Sooners have talented pass catchers, but tight end Brayden Willis is a star in the making

With Jeremiah Hall and Austin Stogner in new locales, Oklahoma’s Brayden Willis looks like a player ready to breakout in 2022.

In recent years, the Oklahoma Sooners have had some talented weapons at the tight end and H-back positions. [autotag]Mark Andrews[/autotag], [autotag]Grant Calcaterra[/autotag], [autotag]Jeremiah Hall[/autotag], and [autotag]Austin Stogner[/autotag] were integral parts of the Oklahoma Sooners offense. Last season, the Sooners boasted three players at TE/H-back that we’re key contributors.

In addition to Hall and Stogner, tight end [autotag]Brayden Willis[/autotag] played an important role. His blocking early in the season had him amongst the best at the position for several weeks according to Pro Football Focus. Though not used that much as a receiver, Willis made plays when called upon, and in 2022, he’ll be called upon even more.

Jeremiah Hall’s off to the New York Giants and Austin Stogner joined his buddy Spencer Rattler with the South Carolina Gamecocks, leaving Willis with a huge opportunity to have a breakout season in 2022.

The Sooners added Daniel Parker Jr. in the transfer portal and talented freshmen Jason  Llewelyn and Kaden Helms in the 2022 recruiting class, but Willis looks like the presumptive starter and the player that will see the biggest jump in production.

Though he only had 15 receptions for 177 yards and two touchdowns, it’s plays like this one against Oklahoma State that reveal the potential for a promising season for the senior tight end.

And this one:

As the tight end position has evolved, players like Willis have become a rarity in college football. A player who is equally adept as a blocker and pass catcher. Even in limited opportunities, Willis has shown he can perform every aspect of the position at a high level. And with Marvin Mims and Theo Wease garnering attention on the outside, there will be room to operate in the middle of the field for Brayden Willis.

2022 is the year we see Brayden Willis take the next step and become a weapon for the Oklahoma Sooners.

Giants officially sign 13 undrafted rookie free agents

The New York Giants have officially signed 13 undrafted rookie free agents ahead of their three-day minicamp.

The New York Giants will hold their three-day rookie minicamp beginning on Friday and that meant the arrival of many players on Thursday. It also meant the time had come to officially sign some contracts.

Following the NFL’s schedule release, the Giants officially announced the signing of 13 undrafted rookie free agents — many of whom we had been made aware of previously.

The 13 signees were as follows:

  • TE Austin Allen
  • DB Yusuf Corker
  • DT Jabari Ellis
  • DB Darren Evans
  • DB Zyon Gilbert
  • FB Jeremiah Hall
  • DT Christopher Hinton
  • TE Andre Miller
  • G Josh Rivas
  • DB Trenton Thompson
  • DT Antonio Valentino
  • RB Jashaun Corbin
  • EDGE Tomon Fox

In addition to those 13 players, the Giants have invited a slew of others for tryouts. And while those names have not yet been released, it’s expected that several NFL veterans will also be trying out for a spot on the 90-man roster.

Sooners to the NFL: Where did Oklahoma’s draft prospects end up after the 2022 NFL draft?

Where did each Oklahoma Sooners draft prospect end up after the 2022 NFL draft weekend?

The Oklahoma Sooners had seven players taken in the 2022 NFL draft. That was tied with Alabama for fifth-most draft picks in this year’s draft. Georgia led the way with 15 picks while the SEC continued its dominance of sending players to the draft. They had 17 more draft selections than the Big 10 and 40 more players picked than the Big 12.

The Sooners didn’t hear a name called in the first round, which wasn’t surprising based on the way the players were ranked or being selected in mock drafts leading up to this weekend.

It was a long wait but finally, with the last pick of the second round, Nik Bonitto came off the board to the Denver Broncos. That last pick of the second round also happens to be the same pick in which the Kansas City Chiefs selected Creed Humphrey the year before. Will Bonitto have a similar impact in his rookie season?

In total, 11 of the 12 Oklahoma Sooners prospects have found new teams. Seven draft picks and four as undrafted free agents. The only one left without a new home at the moment is Gabe Brkic. An NFL team will likely bring him in for a tryout in the next few weeks or during training camp to compete for a kicking job.

Let’s look at where each Sooner will be making their new home.

Where Oklahoma Sooners prospects rank heading into Day 3 of the 2022 NFL draft

After Nik Bonitto and Brian Asamoah were taken on Day 2, there are several Sooners still available for the final day of the 2022 NFL draft.

Heading into Day 3 of the 2022 NFL draft, several Sooners have yet to hear their name called. The only real surprise is Perrion Winfrey, who was projected to go in the top 100 picks by nearly every mock draft we’ve evaluated over the last four months.

Whoever takes the talented defensive line prospect is going to get a steal.

But the Sooners have several really good players remaining on the board that could impact teams in Year 1. [autotag]Isaiah Thomas[/autotag], [autotag]Kennedy Brooks[/autotag], [autotag]Marquis Hayes[/autotag] and [autotag]Delarrin Turner-Yell[/autotag] would provide solid depth and could develop into starters at the NFL level.

[autotag]Gabe Brkic[/autotag] could kick for a number of NFL teams, but kicker is one of those positions that doesn’t always get drafted. The same goes for [autotag]Jeremiah Hall[/autotag]. He could be a starting fullback in the NFL, but will teams value the position enough to spend a draft pick.

[autotag]Michael Woods[/autotag] and [autotag]Tyrese Robinson[/autotag] can help some teams, but they may have their choice of teams as undrafted free agents.

Let’s take a look at the remaining Oklahoma Sooners draft prospects, and how they ranked according to Dane Brugler, Matt Miller and Bleacher Report.

Which Oklahoma Sooners made ESPN draft analyst Matt Miller’s top 300 for the 2022 NFL draft?

As the 2022 NFL Draft approaches ESPN Draft Analyst Matt Miller released his top 300 prospects with nine Oklahoma Sooners making the cut.

Draft season is about to come to a close when the 2022 NFL draft kicks off next Thursday night. The Oklahoma Sooners will be well-represented over the three day event with anywhere from six to 10 players getting their name called.

Over the last few weeks we’ve looked at where Dane Brugler of The Athletic has the Sooners draft prospects ranked in his draft guide “The Beast” and where they went in his full seven-round mock draft.

CBS Sports followed that up with their own seven-round mock draft and as many as seven Sooners were selected in each of the pre-draft projections.

It’s that time of year where teams and analysts finalize their big boards. What’s notable with Oklahoma prospects is the diversity of thought that’s come to pass on certain prospects. Others have seen a decline or rise in value. In particular it feels like Nik Bonitto and Perrion Winfrey have settled into a mid second to early third round picks.

Brian Asamoah and Isaiah Thomas on the other hand have a wide range of potential outcomes depending on how the draft falls.

Delarrin Turner-Yell looks to have made himself a draftable asset with his work in meetings with teams. His name continues to pop up in rankings and mock drafts. He might be a late-round selection, but he’ll get picked.

Today, we’re taking a look at ESPN draft analyst Matt Miller’s Top 300 prospects for the 2022 NFL draft. Nine Sooners were  ranked inside his top 300.

2022 Spring Preview: What does tight end look like for the Oklahoma Sooners?

What does the tight end position look like for Oklahoma entering the spring?

Oklahoma received steady if not spectacular play from its tight ends a season ago. Jeremiah Hall, who entered the 2022 NFL draft, finished last season as OU’s leading tight end with 32 receptions for 334 yards and four touchdowns. His receptions total and receiving touchdowns were tied for third-highest for Oklahoma and his receiving yardage ranked fifth on the team.

Where does Hall’s departure leave Oklahoma entering the 2022 spring season, and what does the tight end position group look like moving forward? We’ve broken down the wide receivers and the quarterbacks heading into spring ball, now let’s take a look at Oklahoma’s tight ends.

Oklahoma Sooners 2022 NFL Combine testing results

How did the Oklahoma Sooners perform at the NFL combine? Here are the results.

11 Oklahoma Sooners participated in the 2022 NFL Combine over the weekend. In addition to the testing that occurred, the annual scouting event in Indianapolis provided the first opportunity for players to meet with teams ahead of the NFL draft in late April.

Players didn’t participate in every event as most will wait for Oklahoma’s Pro Day on March 9th to do more on-field work or to test on the bench press.

The only player to take part in each of the combine’s on-field tests was Jeremiah Hall. Hall’s being viewed as a fullback at the next level and has a chance to hear his name called in the 2022 NFL draft because of his pass-catching prowess.

Kicker Gabe Brkic didn’t participate in any on-field testing, but a kicker doesn’t need to run fast or bench 225 a bunch of times to be a good kicker.

As Oklahoma gets set to host its pro day on Wednesday, here’s where 11 of the 12 NFL draft prospects stand.

How has NFL.com graded Oklahoma’s NFL draft hopefuls heading into the scouting combine?

As several Oklahoma Sooners prepare for the NFL draft, here’s how NFL.com’s draft analysts have the hopefuls graded.

Figuring out where players will get selected in the NFL draft isn’t a guessing game you want to put a lot of money on. Many players will get a consensus draft slot, like Alabama’s Evan Neal or Michigan’s Aidan Hutchinson. Both of those players are consensus top five players in the draft.

In a year where there isn’t a sure-fire quarterback occupying the top spot, it’s challenging to determine where the top players will land. While it’s likely those players will go in the top five, it’s not always a sure thing. Positional value comes into play.

It gets even more difficult as the draft goes along. Some teams will value a trait that other teams deem less valuable. Because NFL teams differ so much on draft analysis and projections, draft analysts will vary.

As we’ve seen in recent mock drafts, as many as four Oklahoma Sooners could go in the top three rounds of the 2022 NFL draft. Nik Bonitto and Perrion Winfrey have been top 60 players throughout the draft process, but joining them recently is linebacker Brian Asamoah. In the Draft Wire’s latest three-round mock draft, Marquis Hayes jumped into the top 100 as well.

Over at NFL.com, they’ve done scouting reports on eight of the 12 Sooners declared for the NFL draft and eight of the 11 Sooners who will participate in this week’s festivities in Indianapolis.

Let’s look at how NFL.com has the Sooners graded at this point in the draft process.

Top 5 returning Oklahoma Sooners receiving yardage leaders for 2022

Marvin Mims leads the way for Oklahoma pass-catchers set to return in 2022. Who else returns production for OU?

There’s no getting around it. Oklahoma is replacing a lot when it comes to receiving yardage leaders. In fact, OU is set to replace four of its top five in that category.

Oklahoma’s second-leading receiver was Michael Woods II who declared for the 2022 NFL Draft. Woods caught 35 passes for 400 yards and a pair of touchdowns. The Sooners’ No. 3 receiver, Jadon Haselwood, transferred to Arkansas. Haselwood finished just behind Woods in yardage, pulling in 39 catches for 399 yards and had six touchdown receptions.

Mario Williams ranked fourth for Oklahoma with 35 receptions for 380 yards and four touchdowns, but he’s off to USC with former head coach Lincoln Riley and former starting quarterback Caleb Williams. Tight end Jeremiah Hall also declared for the 2022 NFL Draft after recording 32 grabs for 334 yards with four touchdowns.

Where does it leave Oklahoma entering 2022 with returning receiving yardage leaders?

‘Very clear what the goals were’: QB Dillon Gabriel on joining Oklahoma

Oklahoma starting quarterback Dillon Gabriel made his first public comments since joining the Sooners on “The Podcast on the Prairie.”

Admittedly, it was a whirlwind for quarterback Dillon Gabriel once he entered his name into the transfer portal on Nov. 27.

After taking several visits, Gabriel announced on Dec. 16 he would be transferring to UCLA. Part of the rationale for Gabriel’s decision was then-Ole Miss offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby’s move to join Oklahoma’s staff.

Of course, things changed quickly with the Sooners’ quarterback situation when true freshman Caleb Williams entered his name into the transfer portal on Jan. 3. It was later on that same day that Gabriel announced his commitment and transfer to OU.

What many didn’t know was that it was also the same day that Gabriel was set to start class at UCLA. Gabriel detailed as much in his first public comments since joining Oklahoma with hosts Jeremiah Hall and Brayden Willis on Wednesday’s edition of “The Podcast on the Prairie.”

“Definitely on the day of me committing, just on my side—I think a lot of people know on Caleb’s side—but on my side, a lot was just going on. I was starting school at UCLA at the time. Didn’t end up going to class, because in the NCAA there’s also a rule that, you know, there’s a couple of things you have to pass to officially be enrolled in that school. So, didn’t end up going to class on that Jan. 3 and then once obviously Caleb announced, you know, called coach Leb and there was just an open opportunity. It was a chance to play with a really good team. This school’s got a lot of history with quarterbacks, but also just with great players,” Gabriel said.

It didn’t take long for Gabriel to get acquainted with the expectations at Oklahoma either. In fact, the 6-foot, 186 pound signal-caller said those standards were clear straight away.

“I think the biggest thing is obviously, you know, not looking past there’s a conference championship, taking care of business on that side of things and then, you know, obviously, being at this caliber school, that national championship is something we always chase. That was not no unknown when I first walked in. Right when I walked in, it was very clear what the goals were. Being around guys like that, shoot, we all make each other better and we all push each other. Even in the workouts, the type of leadership we’ve got in the building, man, it’s crazy to see. I’m just blessed to be here, grateful and, shoot, we’re going to get to work,” Gabriel said.

Something else that has been made evident is that Gabriel is Oklahoma’s guy entering 2022. Lebby wasted no time on national signing day announcing that Oklahoma would proceed with Gabriel as its starter.

“Yeah, Dillon’s our guy right now as we move forward. Again, we’ve got one guy on our roster that’s thrown a college football pass. Obviously, he’s thrown a bunch of them and he’s thrown them really, really well, so we’re going to move forward that way and go get ready,” Lebby said.

Gabriel has made 25 collegiate starts and thrown for 8,037 yards and 70 touchdowns in his career, so he’s accustomed to being the guy.

“I think for me that doesn’t really change anything in terms of like continue to compete, continue to work, be who I am. That’s who I am, too, so it’s a bit easier for me, because I ain’t got to fake it. I continue to work and grind every day because that’s what a quarterback does. They set the standard, but also bring the guys around them to do the same thing. With that, it’s just continue to be cohesive, because it’s a new staff but also because it’s a new team, it’s a new squad. Just getting it all together. You know how it is every single year. That’s really the big thing. The faster we click, the more growth that can be made,” Gabriel said.

Now, it’s about the opportunity that has been presented and continuing to build the relationships with his teammates in the months leading up to the start of the 2022 college football season.

“I think just the whole opportunity in general. It’s just…a lot comes with it, but I’m also the man for the job and excited for it. I know there’s a lot of guys around me too. Just being able to be at a different program and then coming to this one, there’s a lot of great things that come with this program too that a lot of people don’t get to see. There’s a bunch of great dudes. There’s a bunch of smart dudes, too. Just great men and just being around those kind of guys just uplifts the whole program and all the guys in that building. For the most part, just a bunch of great dudes that have opened up, or let me come in with open arms and I’m grateful for it,” Gabriel said.

Gabriel reunites with Lebby in Norman. During his freshman season at UCF in 2019 with Lebby as his offensive coordinator, Gabriel passed for 3,653 yards and 29 touchdowns.

“It’s funny because I think that I’ve got the memory of the UCF Leb, but, man, dude’s grown. I can even see in the offense a lot of things that we were talking about and trying to find answers to. Now, it’s on a whole other level in a really good way. Shoot, I’m just excited. I’m glad to be back with Leb. Obviously, love being coached by him, pushed me to be a lot better than I play and gets me to play at a higher level, so that’s all I can ask for,” Gabriel said.

The Sooners open the season and the Gabriel era on Sept. 3 when they play host to UTEP.
