Is CB Jamel Dean ready for a breakout season in 2020?

Find out why Tampa Bay Buccaneers second-year cornerback Jamel Dean could be in for a big year in 2020.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers defense will need to play up to par with its high-powered offense if this team is going to end its playoff drought that’s stretched for more than a decade.

While Tampa Bay boasted the league’s best run defense in 2019, their secondary got off to a slow start, and despite finishing strong in the second half of the year, the pass defense finished 30th in the league.

Bucs defensive coordinator Todd Bowles is hoping his young players can make a big jump in Year 2 in his system, and one player who will be looked upon to be a major contributor is second-year cornerback Jamel Dean.

Dean had a nightmare debut in his first start last season on the road in Seattle, but over at ESPN.com, Rivers McCown had Dean ranked No. 4 on his list of the top 25 young prospects ready for breakout years in 2020.

Per McCown:

“In Dean’s first NFL action against Seattle in Week 9, he allowed 155 yards on targets in his coverage, including 81 alone on two DK Metcalf bombs. The rest of the season, Dean was targeted 30 times and allowed 107 total yards. That includes holding his targets to 0 yards against Arizona, 38 in two games against Atlanta, and 28 against Houston. He also picked off Deshaun Watson and Kyler Murray.

“Scouts liked Dean’s size and speed coming out of Auburn but were concerned about his multiple high school and college knee surgeries. His 4.3 40-yard dash at the combine seemed to assuage a lot of those fears. The Bucs were a terrific landing spot for him precisely because of how much aggressive coverage Todd Bowles plays, but anyone who can play outside corner as well as Dean played for the last seven weeks of the season deserves to raise some alarm bells.”

Dean and fellow cornerback Sean Murphy-Bunting both seem poised for big years, and the addition of rookie safety Antoine Winfield Jr. should add further athleticism and speed to this young defensive unit.

3 Buccaneers players who could have breakout seasons in 2020

See which Buccaneers players could be poised for breakout years in 2020.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will enter the 2020 season with championship expectations after their major offseason signing of six-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady.

The Hall of Fame bound quarterback brings with him a wealth of experience that this locker room desperately needs. With a hot offense and solid defense, Tampa Bay could be true contenders this season in the NFC.

But while guys like Brady and Rob Gronkowski, along with fellow Pro Bowlers Mike Evans and Chis Godwin, will receive most of the attention this season, there are a number of other Bucs players who may be in store for breakout seasons in 2020.

Let’s take a look at three likely candidates.

The NFL’s 11 best outside cornerbacks

Boundary cornerbacks who can erase an opponent’s best receiver are more important than ever. Here are the NFL’s 11 best.

Let’s say you’re an NFL team, and you need a bunch of really good cornerbacks. Step one, of course, is determining which characteristics define your version of that ideal. Last season, the Chargers led the NFL by playing 75% zone coverage, so their definitions are going to be different than the ones the Patriots come up with — because the Patriots played man coverage on 54% of their snaps. Only the Lions played more man coverage, and the extent to which the Lions failed to do so at a competent level implies that perhaps they weren’t exact enough with their definitions.

Add in the fact that teams are playing more dime than base defense these days (20.9% dime to 18% base), and it’s an NFL that demands more cornerbacks, and more of those cornerbacks, than ever before. It used to be enough to press up against your receiver and work him to the boundary; now, you may have to move from zone to man to combo with different numbers of defensive backs around you. And you’re doing that against offenses that present more receivers in more complex formations and route concepts than ever before.

The outside cornerback position has never been more valuable than it is now as a result, and here are the 11 best at the position as we head into the 2020 season.

Honorable Mentions

Assembling a list of the NFL’s 11 best outside cornerbacks in 2020 is a brutal exercise, because there are so many good cornerbacks in the NFL out of necessity. There were instances in which the players fell just short of the 50-target limit — our apologies to Jason McCourty of the Patriots and Jimmy Smith of the Ravens, who each had 49 targets (including the postseason) and would have challenged for the top 11 with an extra rep or two. Sidney Jones of the Eagles and Jamel Dean of the Buccaneers are two younger players who also didn’t make the target limit, but are excellent talents on the rise. In other instances, overall coverage numbers represented a primary focus on the slot, and while guys like Brian Poole of the Jets, Marlon Humphrey of the Ravens, K’Waun Williams of the 49ers, and D.J. Hayden of the Jaguars also played well outside to a point, it wasn’t their primary focus. So, you’ll find all of those guys on our list of the NFL’s top 11 slot defenders.

There were other cases in which cornerbacks had high interception totals and good overall charting stats, but their touchdowns allowed (stats backed up by tape study) got in the way. So it was for Pittsburgh’s Joe Haden, who allowed 49 catches on 79 targets for 468 yards, 139 yards after the catch, had five interceptions, and allowed an opponent passer rating of 70.0… but also allowed six touchdowns. Marcus Peters of the Ravens barely made this list because of a similar touchdown problem, but the negative plays he did create for opposing offenses were frequent and important enough to be considered.

It’s family bonding time for Bucs CB Jamel Dean

Jamel Dean of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers celebrated the Fourth of July with a little family bonding time in Florida.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Jamel Dean had some growing pains at times during his rookie season in 2019, but he’ll be looked upon to be a major contributor in 2020.

The Bucs’ young secondary finished near the bottom of the league last season in pass defense, but defensive coordinator Todd Bowles should have this unit playing at a higher level this season after a year of experience under their belts.

Training camp is set to get underway in a few short weeks, so Dean, like others, decided to kick back and relax this July 4th weekend with some family.

Take a look at some of his Instagram posts from over the weekend.

Adam Rank’s choice for the Bucs’ 2020 breakout star might surprise you

See who Adam Rank over at NFL.com believes will be the breakout star for the Bucs this season.

As excited as people are to see the new-look Buccaneers in action with Tom Brady, the fact remains that the Bucs’ pass defense needs to step up this season if the team is going to make a serious run at the postseason.

Tampa Bay’s defense allowed 270.1 passing yards per game last season, 30th in the league. The team drafted safety Antoine Winfield Jr. in the second round of April’s draft, hoping to add another young, versatile piece to their defensive puzzle.

Tampa Bay has worked hard the past few drafts to improve their secondary, and according to Adam Rank of NFL.com, one of their recent draft picks could be a breakout star in 2020. In his piece looking at the state of the Bucs franchise heading into the season, Rank chose 2019 third-round pick Jamel Dean as his potential star for Tampa Bay.

Per Rank:

“He made his debut later in the season against the Seattle Seahawks when he started for the injured Carlton Davis III. It didn’t go well. He gave up three touchdown passes and yeah, that was the good part. But he did play well down the stretch and the Bucs’ defense really started to excel in the secondary. He could take another big step this season.”

Dean’s game against the Seahawks was a forgettable one, but to his credit he didn’t succumb to the criticism. Dean and fellow cornerback Sean Murphy-Bunting showed flashes of what they are capable of in their rookie seasons. Now, with a year of experience under their belts, they’ll be looked upon to help further carry this secondary going forward.

Eagles’ RB Miles Sanders omitted from PFF’s list of the top-50 NFL rookies through Week 17

Miles Sanders omitted from PFF list of the top-50 NFL rookies through Week 17

Miles Sanders is one of the most dynamic players in the NFL, he’s helped carry the Philadelphia Eagles to a division title and he should win the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year award.

Without all of those accolades and accomplishments this season, Sanders was somehow omitted from Pro Football Focus’s list of the top-50 NFL rookies through Week 17.

That’s correct, even as Sanders shatters Eagles rookie records and cements his status in Philadelphia for years to come, 50 other rookies, some not as dynamic or as impressive, earned a spot on the list according to PFF.

The running backs on the list included, the Raiders Josh Jacobs, who was No. 4 on the list. Other running backs included David Montgomery (No. 37) and the Bills Devin Singletary, who was No. 45 on the list.
