Four potential Celtics depth options to shore up Boston’s frontcourt

With Kristaps Porzingis already showing signs of poor durability, another big man option is a wise target for the Celtics.

The Boston Celtics are facing a potential frontcourt availability concern as new Boston big man Kristaps Porzingis enters a rehabilitation process for his foot, recently diagnosed with plantar fasciitis serious enough to cause the Latvian center to eschew suiting up for his national team in the 2023 FIBA World Cup. Although the Celtics center is expected to be cleared for the start of the storied ball club’s 2023-24 training camp,

Porzingis’ injury history, including playing less than 65 games in the regular season in recent years, raises questions about his availability for a full 82-game season in Boston’s campaign to come. Considering the team’s other factors, such as veteran forward Al Horford’s age and Robert Williams III’s frequent absences to injury as well, it’s prudent for the Celtics to consider front-court additions.

To such an end, NESN’s Keagan Stiefel came up with four potential options that the Celtics can sign to shore up their frontcourt depth – let’s take a look at each.

The 10 best remaining free agents the Boston Celtics can sign

Let’s take a look at some of the best remaining free agents who the Celtics could consider signing.

The Boston Celtics are coming off a disappointing campaign that ended in elimination by the Miami Heat in the 2023 Eastern Conference Finals just when Boston hoped to get back to the NBA Finals. Since then, team president Brad Stevens has shaken up the roster by bringing on star big man Kristaps Porzingis while letting go of Marcus Smart and Grant Williams.

The team has made depth signings with Oshae Brissett and Dalano Banton, but the Celtics still need to address a few key areas. Chief among them is a point guard able to step into a bigger role if needed, but Boston now also needs depth at the guard, wing, forward, and big positions as well with between one and three roster spots pending team decisions on non-guaranteed players.

Let’s take a look at some of the best remaining free agents who the Celtics could consider signing on minimum deals to such an end.

In this exercise, we have omitted players who will likely earn more than a minimum deal given the Celtics’ proximity to the second apron.

Warriors’ JaMychal Green set to start in place of Kevon Looney in Game 2 vs. Lakers

The Warriors will start veteran JaMychal Green in Game 2 against the Lakers with Kevon Looney dealing with an illness.

The Golden State Warriors’ starting lineup will look different in Game 2 against the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday night at San Francisco’s Chase Center.

Instead of playoff standout Kevon Looney leading the frontcourt from the opening tip, JaMychal Green will slide into the starting lineup on Thursday night. While he won’t start due to an illness, he’s still expected to play in Game 2 against the Lakers.

Looney is coming off another 20-rebound performance in Game 1 against the Lakers on Tuesday. Looney has had 20 or more rebounds in four different games during the Warriors’ current playoff run. Looney has notched double-figure rebounding efforts in six consecutive games.

During the 2023 postseason, Green has played in four games, averaging 1.5 points on 28.6% shooting from the field in 5.6 minutes per contest. Green has only started one other game during the 2022-23 regular season.

The Warriors and Lakers will tip off Game 2 at 6 p.m. PT on Thursday night in San Francisco.

Alabama men’s basketball all-time roster: Crimson Tide Legends

The all-time greats of Alabama Crimson Tide basketball!

The annual NCAA men’s basketball tournament is rapidly approaching with Selection Sunday taking place on March 12. Alabama’s success this season has propelled the program into the national spotlight. The top-ranked seed is up for grabs and it may belong to the Crimson Tide.

Though Alabama is typically known for its accolades on the football field, the Crimson Tide has a rich history on the hardwood that spans decades and generations.

Numerous coaches and players have left their mark on the program for being especially outstanding.

Roll Tide Wire chose one head coach, two assistants and 10 players to make up the all-time roster. We tip it off with the head coach.

Alabama in NBA: How former Alabama MBB players are performing this season

Roll Tide Wire takes a look at Bama hoops at the professional level. The Crimson Tide are well-represented across the league.

The Alabama men’s basketball program has had a history of sending players to the league. Several that come to mind are Robert Horry, Mo Williams, and Latrell Sprewell. Recently, others have followed suit and are trying to create careers for themselves as well.

The first thing that an average sports fan would label with the word “Alabama” is the football program. However, Alabama basketball head coach Nate Oats has helped elevate the basketball program to new heights in the past few years.

He has helped players like Herb Jones, JD Davison, and Kira Lewis Jr. all reach the NBA.

Roll Tide Wire takes a look at how former Alabama players have performed in the NBA this season.

JaMychal Green makes NBA history with unique stat line

JaMychal Green’s recent performance was very rare in the NBA.

Former Alabama forward JaMychal Green left the Crimson Tide program in 2012 when he went undrafted in the NBA and played overseas before signing with the San Antonio Spurs in 2015.

Green has played for five different NBA franchises, with his fifth and current team being the Golden State Warriors.

Yesterday, Green became only “the 22nd player in NBA history to score at least 14 points on no more than five shots and zero made free throws in a game,” writes Mark Inabinett, of AL.com in a Tweet. “He went five-for-five from the floor, with four three-pointers.”

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Green and other former Alabama players now in the NBA.

NBA Twitter reacts to Warriors cruising to comeback win vs. Wizards, 135-126

Andrew Wiggins tallied a team-high 29 points as the Warriors cruised to a comeback win over the Wizards, 135-126.

Following back-to-back losses, the Golden State Warriors looked like they were headed towards another mark in the loss column after they fell to a 15-point deficit to the Washington Wizards in the second quarter.

However, the Warriors appeared to wake up in the second quarter behind Klay Thompson. The four-time champ tallied 13 points in the second quarter as the Warriors outscored the Wizards 42-27 to get back into the game and take the lead before halftime.

Once the Warriors grabbed the lead, they never looked back. Andrew Wiggins tallied a team-high 29 points on 12-of-22 shooting from the field with seven boards and four assists. Monday marked Wiggins’ third highest scoring performance of the season.

Both Kristaps Porzingis and Bradley Beal notched over 30 points, but it wasn’t enough to keep pace with the Warriors at Chase Center.

JaMychal Green provided a spark off the bench, scoring 14 points on a perfect 5-of-5 from the field and 4-of-4 from beyond the arc. Donte DiVincenzo added 17 points off the bench on the way to Golden State’s 135-126 win over Washington.

Following the Warriors impressive comeback win over the Wizards, the NBA community on Twitter responded with different reactions. Here’s a look at what fans and analysts were saying on Monday night.

Injury Report: Jonathan Kuminga, Andrew Wiggins, James Wiseman, JaMychal Green all out vs. Hawks on Monday

The Golden State Warriors will be missing multiple players due to injury on Monday against the Atlanta Hawks.

Despite riding a four-game winning streak at home, the Golden State Warriors’ injury report continues to grow. For Monday’s contest against the Atlanta Hawks, the Warriors will be without five players from the rotation.

After missing 13 consecutive games due to an adductor injury and an illness, Andrew Wiggins is expected to remain out on Monday against the Hawks. James Wiseman (ankle), JaMychal Green (lower leg infection) and Steph Curry (shoulder) will also remain out against the Hawks.

The latest member of the Warriors to join the injury report is Jonathan Kuminga. The second-year forward will miss Monday’s contest at San Francisco’s Chase Center due to a right foot sprain.

Via @anthonyVslater on Twitter:

With multiple players missing due to injury, Kuminga has played a significant role in Golden State’s rotation during the recent stretch. Along with helping spark the Warriors’ defense, Kuminga has tallied nine or more points in his last three games. During Golden State’s four-game win streak, Kuminga is averaging 9.8 points on 56% shooting from the field with 4.3 rebounds, 3.5 assists and one steal in 21.7 minutes per game.

With Kuminga and four others expected to be out for Monday’s game, Steve Kerr will have to get creative with his rotation against the Hawks. Rookie Patrick Baldwin Jr. could likely have an extended role along with players like Ty Jerome, Anthony Lamb and Moses Moody.

Kerr will likely lean on Jordan Poole, Draymond Green, Klay Thompson and Kevon Looney against All-Star guard Trae Young and the Hawks.

The Warriors are slated to host the Hawks at 7 p.m. PT on Monday evening at Chase Center.

Injury Report: Donte DiVincenzo (non-COVID illness), JaMychal Green (healthy and safety protocols) out vs. Knicks

Donte DiVincenzo and JaMychal Green have been added to the injury report for the Warriors’ tilt against the Knicks on Tuesday.

To start the second leg of a road back-to-back, the Golden State Warriors will be without a group of core contributors on Tuesday night against the New York Knicks.

With Andrew Wiggins (adductor) and Steph Curry (shoulder) already out, the Golden State Warriors will also be missing Donte DiVincenzo and JaMychal Green at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday. DiVencenzo has been ruled out due to a non-COVID related illness and Green will miss Tuesday’s game due to the health and safety protocol.

Via @anthonyVslater on Twitter:

Due to Golden State’s stretch of injuries, DiVincenzo has entered the starting lineup over the last three games. During that span, the Villanova product has helped provide scoring, tallying 15 or more points in two of his last three games.

Green is coming off one his highest-scoring performances of the season with 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field in Golden State’s win over the Toronto Raptors on Sunday.

Without four key pieces, Golden State’s young core will likely get a chance to play on Tuesday against the Knicks. Jonathan Kuminga, Moses Moody, Patrick Baldwin Jr., Ryan Rollins and James Wiseman could be involved in the Warriors’ rotation in New York.

The Warriors will meet the streaking Knicks at 4:30 p.m. PT on Tuesday evening in the Big Apple.

JJ Redick on why he’s not giving up on the Warriors’ bench

J.J. Redick explains why he’s still ‘bullish’ on the Warriors’ bench players.

The Golden State Warriors’ starting five has been brilliant statistically through the first few weeks of the season, led by MVP-caliber production from Steph Curry. When the team’s stars sit down, it has struggled mightily. Poor play from the Warriors’ second unit has contributed to a 4-7 start that has Golden State outside of play-in position.

According to JJ Redick, though, it’s too soon to panic for Steve Kerr and Warriors faithful. On his podcast, Redick argued the Warriors have the right pieces on the bench, but the team needs to be patient as young players develop and veterans shake off the rust.

“They’re just two games out of the play-in, we’re 10 games in to the season, they’re just 4.5 games out of first place. There’s no reason to panic, and you have to assume the rotation shortens in the playoffs.

Now, for those three young guys I mentioned: Moses Moody, Jonathan Kuminga, James Wiseman — you would assume they would get better throughout the season. Wiseman hasn’t played in two years … especially defensively, his feel for the NBA is just not great. It’s just not great.

Then you look at the rest of their bench. Guys that really should be contributing. JaMychal Green has been a key contributor on a number of teams. Donte DiVincenzo has been a key contributor on the Bucks pre-injury. He’s been bad as well, and he hasn’t played a ton. So you would expect those two guys specifically to work their way in.

The one guy that has been a little bit of a surprise, because he’s basically been tossed around already in his young career, is Ty Jerome. And now his advanced numbers aren’t great, but he’s had some really good moments. I’m still bullish on the bench, if that makes sense, because I think there’s still improvement from the young guys. I think Green and DiVincenzo figure it out. I think Ty Jerome is in a great spot and a great fit for him. So I think eventually this self-corrects a bit.”
