Watch: Jason McCourty reports what he saw, heard while at Titans camp

Jason McCourty was at Titans camp on Saturday, Here’s what he saw and heard.

The Tennessee Titans welcomed several former players to training camp this past week, with former defensive back and current “Good Morning Football” host Jason McCourty being among them.

McCourty made the rounds on Saturday, with the former sixth-round pick watching practice and taking the time to speak with players such as wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins and running back Derrick Henry.

McCourty also spoke to general manager Ran Carthon and characterized the Titans’ approach as a renovation rather than a rebuild, which is now quite obvious after the addition of Hopkins.

Check out all that and more from McCourty’s visit in the video below.

After an off day on Sunday, the Titans will return to the practice field on Monday for their fourth open session of training camp. It’s also the first practice in which pads can come on, although it hasn’t been confirmed if Tennessee will follow suit.

Regardless, we’ll have full coverage once it’s over.

JC Tretter and NFLPA announce new executive director

NFLPA announces Lloyd Howell is the new Executive Director.

[anyclip pubname=”2103″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8036″]

Former Cleveland Browns center and NFLPA President JC Tretter announced that the NFL Players Association have elected Lloyd Howell as their new executive director. Lloyd Howell will be replacing DeMaurice Smith after the season. Lloyd Howell is a seasoned businessman whose last role was Chief Financial Officer of Booz Allen, a large consulting firm in Virginia before taking over with the NFLPA.

He has also served on the board of various companies. Former Browns center JC Tretter was in charge of the search and was assisted by other former Browns players Alex Mack and Jason McCourty.

Lloyd Howell will become the fourth executive director in the NFLPA’s history. Lloyd Howell’s skills as a businessperson signal that the Players Association could pivot from their reliance on legal strategies to combat potentially unfair NFL policies. DeMaurice Smith, a former lawyer, has overseen the last two collective bargaining agreements.

The handling of the 2020 collective bargaining negotiations was very contentious between two camps of players. Soon after, Smith was narrowly elected to his fifth term. The NFLPA would begin a 16-month search for Smith’s replacement shortly thereafter. Lloyd Howell inherits the agreement for the next seven seasons. In that time he will try to build consensus among the two camps.

In a statement, Howell said, “The opportunity to represent the players is a privilege. I look forward to building relationships and the solidarity amongst our players. The history and strength of this institution is impressive, and I look forward to driving our bold goals and achieving them together in the future,”

Roger Goodell released a statement to congratulate the new executive director, “I want to congratulate Lloyd Howell on his election as Executive Director of the NFL Players Association and to thank DeMaurice Smith for his continued partnership and unstinting work on behalf of NFL players. We look forward to working with Lloyd and his team to continue growing the game and making it better, safer, and more accessible and attractive to fans around the world.”

While Howell and Goodell have yet to work together, watching how their partnership will shape the sport will be interesting.

Jason McCourty: Panthers made NFL’s biggest offseason move

Jason McCourty believes the Panthers’ additions of Frank Reich and Bryce Young, not the Jets’ trade for Aaron Rodgers, will be the most impactful move from the 2023 offseason.

[anyclip pubname=”2103″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8036″]

After 18 years with one franchise, a four-time Most Valuable Player, four-time First-team All-Pro, 10-time Pro Bowler, Super Bowl champion and future Hall of Fame quarterback was traded—and to “The Big Apple,” no less. So, that was undoubtedly the biggest move of the offseason, right?

Not according to Jason McCourty, who believes that honor belongs to the Carolina Panthers.

The former safety and current co-host of Good Morning Football was asked if Aaron Rodgers’ trade to the New York Jets will end up being the most impactful acquisition of the spring. While he does love himself some A-Rod, McCourty said the Panthers’ additions of head coach Frank Reich and quarterback Bryce Young will have a greater effect in the grander scheme of things.

“I’m gonna say the Panthers getting Frank Reich and the first overall pick will be the biggest offseason move,” he stated. “You look at the Carolina Panthers a year ago—Matt Rhule’s the head coach. Matt Rhule is fired. Steve Wilks takes over. You remember Robbie Chosen, Robbie Anderson—he gets into a blowout on the sideline, he’s walking into the locker room during the game.

“So the Panthers—with where they were last season to where they are now—getting a head coach in Frank Reich, now getting Bryce Young as their quarterback. This, to me, can be the offseason move of the future where you’re just like, ‘My goodness.’ You look at the Panthers over this past year, the trajectory that they’re on, where they’re going to be—this could’ve been the biggest move of the offseason. Them getting that first overall pick so early on and having a head coach to develop their next young quarterback.”

And that, not so coincidentally, was Carolina’s plan all along.

The hiring of Reich, a former quarterback and heralded offensive play caller, was partly inspired by the franchise’s recent woes under center. Plus, powering your way to the top of the draft board to pick any rookie passer you want is a pretty effective way to fix that position as well.

So while Rodgers may make his presence felt more than any newcomer in 2023, it may be Reich and Young who run with the ball for years to come.

Devin McCourty and Jason McCourty name hardest NFL players to tackle

Who were some of the hardest NFL players to tackle for Devin McCourty and Jason McCourty?

[anyclip pubname=”2103″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8036″]

Former New England Patriots safety Devin McCourty started the conversation on the hardest players he’s had to tackle over the course of his NFL career.

The conversation started with former Patriots running back Steven Jackson before expanding and leading to Jason McCourty to chime in as well. Jason had a productive career, and it included a stint in New England from 2018-2020. He won a Super Bowl with the organization in the process.

He responded to his brother’s Twitter post, where Devin named off Marshawn Lynch, LeSean McCoy and Jamaal Charles as some of his hardest tackles. That list was an easy co-sign for Jason, who also threw Maurice Jones-Drew and Chris Johnson’s name in there as well.

“Add Jones-Drew to that and I watched Chris Johnson make guys fall in practice when the drill was touch,” Jason tweeted.

One has to wonder what it would have been like to tackle any of the running backs listed. It’s fun to reminisce with the McCourty brothers on the many great players that made an impression on them during their playing days.

Devin McCourty, Jason McCourty host Boston Medical Center equity event

The McCourty brothers continue to give back to the greater Boston community.

[anyclip pubname=”2103″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8036″]

Devin McCourty and Jason McCourty were back together in Boston to host the 2023 Boston Medical Center’s “BMC Seasons” event on Saturday night at the Seaport Hotel.

Per the BMC’s website, this event will raise “critical support for leading health equity initiatives—including food access, investments in housing, financial literacy, and much more—that rely on philanthropy.”

Both of the McCourty brothers have been shining examples to the greater Boston community in their willingness to give back. So it’s no surprise they were once again at the forefront in spearheading hosting duties for such a great cause.

The McCourty brothers have always been proponents of social equity, and it certainly feels good to know they are striving to drive change even after retiring from football.

Watch: Jason McCourty rips Jaguars while making Titans pick

Former Titans cornerback Jason McCourty used his time on the draft stage to dish out some AFC South trash talk.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are reigning AFC South champions and are largely favored to defend their title in 2023. But former Tennessee Titans defensive back Jason McCourty, who is now a host on Good Morning Football, still found a way to talk some trash about Jacksonville on Friday.

While announcing pick No. 81 in the third round, McCourty went on a rant about everything from barbecue to the Titans’ AFC South opponents:

“For the Titans, the division is ours,” McCourty said. “I don’t care what Houston did yesterday, they’re going to go and get their Letterman’s jackets again. The Indianapolis Colts are 2-6 against the Titans since Pat McAfee came up here and did his wrestling announcement.

“And the Jacksonville Jaguars, they haven’t had back-to-back winning seasons since I was a senior in high school.”

Technically, McCourty isn’t wrong. The last time the Jaguars strung together winning seasons was when they finished 9-7 in 2004 and 12-4 in 2005.

That doesn’t change the current state of affairs in the division, though. While the Jaguars have a franchise quarterback in place, the Titans are putting much of their hopes in second-round pick Will Levis.

McCourty, 35, played the first eight years of his NFL career with the Titans. He announced his retirement from football last summer.

Jason McCourty goes on epic rant before announcing Titans’ 3rd-round pick

Jason McCourty had quite the moment before announcing the Titans’ third-round pick in the 2023 NFL draft.

Former Tennessee Titans defensive back Jason McCourty was tasked with announcing the team’s 2023 third-round pick (No. 81 overall) on Friday night, but the “Good Morning Football” host added a lot extra to his role.

McCourty ended up going on an epic rant that not only went after the host city’s team, the Kansas City Chiefs, he also repped the Titans by going after the entire AFC South, while also staking the Titans’ claim to Oilers history.

Admittedly, McCourty’s rant went on a bit too long, making it awkward, but I can let it slide when he’s throwing shade at the Chiefs and the division in the process. Check out the rant in full below.

McCourty didn’t have the attention of Titans fans for long, as he went on to announce the selection of running back Tyjae Spears, which was a puzzling pick to say the least and rightly drew quite the negative reaction from fans and media alike, including from our own Shaun Calderon.

Putting that aside for now, a look at how Twitter reacted to McCourty’s moment.

Jason McCourty got NFL fans riled up with his 2023 NFL Draft hot takes on BBQ, AFC South

Jason McCourty brought the heat with his 2023 NFL Draft pick announcement for the Titans.

Right on the heels of Dallas Cowboys legend Drew Pearson trolling the 2023 NFL Draft crowd, fellow league veteran Jason McCourty picked right back up where Pearson left off.

As he announced the Titans’ third-round draft pick, McCourty, sporting a sharp Houston Oilers jacket, went to the stage and did as much taunting as he possibly could.

Perhaps his biggest digs were at the AFC South and Kansas City barbecue. He (correctly) says that Tennessee has better barbecue than Kansas City, which of course won’t go over well in any place but Tennessee.

He even pulled former NFL punter and media personality Pat McAfee into his trolling somehow. Like, this was an unexpected delight from McCourty.

McCourty knows that the best way for the NFL Draft to stay entertaining is by the pick announcers to have some fun with the audience.

Thankfully, he answered the call and gave us some entertainment well into round three.

Jason McCourty will announce Titans’ third-round pick in NFL draft

Jason McCourty will announce the Titans’ third-round pick on Day 2 of the 2023 NFL draft.

Retired former Tennessee Titans defensive back Jason McCourty will lend a helping hand to the team during the 2023 NFL draft.

The “Good Morning Football” co-host revealed on Monday that he will be announcing the team’s third-round pick in the draft. Tennessee’s third-round selection comes at No. 72 overall and is one of six picks the team has.

Tennessee has a selection in every round but the fourth thanks to the 2021 trade with the Atlanta Falcons for Julio Jones.

McCourty is just the latest guest to announce a pick for the Titans in the NFL draft. In 2022, Oilers great Billy “White Shoes” Johnson announced the team’s second-round selection of cornerback Roger McCreary.

McCourty, who retired following the 2021 campaign, spent eight seasons with the Titans after being selected in the sixth round of the draft. He also spent time with the New England Patriots, Cleveland Browns and Miami Dolphins during his impressive 13-year career.

Jason McCourty says Maurice Jones-Drew was toughest player to tackle

Former Titans and Patriots cornerback Jason McCourty says no player he faced was harder to bring down than Maurice Jones-Drew.

Maurice Jones-Drew was not an easy guy to bring down during his NFL career and Jason McCourty found out the hard way in 2011.

In a Week 1 opener, the Tennessee Titans cornerback stepped up to the line of scrimmage to try to stop Jones-Drew. Instead he was bowled over by the Jacksonville Jaguars running back, sending both McCourty’s helmet and the helmet of Titans linebacker Akeem Ayers flying.

“Every time I see MJD, he always talks to me about this play,” McCourty said this week on an episode of NFL Network’s Good Morning Football. “He was so tough to tackle and bring down and he ran with a ton of power.

“He was so low to the ground and it’s like ‘Alright, I gotta go low,’ but that’s the strongest part of his body. So the following year I just started tackling him high and waiting for the calvary to get there.”

That game, a 16-14 win for the Jaguars, was the first during the best season of Jones-Drew’s career. He finished the year with an NFL-leading 1,606 rushing yards and earned First Team All-Pro honors, something only seven different Jaguars players have ever accomplished.

According to Pro Football Focus, 954 of Jones-Drew’s rushing yards that season came after contact and he forced 47 missed tackles that year.
