The Jets’ 4 most surprising roster keeps

Some of the players the Jets decided to keep on roster cutdown day came as a surprise.

The Jets set their initial 53-man roster Tuesday after spending the afternoon trimming down from the 80 players they had in the building at the end of the preseason.

The roster New York unveiled is likely to change, as Joe Douglas will work the waiver wire, and potentially the trade market, to give Robert Saleh the best possible team to take with him to Carolina in Week 1.

Roster cutdown day featured a healthy dose of unexpected moves coming out of One Jets Drive. Here are four of Gang Green’s most surprising keeps.

WR Jeff Smith signs tender to return to Jets

The backup receiver is sticking around New York for another season.

Another member of the Jets’ 2020 receiving corps is returning.

Jeff Smith signed his one-year tender Tuesday, according to multiple reports. This comes a month after the Jets placed the tender on him as an exclusive rights free agent. Smith will earn the league minimum salary of $660,000.

Smith caught 17 receptions for 167 yards in 12 games last year. His best performance came in Week 4 when he tallied seven receptions for 81 yards against the Broncos. The 23-year-old Smith likely won’t see much of the field with Corey Davis, Jamison Crowder, Denzel Mims and Keelan Cole as the likely starters, but he’ll be a solid depth piece that can play in a pinch.

Jets tendering, re-signing WR Jeff Smith

The Jets have re-signed wide receiver Jeff Smith, according to multiple reports.

Jeff Smith is back with the Jets.

New York is tendering Smith to a deal, according to multiple reports. Smith was an exclusive rights free agent. He’ll receive the league minimum salary.

The 23-year-old wideout played in 12 games with four starts last season. Smith registered 17 catches for 167 yards in 2020, including a seven-catch, 81-yard performance against the Broncos in Week 4.

Smith went undrafted out of Boston College in 2019. He started as a quarterback for the Eagles but transitioned to wide receiver in his sophomore season.

Cleveland Browns (-10) at New York Jets

Jets injury report: Javelin Guidy doubtful, Shawn Jefferson won’t coach vs. Browns

Jets cornerback Javelin Guidry (knee) is now listed as doubtful for Sunday’s matchup against the Clevland Browns.

The Jets will be relatively healthy going into their Week 16 matchup against the Browns.

That said, CB Javelin Guidry (knee) is not expected to play Sunday and is listed as doubtful. WR Jeff Smith (shoulder) is questionable.

If Smith does play, he’ll be without his position coach. Assistant head coach and wide receivers coach Shawn Jefferson won’t attend the game as a result of a high-risk close contact. It’s likely that offensive assistant Hines Ward will assume Jefferson’s role as New York’s wide receivers coach.

For the second week in a row, defensive assistant Blake Williams will not attend the game. It is not illness-related.

The Jets did not practice on Friday, but the team’s injury report estimated that Josh Andrews, Jamison Crowder, John Franklin-Myers, Frank Gore, Ty Johnson, Frankie Luvu and Nathan Shepherd would all be full participants.

For Cleveland, Wyatt Teller, the team’s starting right guard, has been ruled out with an ankle injury. LB Malcolm Smith (hamstring) is questionable.

Jets injury report: Javelin Guidry’s status in doubt for Week 16

Jets cornerback Javelin Guidry (knee) was held out of practice for the second straight day, putting his status for Week 16, in doubt.

The Jets may have to turn to their third-string slot cornerback in Week 16 unless a Christmas miracle happens between now and Sunday.

Javelin Guidry (knee) was held out of practice for the second straight day on Thursday. The undrafted free agent rookie cornerback’s status for Sunday’s game doesn’t look too promising.

Over the past three games, Guidry has done an admirable job filling in for Brian Poole, who is out for the season after undergoing shoulder surgery. New York would have to reach further into its depth against Cleveland, with either Corey Ballentine or Elijah Campbell playing the slot. Normally, Arthur Maulet would slide into that role, but he’ll be manning the “field” safety position for the foreseeable future.

As for La’Mical Perine, the rookie running back is practicing this week, but Adam Gase was non-committal about his return to the active roster. Gase added that the Jets will likely wait until the end of the week before making a decision, per ESPN’s Rich Cimini,

Perine was placed on injured reserve in late November with a high-ankle sprain. The Jets designated Perine to return to practice last week and they have a 21-day window to activate him.

Frank Gore did not practice on Thursday as the veteran received a rest day, while Jeff Smith (shoulder) was a limited participant in practice. After being limited participants on Wedneday, Josh Andrews, Jamison Crowder, John Franklin-Myers, Frankie Luvu and Denzel Mims were upgraded to full participants on Thursday.

Jets DL Quinnen Williams done for the season

Quinnen Williams is done for the season due to a neck injury and a concussion.

Quinnen Williams’ breakout sophomore season has ended.

Adam Gase said Wednesday that Williams will be placed on injured reserve with a neck injury and a concussion. He’ll have to clear the concussion protocol before being placed on injured reserve, though. Williams suffered those injuries in Sunday’s 23-20 win over the Rams.

The second-year player out of Alabama emerged as one of the NFL’s top, young interior defensive linemen this season. In 13 games, Williams registered 53 total tackles, seven sacks, three pass defenses and two forced fumbles.

Now the question with Williams will be whether he can replicate his production in 2021. If he can, that would give the Jets a true force along their defensive line.

In other injury news, CB Javelin Guidry (knee) won’t practice on Wednesday. WR Jamison Crowder, WR Denzel Mims, WR Jeff Smith, OL Josh Andrews, LB Frankie Luvu and DL John Franklin-Myers will all be limited.

Jets first known team to punt twice on 4th & 1 in game’s first 5 minutes

The Jets offense continues to make history, but not in a good way.

The Jets offense continues to make history, but not in a good way.

New York became the first known NFL team to punt twice on 4th and 1 in the first five minutes of a game on Sunday, according to Pro-Football-Reference. Pro-Football-Reference’s database is only complete as far back as 1994.

On the Jets’ first drive of the game against the Cardinals, they were close to getting a first down on a pass to Jamison Crowder. However, he fell about a half-yard short, leading to a punt. On the Jets’ second offensive drive, they needed a yard for the first down, but Jeff Smith dropped an easy ball. Again, it led to another punt.

With Joe Flacco under center for the first time all season, the Jets offense is clearly still not in a rhythm in Week 5.
