The Houston Texans continue to deal with injuries as they face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 9.

The Texans ruled defensive tackle Hassan Ridgeway questionable with an ankle injury. Houston also ruled linebacker Jake Hansen questionable with a hand injury.

Ridgeway had been activated from injured reserve and returned to the team last week against the Carolina Panthers. Ridgeway left the game with a tackle.

Texans LB Jake Hansen describes similarities of coach Lovie Smith, LB coach Miles Smith

Houston Texans rookie linebacker Jake Hansen notes the similarities between coach Lovie Smith and LB coach Miles Smith, his son.

Lovie Smith did not recruit Jake Hansen to play at the University of Illinois, but the 6-1, 230-pound linebacker played 35 of his 40 games for the Big Ten school under Smith.

Hansen also played while Miles Smith was on the Illinois staff. With five seasons logged with the Smith family, Hansen knows how similar father and son can be.

“Coach Miles grew up in that defense so he knows it better than anyone,” Hansen told reporters Sept. 1 “He coaches us hard and he coaches as well. I had a little experience with him at Illinois so I knew what he was about and knew what he stood for so coming here was an easy decision for me as an undrafted free agent.”

Hansen tallied 274 combined tackles, 28.5 tackles for loss, 8.0 sacks, three interceptions, 12 forced fumbles, and seven fumble recoveries during all six seasons at Illinois.

According to Hansen, the linebackers coach is more relatable — but only because of his age proximity to the players.

Said Hansen: “There are similarities, they both know the system super well. They have a little bit different coaching style. He’s (Miles) is a little bit younger so we can relate to him. He’s a great coach.”

The Big Ten’s top five Inside linebackers heading into 2021

Do any #Buckeyes inside linebackers belong among the Big Ten’s best?

Ohio State football kicks off in less than a month, and we have been rolling through the best of the best of the Big Ten at each position. We have already completed our list of top five quarterbacks, running backs, wide receiverstight endsoffensive tacklesguards, centers, and defensive ends.

The Buckeyes lost all three of their starting linebackers from the 2020 season and judging by the lack of presence on this list, it’s pretty clear someone will need to step up.

As always, we give you this list with more disclaimers than a credit card terms and conditions section. It’s early way before the ball is put down anywhere for real, and you’ll see injuries, breakout players, and disappointments.

Illinois LB Jake Hansen declares for 2021 NFL draft

Illinois linebacker Jake Hansen is leaving school early to enter the 2021 NFL draft

Illinois’ Jake Hansen announced via his social media Monday that he is passing on a potential extra year of eligibility and declaring for the 2021 NFL draft.

Listed at 6-1, 230 pounds, Hansen’s 10 career forced fumbles are tied for third-most in program history, behind only Illinois legends Simeon Rice (13) and Whitney Mercilus (11).

A linebacker with a knack for forcing a turnover, Hansen’s 14 takeaways over the last two seasons are the most of any player in the nation.

Hansen played and started in eight games in 2020 and has been described as an excellent tackler. He led Illinois this season in tackles (68), tackles for loss (10.0), interceptions (2), pass breakups (2) and forced fumbles.

His production should be attractive to NFL teams.

Scouting the Illini ahead of facing Ohio State

Illinois is on a two-game win streak but now must face Ohio State this weekend. We scout the Illini ahead of the game Saturday.

UPDATE: Ohio State’s game against Illinois has been canceled because of a COVID-19 outbreak within the OSU football program.

Before Ohio State takes the field against its next opponent, we always go back and review some of the tape and scout them. This week, it’s Illinois. The Fighting Illini have had an up and down season. For the first three weeks, they looked like one of the worst teams in the Big Ten. However, a win against Rutgers and then Nebraska has Illinois confident and looking better. It starts with the head coach Lovie Smith sho sets the tone for the entire team, beard or not.

It wasn’t until the Nebraska game that the Illini were really a balanced team. It all starts at quarterback. The situation under center has been extremely fluid to say the least. Some of it is due to COVID-19, but some of it is that each of the three quarterbacks I watched provide different things. I will assume Brandon Peters will start, but that doesn’t mean the others won’t see playing time. With that, we start with the first scouting note.

NEXT … Three quarterbacks and three skillsets
