2024 NFL Draft: Top college football quarterback performances from week 7

There were some notable performances from top quarterbacks in college football including Michael Penix Jr.

What a day of college football that we had on Saturday. It was a day that epitomizes why the game of football is so beautiful. We had games with huge upsets, some unreal performances, not to mention a probable game-of-the-year candidate.

Amidst all the chaos, a select few quarterbacks rose to the occasion to lead their respective offenses to outstanding performances. We use this exercise to list the best ones from last weekend for draft-eligible quarterbacks.

Kansas fans lost their minds after securing their first bowl berth since 2008

HAVE A DAY, JAYHAWKS.

The Kansas Jayhawks have a lot to be proud of.

After demolishing No. 18 Oklahoma State 37-16, the Jayhawks gained bowl eligibility for the first time since 2008.

It’s been a rollercoaster season for the Jayhawks, with a 5-0 start and AP ranking hampered in part by an injury to red-hot QB Jalon Daniels. Jason Bean has admirably filled in for Daniels, helping Kansas continue their outstanding season after several years of struggle.

While Jayhawks running back Devin Neal’s 224 rushing yards set the tone for the offense on the day, Bean was stellar behind center, passing for 203 yards and two touchdowns and rushing for 93 yards and a score.

After the win, Bean became emotional while celebrating a special day for the Kansas football program.

It’s a powerful reminder of how 2022 will always be a special season for Kansas fans, and Bean in particular. He wasn’t supposed to start this season, but he’s filled in with just enough success to get the Jayhawks across the bowl game threshold.

Bean’s 72-yard touchdown run alone should make him feel proud for how much he helped the team during Daniels’ absence.

Kansas fans were clearly excited about the school’s big win as they rushed the field, brought down the goalpost and threw it in a lake.

Report Card: Offense carrying the load in a bounce-back performance

Oklahoma’s offense led the way versus Kansas, and it shows with their grades in this week’s report cards.

The last three weeks had to be an evaluation and film study nightmare for the Oklahoma Sooners. There were injuries, bad technique, and missed assignments on both sides of the ball. They needed a decent performance against a tough Kansas team, and they delivered on Saturday.

The result was far from dominant unless you look at the offense’s performance alone but what transpired was a team desperate for a win that played hard and didn’t let up.

As we do at Sooners Wire, we took time to grade each unit for their performance in Oklahoma’s 52-42 win..

Oklahoma Sooners’ offense explodes in 52-42 win over Kansas Jayhawks

Dillon Gabriel threw for 403 yards, and Eric Gray rushed for 176 yards to lead the Oklahoma Sooners in their 52-42 win over Kansas.

Oklahoma snapped a three-game losing streak on Saturday with a 52-42 win over the No. 20 Kansas Jayhawks on homecoming weekend.

The big storyline leading up to the week was the availability of both starting quarterbacks for each team. Jayhawks starter Jalon Daniels sat out due to a shoulder injury and was replaced by Jason Bean. At the same time, Oklahoma was hopeful for the return of QB1 Dillon Gabriel, who had missed last week’s Red River Rivalry game against Texas because of a concussion suffered in the blowout loss to TCU.

With Gabriel back, Oklahoma looked like the offensive juggernaut most are accustomed to seeing from Oklahoma teams. They put up over 700 yards of offense and scored 50 points for the first time this season.

The Sooners took the ball first and promptly drove down the field for a one-yard Jovantae Barnes touchdown run. Kansas answered with a 39-yard touchdown pass from Jason Bean to Lawrence Arnold. The two teams traded touchdowns again to end the first quarter tied at 14 apiece.

Oklahoma would settle in defensively allowing just 7 Kansas points in the second quarter, while the offense kept on humming for 21 points in the 2nd quarter.

An uber-athletic interception from Wyoming transfer C.J. Coldon gave the corner his second in as many weeks. The offense worked in harmony and consistently had the Jayhawks off balance all day. Running back Eric Gray finished with 176 yards on 20 carries for two touchdowns. His backup, true freshman Jovantae Barnes, ran 21 times for 69 yards with two rushing touchdowns himself.

Marvin Mims had a career-high nine catches for 106 yards, and senior tight end Brayden Willis added five catches for a career-high 102 yards for the Sooners. Oklahoma was finally able to showcase their offensive talent with a functional and capable thrower at QB.

Gabriel was 29 of 42 for 403 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for a score. The Sooners quarterback threw his first interception of the season and lost two fumbles.

Oklahoma kept the foot on the gas thru the 3rd quarter, putting up another two touchdowns and kept the pressure on the Jayhawks.

The Jayhawks’ inability to get stops doomed Kansas as they weren’t able to keep up with Dillon Gabriel and the Oklahoma Sooners’ offense.

The defense played well during a stretch at the end of the first quarter to midway through the second quarter, but Kansas came out guns blazing in the second half trying to catch up. They outscored the Sooners 21-17 after halftime, but the haltime deficit was too much to overcome.

The defense forced seven tackles for loss, a couple of turnovers, and recorded one sack on the day. They have work to do, but it was a better performance than what we’ve seen from them in recent weeks.

Oklahoma’s win marks their 18th straight against Kansas. It’s a confidence-building win heading into their bye week before taking on Iowa State in Ames, Iowa, on October 29th.

Final thoughts as the Oklahoma Sooners get set to face the Kansas Jayhawks

With game time approaching, here are this week’s final thoughts as the Oklahoma Sooners get set to take on the 5-1 Kansas Jayhawks.

“Fall is a reminder that change can be beautiful.” That’s the sign that we have hanging over the television in our living room, where my wife and I enjoy college football Saturdays.

There hasn’t been a lot to enjoy with the Oklahoma Sooners the last three weeks, but this Saturday could be different. This Saturday could provide the spark that the Sooners need to finish the 2022 season on a high note.

Saturdays in the fall provide a fresh opportunity for every college football team to change the narrative. It’s a clean slate. You can’t change what happened in the previous three weeks. All we can do is look forward.

The guy that the Oklahoma Sooners hired 10 months ago is still the guy. What was exciting about Brent Venables, the passion, the defensive prowess, the recruiting capabilities, and the love of Oklahoma Football, are all still true. A few bad weeks doesn’t change the outlook for what will be a bright future for the Oklahoma Sooners with Brent Venables at the helm.

But as the Oklahoma Sooners prepare to face the No. 20 ranked Kansas Jayhawks (Coaches Poll), this team needs to play more competitively to provide evidence for the optimism many still feel about Venables and his coaching staff.

Change can be a good thing. Time for Venables and the Oklahoma Sooners to remind us of that.

Here are this week’s final thoughts.

Oklahoma Sooners vs. No. 20 Kansas Jayhawks: Sooners Wire Staff Predictions and more

Staff predictions and more for the Oklahoma Sooners matchup with the Kansas Jayhawks.

The Oklahoma Sooners need a win in the biggest way when the Kansas Jayhawks come to town on Saturday. Losers of three straight, the Sooners haven’t looked good on either side of the ball.

The defense is struggling to find its identity, and the offense has been inconsistent. Dillon Gabriel is expected back, and that should help the offense find a much better rhythm and balance than it did a week ago against the Texas Longhorns, where the passing game was nonexistent.

But even with Gabriel back, this game feels like a tough matchup with a Jayhawks offense that’s been rolling set to square off against a reeling Sooners defense.

For the second-straight week, quarterback availability is the big storyline. Jayhawks starting QB Jalon Daniels won’t be available for this game. Instead, Jason Bean will start in his place. Bean played well in the matchup with the Sooners a year ago and looked really good in the second half of Kansas’ loss to the TCU Horned Frogs a week ago.

Get set for Saturday’s game with our Sooners Wire staff predictions plus a look at how analysts across the country expect this game to go.

5 defensive players to watch for Oklahoma as they take on No. 20 Kansas

Oklahoma takes on No. 20 Kansas on Saturday and we are looking at 5 defenders to watch.

Oklahoma is desperate for a win to regain any semblance of confidence that they’ve lost over the three-game losing streak.

A tough loss to Kansas State turned into a lopsided shellacking at the hands of TCU in Fort Worth, which ultimately culminated in last week’s 49-0 drubbing thanks to the Texas Longhorns.

In every one of those losses, the Sooners gave up 40 or more points.

On Saturday, the No. 20 Kansas Jayhawks team will stroll into the Palace on the Prairie fresh off their first loss of the season to No. 13 TCU. Kansas comes in with a dynamic offensive team averaging just a touch under 40 points per game.

They are a balanced offensive club averaging 226.3 passing yards per game and 215.2 rushing yards per game. For the majority of the season, the Jayhawks have been led by junior quarterback Jalon Daniels but after suffering an injury against TCU, Daniels looks doubtful for the game on Saturday according to ESPN.

Regardless, Oklahoma will have their hands full Saturday with backup QB Jason Bean, whom they faced last year. Their defense couldn’t stop a nosebleed of late so Daniels or not, this game should pose a significant threat to Oklahoma.

How do they go home Saturday night in their new UNITY uniforms winners? They’ll need better performances from these five defenders.

5 players to watch on the Oklahoma Sooners offense against Kansas

In need of a bounce-back performance, these five Oklahoma Sooners will be key against the No. 20 Kansas Jayhawks.

It was rock bottom for Jeff Lebby’s offense against the Texas Longhorns. The Sooners ran more of the wildcat offense against Texas than some programs do in multiple seasons.

This offense needs to bounce back in a big way against Kansas. Good news: the Jayhawk defense is allowing over 400 yards per game. Assuming there is stability at the quarterback position, the Jayhawks shouldn’t give the Sooners as much trouble as the Longhorns did.

Oklahoma Sooners open as favorites at home against Kansas

Despite their struggles in recent weeks, the Oklahoma Sooners open as favorites heading into their week seven matchup with the Kansas Jayhawks.

Sure, the [autotag]Kansas Jayhawks[/autotag] lost starting quarterback [autotag]Jalon Daniels[/autotag] in Saturday’s loss to the TCU Horned Frogs, but [autotag]Jason Bean[/autotag] came off the bench and played really well, giving the Jayhawks a chance to win the game at the end.

At the same time, the [autotag]Oklahoma Sooners[/autotag] were getting waxed by the Texas Longhorns for their third straight loss. Another loss in which the defense allowed 40 or more points.

The Sooners were without starting quarterback Dillon Gabriel, but that wasn’t the only issue on Saturday in the Cotton Bowl. Gabriel could be back next week when Oklahoma hosts Kansas. But is that enough to put the Sooners as the favorites for the week seven clash?

Well, according to the folks over at BetMGM, yes. BetMGM has the Sooners as 6.5-point favorites against the Jayhawks this Saturday in Norman. If you’re looking at the two teams and where they are at this point in the season, you’d think that line would go the other way. Again, even with Jason Bean at quarterback, the Kansas Jayhawks hung with a TCU team that beat the Sooners 55-24.

The line will fluctuate as the week goes along, but if you’re looking to get in on the action early in the week, take Kansas plus-6.5 and if Oklahoma’s going to have a chance in this game, take the over.
