Only days after signing former Houston Texans starter Jonathan Owens, the Green Bay Packers released safety James Wiggins.

Wiggins is a 2021 seventh-round pick of the Arizona Cardinals who signed with the Packers in January. He was part of a group of 13 players to sign futures deals.

Owens, a 17-game starter for Houston last season, signed with the Packers on Friday.

The result of the swap — Owens for Wiggins — leaves the Packers with eight safeties on the roster (or nine if hybrid linebacker-safety Tariq Carpenter is included).

The Packers briefly changed Wiggins’ number to No. 31, or the same uniform number of Adrian Amos, who remains unsigned.

Releasing Wiggins opens up a spot on the team’s 90-man roster.

Browns tryout 3 safeties including Cincinnati Bearcats standout James Wiggins

The Browns had three safeties in for tryouts today, including former Cincinnati Bearcat James Wiggins

The secondary that is currently playing defense off of the coast of Lake Erie, and the Cleveland Browns may have had enough of it. Today, the Browns had three safeties in for tryouts, according to the league’s transaction memo. The most notable name of these tryouts was former Cincinnati Bearcats standout James Wiggins.

With the Baltimore Ravens up next in just two days, the Cleveland defense needs to turn it around to attempt to save their season. While these tryouts will not help that cause this week, the Browns bringing in three of one position is certainly a sign of displeasure.

We take a look at the three names here.

Chiefs make a pair of moves on the practice squad

The #Chiefs terminated the practice squad contract of a former Kansas Jayhawk in order to make room for S James Wiggins.

The Kansas City Chiefs have made a pair of moves on the practice squad ahead of Week 1 of the NFL season.

The team has officially signed S James Wiggins after hosting him on a successful tryout on Monday. A former seventh-round draft pick by the Cardinals in 2021, Wiggins spent a portion of last season on the practice squad and then was elevated to the active roster in Arizona. He finished the year on injured reserve with a knee injury. Wiggins was released during 53-man roster cuts this season, mostly due to the Cardinals having good depth at safety.

Wiggins was a former teammate of Chiefs rookie S Bryan Cook at the University of Cincinnati. They spent two seasons together, though Cook was ineligible to play for one of those seasons. If healthy, Wiggins has the potential to be a contributor in Kansas City, especially on special teams.

In order to make room for Wiggins on the practice squad, the Chiefs released DE Azur Kamara. The former Kansas Jayhawk was a late addition to the offseason roster this year, but had a solid preseason in Kansas City with one sack and four total pressures. Unfortunately, with six defensive ends already on the 53-man roster, Kamara’s spot on the practice squad became somewhat expendable for the Chiefs.

The team still hasn’t made a corresponding move on the 53-man roster with Blake Bell heading to injured reserve. It’s possible that they might wait until after the first week of the season as a mechanism to avoid guaranteeing a contract of a vested player. The Chiefs can still elevate two players from the practice squad via standard elevation for Week 1 if necessary so that they have a full slate of players to choose from.

Chiefs working out former Cardinals S James Wiggins

The #Chiefs are working out a former seventh-round draft pick by the #Cardinals per report.

The Kansas City Chiefs are working out a player released by the Arizona Cardinals during 53-man roster cuts.

According to Pro Football Network’s Aaron Wilson, the Chiefs are working out former Cardinals safety James Wiggins. A former seventh-round draft pick out of the University of Cincinnati in 2021, Wiggins spent a chunk of last season on the practice squad in Arizona. He was promoted to the 53-man roster in mid-October, appearing in three games and recording no statistics.

He finished the season on injured reserve after he suffered a knee injury in punt coverage against the Green Bay Packers.

Wiggins (6-foot and 205 pounds) was waived by the Cardinals during their 53-man roster cuts. Obviously, the first thought here is that Kansas City is seeking intel on their Week 1 opponent, but that’s always overblown when it comes to things like this.

Wiggins projects as a multi-phase special teamer with upside as a depth safety. Chiefs GM Brett Veach mentioned they’d be bringing some players in to work them out ahead of the 2022 NFL season. It’s possible they add him to the practice squad with a successful workout. It’s also possible they’re simply doing their diligence on a player they liked when he was coming out of college.

Update: Wiggins will sign to the Chiefs’ practice squad per Wilson.

Cardinals to cut S James Wiggins

The Cardinals hope to bring back the 2021 seventh-round pick back to the practice squad.

The Arizona Cardinals’ 53-man roster is taking shape with more player cuts getting announced. According to PFF’s Doug Kyed, the Cardinals are releasing safety James Wiggins.

It is believed that, if he clears waivers, he will be re-signed to the practice squad.

Wiggins was drafted by the Cardinals in the seventh round a year ago out of Cincinnati. He did not initially make the roster last year, either. However, he did make the practice squad and appeared in three games, playing on special teams, before suffering a season-ending knee injury.

He played a lot in the preseason and had ups and downs, but the team is high on his future as a special teams player on punt team.

With Wiggins’ release, it opens the door for perhaps Tae Daley to make the team at safety.
