The Clemson Insider was on hand to see a four-star linebacker commit play on the second stop of this year’s Tour of Champions. Hoschton (Ga.) Mill Creek’s Jamal Anderson recorded 4.5 tackles, two quarterback pressures and a quarterback hit in his team’s 52-36 win over Cedar Grove (Ellenwood, Ga.) as the Hawks improved to 4-0 on the season.

TCI had a chance to catch up with Anderson following his team’s 16-point win Friday night.

“It was a great win — definitely a great team win,” Anderson said postgame. “I know going into this game, we knew Cedar Grove would be really fast and physical and that we had to match their style of play and outdo them on it. I think we just came to play, out-physicaled them and wanted it more. We got the win. It was a great team win.”

Anderson, who was a significant factor in Friday’s contest, provided standout coverage against a talented Cedar Grove team. The Saints operated their offense knowing where Anderson was on the field at all times. While it might not have shown up in the box score, he made his presence known all night.

“It’s been great. It’s been really fun,” Anderson said when asked about the start of his senior season. “It’s good being a leader out there, making sure my teammates know we’re gonna always have a leader on their side. It’s been great.”

Prior to Anderson’s senior campaign, he verbally pledged to Dabo Swinney’s program. It’s fair to say that the standout Peach State linebacker is loving life as a Clemson commit.

“It’s been great,” he said. “It’s just a blessing from God to be able to go to Clemson. It’s been my dream school for a while now, so I’m very thankful.”

A lot of that has to do with the job that Wesley Goodwin did in recruiting him.

“I like him a lot, to be honest,” Anderson said of Clemson’s defensive coordinator/linebackers coach. “Obviously, I talked to Coach (Brent) Venables when he was there. When he left, from the day (Coach Goodwin) transitioned in, I started a relationship with him. He texted me as soon as he got the job. I appreciated that a lot. Then he took a shot offering me — I appreciate him for that. And then along with that, I text him every day, we talk a lot and keep in communication. I’m just very thankful for him.”

“He definitely made it feel like that was the school to be at,” Anderson added.

So, what was it that ultimately sold Anderson on Clemson?

“It was definitely the family environment and just the idea that people have your back behind just football, but also as a person,” he said. “They’re always gonna be there for you.”

Anderson will be back in The Valley for Clemson’s first night game of the season versus Louisiana Tech on Saturday at Memorial Stadium. He’s estimated that he’s been to at least four or five Clemson game days in the past, but Saturday’s contest will offer a different experience, with the new amenities that the Tigers have added to their home field in the past year.

Anderson will “for sure” be going to plenty of home games in Death Valley this season.

Before he officially heads off to Clemson in January as a mid-year enrollee, Anderson is hoping to soak up his last moments as a high schooler.

“I definitely just want to leave a legacy of being a good person and a good player on the field,” Anderson said. “And just to make sure that kids below me will hopefully grow up to be like me, make big plays and go to Clemson.”

HOSCHTON, Ga. — One of Clemson’s four-star linebacker commits shined in a big-time win Friday night.

Mill Creek’s Jamal Anderson accounted for 4.5 tackles, two quarterback pressures and a QB hit, along with some staunch coverage in his team’s 52-36 win over Ellenwood (Ga.) Cedar Grove.

Both teams entered Friday night’s contest undefeated and yet the game was never close.

After scoring a touchdown and converting on a two-point conversion in the second quarter, Cedar Grove was down by one score (21-14). The ensuing kickoff was returned by Mill Creek for a 94-yard touchdown and effectively took away any momentum that the Saints had built to get the game within one possession.

Mill Creek went into halftime leading 38-21, thanks in part to the defensive performance of Anderson. The Hawks never squandered their lead.

Clemson football 2023 recruiting class tracker

Clemson football is on a recruiting tear. Check out the Tigers 2023 class so far.

Updated 8/9

We are in full swing with the 2023 recruiting cycle, with this past month being a busy one for Dabo Swinney and the Clemson football program.

There have been ups and downs during the process, but the Tigers have had a great start in the 23′ class. Though the team has dealt with decommitments from four-star wide receiver Nathanial Joseph and three-star tight end Reid Mikeska, Clemson still ranks among the top of 247Sports 2023 recruit team rankings.

According to the 247Sports rankings, Friday’s addition of five-star defensive lineman Peter Woods has pushed Clemson up to the No.3 ranked class in the country with eleven commits and 260.28 total points.

Swinney and the Tigers are one of the hottest teams on the recruiting trail right now after snagging Woods from his home state and power house program, Alabama.

Here is a look at the Tigers’ current 2023 class with their 247Sports composite ranking:

Three-star linebacker puts Clemson in top eight

With two linebacker commits already in its 2023 class, Clemson remains in the mix for a three-star linebacker prospect.

Clemson is in the mix for a three-star linebacker prospect.

Marcellius Pulliam took to Twitter on Sunday to announce his top eight schools. The class of 2023 recruit will choose between Clemson, Auburn, Miami, Kentucky, Louisville, Georgia Tech, Indiana and Mississippi State.

A Sandy Creek High School (Tyrone, Ga.) product, Pulliam is the No. 49 linebacker prospect in the class of 2023, according to On3 Consensus rankings.

On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine gives Auburn the edge to land Pulliam, with Kentucky and Miami right behind.

As of Monday, Clemson has 20 verbal commitments in its 2023 class, including two from linebackers Jamal Anderson and Dee Crayton.

Where is Clemson in ESPN’s latest 2023 recruiting class rankings?

ESPN this week released its latest 2023 college football recruiting class rankings (subscription required).

Clemson’s 2023 class is currently ranked No. 6 by ESPN, behind Notre Dame, Ohio State, Texas, Georgia and Penn State, in that order.

The Tigers, who were previously ranked No. 4 in ESPN’s 2023 recruiting class rankings, have seven ESPN 300 commits out of their 17 total pledges.

Birmingham (Ala.) Briarwood Christian School quarterback Christopher Vizzina is Clemson’s top-rated offensive commit, checking in at No. 40 overall in the ESPN 300 rankings, while Alabaster (Ala.) Thompson defensive tackle Peter Woods is the Tigers’ top defensive commit at No. 9 overall in the ESPN 300.

Here’s what ESPN staff writer Craig Haubert had to say about Clemson’s 2023 class:

Trevor Lawrence set a high bar, and replacing him is not easy, but the Tigers continue to add talented options under center. They signed the No. 2 overall quarterback in the 2022 cycle in Cade Klubnik and now landed ESPN 300 signal-caller Vizzina, a strong-armed, accurate and poised passer. Four-star WR Noble Johnson is a nice-sized target who is capable of creating problems with good explosiveness and the ability to break tackles after the catch. In the trenches, the Tigers have secured some very good talent. Offensively, Harris Sewell was a great pickup out of Texas. He is a flexible big man with good mobility who is also a physical finisher and should develop into a strong asset to the Tigers’ ground attack. The Tigers have recruited very well along the defensive line under Dabo Swinney. Woods was a huge get out of Alabama powerhouse program Thompson. One of the most explosive and disruptive DLs in the class, he reminds us of current Clemson standout DL Tyler Davis. David Ojiegbe is a powerful player who can be tough versus the run, and Vic Burley was a big win on the recruiting trail, as he is a multisport athlete in high school with good explosiveness and upside. At linebacker, Jamal Anderson is a rangy defender who can be a sideline-to-sideline presence.

Arkansas, LSU, Alabama and Tennessee round out the top 10 in ESPN’s 2023 recruiting class rankings, respectively, with Miami (No. 11) currently having the second highest-ranked class in the ACC behind Clemson.

The other ACC teams in the top 25 of ESPN’s 2023 recruiting class rankings are Louisville (No. 17) and North Carolina (No. 19).

Clemson’s 2023 class currently ranks No. 5 nationally by Rivals and No. 7 by 247Sports.

Come out to support Clemson baseball at Dear Old Clemson’s event which is set for September 30 at the Owen Pavilion.  New head coach Erik Bakich will be on hand as will next year’s baseball team.  If you sign up for certain club levels you get free access to all Dear Old Clemson events or purchase your tickets today at Dear Old Clemson.

5-star recruiter: New Clemson commits rave about Goodwin

Wesley Goodwin deserves his due.

Clemson’s defensive coordinator waited in the wings. He was Brent Venables’ right-hand man for years. He’s as sharp as they come and one of the soundest defensive minds in the sport, but when he was hired, there were questions about his ability to recruit.

Needless to say, they’ve already been answered.

After signing a trio of linebackers in the class of 2022 — Jesuit (Tampa, Fla.) three-star Wade Woodaz, Gaither (Tampa, Fla.) three-star Kobe McCloud and Montgomery (Ala.) Catholic four-star TJ Dudley — Goodwin had his work cut out for him when it came to the rising seniors in the class of 2023.

And to say he did some heavy-lifting would be an understatement.

Clemson has received verbal commitments from two top linebacker prospects in the class of 2023.

Both Mill Creek (Hoschton, Ga.) four-star Jamal Anderson and Denmark (Alpharetta, Ga.) four-star Dee Crayton verbally pledged to the Tigers after officially visiting Clemson earlier this month.

Anderson (6-4, 200) is ranked as high as the No. 10 outside linebacker and No. 123 overall prospect in the 2023 class by ESPN. While Crayton (6-2, 215) is ranked as high as the nation’s No. 135 overall prospect in the 2023 class by Rivals, which considers him the No. 10 outside linebacker in the country for his class.

“He’s such a great coach and I’m definitely excited to be coached by him,” Crayton told The Clemson Insider after he committed last Saturday. “He’s been recruiting me so hard, even before they offered. As soon as he got the defensive coordinator position, he’s always been talking to me and my family. He’s been constantly recruiting me and I was actually the first linebacker he offered when he got the position, so that definitely played a part.”

After getting to know Goodwin, Crayton wasn’t surprised at how quickly he was able to pick up where things left off. Goodwin assumed Brent Venables current role after Clemson’s former defensive coordinator left to become the head coach at the University of Oklahoma.

“It was a very smooth transition,” Crayton said. “He’s kind of like me. We both have a chillness about us and we hit it off. That relationship, it was easy for me to make. He wouldn’t call me constantly and be annoying. He would call me enough that he would still recruit me very well and just have those conversations and make it feel as natural as possible. I feel like it was definitely meant to be.”

It was also meant to be for Woodward Academy (Atlanta, Ga.) four-star defensive end AJ Hoffler, who verbally pledged to Clemson earlier this week. Once he got to know Goodwin and what he was all about, it was a wrap.

“He was already in the building and drawing up plays,” Hoffler said. “So, as far as the scheme goes, I never had concerns about that. I just didn’t know him as a person. But, once I got to know him as a person, everything checked out. I knew that on the field, he’s just as good as any other d-coordinator in the nation — he just hasn’t had the chance to do it in actual games, besides one (Clemson’s 20-13 win over Iowa State in the Cheez-It Bowl).

“It was just getting to know him as a person, because on the field, he’s a really, really good coach. So, once I got to know him as a person, it was good from there.”

Recruits like Hoffler and Crayton have continued to speak glowingly about Goodwin’s recruiter time after time. The success he’s had on the recruiting trail can only go up from here. Goodwin has already earned his stripes as a recruiter in six months with the results speaking for themselves.

4-star LB Jamal Anderson commits to Clemson over MSU, other finalists

Michigan State has come up just short for a big-time linebacker prospect in the 2023 class

Michigan State has come up just short for a big-time linebacker prospect in the 2023 class.

Jamal Anderson of Hoschton, Ga. announced on Monday that he’ll continue his football career at Clemson. Anderson — who is a four-star linebacker — picked the Tigers over Michigan State, Utah and USC.

Anderson is ranked as the No. 11 linebacker and No. 173 overall prospect in 247Sports’ composite rankings for the 2023 class. He is also listed as the No. 17 player from Georgia.

Anderson had been projected to choose Clemson so it’s not terribly surprising to see him end up as a Tiger. However, he had taken an official visit to Michigan State earlier this month so there was still hope he may pick Michigan State.

Clemson lands commitment from four-star linebacker

Clemson just added another commit to its 2023 class, which has been steadily rising in recruiting rankings.

After landing four commitments last week, Clemson just added another priority recruit to its 2023 class.

Receiving 34 total offers, four-star linebacker Jamal Anderson announced on Twitter on Monday that he is committing to Clemson. Ranked as the No. 11 linebacker by 247Sports Composite, Anderson chose the Tigers over Utah, Michigan State and USC, among others.

Playing for Mill Creek High School in Hoschton, Ga., Anderson had 78 tackles (7 for loss), four sacks, five pass break ups and two interceptions as a junior in 2021. He last visited Clemson on June 3, along with 29 other recruits, which was the first time head coach Dabo Swinney and his staff had official June visits. With Anderson’s decision, four of the 30 recruits who visited on June 3 have committed to Clemson since then.

The 6-foot-4, 202-pound Anderson joins the nine other commits in Clemson 2023 class, including five-star quarterback Christopher Vizzina, four-star wide receiver Nathaniel Joseph and four-star edge David Ojiegbe.

Clemson has landed the verbal commitment of a top linebacker prospect from the Peach State.

Mill Creek High School (Hoschton, Ga.) four-star Jamal Andeson announced his commitment to the Tigers around 1 p.m. ET on Monday.

Anderson — a 6-foot-4, 200-pound rising senior in the class of 2023, chose Clemson over schools like Michigan State, Utah, Penn State and many others. His decision comes after he  took an official visit to Clemson the weekend of June 3-5

He is the son of former Utah and Atlanta Falcons All-Pro running back Jamal Anderson, Sr.

The younger Anderson received an offer from Clemson while on campus on March 12. He is ranked as high as the No. 10 outside linebacker and No. 123 overall prospect in the 2023 class by ESPN.

In addition to his Clemson visits this year, Anderson was able to take two in two game-day experiences at Memorial Stadium last season. He made his way to The Valley for Clemson’s games against Florida State and Wake Forest.

Anderson becomes the 10th  commitment in Clemson’s 2023 recruiting class overall, joining Briarwood Christian (Birmingham, Ala.) five-star quarterback Christopher Vizzina, Edison (Miami, Fla.) four-star wide receiver Nathaniel Joseph, St. John’s (Washington, D.C.) four-star defensive end David Ojiegbe, Vandegrift (Austin, Texas) four-star offensive lineman Ian Reed, Westlake (Atlanta, Ga.) four-star cornerback Avieon Terrell, First Baptist Academy (Naples, Fla.) four-star tight end Olsen Patt Henry, St. Francis (Alpharetta, Ga.) four-star cornerback Branden Strozier, Sumner (Riverview, Fla.) four-star safety Kylen Webb and Rockwall (TX.) four-star wide receiver Noble Johnson.

An elite-level linebacker that is also a Michigan State target will be announcing his college decision next week.

Four-star linebacker Jamal Anderson of Hoschton, Ga. announced on Friday that he’ll be committing on Monday, June 13. Michigan State is one of 34 programs to express interest in Anderson by offering this high-level prospect.

Anderson ranks as the No. 173 overall prospect and No. 11 linebacker in 247Sports’ composite rankings for the 2023 class.

Michigan State is listed as “warm” in Anderson’s interested schools on 247Sports. Also listed as “warm” is Clemson, Utah and USC, with the Tigers currently the crystal ball favorite to land Anderson. We will see on Monday, however, who Anderson will announce as his future program.
