Kansas knocks BYU from undefeated ranks with bizarre carom on pooch punt

Kansas went into BYU and knocked the Cougars from the unbeaten ranks

Kansas quarterback Jalon Daniels’ foot — not feet nor arm — wound up delivering the key play in the Jayhawks’ 17-13 win over previously undefeated BYU on Saturday.

Daniels was called on for a pooch punt in the fourth quarter. He placed it perfectly, not in the coffin corner, off the helmet of one of the Jayhawks.

Kansas recovered the live football and on the next play, Devon Neal scored on a 3-yard run to give the Jayhawks the lead for good.

The Cougars came in 9-0 and seventh in the College Football Playoff Ranking. They never got untracked against the Jayhawks.

Their lead at 13-10 came after a 10:30 drive to start the final quarter. It was the last points they scored.

Quarterback Jake Retzlaff threw an interception late in the first half and his pass on fourth down on BYU’s final drive came up short of a first down inside the Kansas 10.

The Kansas Jayhawks are off to their hottest start of the season on Saturday as they look to win their homecoming game against the Houston Cougars at Arrowhead Stadium.

After star quarterback Jalon Daniels and tight end Jared Casey got the Jayhawks out to an early lead in the first quarter, Kansas didn’t let its foot off the gas.

Later in the opening period, Daniels hit speedy wide receiver Quentin Skinner deep downfield with a 48-yard pass that required a leaping effort to haul in.

Check out this video of Skinner’s impressive catch, which was posted to Twitter by Kansas Football’s official account:

The Jayhawks currently hold a 1-5 record, but a win over the Cougars would be a step in the right direction for Kansas as head coach Lance Leipold looks to salvage the rest of his team’s 2024 campaign.

Expect to see more highlight plays from Daniels and Skinner as Saturday’s Big 12 showdown at Arrowhead Stadium continues.

Jalon Daniels, Jared Casey connect for Kansas TD at Arrowhead Stadium

The #Jayhawks are playing their homecoming game at Arrowhead Stadium, and took an early lead over the Houston #Cougars with this touchdown.

The Kansas Jayhawks are playing their homecoming game at Arrowhead Stadium against the Houston Cougars, and they wasted no time finding the endzone in the first quarter.

With so much pressure on Kansas to turn their 1-5 around this season, the Jayhawks needed to make a statement early against the Cougars, and star quarterback Jalon Daniels was able to do just that.

After a short kickoff return by Kansas to open the game, Daniels easily marched the Jayhawks’ offense down the field, and eventually connected with tight end Jared Casey for the game’s opening score.

Take a look at the outstanding red zone connection between Daniels and Casey in this video, which was posted by Kansas Football’s official account on Twitter:

Kansas continued extending its lead at Arrowhead Stadium through the end of the first quarter and into the second, and it currently holds a convincing 21-0 advantage over Houston before halftime.

Jayhawks at Arrowhead: Jalon Daniels, Luke Grimm connect for early touchdown

Kansas #Jayhawks QB Jalon Daniels connected with WR Luke Grimm for a touchdown against the TCU Horned Frogs at Arrowhead Stadium.

The Kansas Jayhawks have struggled to begin the 2024 college football season, but are hoping a trip to Arrowhead Stadium, home of the Kansas City Chiefs, might change their fortunes this week.

The Jayhawks got off to a quick start in their matchup against the TCU Horned Frogs at Arrowhead on Saturday and looked like the team many thought they would be to start the season.

After cornerback Cobee Bryant forced an early turnover, quarterback Jalon Daniels found his rhythm when Kansas was on offense and easily marched the Jayhawks down the field for a touchdown.

Take a look at Daniels’ touchdown pass to wide receiver Luke Grimm, which was posted by KU Football’s official Twitter account:

Kansas has a long way to go if they intend to meet their preseason expectations, but if Daniels and Grimm can continue to connect in key situations, the Jayhawks could easily find themselves in their third-straight bowl game.

Kansas announces starting quarterback for 2024 opener

Kansas names Jalon Daniels the starting quarterback for the 2024 college football season.

Kansas head coach Lance Leipold announced Tuesday following practice that Jalon Daniels would be the Week 1 starter at quarterback. Daniels has been injury-prone throughout his career with the Jayhawks. Last season he had a back injury, which limited him to just three games. In 2022, he missed half of the season with a shoulder injury.

Daniels has thrown for 2,729 yards and 23 touchdowns over 12 career games for the Jayhawks. He is excited to get back on the field and lead a talented Jayhawks squad:

I mean, it’s definitely exciting. My last game actually being able to play was against BYU,” Daniels said, referring to a win over the Cougars on Sept. 23, 2023. “So I feel like, you know, I’m just going to take advantage of the opportunity that’s given.

His coach was obviously very excited to be able to place him in the lineup. He will have Lawrence Arnold, Luke Grimm, Quentin Skinner, and Trevor Wilson back as receivers. Devin Neal and Daniel Hishaw also return to the lineup.

Jason Bean was the starter for much of last season and is now with the Indianapolis Colts. Leipold was asked about Daniels and had this to say:

He will start the opener. I’ve seen a lot of good things from Jalon Daniels in the last 10 days, and he hasn’t missed anything. He’s played well and he’s confident and he’s excited. His enthusiasm is contagious. And we all know that it’s important for him to stay healthy, but it’s good to see.

The Jayhawks start the Big 12 season on September 21st on the road at West Virginia.

5 most underrated QBs in college football ahead of the 2024 season

Looking into five of the nation’s most underrated quarterbacks ahead of the 2024 season, from Garrett Greene to Jalon Daniels

There’s plenty of talk about Carson Beck, Shedeur Sanders and Quinn Ewers with the 2024 season just on the horizon, but they aren’t the only quarterbacks to keep an eye on this fall.

Despite not being heralded nearly as highly as last year’s crop of quarterbacks, there are still several names who could develop into something special, including many who have flown under the radar.

Here’s a look into the five most underrated quarterbacks in college football with the season just around the corner:

1. Garrett Greene, WVU

In terms of quarterbacks who don’t get enough credit for the amount of value they bring to their team, Garrett Greene may be the most overlooked, underrated quarterback of them all nationally.

According to Pro Football Focus, Greene led the FBS in big-time throws  (10.2%), something that is not surprising given how he’s made the most of his opportunities in pivotal moments, even under pressure.

In addition to what he’s able to do as a passer, Greene’s improvisation ability and mobility play a large role into how truly dynamic of a football player he really is.

Greene finished out the 2023 season with a 52.9% completion rate, passing for 2,406 yards with 16 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. He also rushed for 772 yards and 13 touchdowns.

His 91.0 overall PFF grade last season tied him for the sixth-highest graded quarterback among Power Five passers, right there with Heisman Trophy finalist Michael Penix Jr.

2. Brady Cook, Missouri

Cook had his ups and downs early on as the starter, but he developed over time and has quietly become one of the nation’s best quarterbacks and a force to be reckoned with in the SEC.

He put together the best season of his career with a top-10 team in 2023, connecting on 66.1% of his passes for 3,317 yards with 21 touchdowns and 6 interceptions in 2023, adding 319 rushing yards and 8 scores on the ground. When looking purely at the stat sheet, it’s important to note all of Cook’s interceptions came in the first seven games of the season and that he greatly improved in the area as time went on.

Heading into the 2024 season, Cook has made clear he and the Tigers have the lofty expectations of making it to the national championship, though that’s going to mean having to push aside the fortress that is the Georgia Bulldogs.

Cook could very well use this season as an opportunity to send his draft stock  into the stars as he’s already impressed with his abilities both from the pocket and when called upon to use his legs, ball placement and speed of release.

3. Graham Mertz, Florida

There was a time Graham Mertz was looked upon as one of the lower-tier quarterbacks of college football, but those days are over after Mertz burst onto the SEC scene

Mertz completed 72.9% of his passes for 2,903 yards with 20 touchdowns and 3 interceptions in 2023, putting up much-improved numbers individually behind a subpar offensive line. On the ground, he rushed for 4 scores.

The former Wisconsin quarterback’s 80.2% adjusted completion rate is the second-highest among returning Power 4 conference quarterbacks. In addition to how he’s been commended for who he is as a communicator from an intangibles perspective, Mertz has also impressed with the way he’s able to work off-platform, the situational awareness he has and rarely putting the ball in harm’s way (as his stellar touchdown-to-interception ratio from 2023 would suggest).

If Mertz can build upon the new foundation he set at Florida last year heading into the 2024 season, he could quickly fly up the draft boards.

4. Jalon Daniels, Kansas

Daniels has flashed several times, catching some national attention, but the chief question is as to whether or not he can remain healthy long enough to remain in the spotlight. The veteran signal-caller saw action in just three games last season and has yet to put together a 10-game season in his college career.

2022 was his best season, when he completed 66.1% of his passes for 2,014 yards with 18 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. Daniels saw the field for three games in 2023, completing 74.7% of his passing attempts for 705 yards with 5 touchdowns and 1 interception. He also rushed for 74 yards.

It’s easy to get the sense Daniels could be one of college football’s most electric players if he can stay on the field with the true dual-threat presence he brings between the way he’s continuously improved as a pure pocket passer and the pure speed he has on the ground.

5. Garrett Nussmeier, LSU

It’s coming time to give the gunslinger a bit more credit. He’s patiently waited his turn and could show to be the quarterback who had the highest ceiling in the Tigers’ room of signal-callers after all dependent upon how he grows in 2024.

Nussmeier has never lacked confidence in himself, comparing himself to one of college football’s greatest quarterbacks in recent history as just a recruit.

“I think I bring a very Joe Burrow-like mind to the table for LSU,” Nussmeier told me in 2020 before officially committing to LSU. “I see a lot of similarities in the way we play. I’d like to think that we think the same. I know that’s saying a lot. He did an unbelievable job. I’d like to think that I can learn and get to the point to do things the way he did.”

Over six appearances during the 2023 season, Nussmeier completed 61.5% of his passes for 591 yards with 4 touchdowns and 1 interception. There’s no question that he’s got superior arm strength in his toolbox, but he also seems to be improving in decision-making from the pocket and has proven his ability to come in clutch.

In his only start at LSU, the 2024 ReliaQuest Bowl, Nussmeier led the Tigers on a late fourth quarter touchdown drive to beat Wisconsin, 35-31, passing for 395 yards and 3 touchdowns. Nussmeier was named the MVP for his efforts, with his 31 completions and 395 passing yards against the Badgers ranking as the most in LSU history for a quarterback making his first start.

Jackson Arnold outside the top 10 in ESPN’s 2024 spring quarterback rankings

Oklahoma quarterback Jackson Arnold just outside ESPN’s 10 ten QBs for the 2024 season ahead of spring ball.

Anytime you have turnover at quarterback, there are bound to be questions about how the offense will perform the following season.

The Sooners are one of the teams across the country that will be starting a new quarterback in 2024. [autotag]Jackson Arnold[/autotag] takes over for [autotag]Dillon Gabriel[/autotag], who transferred to Oregon. And while there may be some uncertainty, the Sooners have one of the best young quarterbacks in the country.

The former five-star prospect isn’t one of the favorites to win the Heisman in 2024 and at this point. At this point he’s just outside the top-10 of ESPN’s quarterback rankings heading into the spring. And a lot of where Arnold is ranked is likely related to his inexperience at the collegiate level.

The only player without much experience that’s ranked ahead of Arnold is Tennessee Volunteers quarterback [autotag]Nico Iamaleavea[/autotag].

Arnold has a lot of talent and is a highly-regarded quarterback, but he and Iamaleava have a lot to prove still. But they’ve got all the talent in the world, and both former five-star quarterbacks were able to get their first start during bowl season.

Arnold and Iamaleava will likely provide the fireworks in the Oklahoma Sooners first conference game in the SEC when they welcome the Tennessee Volunteers to town. That could be the start of a fantastic quarterback battle over the next several years. In the offenses they run with the talent that both schools possess, both former five-star quarterbacks could be dark-horse Heisman contenders in 2024 and frontrunners in 2025.

For the Sooners, everything is set up for Arnold to find himself ranked much higher in these quarterback rankings by the end of the season. The offensive line will come together and the Sooners have a deep pool of skill talent for Arnold to work with.

Here’s a look at ESPN’s top 10.

Kansas quarterback Jalen Daniels makes decision on 2024 season

What a boon for Coach Leipold and the Jayhawks for 2024.

The Kansas Jayhawks received quite a bump on Thursday and injured starting quarterback Jalen Daniels made a decision about his future in Lawrence. Kansas tweeted out that he will return to the Jayhawks for the 2024 season.

“Jayhawk Nation, I want to thank you for your support and well wishes as I battle back from injury,” Daniels stated in the message posted on X (formerly Twitter.) “Personally, it has been an incredibly difficult time being away from the game that I love and not being able to play with my brothers in front of our incredible fans on Saturdays. The adversity that I have faced this season will help me come back even stronger when the time is right. Kansas is a very special place to me, and I will be back next season to continue to move the program forward under Coach Leipold. Rock Chalk!”

Daniels appeared in just three games this season, completing 74.7% of his passes for 705 yards and 5 touchdowns. He also missed time during the 2022 season, only appearing in nine games. Jason Bean has filled in for both seasons and he will be moving on after the season.

The redshirt junior will give the Jayhawks a good chance in the new-look Big 12 next season when Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, and Utah enter the fray. Over his career which spans four seasons and 25 games, Daniels has thrown for 4,297 yards and 31 touchdowns while completing 63.6% of his pass attempts.

Provided that he is healthy in 2024, he should be a contender for comeback player of the year honors.

5 Jayhawks to know ahead of Oklahoma vs. Kansas

Get ready for Oklahoma’s road trip to face Kansas by getting to know these 5 Jayhawks.

Oklahoma’s quest to Arlington for the right to play for one final Big 12 title continues again this week as the Sooners travel to Lawrence, Kansas, to take on Lance Leipold’s Jayhawks.

Kansas has had a renaissance of late. They are no longer the sport’s worst program and can undoubtedly give Oklahoma a fight. There’s an avenue for KU to win, especially if the Sooners play like they did against UCF.

Kansas (5-2, 2-2 Big 12 play) will try to get back on track vs. No. 6 Oklahoma (7-0, 4-0) after suffering a loss in their last game on October 14th against the Oklahoma State Cowboys. The bye week came at a perfect time. The Jayhawks will be motivated and rested to try and knock off a top-10 team at home and secure bowl eligibility for the second straight season.

Oklahoma will have their hands full, especially defensively. Kansas has a dynamic offense. KU averages 212 yards on the ground per game on 5.6 yards per carry. The most dynamic aspect would have been their talented signal caller, Jalon Daniels, but he will not play. Instead, senior Jason Bean will lead the way.

Who are the players to know for a team that Oklahoma can’t take lightly? We’ve got you covered below.

Jason Bean expected to start for Kansas when they host the Oklahoma Sooners

While Jalon Daniels is making progress, it sounds like the Sooners will see Jason Bean at quarterback for the Kansas Jayhawks this week.

The biggest question mark this week ahead of the Oklahoma Sooners’ road trip to Lawrence is the health of Kansas Jayhawks quarterback Jalon Daniels.

Daniels has been out the last several weeks due to a lingering back issue that kept him out of the season opener against Missouri State. And it looks like it may keep him out against the Sooners this Saturday.

Joining Steven St. John and Nate Bukaty on Sports Radio 810 a.m. Tuesday morning, Kansas Jayhawks head coach Lance Leipold provided an update on the KU quarterback.

“He’s making progress,” Leipold said of Daniels. “It’s still not where it needs to know. Again, today will be a big day. I haven’t heard what the trainers are going to say, but right now, I would expect Jason Bean to be the starting quarterback, and that’s the direction we’re heading.”

Jason Bean isn’t your typical backup quarterback. He’s played a lot of football and been productive when he’s gotten the opportunity to play. This season, Bean has completed 65% of his passes for 913 yards and nine touchdowns. He’s thrown just two interceptions (both in the loss to Oklahoma State). Bean is averaging 9.6 yards per attempt, which would be tied for seventh in the nation if he had enough attempts to qualify.

He may not have the same ceiling that a guy like Jalon Daniels has, but he’s a player capable of putting on a show through the air. Just last year against Oklahoma, Bean threw for 265 yards and four touchdowns. That was a week after throwing for 262 yards and four scores against TCU.

As Leipold mentioned, Daniels is making progress. So Brent Venables and his staff will have to be prepared for the potential that Daniels could play. However, it’s looking like it will be Jason Bean leading the way for the Jayhawks on Saturday.
