The Tucson Sugar Skulls is the IFL team for Ohio State fans

Tucson Sugar Skulls is the IFL team for Ohio State fans #GoBucks #TheIndoorWar

The Indoor Football League has kicked its season off and there are only three former Ohio State football players in this league, but they are all on the same team, which makes being a fan much easier. If you are like me, you don’t necessarily pledge your allegiance to a specific IFL team, but you still want to root for former Buckeyes, the Tucson Sugar Skulls made it happen.

The three Buckeyes playing for Tuscon are IFL veteran, Torrance Gibson, Demario McCall, and Jalin Marshall.

Gibson is a former four-star lefty quarterback out of Florida in the class of 2015, who never found his footing at quarterback for Ohio State and made the position change to wide receiver.

He again struggled to see the field and transferred to both Cincinnati and Mississippi Gulf Coast at the JUCO level. Gibson has been bouncing around the alternative leagues scene, spending time in the Canadian Football League with the Edmonton Eskimos as well as a few other teams in the IFL including the Spokane Shock and Green Bay Blizzard.

Demario McCall is a former four-star running back from the state of Ohio in the class of 2016 and like Gibson never really found a positional home, but unlike Gibson stayed his entire collegiate career at Ohio State. McCall spent time at running back, wide receiver and cornerback before departing and had a cup of coffee with the Chicago Bears. He was supposed to play in the Major League Football league, but that league folded before it even kicked off. He is now a receiver and return man for the Sugar Skulls.

Last, but not least, Jalin Marshall was a five-star recruit from Ohio in the class of 2013 and shined as a wide receiver for the Buckeyes before declaring for the NFL draft early and going undrafted. Marshall still found a home with the New York Jets, but was suspended due to performance-enhancing supplements and eventually cut. He began his alternative football journey with the Orlando Apollos in the Alliance of American Football and dominated enough to get a second NFL shot, this time with the Oakland Raiders. Marshall also shined in the CFL with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and spent a season with the Edmonton Elks.

Jalin Marshall makes insane catch

Jalin Marshall makes insane catch #GoBucks

The Indoor Football League has kicked off their season and the Tuscon Sugar Skulls actually have a few former Ohio State players on their roster, but the most memorable is still making plays in Jalin Marshall. Every Buckeye fan will remember Marshall as the homegrown star was a five-star recruit in the class of 2013 and after receiving a redshirt his first season on campus, Marshall was on the field early and often in his collegiate career.

His 38 receptions as a redshirt freshman were the second most in school history for a freshman right behind the 41 receptions from Cris Carter. Marshall played well as a redshirt sophomore, but made the surprising decision to declare for the NFL Draft early.

After going undrafted, Marshall has had a few cups of coffee in the NFL and was a star in the now-defunct Alliance of American Football. Marshall also played North of border in the Canadian Football League, but this past weekend Marshall may have had the most impressive catch of his career.

Former Ohio State football players in the CFL

Former Ohio State football players in the CFL #GoBucks #CFL

The Canadian Football League just finished its first week of the regular season and entering week one only four former Ohio State Buckeyes were on rosters. This number seems low, but last season we saw the exact same number of Buckeyes on rosters.

Three guys on this list are coming back from last season and the other is a former CFL All-Star who is returning after two seasons off. Half of this list are former players who transferred out of Ohio State, but the names will likely be memorable for most.

The most interesting part of this list is actually who is left off. Most will remember J.T. Barrett signing with the Edmonton Elks, but an injury forced him to the league’s retired list. The Elks then moved on to Cardale Jones, but he was cut after a few days. The most high-profile players of the CFL off-season didn’t even make the active rosters, but here are the four former Ohio State players who did.

Jalin Marshall signs with second professional league in three weeks

Former Ohio State receiver and return man, Jalin Marshall, has had a busy 2022 as today he signed with his second professional team in a second professional football league. Marshall will be joining his former quarterback J.T. Barrett up north in the Canadian Football League with the Edmonton Elks.

Marshall has taken this opportunity over playing for the Massachusetts Pirates of the Indoor Football League, which he signed with just three weeks earlier on January 19th.

Unlike Barrett, Marshall already had some CFL experience as he has been with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats since the 2019 season, where he appeared in eight games and accounted for eight receptions for 139 yards. Big things were expected from Marshall in 2020 as the leading receiver for Hamilton left to the NFL and Marshall seemingly understood the nuances of the game. However, COVID-19 forced the league to cancel its season.

The 2021 season was less than spectacular for Marshall. He appeared in the season opener and earned two receptions for 20 yards but disappeared from the line-up for the rest of the season. However, we have all seen his athletic ability and Marshall can certainly make an impact.

Marshall will be joining a receiving room that features CFL legend Derel Walker, who some may remember from his time at Texas A&M, Tevaun Smith from Iowa, and Armanti Edwards who will always be remembered as the quarterback for Appalachian State when it defeated Michigan.

It should be noted that Marshall is still only 26-years old and has spent time with the New York Jets and Oakland Raiders in the NFL, as well as the Orlando Apollos of the now-defunct Alliance of American Football (AAF).

We’ll keep an eye on Marshall and what he can do up in Canada, eh? Stay tuned.

Former Ohio State football players in the CFL

The Canadian Football League (CFL) is about to kick off. Did you know these former Ohio State players are playing north of the border?

The Canadian Football League will begin training camp this week with the season kicking off on August 5. There are always a few notable former Buckeyes that continue their gridiron careers up north like Duron Carter, Jonathan Newsome, and Troy Smith from years past. And true to form, there are five memorable OSU names to keep track of for the 2021 season as well.

For those unfamiliar with the CFL, there are nine teams and the field is larger with only three downs. But another key component is that teams are required to maintain a certain number of native Canadians on the roster and on the field, which makes roster sports even more complex.

Below are the five former Buckeyes who are looking to make waves this season in the CFL. Please remember there was not a season in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
