Texas loses again, hits rock bottom in latest Big 12 Power Rankings after week 12

The teams at the top of the conference took care of business this week, but how does the bottom half look after week 12 action in the Big 12

The Oklahoma State Cowboys clinched a spot in the Big 12 title game with their shutout win over the Texas Tech Red Raiders because of their head-to-head win over the Baylor Bears. The Oklahoma Sooners bounced back from their first loss of the season to beat the Iowa State Cyclones and control their own destiny heading into Bedlam. A win for the Sooners and they’re in.

A loss and a Baylor win and the Bears will be making the trip to Arlington looking to avenge their loss to the Cowboys from earlier in the season.

At the other end of the Big 12 power rankings, a big name team tumbled further down the list after their sixth straight loss, this time to West Virginia. The Texas Longhorns have now lost back-to-back games to the two teams that have been at or near the bottom of these rankings for much of this season; the Kansas Jayhawks and the West Virginia Mountaineers. Things are not good in Austin even if it’s still early in the Steve Sarkisian era.

The season’s almost over and several Big 12 teams are vying for bowl eligibility and Big 12 championship berths. It should make for an interesting final week of the season in the Big 12. With that, let’s take a look at this week’s power rankings after week 12 action.

Texas Longhorns vs. Kansas: QB Tale of the Tape

Which quarterback has the edge in the QB tale of the tape for this game? Sam Ehlinger on one side versus the QB duo of Kansas.

On Saturday in Lawrence, the Texas Longhorns and Kansas Jayhawks begin their final stretch of games for the 2020 college football season. Texas is 5-2 (4-2) while Kansas is 0-7 (0-6) this year. The Jayhawks are just looking to build any momentum they can in the final three games.

The Horns, on the other hand, are still in the hunt for the Big 12 Championship game. They can’t afford a slip during the next three games. They should beat Kansas handily, but they should have last year as well. They escaped with a two-point win.

The quarterbacks will face the ninth- and 10th-ranked passing defenses in the conference. However, the Longhorns actually have the worst passing defense. Texas allows 298.7 passing yards per game while Kansas allows 275.2 yards per game. If a team wants to throw the ball, these are the two defenses your offensive coordinator wants to see on Saturday. Can either QB take advantage?

Despite the fact Sam Ehlinger is averaging the worst yards per attempt since his freshman season, he is more than capable of getting after the Jayhawks defense. Ehlinger hasn’t run at the same clip of previous seasons, but against the 10th-ranked rush defense, he just might have a record day.

Over their last three games, Kansas is surrendering 295.3 yards and 2.3 passing touchdowns per game. The Jayhawks have been outscored 169-45 during that stretch. That breaks down to an average score margin of 56.3-15.

Edge: Sam Ehlinger by a wide margin
