Don’t expect 49ers to move on from Jake Moody despite nightmare game

Jake Moody isn’t going anywhere for the 49ers.

San Francisco 49ers kicker Jake Moody didn’t have his best game as a pro Sunday in Tampa Bay.

In fact, despite making the game-winning kick on the final play of the game, Moody might have had his worst overall game as a pro.

Moody missed three kicks during the 49ers’ tumultuous 23-20 win over the Buccaneers in his first game back from a high ankle sprain he suffered in Week 5. Despite the rough outing, head coach Kyle Shanahan doesn’t appear ready to move on from his kicker.

His answer when asked about Moody in a Monday conference call reflected his “you’re only as good as your last kick” sentiment from his postgame press conference Sunday.

“Not much different,” Shanahan said Monday. “He missed three kicks. I thought it wasn’t the easiest place to kick in. The wind was weird, especially the direction that he missed the stuff. It was different. But it was a few big kicks and came back and hit his first game winner on a walk off. So, thought he finished it well and we’ll move on to next week with it.”

Entering Sunday’s game, Moody had only one miss on the season – a 55-yard try late in Week 3 against the Los Angeles Rams. Last season he missed multiple kicks in a game only once, and that came in a Week 6 loss to the Cleveland Browns where one of his misses was a game-winning try.

The 49ers’ willingness to put Moody back out for another field goal try was a sign of the faith they have in their 2023 third-round pick. Ideally the 49ers offense will start converting more drives into touchdowns, but they’ll continue relying on Moody until they do.

49ers explain what happened in sideline scuffle during Week 10 victory

Here’s what Jake Moody, Taybor Pepper and Deebo Samuel had to say after their scuffle during Sunday’s game:

Tempers flared on the San Francisco 49ers’ sideline during the team’s 23-20 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.

After kicker Jake Moody missed his third kick, wide receiver Deebo Samuel had some words for the 49ers’ second-year kicker. Long snapper Taybor Pepper wasn’t happy with whatever Samuel had to say, and got in the receiver’s face. Samuel responded by striking Pepper in the throat.

There was more yelling between the two players, but no further physical escalation.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan didn’t appear bothered by the incident in his press conference after the 49ers’ victory.

“I don’t have much of a take because I didn’t see any of it,” Shanahan said. “So I just got told about it – but probably an obvious one, guys frustrated and something probably happened and you know brothers scuffle a little bit. I didn’t see any of it, so I don’t know how bad it was, but something I’m not too worried about, we’ll fix it. If it hasn’t been fixed already, we’ll fix it on the plane and go back to loving each other tomorrow.”

Samuel had similar sentiments after the game, which the 49ers won thanks to a 44-yard walk-off field goal by Moody.

Nothing, to be honest with you,” Samuel said. “Just frustrated in the heat of battle. It was a close game and I kinda got out of character a little bit. But I’ll talk to Moody and we’ll get past it.”

Samuel and Pepper both acknowledged Samuel wasn’t saying anything out of line to Moody, and Pepper said his only goal was to stand up for his kicker.

Just a high-emotion game,” Pepper said. “Football’s high-emotion, and Jake was having a little rough patch there. I was just standing up for Jake, because there was still time on the clock. The game wasn’t over and everybody knows what happened at the end.

“It’s not over until the clock says zero. They all count three when it’s a field goal. And I always got four’s (Moody’s) back.”

Ultimately there weren’t any adverse affects for Moody. He made the 44-yard game-winner as time expired and helped the 49ers get home with a win. He said he’s not concerned about the incident.

“Like I said, it’s in the heat of the moment – it happens,” Moody said. “I do have to make those kicks at the end of the day, so that’s all I’m focused on. I’m not worried on anything like that.”

It’s understandable if some frustrations were mounting. The weather was in the high 80s at kickoff in Tampa Bay and the 49ers were in the midst of a potential collapse in an extremely important game. The team has also had a slew of frustrating losses in 2024, and this one was on the verge of being another.

Chances are this specific incident won’t linger. The larger problem for the 49ers will be avoiding more instances where players have reason for frustration on the sideline.

49ers practice squad move good news for Jake Moody

The 49ers waived released kicker Anders Carlson from their practice squad.

After opening the practice window for players like Christian McCaffrey and Jon Feliciano early in the bye week, more reinforcements could be on the way for the San Francisco 49ers.

On Tuesday, the 49ers released kicker Anders Carlson from their practice squad. Carlson replaced Matthew Wright who replaced injured kicker Jake Moody.

Via @tompelissero on Twitter:

In two games with the 49ers, the second-year kicker formerly of the Green Bay Packers made five field goals on five attempts and three extra points on four attempts. His lone miss with the 49ers came on an extra point.

Carlson’s release could be a positive sign for Moody’s return. On Monday, Moody was spotted back at practice with the 49ers, according to Nick Wagoner of ESPN.

Via @nwagoner on Twitter:

In Week 5, Moody injured his ankle and missed the remainder of the game after attempting to make a tackle during kickoff coverage. Moody was later labeled with a high ankle sprain.

Christian McCaffrey return not the only good injury news for 49ers after Bye week

Good injury news for the 49ers, non-Christian McCaffrey edition:

Health was always going to be a major factor for the San Francisco 49ers repeating as NFC champions, and Monday after their Bye week they took some positive steps in that department.

Not only did running back Christian McCaffrey return to the practice field for the first time since Week 1, wide receiver Jauan Jennings, kicker Jake Moody and offensive lineman Jon Feliciano were all back in action according to reporters on site at the SAP Performance Center.

Jennings suffered a hip injury in Week 6 and missed Weeks 7 and 8. His absence was magnified by the loss of wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk during Week 7. Jennings has 25 catches for 404 receiving yards and three receiving touchdowns in six games. He’ll become a big-time target for quarterback Brock Purdy once he’s back in action, but he’ll also provide a boost in the run game thanks to his versatility and blocking ability.

Feliciano joined McCaffrey in having his 21-day practice window opened. He’s been out since undergoing knee surgery in the preseason. He was expected to miss about half the year, so the timeline for his return lines up. It’s unlikely we’ll see Feliciano starting, but he’s a high-quality depth piece on the interior of the offensive line that gives San Francisco some flexibility if they have injury issues or production problems on the OL.

Moody never went on IR after suffering a high ankle sprain while making a tackle on a kick return in Week 5. San Francisco’s kickers, Matthew Wright and Anders Carlson, went a combined eight-for-eight on field goals and six-for-seven on extra points in their three games.

Carlson is still on the practice squad, and the team may utilize him again in Week 10 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers depending on how Moody responds to his return to action.

49ers injury update: RB Jordan Mason in practice to open Week 7

Jordan Mason practiced for the 49ers on Wednesday. Here’s the full, ugly practice report:

The San Francisco 49ers got mixed injury news overall to start their week of practice ahead of a Week 7 showdown with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Perhaps the most positive sign on a crowded practice participation report was the presence of running back Jordan Mason who suffered an AC joint sprain in his shoulder during the 49ers’ Week 6 victory. It’s unclear whether he’ll be able to play in Sunday’s game, but the fact he was on the practice field as a limited participant to start the week means his arrow is at least pointing in the right direction after a couple extra days off.

Typically the extra time off will benefit a team like the 49ers that needs to get some additional time to get healthy. While the few days off did help Mason and a couple other players, San Francisco is still in a bad way overall from an injury perspective.

11 players were on the Wednesday practice report to open Week 7, although two of them were on veteran rest days. A couple players who weren’t on the injury report for Week 6 showed up on the participation report for Week 7, putting the 49ers in a potentially tough spot entering their Super Bowl rematch.

Here’s what the Wednesday participation report looked like:

Did not participate

DT Maliek Collins (knee)
WR Jauan Jennings (hip)
K Matthew Wright (shoulder, back)
K Jake Moody (ankle)
LT Trent Williams (not injury related – resting player)
DE Leonard Floyd (not injury related – resting player)

The Collins and Jennings absences were unexpected. Neither player came up either time when head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke with reporters in the aftermath of Week 6. Collins is the team’s best interior defensive lineman, and Jennings is a reliable third WR for quarterback Brock Purdy. Missing either player could spell disaster for the 49ers on Sunday.

Limited participation

DT Jordan Elliott (knee)
CB Darrell Luter (pelvis)
RB Jordan Mason (shoulder)
S Malik Mustapha (ankle)
WR Deebo Samuel (wrist)

It’s not immediately clear when Samuel hurt his wrist, but a limited session to start the week is a good sign overall. The same goes for Mustapha and Mason who were both hurt in Week 6. Elliott missed the Seahawks game. His presence Wednesday is a plus, especially given Collins’ status.

Full participation

LB Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles (calf)
WR Ricky Pearsall (chest)
CB Charvarius Ward (knee)

Ward missed Week 6 because of a knee bruise and Flannigan-Fowles has missed the last two games with his injury.

49ers release WR from practice squad to make room for new K

The former Panthers pass catcher was signed to the 49ers practice squad before the start of the season.

The San Francisco 49ers will have their third kicker of the season step in on Sunday when they host the Kansas City Chiefs in a Super Bowl rematch. Following Jake Moody’s ankle injury, his replacement, Matthew Wright suffered a shoulder injury on Thursday Night Football.

On Tuesday, the 49ers added kicker Anders Carlson to the practice squad along with veteran safety Adrian Amos. With Carlson and Amos set to join the practice squad, the 49ers released wide receiver Terrace Marshall Jr. from the practice squad.

Marshall Jr. was signed to the 49ers practice before the start of the season after he was released from the Carolina Panthers. Marshall Jr, was a second-round pick by the Panthers in the 2021 NFL draft.

Another injury forces 49ers to add another kicker

The 49ers are signing yet another kicker after another injury on a kickoff.

The San Francisco 49ers may need a third kicker in as many weeks after Jake Moody was hurt on a kickoff against the Cardinals in Week 5, and his replacement Matthew Wright was hurt on a kickoff against the Seahawks in Week 6.

Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported the 49ers are adding former Packers kicker Anders Carlson to their practice squad.

Wright suffered a shoulder injury on the Seahawks final kick return Thursday night. The kicker stepped in to try and knock the kick returner out of bounds and dislocated his shoulder. Wright’s shoulder did pop back in according to head coach Kyle Shanahan and there’s a chance he could play in Week 7 against the Kansas City Chiefs.

The chance Wright plays is why Carlson will join the 49ers’ practice squad instead of their active roster. Wright drilled all three of his field goal attempts and all three extra points in Seattle, so it stands to reason the club would want to move forward with him if possible.

Carlson spent last season with the Packers where he connected on 27 of 33 field goal attempts and 34 of 39 extra points. He was a perfect 20-for-20 on field goals inside of 40 yards, and just 7-of-13 on kicks beyond that range. His longest make came from 53 yards out.

There’s no word on a corresponding practice squad move. Matt Barrows of the Athletic reported neither Wright nor Moody were seen at Monday’s bonus practice.

The 49ers host the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday at Levi’s Stadium.

49ers make decision on Jake Moody replacement

The veteran kicker has kicked for the Steelers, Jaguars, Chiefs and Panthers over 24 career games.

On Sunday, the San Francisco 49ers had to play the second half with their starting kicker sidelined.

While in kickoff return coverage, Jake Moody attempted to make a tackle against the Arizona Cardinals and suffered an ankle injury that required him to be carted to the locker room and be ruled out for the remainder of the 49ers’ 24-23 loss.

After the game, head coach Kyle Shanahan revealed Moody suffered a high ankle injury.

With only four days between Sunday’s loss to the Cardinals and the 49ers’ upcoming Thursday Night Football game against the Seattle Seahawks, the 49ers needed to make a decision for their kicker position.

On Tuesday morning, the 49ers reportedly signed veteran kicker Matthew Wright according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. Wright won a “kicker derby,” over Pelissero.

Via @TomPelissero on Twitter:

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the 49ers also worked out kickers Anders Carlson, Riley Patterson, Matt Coghlin and Randy Bullock.

Via @AdamSchefter on Twitter:

Over 24 career games, Wright has kicked for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Jacksonville Jaguars, Kansas City Chiefs and Carolina Panthers. Wright has made 40-of-47 field goals in his career with his career-long coming from 59 yards.

49ers working out 4 kickers after Jake Moody injury

Here’s how the 49ers are figuring out life without Jake Moody.

The San Francisco 49ers will have to work fast to replace kicker Jake Moody.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan on Monday in a conference call told reporters that Moody suffered a high ankle sprain during the team’s loss to the Arizona Cardinals. Moody stepped in to make a special teams tackle and got his ankle caught underneath him.

Shanahan said the club is working out four kickers, but didn’t know exactly which four players would be coming in for a tryout.

It won’t be easy to replace Moody, who was 13-of-14 on field goals this season with his only miss coming from beyond 50 yards. He’s also a perfect 12-of-12 on extra points.

San Francisco has gone through similar issues a couple times under Shanahan. In 2019 they signed Chase McLaughlin for three games after kicker Robbie Gould got hurt. In 2020 they had to use K Tristan Vizcaino for one game, and in 2021 they had Joey Slye for three games.

This figures to be a longer stint than any of those though. High ankle sprains don’t generally heal quickly, and given the 49ers’ penchant for coming up short in the red zone, whoever they sign will immediately become one of their most important players as they aim to navigate the early-season rut they’ve been unable to climb out of.

49ers K Jake Moody suffers ankle sprain, likely to miss Week 6 vs Seahawks

49ers K Jake Moody suffers ankle sprain, likely to miss Week 6 vs Seahawks

The Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers both suffered brutal home upset losses to opponents who each had only one win going into Sunday. Seattle fell 29-20 to the New York Giants, while the 49ers were upset 24-23 by the Arizona Cardinals.

Unfortunately for San Francisco, a game isn’t the only thing they lost this weekend. Head coach Kyle Shanahan announced after the loss that kicker Jake Moody suffered an ankle sprain. While a concrete timeline is uncertain, it appears he is going to miss a few games.

If what Shanahan says is true, then the 49ers will assuredly be without their second-year kicker when they roll into Seattle on Thursday night.

Moody connected on 21-of-25 field goal attempts last season, and set a short-lived Super Bowl record with a 55-yard field goal. Of course, Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker broke it by two yards one quarter later.

So far on the year, Moody has been stellar, making 11-of-12 field goals, including both attempts against the Cardinals. His injury is yet another in an ever-growing list for San Francisco in 2024.
