ESPN suggests 49ers trade with Dolphins for running back help

An interesting idea…

As the 2024 season shakes out, it’s beginning to appear more like a ‘when’ than an ‘if’ the San Francisco 49ers will make a trade to try and improve their roster.

With the trade deadline approaching on Nov. 5, and the 49ers scuffling while dealing with a handful of injuries, there are a ton of routes the club can take to helping its roster.

We highlighted the No. 1 position they need to address, but that’s not what they go after in a piece from ESPN’s Bill Barnwell that includes 12 trades he’d like to see before the deadline.

Instead of addressing a couple of weak spots in their defense, Barnwell would have the 49ers deal a 2025 sixth-round pick to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for running back Jeff Wilson Jr. This is something the Athletic’s Matt Barrows has also discussed.

Running back help for the price a sixth-round pick could make a ton of sense for San Francisco.

When Christian McCaffrey returns is still a question mark, and how healthy he’ll be able to stay once he is back is also a concern. Having depth behind him and Wilson may be valuable down the stretch to help insulate them from injury.

Jordan Mason is also seeing a boatload of carries early in the season thanks in part to the 49ers not having a ton of faith in rookie Isaac Guerendo or veteran fourth-stringer Patrick Taylor. If McCaffrey doesn’t return, having a more solidified backup for Mason would be helpful.

Perhaps the best part of this trade for the 49ers is that it wouldn’t likely hamstring them from a larger deal addressing a bigger need or two ahead of the deadline.

Wilson was an undrafted rookie signing by the 49ers after the 2018 draft. He spent his first four-and-a-half seasons with San Francisco before joining the Dolphins in a trade he requested after the 49ers acquired McCaffrey in a trade.

In seven seasons Wilson has 2,353 rushing yards and 18 rushing touchdowns on 523 carries. He’s averaging 4.5 yards per carry in his career, including 4.8 in 2020 and 5.1 before the trade in 2022.

Dolphins restructure RB Jeff Wilson’s contract

Dolphins lower RB Jeff Wilson’s cap number in restructure.

Last offseason, the Miami Dolphins re-signed their entire running back room, including Jeff Wilson Jr., who rejoined on a two-year deal worth $6 million.

Wilson was set to have a $3.67 million cap hit in 2024, and with the Dolphins needing as much room as they can get, they’ve opted to restructure the running back’s contract, according to the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson.

With the original $3.67 million cap hit, there was a chance that the Dolphins would’ve cut him to save some money, as they’re already returning Raheem Mostert, De’Von Achane, Salvon Ahmed and Chris Brooks for the upcoming season.

In 10 games last season, Wilson rushed for 188 yards on 4.6 yards per attempt and brought in 14 receptions for 85 yards for Miami.

Now, with this restructured contract, Wilson is more likely to make the roster, as the Dolphins could keep all five on the 53-man again.

Studs and duds from Dolphins 21-14 loss to the Bills

Who deserves credit, and who deserves criticism for their performances?

The Miami Dolphins were handed their sixth loss of the season on Sunday, as they were defeated by the Buffalo Bills at Hard Rock Stadium.

Mike McDaniel’s team struggled in all three phases and still had a chance to win it late. Instead, they became the only team in the AFC East to lose to Buffalo twice in 2023, as the New York Jets and New England Patriots both earned splits.

As we do after every game, let’s take a look at some of those who deserve credit and some who deserve criticism. for their performances against the Bills.

Dolphins activate RB Jeff Wilson from IR, elevate TE from practice squad

Miami gets some RB depth back.

The Miami Dolphins had an open roster spot heading into their Week 7 matchup Philadelphia Eagles and some decisions to make in regards to elevations.

On Saturday the team announced two transactions – the activation of running back Jeff Wilson Jr. from injured reserve and the elevation of tight end Tanner Conner from the practice squad.

Wilson had suffered rib and finger injuries in training camp resulting in his placement on injured reserve. He’ll now join Raheem Mostert and Salvon Ahmed as the backs on the 53-man roster.

He’s the second player to return from injured reserve for the Dolphins this season. Only eight can do so in a single year.

This is Conner’s second elevation in as many weeks. He didn’t make a huge impact against the Carolina Panthers in Week 6, but that could change against the Eagles. He only has one remaining elevation after this game.

Dolphins open RB Jeff Wilson’s 21-day practice window on Wednesday

Miami will be getting one of their RBs back.

The Miami Dolphins have been going through a transition period at running back this week, as they lost De’Von Achane to injured reserve due to a knee injury that he suffered in their victory over the New York Giants.

Earlier in the week, NFL agent Drew Rosenhaus said that his client, running back Jeff Wilson, was ready to return to practice after missing the first five games on injured reserve himself.

Head coach Mike McDaniel, after downplaying the discussions on Monday, confirmed that Wilson will begin practicing and preparing for the Carolina Panthers this week.

From Wednesday, the Dolphins will have 21 days to activate Wilson from injured reserve, or he’ll be forced to sit out the remainder of the 2023 season.

If activated, Wilson will eventually work his way back into the rotation that includes Raheem Mostert, Salvon Ahmed and undrafted rookie Chris Brooks.

Dolphins RB Jeff Wilson to be designated to return from IR this week

Miami looks to be getting more RB depth soon.

The Miami Dolphins are off to a great start to their season, especially with their potent rushing attack, as Raheem Mostert and rookie De’Von Achane have rushed for 8.1 yards per attempt and 12 touchdowns on the ground.

Now, it appears Miami is adding more depth to the room.

According to NFL agent Drew Rosenhaus, the Dolphins are set to designate running back Jeff Wilson Jr. to return from injured reserve after dealing with rib and pinky injuries throughout the preseason and into the start of the 2023 campaign.

Miami will have 21 days to activate him, or he’ll be forced to miss the remainder of the season.

It’s unclear exactly how Wilson will fit in this group, but he’ll probably slot in above Salvon Ahmed and Chris Brooks on the depth chart.

UPDATE: Head coach Mike McDaniel said there’s no decision yet on whether or not Wilson will begin practicing this week.

Dolphins’ 2023 training camp preview: RB Jeff Wilson

He should be a major part of Miami’s game plan.

The Miami Dolphins have wrapped up their rookie minicamp, organized team activities and mandatory minicamps and will return to the Baptist Health Training Complex near the end of July to prepare for the 2023 regular season.

Before that, we’ll be going through the majority of Miami’s roster to preview their background, projected role and bottom line with the team entering training camp.

After looking at the top three quarterbacks on the roster and lead back Raheem Mostert, we’ll move on to another member of the running back room – Jeff Wilson Jr.
