A former Husker made her professional debut in Australia over the weekend. Jaz Shelley took the floor for the Ballarat Miners Women of the Mitsubishi NBL1 South league.

Shelley had ten points, six rebounds, one assist, and one steal in her first action of the season. She helped the Miners defeat the Dandenong Rangers 82-75 on Saturday.

After starting her career with the Oregon Ducks, the guard spent three seasons at Nebraska. In 35 games, she averaged 13.4 points, 5.7 assists, and 4.3 rebounds per game for the 2023-24 season.

The Phoenix Mercury took the Moe, Australia native in the third round of the 2024 WNBA draft. She was cut after the preseason’s competition.

Through 13 games this season, the Miners have a record of 5-8 and are ranked 13th out of 19 teams in the South division.

A former Nebraska women’s basketball player has left Lincoln to begin her professional career. Jaz Shelley will play for the Ballarat Miners Women of the Mitsubishi NBL1 South league.

Shelley spent three seasons at Nebraska after starting her career with the Oregon Ducks. In 35 games, she averaged 13.4 points, 5.7 assists, and 4.3 rebounds per game for the 2023-24 season.

The Phoenix Mercury took the Moe, Australia native in the third round of the 2024 WNBA draft. She was cut after the preseason’s competition.

Shelley says she’s excited to play basketball back home in Australia.

“I’m so excited to be back playing basketball in Australia again and even more thrilled to be able to come and play for the Ballarat Miners. I couldn’t think of a better coaching staff and group of girls to start this new journey with!”

Through 13 games this season, the Miners have a record of 5-8 and are ranked 13th out of 19 teams in the South division. There is no word on when Shelley will make her debut.

Shelley selected by Phoenix in WNBA draft

Shelley was taken with the 29th overall pick in the third round. 

Nebraska basketball’s Jaz Shelley was selected by the Phoenix Mercury during the WNBA draft on Monday night. Shelley was taken with the 29th overall pick in the third round.

She becomes the first Husker to go directly from Nebraska to the WNBA since Jordan Hooper in 2014. The Tulsa Shock selected Hooper as the No. 13 overall pick.

The native from Moe, Australia, averaged 13.4 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 5.7 assists while helping the Cornhuskers to the second round of the 2024 NCAA Tournament.

Over her three-year Nebraska career, Shelley finished 16th on the school’s all-time scoring list with 1,364 points. She was one of three Australians taken in this year’s draft, and one of seven Big Ten Conference players selected.

Phoenix is coming off a 9-31 season in 2023 with a sixth-place finish in the Western Conference.

Huskers fall to No. 3 Oregon State in second round of NCAA Tournament

The Nebraska women’s basketball team entered the second round of the NCAA tournament on Sunday afternoon.

On Sunday afternoon, the Nebraska women’s basketball team entered the second round of the NCAA tournament. The No. 6 Huskers faced off against host No. 3 Oregon State for a chance to reach the Sweet Sixteen for the first time since 2013. However, this did not come to pass. Nebraska fell to the Beavers 61-51, ending its run and the season.

The Beavers took a 19-11 lead at the end of the first quarter and kept their cushion of a lead for the remainder of the game. The middle quarters resulted in 34 total points combined, with Nebraska outscoring Oregon State 18-16. The Huskers scored 22 points in the fourth, but the Beavers scored 26.

Jaz Shelley scored 10 points, leading Nebraska in the field as its only double-digit scorer. Alexis Markowski and Annika Stewart both scored eight points in the loss. Markowski also hauled in eight rebounds to lead the team. Oregon State meanwhile finished with three players in double-digits for scoring.

Nebraska concluded the season with a final record of 23-12, the second-best record under head coach Amy Williams.

Pair of Huskers earn All-Big Ten Tournament team honors

A pair of Huskers earned All Big Ten Tournament team honors for their performances over the last four days.

A pair of Nebraska Cornhuskers earned All-Big Ten Tournament honors for their performances on Sunday afternoon.

Husker guard Jaz Shelley and forward Alexis Markowski were both named to the All-Tournament team, along with Iowa’s Caitlin Clark, Michigan’s Laila Phelia, and Iowa’s Sydney Affolter.

Shelly averaged 20.5 points per game in the Big Ten Tournament, including a 30-point effort against Maryland in the semifinals. She also averaged 4.5 rebounds and 8.5 assists per game. In the championship game, Shelly put up a valiant effort of 16 points, 13 assists, and six rebounds. She also had two steals and two blocks in the losing effort.

Markowski also had a fantastic championship game performance, scoring a double-double of 23 points and 13 rebounds. She also had five assists and two steals.

For the tournament, the Huskers’ star averaged 16.5 points, 11.5 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game, which is better than her season averages of 15.7 points, 10.7 rebounds, and 1.2 assists per contest.

While the Huskers’ championship game loss will sting, they must quickly turn their attention to the NCAA Tournament. On Sunday morning, the latest bracketology from Charlie Creme of ESPN projected the Huskers as the eighth seed in the Portland regional.

A Nebraska women’s basketball player has been named a member of the All-Big Ten first-team.

A Nebraska women’s basketball player has been named a member of the All-Big Ten first-team. Alexis Markowski earned the conference honor on Monday evening.

Markowski has averaged 15.8 points and 10.7 rebounds per game for the Cornhuskers this season. She is one of three Big Ten players to average a double-double during the regular season, joining Wisconsin’s Serah Williams and Illinois’ Kendall Bostic.

This is the first All-Big Ten first-team honor for the Lincoln, Nebraska native. She was named second-team All-Big Ten in 2022 and 2023 and was the Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 2022.

Joining Markowski in postseason honors is senior guard Jaz Shelley. The Australian was named second-team All-Big Ten team on Monday. Shelley averaged 12.8 points, 4.2 rebounds and 5.2 assists a game.

Nebraska will continue their season on Thursday at 2:00 p.m. in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament.

Jaz Shelley contributed a team-high and season-high 23 points in the loss. This is just Shelley’s third 20-point game of the season. She also finished the afternoon with a team-high eight assists. Alexis Markowski and Natalie Potts also finished in double-digits for Nebraska, each scoring 14 points.

Nebraska concludes the regular season with a 19-10 overall record and an 11-7 conference record. The Huskers drop to fifth in the conference standings and, if they stay there, will begin Big Ten Tournament action on Thursday afternoon. The Huskers came out on fire, finishing the first quarter up 20-8 before building the lead to 34-21 in the second quarter. Nebraska delivered a volley from beyond the arc, going 11-of-27 in three-point shooting.

Jaz Shelley finished with 16 points to lead the Huskers and went four-of-nine in three-point shooting. Shelley also led Nebraska in assists, finishing the game with seven. Natalie Potts delivered 12 points for the Huskers, going five-of-eight in total shooting.

Alexis Markowski rounded out Nebraska’s double-digit scorers in the win, scoring 10 points. Markowski also hauled in a team-high 12 rebounds to earn her 17th double-double of the season and her 38th of her career. Markowski is now 2nd in school history for double-doubles in a season and in a career.

Nebraska moves to 19-9 in the regular season and 11-6 in conference play. It will conclude the regular season on the road against Illinois on Mar. 3. Tipoff is set for 3:00 p.m. and can be viewed on the Big Ten Network.

The Huskers hosted Northwestern Tuesday night for their second to last home game of the season.

The Huskers hosted Northwestern Tuesday night for their second to last home game of the season. Nebraska dominated the Wildcats throughout, resulting in a massive 75-50 win.

The Huskers controlled the game from the start, blowing past the Wildcats and ending the first quarter up 20-6. Nebraska continued its surge until the end.

Freshman Natalie Potts finished the night as Nebraska’s top scorer, dropping 18 points. She also hauled in 10 rebounds to make it her fourth double-double of the season and led the team in steals with three.

Annika Stewart finished second in scoring for the Huskers, tallying up 13 points in the win. Freshman Logan Nissley dropped 12 points and led Nebraska in assists with six.

Alexis Markowski delivered 12 points for Nebraska while also earning ten rebounds for her 15th double-double of the season. Markowski is now second in school history for career double-doubles with 37 and tied her career-high for double-doubles in a season.

Nebraska improves to 18-9 on the season and 10-6 in conference play. They will remain home to play Minnesota on Saturday for Senior Night. Tipoff is set for 4:00 p.m. and can be viewed on B1G+.
