Where LSU’s 2023 recruiting class ranks across the industry following recent decommitments

Brian Kelly’s 2023 class remains well-positioned despite recent losses.

LSU’s 2023 recruiting class took a couple hits in recent days with two blue-chip defensive linemen decommitting in [autotag]Darron Reed[/autotag] and [autotag]Joshua Mickens[/autotag].

There hadn’t been much negative news on the trail this cycle. LSU’s class has been trending up since the day [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] took the job. This is the first real step back.

The sky is yet to fall, though.

LSU’s class remains comfortably in the top 10 and the defensive line is still in a good spot, too, anchored by [autotag]Dashawn Womack[/autotag] and [autotag]Jaxon Howard[/autotag]. On3 gave Womack his fifth star last week.

Following the shakeup, here’s where the class ranks.

  • 247Sports: Fifth
  • On3: Sixth
  • Rivals: Sixth
  • ESPN: Eighth
  • Average rank: 6.25

There aren’t too many blue-chip defensive linemen left on the board to replace Reed and Mickens, but LSU could be preparing some big additions on the backend.

According to 247’s and On3’s respective prediction systems, LSU is in a good spot with defensive backs [autotag]Desmond Ricks[/autotag] and [autotag]Javien Toviano[/autotag]. Commitments from Ricks and Toviano would bring LSU’s class to 25 players and give LSU the strong DB class that it needs.

We’ll begin to find out more about the future roster in early December with the transfer window and early signing day.

LSU defensive line commit flips to another SEC school

The Tigers lost a top-200 commit to Auburn on Friday.

LSU has an elite recruiting class to be thankful for in 2023, but it lost a four-star recruit to the Auburn Tigers on Friday morning.

[autotag]Darron Reed[/autotag] is a defensive lineman from Columbus, Georgia, where he plays for Carver-Columbus high school. Reed committed to [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] and LSU back on July 4.

After Reed committed to LSU, he took three visits to Auburn to watch a few games. Auburn is less than an hour away from Columbus, so it is convenient and close to home. Early signing day is a month away, so this is not the news Kelly was wanting to hear for his 2023 recruiting class that ranks as the No. 5 class in the country.

The class took a hit losing a really talented guy in Reed, but this is still a talented defensive line class that includes blue chips in [autotag]Dashawn Womack[/autotag], [autotag]Jaxon Howard[/autotag] and [autotag]Joshua Mickens[/autotag]

‘One of the best facilities I’ve ever been to in my life’: Rising Minnesota LB high on Clemson

A fast-rising linebacker, who hails from Minnesota’s Robbinsdale Cooper High, participated in the Dabo Swinney Camp back on June 2.

Emmanuel Karmo — a 6-foot-3, 205-pound junior linebacker in the class of 2025 — spoke to The Clemson Insider last month regarding his time at Clemson earlier this summer and was left impressed with what Dabo Swinney and the Tigers had to offer.

It actually went great,” Karmo said “When I first got there, it was all good vibes — they was cracking jokes. The linebacker coach, it was like he was an older brother to me. He was just cool. And I really liked the facility too.”

“As soon as I walked in, I was like ‘Man, this is a nice facility,’” he recalled. “They had all the trophies. It was just like ‘Wow’; one of the best facilities I’ve ever been to in my life.”

Karmo got a good feel for Wesley Goodwin, who placed him in the top group with some upperclassmen, once he arrived for the one-day session of Swinney Camp. He admitted that he could’ve done better, but felt happy about the effort he put forth in Tiger Town.

In addition to Clemson, Karmo camped at the Mercer Mega Camp (twice), Georgia State Mega Camp, the Baller’s Choice Camp, Auburn and the University of Minnesota, among several others. Karmo, who is a native of the North Star State, returned to Minneapolis at the end of July.

“That was good, actually,” Karmo said. “When I first got my first offers, I texted my whole family — that was special. I feel like these camps made me way better than I thought I could be. I thought I was good. I thought I needed to get my name out there. I thought Minnesota was slept on. When I got out of Minnesota (this summer) and started doing drills (at camps) and stuff, I thought that made me way better and changed my way of play.”

Prior to camping at Clemson on June 2, Karmo picked up an offer from Southern Illinois. Two days later, ECU presented him with his second scholarship offer.

“It showed that we got good players here and that just really made me happy,” he said.

Good players like Jaxon Howard.

The top-100 national recruit and one of the nation’s top edge rushers picked up an offer from Clemson in January of this year from Kyle Richardson, but never gained much traction with the Tigers. Howard, the top-ranked prospect in the state of Minnesota in the class of 2023, elected to commit to Brian Kelly and LSU back on July 1.

Karmo is teammates with Howard and both prospects are two-way players for Robbinsdale Cooper. Back in mid-July, Karmo said that he’s very excited for the upcoming season because there are some people who have the impression that his high school team might not be as good because they lost all their seniors.

Karmo will be among the players who step up for Robbinsdale Cooper, which starts its season on Friday, Sept. 2.

“I think I’m very fast for my age,” Karmo said when asked to describe himself as a player. “I run a 4.6 (40-yard dash) as a freshman, so when I get older, I know I’m gonna be way faster…I don’t think that’s normal for a linebacker. I think I’m gonna be real good and I think I’m faster than most linebackers.”

Karmo plays both outside linebacker and middle linebacker, but he’ll be starting at the MIKE-backer position, as well as at wide receiver.

Recapping LSU’s recruiting additions during the month of July

Brian Kelly was cooking on the trail in July.

While there was a bit of concern over LSU’s slow start to the 2023 recruiting class, those worries are a thing of the past as the calendar turns to August.

Tigers coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] picked up 11 commitments in the 2023 class — and three in 2024, to boot — during the month of July, enough to propel LSU’s group into the national top 10, according to 247Sports.

There are still some areas of need in the current cycle, including at quarterback, the Tigers have the makings of a very strong class, and they’re not done yet. Here’s who they picked up during a stellar month from Kelly on the trail. All rankings are based on the 247Sports Composite.

BREAKING: LSU lands another four-star edge rusher

The Tigers have landed their eighth four-star commit in the 2023 class.

Defense wins championships. At least, the Tigers will certainly hope that’s true.

LSU has now landed two four-star edge rushers in the past two days in [autotag]Jaxon Howard[/autotag] and now [autotag]Joshua Mickens[/autotag], who announced his commitment on Sunday. Mickens is a 6-foot-5, 225-pound edge rusher from Indianapolis, where he plays for Lawrence Central.

According to On3, Mickens is a top-50 player in the country. He becomes the eighth commit of the 2023 class for LSU and the second edge rusher. He’s rated as the No. 2 prospect in the state of Indiana and the No. 164 player in the country.

Coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] is known for building great recruiting classes and he is well on his way as he already has eight four-stars committed for 2023. The Tigers’ class now ranks 37th nationally with the addition of Mickens, so there is still a lot of work to do between now and signing day.

Still, LSU has had a solid stretch on the trail after things were quiet for a bit.

Looking at LSU’s commits so far in 2023 class

A running tracker of every commit the Tigers have landed this cycle.

In the words of Alice Cooper, school’s out for summer. But when it comes to recruiting, there is no off-season.

[autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] is known for always having great recruiting classes every year. His first recruiting class at LSU was ranked as the No. 7 class in the country last year, and he’s already off to a hot start for the 2023 class.

So far, the Tigers have seven commits for this class, and that list is growing by the day. So, let’s take a look at all of the athletes that have committed to playing for LSU in 2023.

Disclaimer: Even though these kids are currently committed to LSU until they put pen to paper and sign their name on the dotted line, they can change their minds and play elsewhere. This list will be updated as more players commit.

NEW: 4-star EDGE Jaxon Howard commits to LSU

LSU landed the highest-rated commit in its class on Friday.

The No. 1 player in Minnesota from the 2023 recruiting class has committed to playing for the LSU Tigers.

[autotag]Jaxon Howard[/autotag] is rated as the premier prospect in the Gopher State by every recruiting site, and he is ranked as a top-100 player on Rivals.com. He becomes the seventh commit of the 2023 class for Tigers head coach, [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] and his staff.

He is the sixth four-star in the recruiting class and the first defensive lineman to commit. With the addition of Howard, LSU’s class now ranks 43rd nationally per the 247Sports Composite. He becomes the highest-rated prospect in the class.

LSU could possibly land another four-star edge rusher on July 4 as [autotag]Dashawn Womack[/autotag] will hold his announcement. Womack is down to a list of five schools: LSU, Maryland, Oregon, Ole Miss, and Georgia.
