Broncos met with WR Jalen Reagor at NFL combine

The Broncos interviewed TCU wide receiver Jalen Reagor at the NFL combine.

The Denver Broncos interviewed TCU wide receiver Jalen Reagor at the NFL combine this week, according to KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis.

Reagor (5-11, 206 pounds) has been compared to Curtis Samuel by NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein. Samuel was selected by the Carolina Panthers in the second round of the 2017 NFL draft.

During his three years with the Horned Frogs, Reagor caught 148 passes for 2,248 yards and 22 touchdowns. He also rushed 35 times for 324 yards and two more scores.

Reagor is projected to be selected sometime between the first and second rounds of April’s draft, according to Charlie Campbell of WalterFootball.com.

Reagor is considered the 33rd-best player in the draft and the fifth-best wide receiver, according to Luke Easterling’s 2020 NFL draft big board for Draft Wire. Alabama’s Jerry Jeudy (No. 8) and Henry Ruggs (No. 12), Oklahoma’s CeeDee Lamb (No. 9) and Colorado’s Laviska Shenault (No. 25) are the only WRs ranked higher than Reagor on Draft Wire’s big board.

The draft will take place in Las Vegas from April 23-25.

TCU receiver Jalen Reagor hardly saw accurate passes in 2019

Former TCU receiver Jalen Reagor saw an accurate pass just a little over a third of the time according to Pro Football Focus data compiled by NFL.com.

INDIANAPOLIS — If there is any particular statistic that shows former TCU Horned Frogs receiver Jalen Reagor had a tough time his junior year, it took Pro Football Focus to measure it.

According to PFF data compiled by NFL.com’s Graham Barfield, Reagor had the lowest instance of accurate passes thrown to him among the entire receiver class for the 2020 NFL Draft. The 5-11, 205-pounder saw an accurate pass 31% of the time.

No doubt having three quarterbacks take snaps for the Horned Frogs in Max Duggan, Alex Delton, and Michael Collins influenced that percentage, as well as TCU’s 5-7 record with a 3-6 mark in Big 12 play.

However, Reagor won’t blame his three signal callers for his down year of 43 catches for 611 yards and five touchdowns.

“I was say it was just rhythm,” Reagor told reporters at the NFL Scouting Combine Wednesday. “I was going back to practice and it was a different quarterback or just being like a receiver and a quarterback you have to have rhythm with your quarterback. And it was hard to get on track sometimes.”

Reagor had caught 72 passes for 1,061 yards and nine touchdowns in his sophomore season. The expectations were the son of former NFL defensive end Montae Reagor would exceed those numbers in his junior year, not fall below them.

However, Reagor took the opportunity to demonstrate he could excel in other areas as a receiver.

“I felt like it was time to show my real character and how that I can lead without the ball, lead without being I was getting the ball 12 times a game,” said Reagor. “So, I just felt like it was showing teams what I could without the ball.”

The Houston Texans already have a receiver with that type of character in three-time All-Pro DeAndre Hopkins. If the Texans choose to get younger at wideout and release Will Fuller, Reagor could be a mid-round target Houston could use to upgrade the position.

2020 NFL Combine: 7 WRs for the Eagles to watch

2020 NFL combine: 7 WRs for the Philadelphia Eagles to watch

The 2020 NFL Scouting Combine kicked off on Monday, but the most important part of the week – the workouts – begins tonight in prime time.

Eagles executive vice president/general manager Howie Roseman and his staff are projected to have 10 picks to work with during the NFL draft and with the goal being to retool and get younger, Philadelphia is set to infuse youth and talent.

With the deepest wide receiver class in draft history all in Indianapolis, here are 7 different wideouts for the Birds to watch at the Combine.

1. Chase Claypool, Notre Dame

A stud at Notre Dame, Claypool finished his final season in South Bend with 66 receptions for 1,037 yards and 13 touchdowns. At 6-4 and 238 pounds, Claypool will give Eagles fans Deja Vu about JJ Arcega-Whiteside, but Claypool is a big-bodied wide receiver who can create space, win the jump ball and could transition to tight end as well.

He can get better at route running and there are the questions about his speed, quickness, and ability to separate from NFL cornerbacks.

11 prospects who should dominate the scouting combine drills

These 11 players could see their stock soar at the scouting combine based on their ability to ace the athletic tests.

INDIANAPOLIS — People in and out of the NFL have denigrated the scouting combine drills as the “Underwear Olympics” for years, but those same people are sure on hand when it comes time for prospects to go through those drills every year. And yes, draft decisions are made on a guy’s 40-yard-dash time, broad jump, and bench press numbers more than some would have you believe.

There are a number of new drills this year, created and enacted to more closely mirror the on-field experience. Whether it’s old-school or new-wave stuff, here are 11 prospects who could really stand out at the 2020 combine.

Jordan Love, QB, Utah State

(Vasha Hunt-USA TODAY Sports)

Some evaluators have Love, who experienced an efficiency downturn in 2019 with 17 interceptions against 20 touchdown passes after a 32-touchdown, six-interception 2018, as a possible Next Patrick Mahomes based on his arm strength and athleticism. I believe there are too many legitimate questions about Love’s mechanics and overall form to make such comparisons just yet, but there’s absolutely no question that Love can sling the ball around. In the friendly confines of Lucas Oil Stadium, where he’ll be throwing different routes without any defensive pressure, Love could make a great impression on scouts, coaches, and personnel people who are already halfway to making that comparison in their minds.

“The most important thing to be is to be more consistent,” Love said this week about his own game. “You watch my film, there are some plays where I make an incredible throw, and the next thing you know, I miss a swing route on a checkdown. Being more consistent in all my throws, my footwork, in the pocket, under center, doing dropbacks and things like that. It’s something I’ve practiced since the season ended.”

Love should reap the benefits of that practice in the quarterback drills.

TCU WR Jalen Reagor senses ‘a lot of interest’ from Packers at combine

The Packers expressed interest in TCU speedster Jalen Reagor early on at the NFL Scouting Combine.

One of the best receivers in the 2020 draft class sensed plenty of interest from the Green Bay Packers during the early stages of the NFL Scouting Combine.

Jalen Reagor, TCU’s speedster, said he met with the receiver-needy Packers already in Indianapolis.

“I have talked to the Packers,” Reagor said, via Eric Edholm of Yahoo Sports. “I feel like there is a lot of interest. They seem like they like me. We watched some film. They seem pretty interested.”

The Packers should be seriously interested in a player like Reagor. He would help solve a major hole at receiver while also injecting a serious dose of speed into the offense.

Reagor, who weighed in at a solid (and somewhat unexpected) 206 pounds on Monday, will be in the running for the fastest player at the combine. He told Edholm he wants to run the 4.2- to 4.3-second range in the 40-yard dash.

A time that fast might send Reagor shooting up draft boards and out of Green Bay’s range at No. 30 overall in the first round. If he’s still available come the first round of April’s draft, Reagor figures to be a top option for GM Brian Gutekunst, who knows he needs to find more playmakers in the passing game for Aaron Rodgers.

Reagor didn’t produce big college stats but he has a chance to be a special NFL player. At times on tape, he looked like the collegiate version of Tyreek Hill. He has instant acceleration ability and rare separation speed down the field, and he gives off Stefon Diggs vibes with the way he moves within routes and tracks the ball as a vertical receiver.

The Packers will meet with most of the top receivers at some point or another during the combine. That’s how the event works. Teams meeting with a certain player isn’t necessarily news.

However, Reagor’s response to his meeting with the Packers appears noteworthy, especially as Gutekunst and his personnel staff comb through a special group of receivers at the combine. The Packers like the TCU star. And they should.

4-round Chargers mock draft, pre-NFL Scouting Combine Edition

Chargers Wire’s Gavino Borquez releases his latest four-round projections for the Los Angeles Chargers.

With the National Scouting Combine kicking off this week, the NFL draft picture has started to come into focus. As big boards become more evident, what might the Chargers do when the big day rolls around come April?

Below is our own four-round mock draft that sees Los Angeles get their future franchise quarterback, a weapon for him, some protection and an impactful cornerback.

Round 1, No. 6, Justin Herbert, QB, Oregon

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

This has been the most common pairing to this point, but Herbert to Los Angeles makes a lot of sense on many levels, as the team looks to find Philip Rivers’ replacement.

Herbert is a physical specimen, who has the skillset, traits and tools that coach Anthony Lynn is looking for in a signal-caller. The area of his game that gets scrutinized the most is primarily mental, but he took a leap last month at the Senior Bowl to defy those.

With the weapons around him, headlined by Keenan Allen, Mike Williams and Hunter Henry, as well an improvement to the offensive line (which can be addressed in free agency and rounds following the first) Herbert could really reach his full potential.

This week in Indianapolis, the interview process will be the most important part for Herbert. This will be his opportunity to show that he is capable of leading an NFL team and impress the coaching staff when they put him on the whiteboard.

Steelers have formal interview with TCU WR Jalen Reagor

The Steelers have met with one of the fastest receivers in the draft.

According to TCU wide receiver Jalen Reagor, one of his formal meetings at the NFL Scouting Combine was with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Reagon is one of the fastest and most exciting receiver prospects in a very deep wide receiver class.

This is an interesting meeting for the Steelers considering how highly regarded Reagor is. The Steelers don’t have a first-round pick so getting Reagor would likely require a trade up into the top second round at minimum.

The Steelers have invested heavily in the wide receiver position but no one would be shocked they did so again. The Steelers already have JuJu Smith-Schuster, Diontae Johnson and James Washington but none of them are the vertical threat Reagor is.

49ers meet with 2 top WRs at NFL combine

The 49ers’ search for a wide receiver in the NFL draft began early at the combine.

The order of the 49ers’ list of needs in the NFL draft is unclear, but they’ll very likely add a wide receiver in the first couple days for the third year in a row. They’ve already met with a pair of the draft’s top wide receivers at the NFL combine.

LSU’s Justin Jefferson and TCU’s Jaelen Reagor both said in their combine press conferences that the 49ers were among teams they’d met with.

Jefferson was exceptionally productive for the national champion Tigers last season as a junior. He posted 111 catches for 1,540 yards and 18 touchdowns. At 6-1, 202 pounds, he’d bring a combination of size and playmaking ability the 49ers don’t have on their roster going into the offseason.

Reagor is a much different receiver than Jefferson. He’s a touch shorter at 5-11, but weighs in around 206 pounds. He also had a more consistently productive college career. Reagor posted 33 catches for 576 yards and eight touchdowns as a freshman for the Horned Frogs. He backed that up with 72 catches, 1,061 yards and nine touchdowns as a sophomore – all career highs. His junior year was still strong despite a downtick in productivity. He had 43 catches for 611 yards and five touchdowns.

It’ll be interesting to see what type of receiver the 49ers do target in this year’s draft. Jefferson is a good route runner who utilizes his size well, while Reagor is better at stretching the field vertically and making plays after the catch. San Francisco could use either style of playmaker in their offense.

Early meetings don’t necessarily mean the team is targeting either one of Jefferson or Reagor. These meetings are the 49ers’ first chance to get to know the prospects – an important step in the evaluation process, especially for a team that values team culture so highly.

Takeaways

  • We’ve mentioned Brandon Aiyuk as a potential option for Los Angeles. Even though Aiyuk is one of the shorter wide receivers in this year’s class, the 80-inch wingspan is very enticing for him. The combination of his explosiveness and the length could pay huge dividends at the next level.
  • Jalen Reagor has also been highlighted as a potential option. Reagor weighing in at 206 pounds at 5-foot-10 is a plus, but just wait until he runs in the 4.3’s with that frame.
  • Denzel Mims hasn’t been highlighted yet, but he is definitely an option. His athleticism, catch radius and body control are intriguing traits as a deep threat. Mims’ height/build is very similar to Keenan Allen.
  • KJ Hamler is one of the more smaller wideouts at 5-foot-8 and 178 pounds, but he would be a much-needed big-play threat for the Chargers. His speed and yards after the catch ability is second-to-none. Look out for Hamler to run in the 4.3’s.
