The Arizona Cardinals have selected three players in the NFL supplemental draft in 1989, 1990 and then, most recently, in 2019.
The NFL has held a supplemental draft since 1977. However, for the second year in a row, they will not hold one this year.
The Arizona Cardinals have taken advantage of the supplemental draft before. They have selected three players in it.
In fact, only one team in the entire league has used the supplemental draft more. The Dallas Cowboys have selected five players in it in their history.
The Cardinals took players in consecutive years in 1989 and 1990, then did not use it again for 28 years. In 2019, they were the only team to do so and there has not been one in the two years since then.
What is the Cardinals’ history in the supplemental draft?
For the second straight year, there will be no NFL supplemental draft. The Cardinals were the last to select a player in it.
The NFL has held a supplemental draft for years for those college players with different circumstances. For whatever reason, those players were not eligible for the April draft or did not declare and wish to enter the NFL.
If a team selects a player in the supplemental draft, they forfeit the pick they have in the following year’s draft in the round they selected the player.
However, for the second year in a row, there will be no supplemental draft, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
It was canceled last year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The league is not required to hold one, Pelissero notes, per the collective bargaining agreement with the players.
Because of the pandemic season in 2020, this year’s draft class was smaller than ever.
The Arizona Cardinals were the last team to take a player in the supplemental draft. They did so in 1999, selecting safety Jalen Thompson, who starts alongside All-Pro Budda Baker.
Michigan State will get a trio of Cass Tech players on an unofficial visit as the dead period is set to conclude.

The NCAA dead period is set to be lifted on June 1st, allowing for visits to start once again. The Michigan State staff will look to start the month off with a bang, getting several top targets on campus.
A big focal point for Michigan State’s in-state recruiting is the city of Detroit, and Coach Tucker is addressing that right away.
The Spartans will be hosting a trio of Cass Tech players to East Lansing on Tuesday including 2022 3-star lineman Jackson Pruitt and Deone Walker and 2023 4-star lineman Jalen Thompson. Cass Tech head coach Thomas Wilcher will also be there.
2022 in-state target Deone Walker will be in East Lansing tomorrow.
His Cass Tech head coach Thomas Wilcher, 2022 teammate Jackson Pruitt, & 2023 four-star teammate Jalen Thompson will also be at MSU on the same day.
One of Michigan’s top recruits for the 2023 class is set to visit campus next month.
Corey Robinson of 247Sports is reporting that four-star defensive end Jalen Thompson will visit Michigan State on June 1. Thompson plays for Detroit Cass Tech High School, and is ranked as the No. 3 prospect in the state of Michigan for the 2023 class by 247Sports.

Thompson is also ranked as the No. 15 strongside defensive end and No. 116 overall recruit in the nation in 247Sports composite rankings.
Michigan State was the first of many big-time schools to offer Thompson, with the Spartans extending a scholarship offer on Feb. 11. Since then, Thompson has also picked up scholarship offers from Michigan, Kentucky, Notre Dame, Georgia, Penn State and numerous Mid-American Conference (MAC) schools.
Keep an eye on the recruitment of Thompson as he is surely going to be a big target for the Spartans.
The Arizona Cardinals have ruled out two players and listed six others as questionable vs. the New York Giants in Week 14.
The New York Giants and Arizona Cardinals will square off on Sunday at MetLife Stadium and neither team is particularly healthy.
Although the Giants are optimistic, quarterback Daniel Jones (hamstring) has been listed as questionable. Linebacker Blake Martinez (back), cornerback Darnay Holmes (knee) and offensive lineman Matt Peart (ankle) are also questionable.
Things are no better for the Cardinals, who have listed wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins (neck/back) and running back Kenyan Drake (hip) as questionable.
Hopkins first appeared on the injury report this past Wednesday, but the team initially said his absence at practice was not injury related. He did not practice on Thursday and was limited on Friday.
Drake was added as a limited participant on Thursday and was limited again on Friday.
In addition to Hopkins and Drake, the Cardinals also listed linebacker Isaiah Simmons (neck/back), kicker Zane Gonzalez (back), offensive lineman Kevin Beachum (back) and linebacker DeVondre Campbell (ankle) as questionable.
Cornerback Jonathan Joseph (neck) and safety Jalen Thompson (ankle) have been ruled out.
“He’s a special player and the more he plays, the better he’s going to get, so it’s good to have him back,” said Cardinals DC Vance Joseph.
The Arizona Cardinals will be without linebacker Devon Kennard and cornerback Byron Murphy this weekend when they take on the Miami Dolphins in Week 9, but they will get safety Jalen Thompson back in the lineup.
Thompson has been out since Week 1. He injured his ankle on the second play of the season. Defensive coordinator Vance Joseph declared Thompson’s return to the lineup on Thursday when he spoke to the media.
“Jalen’s back,” he said, and explained they purposely held him out an extra week to make sure he was 100%. He was designated for return three weeks ago and probably could have played against the Seattle Seahawks.
He will be at full speed against Miami.
“He looked great in practice,” Joseph added, and he explained what Thompson’s return means for the defense. “He brings a speed factor to our defense that Budda (Baker) brings.”
He is expected to be back in the starting lineup at safety but he might get some playing time in a role he has not had yet with the Cardinals because of the absence of Murphy, who plays slot cornerback. Joseph suggested Thompson could be used at least some in that same role.
“J.T. brings an element of range and of tackling but he can also walk over slot, so we can use JT in a lot of positions,” he said.
In fact, Joseph believes he is on track to become a player of Budda Baker’s caliber.
“He’s not quite Budda yet, but he has some of those qualities as far as tackling and how fast he plays and his ability to walk over a slot and play man-to-man with comfort as a corner would,” he said. “This kid is a good football player and we have missed him.
“He’s a special player and the more he plays, the better he’s going to get, so it’s good to have him back.”
He has not played since the second play of the season.
The Arizona Cardinals get a starting defender back this week. After he was designated to return from injured reserve three weeks ago, safety Jalen Thompson was officially reinstated to the 53-man roster by the team on Wednesday.
Thompson only has played two defensive snaps all season. On the second play of the season in Week 1, he injured his ankle and did not return. He landed on injured reserve and has not played since then.
He had to be activated, as a player, once designated to return, has three weeks to be activated or he must miss the rest of the season.
It is uncertain if the Cardinals will immediately put him back in the starting lineup and have him play a full load. Deionte Thompson has worked his way into the starting lineup and has been solid. If they don’t want to give Jalen too much work early, we might see a rotation between both Thompsons.
When they did that last season as rookies, Deionte played in base packages and Jalen played in sub packages.
“It would be nice to get both of them back but both of them are day-to-day at this point,” Kliff Kingsbury said.
The Arizona Cardinals, coming off the bye week, return to work on Monday and will get some practice in. They could see reinforcements this week with players getting healthy.
Safety Jalen Thompson has already been designated to return from injured reserve and has been able to practice for the last couple of weeks. Williams has been on injured reserve since Week 2 but head coach Kliff Kingsbury said a couple of weeks ago he potentially could return after the bye.
Both might be able to come back and play against the Miami Dolphins this week, but Kingsbury wouldn’t say for sure.
“I’m hopeful,” he said of their return. “Both those guys we’ll get out there today and run them around and see where they are at.”
That would indicate that Williams will likely be designated to return, allowing him to return to practice.
Thompson likely will be back. This will be the third week since he was designated for return. Williams’ availability for the game is less certain.
“It would be nice to get both of them back but both of them are day-to-day at this point,” Kingsbury said.
It sounds like he will be a game-day decision as to whether he plays on Monday night against the Cowboys.
The Arizona Cardinals designated safety Jalen Thompson for return from injured reserve this week, which allowed him to practice. It appears the team will reactivate him over the weekend so he is eligible to play Monday night against the Dallas Cowboys.
However, it isn’t a sure thing that he will play.
“We want to smart with him to make sure he feels great and can do what he does out there,” head coach Kliff Kingsbury told reporters on Saturday. “We’re going to continue on the next couple of days and see where it ends up. I’m sure he’ll be out there Monday night trying it early and then we’ll take it from there.”
Thompson has missed four games and got hurt two snaps into the season.
If he is going to try and play Monday, it suggests the Cardinals plan on reinstating him to the roster. After that, it will be a case of whether or not he is active for the game.
