Secret Superstars for Week 5 of the 2022 NFL season

Taysom Hill, Rhamondre Stevenson, Daymi Brown, Alijah Vera-Tucker, and Baron Browning are among Doug Farrar’s Secret Superstars for Week 5.

There are all kinds of reasons that NFL players are underrated and unsung.

Perhaps they’re in systems that don’t best show their skills. Maybe they’re buried on a depth chart. Or, they’re in somebody’s doghouse, and their coaches can’t see their potential. Or, their efforts are relatively unnoticed among their more celebrated teammates. Sometimes, young players haven’t quite put it all together, but there are enough flashes to make you sit up and take notice, and when it does work, it’s all good.

Week 5 of the 2022 regular season featured players at just about every position who showed up and showed out despite their underrated statuses, and here at Touchdown Wire, it’s our job to point them out.

Rhamondre Stevenson, Dameon Pierce, Daymi Brown, Taysom Hill, Ethan Pocic, Alijah Vera-Tucker, Matt Judon, Baron Browning, Osa Odighizuwa, Teair Tart, Dre Greenlaw, Camerson Dantzler, and Caden Sterns are our Secret Superstars for Week 5 of the 2022 NFL season.

Here’s why each of them made the cut.

Ravens HC John Harbaugh ‘very impressed’ with OLB Jason Pierre-Paul

Ravens head coach John Harbaugh says he’s “very impressed” with outside linebacker Jason Pierre-Paul

The Baltimore Ravens were able to pull out an impressive 19-17 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 5 of the 2022 season. There were multiple contributors who stepped up on all three sides of the ball, but one new addition has impressed head coach John Harbaugh so far.

Harbaugh was asked about veteran outside linebacker Jason Pierre-Paul and what he’s brought to the table so far. Harbaugh said he’s been “very impressed” with Pierre-Paul, praising his ability to get his hands on the football as well as his willingness to play hard.

“Very impressed. He hadn’t played at all in training camp or in the season. I thought he looked good the first week, and now just a little bit better this week. To get his hands on those balls, and to pressure the quarterback, strong against the run. He plays super hard, he’s a hard playing guy. You can tell he loves the game, so he’s a big plus for us. I’m very happy that we have him.”

Pierre-Paul got his hands on back-to-back passes in Week 5, while also showing up big-time with a sack on Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow. He’s been asked to play a big role right out of the gate for Baltimore, and has responded as well as one could have imagined.

Ravens release final injury report for Week 5 matchup vs. Bengals

The Ravens released their final injury report on the week ahead of a Week 5 matchup with the Bengals

The Baltimore Ravens will play their first division matchup of the 2022 season when the team welcomes the Cincinnati Bengals into M&T Bank Stadium for Sunday Night Football in Week 5. Both teams will look to improve on their current 2-2 overall record and get an advantage over the other in the standings.

The Ravens released their final injury report for Week 5 on Friday, with the list featuring three players who will miss the matchup, two who are listed as questionable and four other players who don’t have a status heading into the game.

Headlining the list is wide receiver Rashod Bateman (foot) who will not suit up in Week 5. After missing practice all week, it was suspected that Bateman would not be ready for the contest. Running back Justice Hill (hamstring) and outside linebacker Justin Houston (groin) will also not play. Players listed as questionable are cornerback Marcus Peters (quad) and offensive tackle Ronnie Stanley (ankle). The four players who did not have a status for the game on the final report, but are expected to play are linebacker Josh Bynes (hip), running back J.K. Dobbins (chest), offensive lineman Patrick Mekari (ankle) and outside linebacker Jason Pierre-Paul, who was given a day of rest.

The Bengals also released their final injury report of the week on Friday. Headlining their report are wide receiver Tee Higgins (ankle) and former Ravens tight end Hayden Hurst (groin), who are both questionable for Sunday.

Ravens DC Mike Macdonald discusses performance of OLB Jason Pierre-Paul in Week 4 vs. Bills

Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald discussed the performance of outside linebacker Jason Pierre-Paul in Week 4

The Baltimore Ravens suffered a 23-20 defeat to the Buffalo Bills in Week 4 of the 2022 season. They were able to build a 20-3 lead before halftime, but saw it slip away due to a multitude of reasons both offensively and defensively.

A player who suited up in a Baltimore uniform for the first time in Week 4 was outside linebacker Jason Pierre-Paul, who officially signed with the club earlier in the week. When defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald was asked about the performance of Pierre-Paul against Buffalo, he said that the veteran was in for more plays than they were anticipating, citing it as impressive.

“Yes, it’s kind of impressive. Obviously, [Jason Pierre-Paul] played more plays than we were anticipating, especially [with] a couple of the two-minute drives. And how these games have gone on is … It turns into a passing game later in games, so your numbers tend to spike when that happens. If you look at New England and the type of game that was, it’s a little bit different, in terms of dynamic, and the play counts kind of reflect that. Yes, he probably played a little bit more than we were anticipating, but it was impressive, from not being in camp and … But he’s a pro, and he’s a great guy, and all of the stuff that we’re asking him to do, he’s done a million times, just we call it something else than he’s used to calling it.”

Pierre-Paul finished the contest with four total tackles, three of which were solo stops. He stepped up and played a major role on the Baltimore defense with fellow veteran outside linebacker Justin Houston sidelined, and could be asked to play the same part on Sunday night in Week 5 against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Ex-Giants Blake Martinez, Jason Pierre-Paul work out for Ravens

Former New York Giants LB Blake Martinez and DE Jason Pierre-Paul worked out for the Baltimore Ravens on Tuesday.

With the regular season in full bloom, roster shuffling continues among NFL teams due to injuries and signings to and from practice squads.

For the New York Giants, their surprising move came just prior to the season when they parted ways with Linebacker Blake Martinez.

Martinez, who remains unsigned, had a work out with the Baltimore Ravens on Tuesday.

Another familiar name to Giants fans also surfaced with Baltimore’s work outs — Jason Pierre-Paul.

Martinez was a Giants free agent acquisition back 2020. He and cornerback James Bradberry were extremely productive in their first years with the team. Now, two years later, they both find themselves elsewhere.

Pierre-Paul, 33, won two Super Bowls with the Giants and was one of the big free agent signings in 2016, having re-signed with Big Blue. He was, of course, traded to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2018 where he had remained until this year.

Additionally, former Giants quarterback Mike Glennon had a workout with the San Francisco 49ers following a season-ending injury to Trey Lance.

The Niners opted to go with another option from the workouts.

As the season resumes and roster shuffling continues, workouts will continue for the Giants and the rest of the NFL. Reports surfaced Tuesday that head coach Brian Daboll has been FaceTiming with free agent receivers. Time will tell if anything comes from that.

Key updates were reported in the Ravens’ pursuit of outside linebacker Jason Pierre-Paul

The Baltimore Ravens are struggling in the health department at outside linebacker. They have just two healthy at the position at the moment in Odafe Oweh and Justin Houston, seeing Tyus Bowser, David Ojabo, Vince Biegel and Steven Means all go down with torn achilles injuries in less than a year.

On Tuesday, it was reported by multiple outlets that Baltimore hosted free agent outside linebacker Jason Pierre-Paul for a visit. After the news broke, Josina Anderson of CBS Sports provided key updates on the situation, saying that Pierre-Paul told her that “everything went good” with his workout and that there is mutual interest. However, she also reported that he said he’ll see how the business side goes, as other teams have reached out.

It’s unclear which teams were the ones to reach out to Pierre-Paul, so it remains to be seen how the situation plays out. The veteran has a plethora of experience across 12 NFL seasons, totaling 603 tackles, 91.5 sacks and 21 forced fumbles.
