-96, but multiple Nets also set career highs in their win over the Magic, which also happened to be their only win over Orlando in four tries this season.

Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot was the first to set a career-high in the win. He scored 17 of his 24 points in the first quarter. That’s the most he’s ever scored in the opening quarter of a game, and he tied his career-high for points in any quarter (he also scored 17 in the fourth quarter against the Magic on July 31.)

Jeremiah Martin tied Luwawu-Cabarrot’s overall output, finishing with 24 points, as well. With that, the rookie set a new NBA career-high in points, breaking the personal record he set against the Celtics on August 5 (20 points).

Dzanan Musa set two career-highs in the win with his 17 points and six assists. His previous career-high in points (14) came against the Dallas Mavericks in January of 2019 — this is also the first time Musa has cracked double-digits this season. Musa’s previous career-high in assists (five) came in November of 2018 against the Chicago Bulls.

Chris Chiozza also set a record for steals in a game with four. He’d previously logged two steals in a single contest on four separate occasions.

Nets finally get best of Magic; Chris Chiozza exits early with injury

Jeremiah Martin and Dzanan Musa both had big days in the Brooklyn Nets’ win over the Orlando Magic.

Once again, the Brooklyn Nets were without Caris LeVert, Joe Harris and Jarrett Allen — along with Garrett Temple and Jamal Crawford, on top of the other vital pieces not with the team in the Disney bubble — and, once again, Jacque Vaughn and company pulled off a win against an Eastern Conference playoff team.

After losing to the Orlando Magic in their first three 2019-20 meetings, the Nets finally got the better of the East’s No. 8 seed on Tuesday, earning their fourth Disney bubble win, 108-96.

Timothe Luwawu-Carbarrot was once again the team leader in scoring with 24 points, tying Jeremiah Martin’s output as the rookie logged the second 20-point game of his NBA career.

Dzanan Musa (17 points), Tyler Johnson (14), Lance Thomas (12) and Donta Hall (10) each finished in double figures, as well. Musa also had six boards and six assists.

Chris Chiozza was a pest on defense, finishing with four steals before leaving the game due to right adductor tightness.

The Nets are back in action on Thursday at 9 p.m. against the Portland Trail Blazers.

Nets’ Disney bubble roster finalized

Jeremiah Martin and Chris Chiozza will get another chance to prove themselves for the Brooklyn Nets in the Disney bubble.

The Brooklyn Nets roster has gone through more changes than any other NBA team taking part in the league’s restart in Disney World.

Kevin Durant (right Achilles) was the first to rule himself out for the resumption of the 2019-20 season, while Kyrie Irving (right shoulder) is continuing to rehab from surgery which ended his first season in Brooklyn early.

Then Nic Claxton (left shoulder) underwent surgery, and Wilson Chandler elected to opt-out. DeAndre Jordan also opted-out after testing positive for COVID-19. It took Spencer Dinwiddie two positive COVID-19 tests for him to opt-out.

And just when it seemed like Taurean Prince (tested positive for COVID-19) would be the last Net sidelined for the restart, Michael Beasley left the bubble after testing positive for COVID-19.

After all the mishaps, the Nets roster is finally set for the Disney bubble, along with all the other 21 NBA teams taking part in the restart.

Brooklyn’s bubble roster goes as follows (alphabetically):

  • Jarrett Allen
  • Justin Anderson
  • Chris Chiozza
  • Jamal Crawford
  • Donta Hall
  • Joe Harris
  • Tyler Johnson
  • Rodions Kurucs
  • Caris LeVert
  • Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot
  • Jeremiah Martin
  • Dzanan Musa
  • Garrett Temple
  • Lance Thomas
