Instant Analysis: Jets, Joe Douglas get massive haul for disgruntled Jamal Adams

Jets Wire takes a look at the Jamal Adams trade, analyzing what Joe Douglas was able to acquire for the disgruntled All-Pro safety.

While Jamal Adams was doing everything he possibly could to get traded, Joe Douglas was working the back channels to get a haul for his disgruntled All-Pro safety.

And that he did.

In a deal that sends Adams and a fourth-round pick in 2022 to the Seattle Seahawks, the Jets netted a fellow safety in Bradley McDougald, a first-round pick in 2021, a third-round pick in 2021 and a first-round pick in 2022.

As The Athletic’s Connor Hughes noted, the number of first-round picks the Jets acquired for Adams was more than the number of on-field picks Adams got for the Jets over three seasons in New York.

Douglas was able to acquire two first-round picks, a third-round pick and a starting-caliber player for Adams, who clearly wanted out. While Seattle was able to obtain one of the best players at his position, it will sooner or later have to pay an even steeper price when it comes to a contract extension.

Now, Douglas has the capital to invest in premium positions to continue to build Gang Green’s roster from the ground up, finding more help for Sam Darnold in the process. The Jets will likely have five picks in the top 100 selections of the 2021 draft. That alone is a massive addition for New York and, while the results won’t be seen immediately, Douglas has an opportunity to change the course of the franchise with this trade.

While this deal obviously benefits Douglas’ long-term plan, the Jets defense takes a massive blow for the 2020 season. Still, Gregg Williams will now be able to rotate the trio of McDougald, Marcus Maye and Ashtyn Davis, playing each safety to their relative strengths.

Last season, McDougald started 14 games, recording 70 tackles, six passes defended, two interceptions and one forced fumble. While McDougald is not going to be the game-changing playmaker that Adams is, he is still a respectable box safety who can start immediately for Gang Green. Detroit Lions All-Pro cornerback Chris Harris Jr. gave McDougald a ringing endorsement, tweeting “don’t get it twisted, Brad a dog too.”

At the end of the day, this type of package is exactly why Douglas has kept his stance that New York should be willing to listen to offers on Adams. Never did anyone think that the Jets general manager would be able to pull off a package of this magnitude, especially considering the circumstances surrounding Adams and his positon’s value.

Douglas was able to stay patient and picked up the phone when Seattle offered a package eerily similar to what Khalil Mack and Jalen Ramsey were traded away for.

On the other hand, the Seahawks are going all-in on the 2020 season, banking on Adams being a safety who can change the dynamic of the game and be a massive upgrade to their secondary. At the same time, Douglas and the Jets are making a statement with this trade. Even though Adams was the face of the franchise and the team’s most valuable asset, New York never backed down from the possibility of trading him.

Once a suitable offer arrived at One Jets Drive, Douglas pounced on it.

Jamal Adams’ Seahawks host Jets in Week 14

Jamal Adams will play against the Jets in Week 14 of the regular season.

Jamal Adams will not have to wait too long to match up against his former team

Adams was dealt from New York to Seattle in exchange for a 2021 first-round pick, a 2021 third-round pick, a 2022 first-round pick and S Bradley McDougald on Saturday. The Jets also sent the Seahawks a 2022 fourth-round pick.

Coincidentally, the Jets and Seahawks are scheduled to play in Week 14 of the regular season in Seattle. It will be the first time Adams is on the opposite sideline from the Jets.

It was only a matter of time before Adams got traded. Tension between him and the team began back in October when Adams’ name was brought up in trade talks prior to the trade deadline. However, the Jets weren’t going to deal him unless they were blown away with an offer. After not speaking to Joe Douglas and Adam Gase for a few weeks, Adams cleared the air with both.

However, this offseason, Douglas said he wanted to make Adams a “Jet for life,” but he never sent him a contract proposal, according to Adams. The Jets, with two more years of control, wanted to wait on an extension. Adams wanted one now.

Adams responded by making himself a distraction over the last few months. He’s talked about not wanting to be with the Jets on social media and blasted Douglas and Gase in an interview. Adams also called out owner Woody Johnson for alleged racist and sexist comments.

Now Adams will get to remind the Jets of what they are missing in December. You just know Adams will have a little extra motivation for that game.

Jets trade Jamal Adams to Seahawks for multiple 1st-round picks

A blockbuster deal is sending Pro Bowl safety Jamal Adams to the Seattle Seahawks in return for multiple first-round picks

Jamal Adams is finally getting his wish.

One of the NFL’s best safeties has been angling for a trade from the New York Jets for quite some time, and he’s headed to the Seattle Seahawks in a blockbuster deal that includes a pair of future first-round picks:

It didn’t take long for the Seahawks to confirm the move:

The No. 6 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, Adams starred at LSU before becoming a two-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro over his first three seasons in the league. He has quickly established himself as one of the best players in the NFL at his position, but had recently falling out of favor with the Jets’ leadership, leading to his request for a trade.

While the team had continued to maintain that Adams was a big part of their future plans, and that they wanted to keep him with a long-term extension, Adams clearly wanted his football future to continue elsewhere.

The Seahawks gave up quite a haul to make it happen, but now Pete Carroll’s defense has a dynamic weapon in the secondary that could remind Seattle fans of Kam Chancellor in many ways.

For the Jets, they made the best of a sour situation, and though they’re losing one of their best players, they’re able to reload for the future with plenty of premium draft resources.

Jamal Adams says Jets still open to trade this offseason

The Jamal Adams and Jets seem destined for a split according to the All-Pro safety, who said the team is still open to an offseason trade.

The public feud between the New York Jets and safety Jamal Adams just won’t seem to go away. After seeing Adams’ name pop up in trade talks dating back to last year’s trade deadline, the All-Pro safety is apparently still available for the right price.

In an interview with Manish Mehta of the NY Daily News, Adams said Jets general manager Joe Douglas has “conveyed his willingness” to trading him this offseason. Mehta notes New York hasn’t given Adams’ agent permission to discuss a trade with teams yet though. However, Adams already laid out where he’d be interested in landing, with the Baltimore Ravens one of a handful of teams on his shortlist after the team had shown interest in him at last year’s trade deadline.

Adams is undeniably one of the best young defensive backs in the NFL right now. In just three seasons with New York, Adams has two interceptions with one returned for a touchdown, four fumble recoveries with one returned for a touchdown, 273 combined tackles, 28 tackles for a loss, 12 sacks, and 23 quarterback hits. In just the last two seasons, Adams has allowed passer ratings of 74.7 (2018) and 75.2 (2019) when targeted by opposing quarterbacks. Adams would make almost every team in the league better if he was on their roster, and the Ravens are certainly no exception.

Adams told Mehta he wants to “be with an organization that wants to win and do things the right way.” There’s little doubt Baltimore would hit on both of those marks after receiving rave reviews from former safety Eric Weddle. Unfortunately, the Ravens simply aren’t in a good spot to make a real run at Adams right now.

With roughly $7.5 million in available cap space right now, according to Over The Cap, Baltimore isn’t exactly flush with money to make blockbuster trades. At least not trade for Adams and give him the contract extension he’s been trying to get from the Jets. Furthermore, the Ravens already have their starting safeties after signing Chuck Clark to a contract extension this offseason and signing Earl Thomas as a free agent last year. Though Adams would be a huge addition for Baltimore, it’s hard to envision the Ravens realistically making a play for him right now. But if Adams is willing to wait a bit, things become a little more interesting.

Thomas is a potential cap casualty next year and would free up $6 million if cut after this season. That would be on top of the $63.48 million in cap space the Ravens are currently expected to have in 2021, according to OTC. That could be enough for Baltimore to make serious inquiries for Adams if New York is truly open to trading their star defender. Then again, if the Jets are willing to move him this offseason and can find a suitable trade partner, the timing might not work out in the Ravens’ favor.

With Baltimore already showing interest previously and Adams returning their wandering eye, it’s easy to get excited about what could happen.

Podcast: Discussions on Jags sticking to 4-3, Adams being a fit, Vegas’ odds for them to sign Kaepernick

Bleav and Jaguars Wire’s James Johnson and Phil Smith discuss the latest in news surrounding the Jags in episode 20 of their podcast.

After a week off, the “Bleav in Jags Podcast” has returned. In episode 20, Jaguars Wire contributor Phil Smith and I once again discussed a variety of buzz-worthy topics surrounding the Jacksonville Jaguars.

This week we started by discussing the Jags’ additions of Denard Robinson and Tony Gilbert as coaching assistants. As two former players for the organization, both could be great additions and we explained just what each brings to the table.

Afterward, we discussed the recent media conferences with Doug Marrone and Todd Wash, both of whom indicated that fans should pump the brakes on a move to the 3-4 defense. This is a topic that left a lot of Jags fans puzzled and both Phil and I discussed our personal opinions on what the Jags will run defensively.

Lastly, for our main topics, we discussed two players who aren’t on the roster: Jamal Adams and Colin Kaepernick.

Adams is a player who has been a core topic within the football community after demanding a trade from the New York Jets. And while the Jags aren’t necessarily a desired destination of his, they make sense as a candidate to land him. We discussed just why at the 20-minute mark.

Afterward, we discussed Kaepernick’s odds to land with the Jags as Vegas has him down with a 15/2 chance to be signed by them. It appears he has a strong chance to return to the NFL, so both Phil and I also examined why it could or couldn’t be the Jags.

NFL.com’s Gil Brandt lists Jags as the third-best trade fit for Jamal Adams

While many are looking at playoff contenders as fits for Jamal Adams, NFL.com’s Gil Brandt thinks the Jags are a top fit for him.

One of the biggest topics of discussion in the football community has been Jamal Adams demanding a trade from the New York Jets due to a contract dispute. Since taking to social media with his thoughts, many have pointed out teams he could end up with if traded, most of which were labeled as desired destinations by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

However, as we’ve seen in the past, trades more times than not aren’t dictated by the player — and if traded — Adams could end up with a team that wasn’t named by Schefter or one many aren’t suspecting.

One team that NFL.com’s Gil Brandt at least feels are a fit is the Jacksonville Jaguars. On his list of fits, they came in at the No. 3 spot with only the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys, respectively, above them

As I wrote above, the Jets should expect at least a first-round pick in return for Adams, which might make this potential deal too rich for a Jaguars team that, on paper, looks ticketed for a top-10 draft choice in 2021. And that’s setting aside the fact that Jacksonville is the one team here that does not appear on Adams’ reported wish list. But you could argue that Adams would be worth the investment for a group looking to grow, instantly lifting a secondary that will otherwise be relying on rookie C.J. Henderson to shoulder a significant amount of the load. The Jaguars haven’t fielded a true impact safety since Rashean Mathis’ heyday.

While it admittedly feels like a long-shot, here at Jags Wire we’ve also deemed the Jags as a good fit. They have nine total draft picks waiting for them in 2021 and two of them are first-round selections thanks to Jalen Ramsey.

However, unlike Brandt, we’ve also pointed out a way the Jags could potentially land Adams without giving up a first-round pick, and that’s by trading them Yannick Ngakoue. As many have seen, the young defensive end has been in a contract dispute of his own with the Jags and has made it clear he no longer wants to play for them.

While the team could hold on to hope that he’ll have a change of heart, it’s a gamble that could hurt them in the end when they reflect on it if he doesn’t. Additionally, the Jags would come out cheaper in 2020 compensating Adams as the highest-paid safety in the league than paying out Ngakoue a salary of $18 million under the franchise tender.

Only Adam’s (and maybe his agent) knows if Jacksonville is a spot he’d be fine with playing at. However, for a new deal to be the league’s highest-paid safety in a state without income taxes, he just might be open to it.

4 teams that make the most sense for potential Jamal Adams trade

Jets Wire takes a look at four potentially ideal trade suitors for Jamal Adams.

It’s safe to assume Joe Douglas’ phone will be ringing off the hook in the coming days, weeks and maybe even months now that Jamal Adams has officially requested a trade from the Jets.

Adams reached his breaking point last week, demanding out because New York has yet to give him the lucrative contract extension that he desires. The Jets have not indicated they have any plans to move the All-Pro safety, but if Douglas and company ultimately decide to shop him, there will be no shortage of suitors — even though a hefty asking price and looming contract negotiations might deter some teams from entering the sweepstakes.

A bunch of clubs will inquire about Adams, but there are four that stand head and toe above the rest as ideal fits for both him and the Jets. Let’s take a look at who those teams are and what they can bring to the negotiating table.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

After luring Tom Brady away from the Patriots and Rob Gronkowski out of retirement, it’s clear that the Buccaneers are in win-now mode.

Tampa Bay’s window to contend for a Super Bowl won’t be open for long, as Brady is not exactly a spring chicken anymore. Trading for Adams would give the Buccaneers another much-needed key piece to aid their title pursuit. It would also reunite Adams with former Jets head coach Todd Bowles, who is now Tampa Bay’s defensive coordinator.

The Buccaneers’ salary cap situation is not ideal right now, as they only have $4.9 million left to spend, according to OverTheCap. However, since Adams is willing to play for a new team without receiving an extension upon arrival, Tampa Bay has some time to clear up cap space to keep him in the Sunshine State long-term. It also has the draft capital to emerge as a suitor Joe Douglas seriously considers doing business with.

Report: Ravens 1 of 7 teams Jets S Jamal Adams would welcome trade

The Baltimore Ravens showed interest in safety Jamal Adams last season and he’s open to the idea of being traded there.

The idea of the Baltimore Ravens trading for New York Jets safety Jamal Adams simply won’t go away. After Baltimore was one of a few teams to inquire about Adams at the trade deadline last season, the Ravens have frequently popped back up in rumors of a potential trade for Adams this offseason.

While Baltimore would surely love to have one of the best defensive players in the league on their roster, it’s often a two-way street. Though New York likely could move Adams without his permission, few teams would agree to a trade unless he was also happy with the deal. That’s especially the case since Adams has been feuding with the Jets over a contract extension and would undoubtedly have the same demands from any new team.

The Ravens don’t have to worry about Adams being OK with the idea apparently. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Baltimore is one of just seven teams Adams would be happy to be traded to.

It’s all well and good that Adams is on board with joining the Ravens but in order for a trade to actually happen, Baltimore would undoubtedly want to have a contract extension locked up as well so it doesn’t become a two-year rental. It’s what happened when the Ravens traded for former Jacksonville Jaguars defensive end Calais Campbell this offseason. Any trade would also have to make sense in terms of draft capital, further complicating things.

While anything can happen in the NFL, especially with active general managers like Eric DeCosta and Joe Douglas, it seems like a longshot for a deal to actually get pulled off. It also isn’t very practical for the Ravens, who have their starters in place at safety and far more pressing needs.

Baltimore already has a starting safety duo in Chuck Clark and Earl Thomas. The Ravens signed Clark to a three-year contract extension at the end of last season and signed Thomas in free agency just a year ago. Baltimore would actually lose cap space just by cutting either of them right now, according to Over The Cap, which they can’t really afford even if they wanted to. Furthermore, giving Adams a contract extension before locking up guys already on the roster like Matthew Judon, Marlon Humphrey, or Ronnie Stanley would be a head-scratcher.

But with Adams and the Ravens the topic of frequent rumors and reports, this is likely the last we’ve heard about a potential trade.

Report: Jamal Adams would welcome trade to 7 teams

Jamal Adams has a few preferred destinations in mind now that he has requested a trade from the Jets.

Jamal Adams has a few preferred destinations in mind now that he has requested a trade from the Jets.

The safety’s ask became known on Thursday after months of tension between the two sides. Adams has been vocal about wanting a record-setting contract extension, while the Jets are in no rush to give him one despite GM Joe Douglas saying he ultimately wants to make Adams a “Jets for life.”

Adams, however, has run out of patience and made it known that he wants out. More specifically, he would like to be traded to one of the following teams:

The Cowboys, Adams’ hometown team, have been linked to the All-Pro since Douglas listened to offers for Adams prior to last season’s trade deadline. Douglas simply answering the phone upset Adams, thus starting the player and team on the path that would lead to these most recent developments. However, it appears that Adams is open to more than just a homecoming.

As much as Adams may or may not want out — this could simply be an attempt to force Douglas’ hand — the reality is that he doesn’t hold much leverage here. Rarely is a player extended after just three NFL seasons and the Jets have the ability to control him for as many as four more seasons. Throw in the uncertainty facing future salary caps numbers due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the Jets don’t have much incentive to make any sort of move right now.

So Adams can make his demands and start hunting for houses in the aforementioned cities if he wants, but this stalemate isn’t coming to a resolution anytime soon.

C.J. Mosley thinks Jets would be ‘crazy’ to trade Jamal Adams

Jets linebacker C.J. Mosley wasn’t worried about Jamal Adams getting traded, despite all the speculation.

Despite all the trade rumors swirling around  Jamal Adams in the last year, teammate C.J. Mosley never thought a deal would happen.

The Adams rumors began prior to the trade deadline last October. After the Jets decided not to deal him then, it was quiet up until the 2020 NFL Draft. Adams, in search of an extension, chose not to participate in the Jets’ virtual offseason program, which added some fuel to the fire. Mosley, however, wasn’t concerned.

“To me, I wasn’t too worried about that,” Mosley said, per ESPN’s Rich Cimini. “That would be a crazy move.”

Mosley and Adams were supposed to be the leaders of the Jets defense last season. However, they didn’t get to share the field together as much as they would’ve liked. Mosley injured his groin right away in Week 1 and only returned for one more game after that. He has since had surgery but expects to be ready for training camp.

Watching from the sidelines, Mosley loved what he saw out of Adams.

“First of all, he’s one of the leaders on the team,” Mosley said. “That’s first and foremost. He brings that extra energy whether guys want it or not. Sometimes you might be tired or not feeling good, but as soon as he steps on the field, you’re going to hear that voice and he’ll be flying around. To have that presence in the secondary, a guy that can make plays in the passing game and also plays in the backfield — in the box — that’s always exciting.”

Even without Mosley, the Jets still had a respectable defense under Gregg Williams. They were 16th in points allowed per game (16.6), seventh in total yards allowed per game (323.1), 17th in passing yards allowed per game (236.2) and second against the run per game (86.9).

If Mosley can stay healthy in 2020, there’s no reason not to think he and Adams can leader an even stronger unit together.
