Panthers Week 5 inactives: Josey Jewell, 5 others out vs. Bears

As expected, the Panthers will be without starting ILB Josey Jewell against the Bears this afternoon.

The Carolina Panthers deemed six players as inactive for this afternoon’s matchup against the Chicago Bears, including starting inside linebacker Josey Jewell.

Jewell, who was already ruled out of the contest on Friday’s injury report, is currently dealing with hamstring and groin issues. Through four games, the 29-year-old veteran has amassed 30 combined (second-most on the team) with three passes defensed and a fumble recovery.

Carolina’s defense is also without fellow starting inside ‘backer Shaq Thompson, who was officially placed on injured reserve yesterday. The longtime Panther will miss the remainder of the 2024 campaign after tearing his Achilles tendon in the Week 4 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.

Rookie Trevin Wallace and veteran Claudin Cherelus are expected to start in place of Jewell and Thompson.

Head coach Dave Canales talked about the two earlier this week.

“Yeah, Claudin Cherelus is gonna have a great opportunity to play some football for us,” Canales said to reporters on Monday. “A guy that really took strides in camp, and a guy that we’re definitely looking forward to seeing out there to play football. For he and Trevin [Wallace] to start communicating and be able to work with the whole group.”

Here is the full list of inactives for the Panthers in Week 5:

  • RB Mike Boone
  • LB Josey Jewell
  • G Jarrett Kingston
  • DE Jayden Peevy
  • C Andrew Raym
  • S Russ Yeast

And here’s who is down for the Bears:

  • FB Khari Blasingame
  • WR Velus Jones Jr.
  • DL Zacch Pickens
  • DL Dominique Robinson
  • DB Terell Smith

Panthers Week 1 inactives: 7 players deactivated for opener vs. Saints

The Panthers named seven inactives for their regular-season opener in New Orleans.

The Carolina Panthers have listed seven inactives ahead of this afternoon’s regular-season opener against the New Orleans Saints.

Those players are as follows:

  • CB Shemar Bartholomew
  • G Jarrett Kingston
  • DL LaBryan Ray
  • C Andrew Raym
  • S Jammie Robinson
  • TE Messiah Swinson
  • TE Tommy Tremble

With Tremble down due to a hamstring injury and Ian Thomas now on injured reserve with a lingering calf issue, the Panthers are expected to start rookie tight end Ja’Tavion Sanders in what will be his first official NFL game. The fourth-round pick earned rave reviews from head coach Dave Canales earlier this summer.

“So JT is taking those steps that we’re looking for,” Canales said of the 21y-year-old during training camp. “Made a big play at Fan Fest to end it, to end the scrimmage on a corner. Had a couple nice plays today, nice catches. He’s doin’ it. He’s making the most of his opportunity. It’s pushed him right up with that first group, to be able to show the guys you can count on him and he’s been really dependable with that.”

Sanders will be backed by veteran Jordan Matthews and Feleipe Franks, who was signed to the active roster on Saturday.

Panthers announce new uniform numbers for 6 players

There’s a new No. 0 in town for the Carolina Panthers.

Carolina Panthers tight end Ja’Tavion Sanders has his own number.

On Monday, the team announced new uniform numbers for six players ahead of the 2024 regular season. The rookie pass catcher headlined the switches, as he’ll be going from No. 85 to No. 0.

Sanders, Carolina’s fourth-round pick from this year’s draft, wore No. 0 during his final two seasons for the University of Texas Longhorns. And that number saw some numbers—as he reeled in 99 receptions for 1,295 yards and seven touchdowns en route to a pair of First-team All-Big 12 selections in 2022 and 2023.

Shortly after being selected by the Panthers, Sanders told reporters that he was planning on claiming his digit—but also admitted that he had to earn it first.

“That’s the plan,” he said with a smile. “If I’m lucky enough to get 0, then I’m definitely taking it for sure.”

The 21-year-old will be the second player in franchise history to don No. 0—which was first worn by Brian Burns in 2023.

All six uniform number adjustments are as follows:

  • TE Ja’Tavion Sanders: No. 0
  • CB Mike Jackson: No. 2
  • CB Keenan Isaac: No. 12
  • CB Shemar Bartholomew: No. 27
  • CB Tariq Castro-Fields: No. 29
  • G Jarrett Kingston: No. 61

Panthers updated 53-man roster following Wednesday’s waiver claims

The Panthers added six new faces on Wednesday.

The Carolina Panthers and general manager Dan Morgan put their top spot on the waiver wire to good use on Wednesday, claiming a total of six players following the league’s initial roster cutdowns.

Here’s a fresh look at Carolina’s roster following the additions:

49ers lose 4 players, including 2 promising rookies, to other teams

After spending camp in Santa Clara, a pack of four former 49ers were claimed through waivers on Wednesday.

Following the final wave of cuts on deadline day, players went through the waiver process on Wednesday before becoming free agents. After the 53-player cutdown day on Tuesday, four former members of the San Francisco 49ers landed with new teams, including three players being claimed on Wednesday.

Rookies Jarret Kingston and Cody Schrader were claimed, along with former starting defensive back Samuel Womack. Kingston and Schrader each flashed in the preseason. Kingston was claimed by the Carolina Panthers and former Missouri All-American running back Schrader landed with the division rival Los Angeles Rams. Womack was claimed by the Colts.

Along with losing Kingston, Womack and Schrader, the 49ers will also be without linebacker Jalen Graham. According to Eric Branch of The San Francisco Chronicle, the Washington Commanders have claimed Graham. Graham was drafted in the seventh round of the 2023 NFL draft out of Purdue.

As final rosters are still being finalized with different moves, the 49ers were awarded no waiver claims on Wednesday.

Panthers announce waiver claims for 6 players on Wednesday

The Panthers officially announced their claims for six players on Wednesday.

Yes, guys. It’s official. It’s confirmed. The deals are sealed.

Following yesterday’s cutdowns to this season’s initial 53-man rosters, the Carolina Panthers announced waiver claims for six players on Wednesday afternoon. The group features former Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Keenan Isaac, former New York Jets cornerback Shemar Bartholomew, former Washington Commanders cornerback Tariq Castro-Fields, former Seattle Seahawks linebackers Jamie Sheriff and Jon Rhattigan and former San Francisco 49ers offensive lineman Jarrett Kingston.

Carolina’s fresh trio of cornerbacks is headlined by Isaac, who had a standout preseason for the divisional rival Bucs. The 6-foot-3, 190-pound defensive back earned a 90.2 coverage grade from Pro Football Focus over his three exhibition outings on the summer.

To make room for the claims, the Panthers also announced the departures of six players from their initial 53-man roster—wide receivers Ihmir Smith-Marsette and Jalen Coker, offensive lineman Cade Mays, defensive lineman Jayden Peevy, cornerback D’Shawn Jamison and safety Demani Richardson.

Why Jarrett Kingston could be an unexpected NFL draft gem for 49ers

Jarrett Kingston might be able to stick with the 49ers. If he can, he becomes a high-value sixth-round pick.

In the sixth round of the 2024 NFL draft, the San Francisco 49ers selected Jarrett Kingston from USC football with the 215th overall pick.

Kingston began his collegiate football career at Washington State University. From 2018-22, he appeared in 37 games on the offensive line with 26 starts – 16 starts at left guard and 10 starts at left tackle. During his time at Washington State, Kinston earned a Pac-12 Offensive Lineman of the Week award and a 2022 All-Pac-12 Conference honorable mention.

The offensive lineman later transferred to USC for his final season of college football. In 2023, Kingston made 12 starts at the guard and center positions.

Though the veteran offensive lineman has physical limitations and a lack of upside, he is still a valuble and high-IQ interior lineman who will have a long NFL career, especially on a West Coast offense-style team such as the 49ers.

Kingston earned a 74.0-plus PFF pass-blocking grade across all six seasons of his college career. The offensive lineman allowed just 17 quarterback pressures and one sack from 464 pass-blocking snaps in the 2023 season.

At the 2024 NFL scouting combine, Kingston ran the 40-yard dash in 5.02 seconds, along with 32 reps on the bench press – the second-most among his position group.

“I’m excited to learn from the guys and follow what they do day-in and day-out; What they do differently that sets them apart,” Kingston said in a 1-on-1 interview with team reporter Lindsey Pallares. “Especially future Hall of Fame offensive tackle Trent Williams, because the past five years I’ve watched Trent Williams probably the most out I’ve anyone in the NFL. It’d be really cool to get under his wing, learn from him and see what makes him so great.”

Kingston will most likely be the backup left guard behind Aaron Banks. The 49ers also picked Dominick Puni and Drake Nugent at interior offensive line positions in the 2024 NFL draft.

Instant analysis of 49ers 6th-round pick Jarrett Kingston

49ers 6th-round OL Jarrett Kingston played almost every position on the OL in college. So where will he play with San Francisco?

Near the end of Round 6 of the draft, the 49ers made another addition to their offensive line. With the 215th overall pick, San Francisco brought in USC offensive lineman Jarrett Kingston. During six college seasons, Kingston was a jack of all trades, master of none.

That experience at so many spots had to be a key selling point for San Francisco as they aim to add some quality depth along their offensive line. Whether Jackson will be able to play in the NFL remains to be seen, but his athleticism should allow him to at least be competitive in the quest to eventually earn a roster spot.

Chances are his first season is spent on the practice squad, where the 49ers hone his skill set at one position. His frame (6-4, 308 pounds with 32-inch arms) says he’ll be a guard in the NFL unless San Francisco wants to try playing him at center — the lone position he didn’t play in college.

If Kingston winds up being a quality, versatile offensive lineman, he could become a viable backup for a 49ers club that doesn’t have a ton of depth up front.

USC’s Jarrett Kingston surprisingly picked No. 215 by 49ers in NFL draft

Jarrett Kingston did not have a great 2023 season, but the 49ers saw something in him.

No one saw this one coming. USC offensive lineman Jarrett Kingston, who had a difficult 2023 season with the Trojans after transferring in from Washington State, was selected by the San Francisco 49ers with the No. 215 pick in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL draft on Saturday afternoon.

Kingston was part of an underachieving offensive line in 2023. That USC line caused Caleb Williams to scramble and improvise and make a lot of plays on his own. Caleb had to fend for himself far too often, lacking the structure and comfort he had in 2022 behind a much better offensive line which included Andrew Vorhees, Brett Neilon, and Bobby Haskins. Maybe some NFL analysts felt Kingston could sneak into the back end of the draft, but the idea that he would be drafted was hardly unanimous. What makes the selection extra surprising is that Kingston went off the NFL draft board before USC teammates Brenden Rice and Tahj Washington, two guys who both had much better 2023 seasons than Kingston and who seem to offer much more NFL upside than Kingston.

49ers add to OL, select USC G Jarrett Kingston in 6th round

The pick is in! It’s USC OL Jarrett Kingston to the #49ers with the 215th pick.

The 49ers made another addition to their offensive line late in this year’s draft. With the 215th overall pick San Francisco selected USC guard Jarrett Kingston.

Kingston played a lot of football across his six-year college career. He began his college time with Washington State where he played in 37 games with 26 starts. In his lone year with the Trojans after transferring he started 11 of the 12 games he played.

Impressively, Kingston started at four of the five spots on the offensive line. He started 16 games at left guard, 10 at left tackle, six at right guard and five at right tackle. Given his 6-4, 308-pound frame and relatively short arms (just over 32 inches) he’ll probably wind up sticking as a guard in the NFL.

He’s a good athlete with plenty of experience. His NFL future will rely on him settling at a position and honing his skill set there.
