Jamie Newman waived by Philadelphia Eagles

Former Georgia quarterback and undrafted NFL free agent Jamie Newman has been waived by the Philadelphia Eagles. Details here.

Former Wake Forrest quarterback Jamie Newman has been waived by the NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles.

Newman, who transferred to UGA football as a graduate transfer from Wake Forest before the 2020 season, later decided to opt-out of his senior year due to COVID-19 concerns.

The Graham, N.C., native declared for the 2021 NFL draft and signed with the Philadelphia Eagles as an undrafted free agent.

Newman was one of the top-rated quarterbacks headed into the 2020 college football season, according to Pro Football Focus.

In 2019, Newman completed 220 of 361 passes (60.9%) for 2,868 yards, 26 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, while leading the Demon Deacons to and 8-5 record.

DawgNation shouldn’t blame Newman for making the best decision for himself, especially in the midst of all of the unknowns of a global pandemic, but you can’t help but wonder if Newman’s NFL track would have been different if he had played in Athens last season.

Georgia football loses experience, play-making ability with quarterback Jamie Newman’s decision to opt-out of the 2020 CFB season

UGA quarterback Jamie Newman has decided to opt-out of the 2020 CFB season. How does Georgia replace his experience? Analysis here.

Just when things may be looking normal soon with the 2020 SEC football season just weeks away, Georgia suffers a huge blow to their offense, which was already facing a rebuild of sorts.

Bulldogs quarterback Jamie Newman decides to opt-out of the 2020 college football season.

Now, not only will Georgia be unveiling a different scheme under new offensive coordinator Todd Monken while working to replace four starters on the offensive line, but coach Smart and staff will also have to groom a new signal caller out of an inexperienced quarterback room.

I certainly don’t blame Newman for making a decision that he feels will be best for him in the long run.

The NCAA has granted athletes the option to opt-out, remain on scholarship and return for another year – extending eligibility for kids who feel  playing with the risks involved amid the Covid-19 pandemic outweigh the few reasons to play.

Newman has been projected to be drafted as high as the first-round of next year’s draft.

He trails only Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence and Ohio State’s Justin Fields as the highest-graded returning quarterback in college football, according to Pro Football Focus.

Newman was also named as the No. 1 quarterback in touchdown’s versus the blitz by PFF.

In 2019, at Wake Forest, Newman threw for 2,686 yards with 26 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, while adding 574 yards on the ground with six rushing touchdowns.

Besides Newman’s play-making ability, experience is what the Bulldogs are losing – perhaps now the most glaring hole in Georgia’s 2020 offense.

USC transfer quarterback J.T. Daniels does have 2,672 yards and year under his belt at USC, but he will have to learn to make plays in high-pressure SEC games while proving himself to the Georgia lockeroom. And he still isn’t technically cleared to play yet – although he has practiced.

Redshirt freshman D’Wan Mathis is coming off of brain surgery in 2019, but has returned to football activities. Former Georgia star quarterback Aaron Murray recently said Mathis was extremely impressive when he saw him at a practice in 2018.

The Bulldogs quarterback competition will now be at the forefront of everyone’s minds, especially with such big time games early in Georgia’s SEC-only schedule.

After going to Arkansas and facing Tennessee in Athens, Georgia will face Kentucky, Auburn, Alabama and Florida in consecutive games. An incredibly tough stretch for any team – especially one with an inexperienced signal caller.

Twitter reacts to Georgia quarterback Jamie Newman’s decision to opt-out of the 2020 CFB season

Here is how UGA Twitter reacted to the recent news of Georgia quarterback Jamie Newman’s decision to opt-out of the 2020 CFB season.

Wow, that stings. Georgia’s new heralded gunslinger Jamie Newman has decided to opt-out of the 2020 college football season and will be preparing for the 2021 NFL Draft.

Can’t say I don’t blame him for doing so, but that doesn’t make it any easier to swollow.

We were excited to say the least when Newman chose to finish his collegiate career at Georgia. And all we’ve heard this summer is about how Newman was one of the top returning quarterbacks in college football, so losing him just weeks before the opening is disheartening.

Here is how UGA Twitter reacted to the recent news:

Watch: Highlights from Georgia football’s first preseason practice

Georgia football took the field Monday for their first preseason practice of the season. Injury list and highlights here

Finally, Georgia football is back on the field! The practice field yes, but a field nonetheless.

Because media members were not allowed to watch Monday’s first preseason practice due to safety concerns, the program released this video clip highlighting a few key players like transfer quarterback Jamie Newman and highly touted freshman offensive lineman Broderick Jones.

Jamie Newman, Broderick Jones, James Cook, Nolan Smith, Jordan Davis and Richard LeCounte are just a few of the guys we can see in action here.

A few guys, however, did have to miss practice one due to injury.

Georgia coach Kirby Smart said in a press conference Sunday night that senior inside linebacker Monty Rice is limited with a foot injury, but ‘he’s taken a lot of reps and played a bunch.’

Also despite recent reports that he was cleared to resume practice, sophomore wide receiver Dominick Blaylock is still restricted due to an ACL tear suffered last season.

Smart said, “He is not completely clear to practice or play, he is going to have a black shirt on .”

Here is the full injury list for week one of preseason practice.

WR Dominick Blaylock (knee)

QB JT Daniels (knee)

LB Monty Rice (foot)

WR Arian Smith (knee)

DB Kelee Ringo (shoulder)

PFF: Georgia QB Jamie Newman No. 1 among Power 5 in TDs versus the blitz

PFF released a stat which lists new Georgia QB Jamie Newman as the No. 1 in TDs versus the blitz among power 5 QBs. Read our analysis here!

Pro Football Focus (PFF) recently released a graphic showing Wake Forest transfer quarterback, new Georgia signal caller Jamie Newman as first among all power five quarterbacks in touchdowns versus the blitz.

It seems as if every month we learn of a new stat that shows Newman as one of the top quarterbacks returning for the 2020 college football season.

Early this year, PFF listed Newman as the No. 3 returning quarterback in college football behind Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence and Ohio State’s Justin Fields and rated Newman as the highest graded passer on throws of 30 yards or more.

What we’ve learned from these advanced stats from PFF is that Newman is not only a 500 yard rusher, but he’s also got a cannon for an arm, which he’s not afraid to let loose with pressure in his face.

With star receiver George Pickens on the outside and running backs Zamir White and James Cook out of the backfield, Newman should have every opportunity to stretch the field in Georgia’s 2020 offense.

Of course, there are still some remaining questions about the offensive line rebuild and new offensive coordinator Todd Monken’s system translating, but there is no questioning the quality in talent that coach Kirby Smart and staff have put together on this offense for 2020.

Don’t overlook UGA football’s academic accomplishments

The Georgia Bulldogs football team had a great 2019 season, but that shouldn’t be overshadowed by the group’s accomplishments off the field.

The Georgia Bulldogs football team had a great 2019 season, but that shouldn’t be overshadowed by the group’s accomplishments off the field.

Earlier in May, the 2019-2020 academic year came to a close and numerous football student-athletes graduated from the University of Georgia:

It was an unusual year for students, especially seniors, who had to finish their academic careers with virtual classes. Fortunately, graduation is scheduled for numerous graduates of the spring class of 2020 for Friday, October 16th at 6:30. The ceremony will be held between the hedges at Sanford Stadium.

The Georgia Bulldog football team plays at Missouri the next day. Just because players don’t finish their degree during their playing days doesn’t mean that they can’t finish the drill later on in their life:

Georgia football and Kirby Smart have landed a key graduate transfer in quarterback Jamie Newman. Newman is eligible immediately thanks to his graduation for Wake Forest.

The student-athlete debate will roar on with the NCAA, but there’s definitely value in getting a degree from college. The majority of Georgia football players don’t have lengthy careers in the NFL.

In fact, Georgia football combine for their highest average GPA ever: a 3.02 GPA this spring semester.

David Pollack thinks Georgia QB Jamie Newman will be 1st round pick

Georgia Bulldogs legend David Pollack thinks current UGA quarterback Jamie Newman will be a first round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft

Georgia Bulldogs legend David Pollack thinks current UGA quarterback Jamie Newman will be a first round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Pollack, an ESPN College Football GameDay analyst, made the College Football Hall of Fame earlier this offseason.

The 2021 NFL Draft featured four quarterbacks selected in the first round (seven went before Jake Fromm). Kellen Mond, Trevor Lawrence, Justin Fields, Kyle Trask, Jamie Newman, and Mac Jones are among potential first round QBs in 2021. Of course forecasting first round QBs this far in advance is tough to predict. Nobody was projecting Joe Burrow to be a first round pick before the 2019 season.

Here’s what David Pollack had to say about Wake Forest transfer Jamie Newman:

Newman has the potential to be a first round QB. NFL teams value quarterbacks with mobility more than ever. Newman will have to clean up his mistakes, but he’ll be surrounded by more talent than ever in Athens. Newman threw 11 interceptions last season to go along with 32 total touchdowns.

Newman’s experience at Wake Forest will be a plus for him. He went up against plenty of talented defenses during his time in the ACC. He’ll have a chance to boost his draft slot playing behind the best offensive line he’s ever had.

If Newman ends up as a first round pick, then that’s good news for Bulldog fans, who just saw Jake Fromm go in the fifth round. Will Jamie Newman be Georgia’s first QB selected in the first round since Matthew Stafford in 2009?

Watch: UGA’s Jamie Newman shows off arm in Wake Forest highlights

UGA football’s Jamie Newman is a talented deep ball thrower and is expected to make an instant impact for the Georgia Bulldogs in 2020.

The Georgia Bulldogs have landed the top transfer quarterback in the country: Wake Forest’s Jamie Newman. It is about time the Dawgs landed a talented transfer QB after losing Justin Fields and Jacob Eason.

Newman scored 32 total touchdowns last season across twelve games (he missed the Florida State game with a shoulder injury). He is a great deep ball thrower. Newman had talented receivers at Wake Forest, but it’s not as dynamic as Georgia’s deep, talented offensive attack. Newman should help UGA get the ball down the field more in 2020.

Newman made his transfer announcement official in January via Twitter. He and four-star freshman quarterback Carson Beck will compete for the starting job this spring. Newman is the favorite to win the position battle and is being bet on as a Heisman dark horse.

Newman’s 2019 season at Wake Forest was solid for their standards. Newman helped the Demon Deacons go 8-5 en route to a 27-21 defeat against Michigan State in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl. Newman and the Demon Deacons averaged 31.8 points per game last season, which is more the UGA’s 30.8 points per game average.

Newman went 3-1 in 2018 as a starter. He won his first career start at No. 14 NC State, when he led the Deacons to a come-from-behind 27-23 win with game-winning 2-minute drill. He had 13 total TDs and four interceptions in 2018.

Highlight video is per Stadium:

Newman’s deep passing certainly stands out. He also has the wheels to be forced to be accounted for in the run game. UGA will run more RPO’s this season. Teams can no longer discount the QB when UGA runs the football. Newman’s rushing ability should help the Dawgs convert at a higher clip in the red zone.

Newman had pretty solid protection on most of his accurate deep throws. Georgia’s offensive linemen in 2019, who are still with the team in 2020, graded much better with PFF. Newman’s first big challenge will be at Alabama in week three.
