Key Cardinals rookie finally practicing; one starter missing Monday

Report from Howard Balzer on the Cardinals’ ‘bonus’ practice on Monday and who was practicing and who was not.

It was on Aug. 22, 88 days ago that Arizona Cardinals rookie defensive lineman Darius Robinson suffered a calf injury in the team’s final practice prior to the cut to 53 players.

Robinson was placed on injured reserve five days later and was then designated for return on Oct. 9. That inspired hope that he was trending toward being ready to play. That, of course, was not the case.

Robinson watched his fellow linemates during individual drills in that first practice and was listed on the injury report as limited, which has different meaning than players on the active roster.

Since then, Robinson has not practiced and during his 21-day window before being activated, he had to deal with the death of his mom. He was activated from injured reserve Oct. 28 with the window closing because not doing that would have made him unable to play for the remainder of the season.

Now, after being seen working on the side with the team’s sports performance staff in the days leading up to the Week 10 game against the Jets, there appears finally to be light at the end of the tunnel.

Head coach Jonathan Gannon told the media Monday morning, one hour before a “bonus” day of practice after returning from the bye, Robinson would be on the field. He did in fact participate in stretching and individual drills during the portion of practice open to the media. There will be no official injury report until Wednesday. The scheduled length of the practice was 65 minutes.

Gannon said, “When he’s out there, we’ll have a specific plan for him, but if he’s out there we feel good about him being out there.”

The even-keeled Gannon added, “It’ll be good to get him out there. It’s been a long time. He’s had a tough road. He had a tough injury and he’s working his tail off to get back out there. He wants to get back out there. He had a good week last week. The return-to-play (staff), all those people, did a good job with him. So we’ll take it one day at a time.”

Gannon said during the bye week, “We had multiple guys in here working, filling up the health bucket. He was obviously one of them. He had a good week. He did not have an off week.”

Understandably, Gannon would not speculate whether Robinson will be active for next Sunday’s game in Seattle.

When asked if he’ll be on a “pitch count” if deemed available to play, Gannon said, “One day at a time with that one. We’ll put the pieces together and do the thing we think is best to win the game.”

Missing from practice were safeties Jalen Thompson and Joey Blount. Thompson did not play against the Jets because of an ankle injury, while the reason for Blount’s absence is unknown.

Tackle Kelvin Beachum, who normally doesn’t practice on Wednesday, was on the field Monday.

As we figured after there was a visit to the Cardinals last Tuesday, also on the field was safety Andre Chachere, who was signed to the practice squad Monday. Chachere played 17 games for the Cardinals in 2023, but was released in the Aug. 27 cutdown to 53 players.

Cardinals DC Nick Rallis likes to blitz and bank on Budda Baker

Arizona Cardinals DC Nick Rallis is afforded the ability to blitz thanks to the sure open field tackling of safety Budda Baker

Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator Nick Rallis has determined that using blitz is the optimal way to frustrate opponents in the pass game. Still, the Cardinals haven’t been perfect against the pass, but safety Budda Baker has done diligence, making open field tackles to stifle offensive drives.

NFL trade deadline rumors hinted that Baker would be shipped off to another franchise. However, a move of that magnitude would drastically change the dynamic of the Cardinals defense.

Amongst NFL teams, the Cardinals rank No. 2 in blitz percentage and No. 4 with a 41.2 blitz percentage on third downs. Rallis has accepted that traditional man coverage and a pass rush without the extras will not work for his personnel group. So, like the good coaches in the NFL do, Rallis has made adjustments.

With Rallis sending extra defenders on the blitz, Baker has been asked to cover ground, and this has led to an increase in his tackle totals. Baker has 91 tackles this season and ranks No. 2 in that category amongst all NFL players. If not for Baker, where really would the Cardinals be?

On Sunday versus the New York Jets, expect Rallis to blitz quarterback Aaron Rodgers, and Baker to be in on many tackles versus the Jets’ wide receivers. If the Jets fall into down and distance the Cardinals will have a chance to tally up a few sacks and continue their winning streak.

Zaven Collins helps Cardinals sack Bears QB Caleb Williams 6 times

Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams was sacked six times in the Arizona Cardinals’ 29-9 win on Sunday.

The Arizona Cardinals sacked Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams six times in their 29-9 home win on Sunday.

Now at 5-4, the Cardinals are finding themselves defensively, helping to complement a thriving offensive attack.

Defensive coordinator Nick Rallis has worked in tandem with head coach Jonathan Gannon to produce more quarterback pressures this season, an area the Cardinals have struggled in over the last few years. Well, after producing a high volume of sacks on Sunday, the Cardinals seem to have found something in their defensive playbook.

Rallis is using a scheme that heavily depends on the athleticism of safeties Jalen Thompson and Budda Baker to cover ground. The use of man blitz, and Cover 1 robber schemes, creates tight windows for quarterbacks to throw in while simultaneously lessening the time quarterbacks have to make decisions in the pocket.

Gannon was well prepared to rattle Williams Sunday, a rookie not fully familiar with the shell coverage concepts used in the NFL. Williams felt the pocket collapsing all game long, and with the large deficit on the scoreboard, the one-dimensional Bears offense made it easy for the Cardinals to unleash the pressure.

Michigan State football defensive lineman shifting positions

A key MSU defensive lineman is shifting positions:

After a stellar true freshman season, fans are excited for what Jalen Thompson can bring to Michigan State football going forward. The Detroit Cass Tech product will be someone that is competing for a starting spot throughout the fall.

While Thompson worked as a rush end in the fall, it seems that he has shifted spots, working as a strong side defensive end to start fall camp.

There will be no NFL Supplemental draft in 2024

There will be no NFL Supplemental draft in 2024

The NFL often holds a supplemental draft during the summer for players who became eligible after the final date to enter the regular NFL Draft, or for players with special eligibility circumstances. However, the league will not hold a supplemental draft in 2024.

In a memo from the league obtained via ESPN, the NFL informed the 32 teams that there will not be a supplemental draft this year. It will mark the fourth time in five years that the supplemental draft, an optional activity in the collective bargaining agreement, will not take place.

The league did hold a supplemental draft in 2023, but neither of the two eligible players wound up being selected. Washington State safety Jalen Thompson was the last player selected in a supplemental draft, by the Arizona Cardinals in the fifth round back in 2019.

Budda Baker, Jalen Thompson left off top safeties list again

They are not included in Touchdown Wire’s list of the top 11 safeties in the NFL.

We have hit the part of the offseason in which lists and rankings rule the Internet. Touchdown Wire has begun its top players at each position series and began with safeties.

Doug Farrar ranked the top 11 safeties in the NFL and the list notably did not include either starting safety for the Arizona Cardinals — Budda Baker or Jalen Thompson.

Baker is coming off a slightly down year, playing in only 12 games last season, but he was selected to the Pro Bowl for the fifth consecutive season.

He consistently is recognized by coaches and players as one of the best safeties in the game but seemingly is left off every offseason ranking of the top safeties in the game.

He did not have an interception or a broken up pass last season, so this year might be the one when that makes the most sense.

Thompson has never cracked such a list, either, and that is after picking off four passes in 2023 and breaking up nine.

Of course, Thompson and Baker were the best defensive backs on one of the league’s worst pass defenses. Perhaps it makes sense.

2023 Cardinals Defensive Player of the Year: LB Kyzir White

White gets the edge over Jalen Thompson in this year’s 2023 player awards.

The Arizona Cardinals’ 2023 season is over and now we can look back at player and team performance. We are at the part of the offseason where awards and honors are beginning to be doled out.

We do the same for the Cardinals and their 2023 season.

Running back James Conner was the team’s MVP this season.

The team’s defensive player of the year isn’t as cut-and-dried.

In a close decision, it is linebacker Kyzir White, edging safety Jalen Thompson.

White set the tone for Arizona’s defense in 2023. Signed as a free agent last offseason and thrust into the “mike” linebacker role for the first time in his career, he was productive.

A torn biceps injury ended his season prematurely, but he still piled up stats.

Despite missing the final six games of the season, he still led the team with 90 tackles and nine tackles for loss.

He added a paid of sacks, an interception and three pass breakups. His physicality was noticed from the very first game.

Thompson had a fine season with 78 tackles, five tackles for loss, a sack, four interceptions, nine pass breakups and a forced fumble.

Thompson did more statistically across the board in 15 games but White gets the edge.
