Podcast: Diving deeper into Jags Wire’s latest 7-round mock

Jags Wire James Johnson and Phil Smith go over their newest mock for the Jags as the first week of free agency is over.

In this week’s episode of “Bleav in the Jaguars,” Jags Wire contributor Phil Smith and myself started things off re-ranking the Jacksonville Jaguars’ needs  now that free agency has been ongoing for over a week. Overall, there were eight needs discussed though some weren’t as pressing as others.

Afterward, we dove deeper into the recent mock draft released on Jags Wire this week. It’s one that knocked out all eight of the needs we discussed before hand and utilized all 10 Jags selections.

The full episode can be heard below in the media player, while our archived episodes can be revisited here.

2021 Jags Wire mock: 7-round projections after Week 1 of free agency

The Jags helped their defense tremendously in free agency, but the need for a No. 1 tight end is still there.

The first week of free agency is behind us and the Jacksonville Jaguars made several notable additions to their roster. That makes it the perfect time for us to release a new mock draft as the Jags added a total of 12 new faces from other teams when including their decision to trade for Malcom Brown.

This will mark our second mock of the season as our last one came out over a month ago. It has a lot of elements as the last one due to the Jags free agency approach, but at the same time, it also includes some interesting changes. Just as we did last time, we used Pro Football Network’s mock draft simulator, and below are the results we came away with.

Bills meet virtually with Louisville RB Javian Hawkins

RB Javian Hawkins has pre-draft meeting with Buffalo Bills.

Bills general manager Brandon Beane indicated following the season that he wants his team’s rushing attack to improve… but he specifically did not blame rushers Devin Singletary and Zack Moss for struggles.

However, the team continues to do some early offseason scouting on running backs ahead of the 2021 NFL Draft.

According to Justin Melo of The Draft Network, Bills scouts spoke virtually with Louisville running back Javian Hawkins.

Hawkins appeared in eight games in 2020, totaling 822 rushing yards on 133 attempts for 6.2 yards per carry and seven rushing touchdowns. Hawkins is a dynamic threat as both a runner and receiver as he added 16 receptions for 127 yards and a touchdown last season.

According to Pro Football Focus, Hawkins was also very good in pass protection. On 231 pass-block snaps, he never allowed a single sack. The 5-foot-9 rusher is known for his home run type of speed as well.

Cardinals meet with Louisville RB Javian Hawkins

He rushed for 1.525 yards and nine touchdowns in 2019, a Louisville school record.

It is draft season and NFL teams are preparing for it. The Arizona Cardinals have been evaluating prospects and could address their running back room in the draft, as Kenyan Drake is a free agent as of next month and Chase Edmonds enters the final year of his rookie contract.

According to Justin Melo, the Cardinals are one of many teams to have met with Louisville running back Javian Hawkins.

He met with scouts from the Cardinals and other teams.

Hawkins is listed at 5-foot-9 and 196 pounds, which is comparable to Edmonds’ build at 5-foot-9 and 210 pounds.

He had a huge season in 2019, setting a school record with 1,525 rushing yards and nine touchdowns. He averaged 5.8 yards per attempt. In a shortened season in 2020, he had 822 yards and seven scores in eight games, averaging 6.2 yards per carry.

He also added 16 catches for 127 yards as well in 2020.

He is a big-play threat and can be used in the passing game. He is a slightly smaller version of Edmonds, who might be the lead back this season for the Cardinals.

Report: Louisville RB Javian Hawkins has met with Jags this offseason

The Jags need some quickness on their offense and some of the prospects they’ve shown interest in can give them that like Javian Hawkins.

Jacksonville Jaguars fans can add another quick playmaker to the mix of interviews the team has conducted virtually.

According to Justin Melo of the Draft Network, the Jags have met with Louisville running back Javian Hawkins this offseason. They are far from alone, however, as the young rusher from Titusville, Fla. has spoken with scouts from almost half the league.

As mentioned above, Hawkins balled out during his redshirt freshman season, rushing for a school-record total of 1,525 yards, which was good for seventh in the nation. He also was able to garner 10 touchdowns in the process and earned an All-ACC second-team selection that season.

Hawkins had a productive season in 2020 as well, taking the field for eight games. He was able to accumulate over 820 rushing yards for seven touchdowns while averaging 6.2 yards a carry.

With the Jags already having a star in running back James Robinson, it seems the Jags could aim to get a speed option to compliment him this offseason. Hawkins potentially joining the mix certainly would be intriguing, especially if he can offer a spark as a receiver.

As of now, many mocks have Hawkins down as a fourth to fifth-round selection. The Jags have four picks in that range (two in both rounds), so fans definitely should monitor his name heading forward.

Packers meet virtually with Louisville RB Javian Hawkins

The Packers had a pre-draft virtual visit with Louisville running back Javian Hawkins.

Add another running back to the list of prospects the Green Bay Packers have met with leading up to the 2021 NFL draft.

According to Justin Melo of The Draft Network, Packers scouts spoke virtually with Louisville running back Javian Hawkins.

As a redshirt freshman, Hawkins set a new school-record rushing for rushing yards in a season by a running back with 1,525 in 2019. He finished seventh in the nation in rushing and also added nine touchdowns. Hawkins earned an All-ACC second-team nomination for his performance.

Hawkins appeared in eight games in 2020, totaling 822 rushing yards on 133 attempts for 6.2 yards per carry and seven rushing touchdowns. Hawkins is a dynamic threat as both a runner and receiver. Last season, he had 16 receptions for 127 yards and a touchdown.

When the ball is in his hands, Hawkins is a north and south runner with tremendous speed.  He’s quick, elusive and a big play waiting to happen. According to Pro Football Focus, Hawkins was also very good in pass protection. On 231 pass-block snaps, he never allowed a single sack. That certainly checks a box for what Green Bay looks for in their running backs.

This is the second running back the Packers have met with in the last couple of weeks. They’ve already spoken with Oregon State running back Jermar Jefferson.

The Packers are doing their due diligence in gathering information on this year’s class of running backs should they lose both Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams in free agency. If Green Bay selects Hawkins in the upcoming draft, he has the skillset to be the lightning to A.J. Dillon’s thunder.
