Former NBA star makes shocking start, bench, cut Jayson Tatum choice

The NBA Hall of Famer made the shock choice during a recent episode of his podcast.

Jayson Tatum has endured significant criticism this summer. NBA fans have been questioning his position among the best players in the world, with Steve Kerr’s decision to bench him in both of Team USA’s matches against Serbia adding fuel to the fire. Former Los Angeles Lakers star Michael Cooper has taken the opportunity to pile on.

Cooper’s criticism came during a recent “Start, Bench, Cut” game on his “Showtime with Coop” podcast. He had three choices: Scottie Pippen, James Worthy and Tatum. Of course, the Celtics star is the one who Cooper chose to cut, partially due to the resumes of the two former stars.

Nevertheless, Cooper’s decision is just another indication of the current lack of respect Tatum is receiving from the wider NBA audience despite leading the Celtics in every major statistical category during the NBA Finals.

Jayson Tatum doesn’t deserve the current criticism

Jayson Tatum doesn’t deserve the amount of criticism that has been sent his way since winning a championship with the Boston Celtics.

Since winning a championship with the Boston Celtics, Jayson Tatum has been under a microscope. NBA fans and media have been questioning his position within the NBA hierarchy, with some sharing their belief that he is being overrated for his role within the Celtics championship roster. That noise grew louder as Tatum struggled throughout the 2024 Paris Olympics.

There’s no denying that the St. Louis native struggled for Team USA. He was being asked to play a role that didn’t suit his skillset and was unable to find a rhythm as a result. However, over the past two years, he has unequivocally proven himself to be one of the top 10 players on the planet.

In the latest episode of the “First to the Floor” podcast, the hosts break down some of Tatum’s most memorable moments from his career to date before ranking them in order. The episode was designed to show some appreciation for Tatum at a time when there is a growing swell of negativity surrounding him.

Can Boston’s Olympians go from Olympic gold to a second championship?

Can the Boston Celtics gold medal-winning trio help bring back-to-back championships to the Celtics?

The Boston Celtics had three players on Team USA’s gold-medal-winning team at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Jrue Holiday, Derrick White and Jayson Tatum were all part of their country’s success this summer, allowing them to continue playing elite-level basketball after winning an NBA championship with the Celtics just a few months earlier.

Now, Boston’s Olympic trio must turn their attention back toward the upcoming season. The Celtics will have a target on their backs and will aim to win a second-straight championship to prove last season wasn’t an anomaly. A second straight championship would also disprove the narrative that their journey to the NBA Finals was an easy one.

During a recent episode of the “First To The Floor” podcast, hosts Jake Issenberg and Wayne Spooney discussed Boston’s upcoming season and why it’s important for their Olympic trio to share their current momentum in the locker room as the Celtics embark on what could be a memorable season.

Boston’s Jayson Tatum hangs 51 points on the Washington Wizards

Check out the St. Louis native’s historic performance in this highlight video.

When Boston Celtics All-Star forward Jayson Tatum breaks a shooting slump, he doesn’t pull any punches. And he didn’t in his 51-point pummeling of the Washington Wizards, powering the Celtics’ 116-87 beatdown of the Wiz at Capital One Arena on that fateful day.

The St. Louis native put up the third-most points of his career on his way to shooting 18-of-28 from the floor overall, 9-of-14 from beyond the arc and 6-of-6 from the charity stripe. Tatum nabbed 10 rebounds and 7 assists to round out his stat line. He committed one turnover — late in the game at that.

If you were among those taking the game off and need to see his historic performance for the first time or just want to bask in the glory of the former Duke star’s big night, check out the highlight clip put together by the NBA embedded below.

Former Boston point guard Jeff Teague thinks Celtics fans should thank Steve Kerr for benching Jayson Tatum

If it provides the sort of motivation Teague seems to think it will, we probably ought to.

For some fans of the Boston Celtics, the dual benching of star forward Jayson Tatum was nearly a personal affront. For others — including Celtics alumni — such a snub is only going to be fuel for future Boston greatness. And among the latter category, we can count former Celtics floor general Jeff Teague.

Teague opened up about how he saw Tatum’s benching on a recent episode of his “Club 520” podcast, even going so far as to suggest the St. Louis native’s participation with Team USA for the 2028 Olympics might be in jeopardy. “Tatum, bro, he’s done with the Olympics,” said the former Boston point guard via Basketball Network’s Yakshpat Bhargava.

“They just ruined everything for the NBA now, the USA team did,” he added. “Now you tell Jayson Tatum that he is the worst player out of all the elites.”

“The only player to make the All-NBA First team, the rest others were all Europeans, and you all (are) telling me I can’t compete against Serbia?” asked Teague. ” … He couldn’t get him five minutes? I’m never going to be okay with that. But if you’re Boston Celtics fans, you all should be thanking USA basketball.”

If it provides the sort of motivation Teague seems to think it will, we probably ought to.

NBA reporter expects Paolo Banchero and Cooper Flagg to make Team USA for 2028 Olympics

NBA reporter Evan Sidery listed three young basketball stars expected to play for Team USA at the 2028 Olympics, including two Blue Devils.

[autotag]Jayson Tatum[/autotag] was the only Duke basketball alum on Team USA at the 2024 Olympic Games, but NBA reporter Evan Sidery thinks the Americans will look a little more blue in four years.

Sidery listed three young Americans on Monday whom he expects to make the American roster at the 2028 Olympic Games, including former Duke basketball star [autotag]Paolo Banchero[/autotag] and future Duke basketball star [autotag]Cooper Flagg[/autotag].

Banchero nearly made the roster for France this summer, according to a Monday report from The Athletic’s Joe Vardon. Team USA managing director Grant Hill apparently sees his fellow Blue Devil as a future staple of Olympic rosters, and with national team experience at the 2023 FIBA World Cup, the Orlando Magic star seems to be getting prepared for future Team USA work.

Flagg might be even more of a lock. The top-ranked player in the Class of 2024 already faced the current Olympic squad with the Select Team at training camp this summer and walked away with the spotlight, making back-to-back baskets during a scrimmage and impressing Kevin Durant.

Fellow Duke alum Zion Williamson will also be a serious candidate for a roster spot if his health cooperates.

Paolo Banchero nearly made Olympic roster for Team USA, The Athletic reports

According to The Athletic’s Joe Vardon, former Duke basketball star Paolo Banchero nearly made the Team USA roster for the 2024 Olympic Games.

[autotag]Jayson Tatum[/autotag] became the first Duke basketball alum with two gold medals in France this summer, but he nearly wasn’t the only Blue Devil on the Team USA roster.

According to a Monday report from The Athletic’s Joe Vardon, former Duke star [autotag]Paolo Banchero[/autotag] nearly made the American roster for the 2024 Olympic Games. Vardon said Grant Hill, another Blue Devils legend and the Team USA managing director, wants Banchero on future Olympic teams after the Orlando Magic star was under “serious consideration” for a roster spot.

Banchero led the Blue Devils to the Final Four in 2021-22, Coach K’s final season in Durham, before he won NBA Rookie of the Year honors in 2022-23. The last of Duke’s five No. 1 NBA draft picks, Banchero averaged 22.6 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 5.4 assists during his second season.

He even proved himself on the playoff stage, taking the Cleveland Cavaliers to seven games during the opening round and putting together three 30-point performances in the process.

Banchero does have Team USA experience as he made the 2023 FIBA World Cup roster. The Americans finished fourth in that tournament, and Banchero averaged 8.1 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 1.4 assists in 15.2 minutes per game.

Will San Antonio Spurs star forward Victor Wembanyama take the biggest leap forward in the NBA after the Olympics?

Who will take the biggest leap forward in the NBA after the Olympics?

The 2024 Paris Olympics are now firmly behind us after the US National Team defeated the French National Team and San Antonio Spurs star forward Victor Wembanyama. But Wemby warned the world he plans on coming back better and more seasoned, hinting at a major leap forward on the court with the Spurs in the Association for the 2024-25 season ahead.

Who will take the biggest leap forward in the NBA after the Olympics? Could the benching of star Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum with Team USA be the catalyst to make Tatum take that mantle next season? Or is 2028 Olympic basketball the future domain of Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards?

The hosts of the ESPN “First Take” show, Harry Douglas, Joe Fortenbaugh and Kendrick Perkins, debated who will grow the most next season in the NBA. Take a look at the clip embedded below to hear what they had to say.

Watch the clip to see the worst (or at least the funniest) of the Celtics over the last decade and a year.

While it might not be an honor to appear on former Boston Celtics big man Shaquille O’Neal‘s “Shaqtin a Fool” segment on TNT’s “Inside the NBA,” a fair number of Boston players making a guest appearance over the years. The segment, for the uninitiated, is effectively the blooper reel of the dumbest, funniest or weirdest things Shaq and company caught on video that week.

Now, YouTuber and Celtics fan videographer Danielle Hobeika put together an all-time compilation of when Celtics players made the show. The list includes Rajon Rondo, Mikael Pietrus, Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, Kris Humphries, Vitor Faverani, Kelly Olynyk, Jeff Green, Brandon Bass, Isaiah Thomas, Marcus Smart, Terry Rozier, Al Horford, Gerald Green, Jayson Tatum, Daniel Theis, Kemba Walker, Jaylen Brown, and Glen “Big Baby” Davis.

Watch the clip embedded below to see the worst of Boston over the last decade and a year — and try not to drink anything while you watch it.
