WATCH: Big Ten Network analyst explains resurgence of Phil Longo’s Wisconsin offense

Big Ten Network analyst and former Michigan tight end Jake Butt took to the video board this week to break down Wisconsin’s recent resurgence, specifically on the offensive side of the football.

That resurgence has seen point totals of 52 and 42 over the last two weeks in the Badgers’ blowout victories over Purdue and Rutgers, respectively. The unit has suddenly found a balance with RB Tawee Walker running the ball effectively and QB Braedyn Locke improving by the week.

Butt explained some of the reasons for Wisconsin’s night-and-day improvement on the offensive side of the football:

“It starts with the run game, and they’re finding something with Tawee Walker,” Butt began. “Well, off that run game you can start to affect the linebackers with play-action. Tawee has been a physical back, Rutgers knows they have to come downhill — bang, we’re going to rip a post right in that vacated area.”

His demonstration continued to show the different concepts and schemes Longo can build off of a strong, successful, downhill rushing attack. It also continued to show Locke’s improvement under center and his ability to threaten defenses sideline-to-sideline.

Here is the full two-minute breakdown:

Butt went on to stress the importance of the Badgers’ upcoming trip to Northwestern.

“The big question was ‘who are they going to be as a team?'” he continued. “Luke Fickell comes in and he wanted to reidentify, offensively, defensively. And that’s why these past two weeks, and this weekend, are so important. Because you talk about Wisconsin playing those opponents, now all of the sudden it’s ‘Penn State has to play Wisconsin, Oregon has to play Wisconsin.’ They’ve become a dangerous team there in the middle of the conference.”

Wisconsin is next on the field on Saturday at noon ET, 11 a.m. CT against Northwestern. Another decisive victory would build substantial momentum entering a big-time home matchup with top-ranked Penn State on Oct. 26.

Big Ten Network analyst Jake Butt thinks USC will compete for conference title

USC fans, Jake Butt might be your favorite new Big Ten Network commentator.

USC football fans might have a new favorite commentator at the Big Ten Network. Jake Butt, who played for Michigan and is now an analyst at BTN, said at Big Ten media days on Wednesday that “USC will be competing for a Big Ten championship.” He is convinced that Lincoln Riley’s coaching staff changes on the defensive side of the ball will make a big difference for the Trojans. Butt thinks Nebraska and USC will make big forward strides in the conference this season.

Jake Butt seems to have grasped how good D’Anton Lynn was at UCLA one year ago, quickly transforming the Bruins from mediocre to excellent on defense. If Lynn could do that at UCLA, he can surely do the same — if not better — at USC. The Trojans should have a solid offense this year. It might not be the best offense they or Lincoln Riley have ever had, but if the offense can average 30 points per game and Lynn brings along the defense the way he improved UCLA one year ago, USC should deliver very good results.

Jake Butt hails Rutgers football – ‘they are tough and they are disciplined’

Jake Butt and Joshua Perry praise Rutgers football on Stadium.

With one of the top recruiting classes in the Big Ten and all of college football, Rutgers football is certainly trending in the right direction. Two national college football analysts who cover the Big Ten certainly see it that way.

Speaking on ‘Red Corner Blue Corner‘ on the Stadium streaming network, former Ohio State linebacker Joshua Perry and Michigan tight end Jake Butt discussed the Rutgers incoming class.

Asked if he is surprised that Rutgers head coach [autotag]Greg Schiano[/autotag] has pulled in one of the top recruiting classes in the nation, Butt said he wasn’t.

Also an analyst with the Big Ten Network, Butt sees this recruiting class as momentum for Rutgers, saying that “this is an extremely dangerous team.” Rutgers finished last year 7-6 (3-6 Big Ten) and with a win over Miami in the Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl.

“Rutgers is a low-hanging fruit and a punching bag for those that may not follow college football as a whole. But when you watch the tape, they – especially last year – were and are a good football team, and they are tough and they are disciplined,” Butt said on Stadium.

“And you’d be surprised. You cannot say that about everyone across the conference or across college football as a whole. You look at their toughest two opponents, they’re in that game, fourth-and-2 versus Michigan in the fourth quarter. There were a few missed opportunities versus Ohio State, where had they hit those, that game might be completely different.

“JP, they finished 7-6 and after the bowl game. ESPN, had them with the fourth hardest scheduled nationally, OK? Eight of their opponents finished with a bowl record. That’s pretty damn good. Okay, that’s good for a lot of teams, but that’s good for what Schiano is up against at Rutgers. I think he’s a great coach. I think he’s extremely honest with his players, and he’s shared that with us in some of our coaching meetings.”

In the updated rankings on Saturday, On3 has Rutgers with a top 10 class in the nation. Rivals and 247Sports also have Rutgers in the top 10 nationally.

Big Ten Network says Rutgers football has momentum ahead of Saturday’s spring game

The Big Ten Network analyzed Rutgers football ahead of Saturday’s annual spring game.

Rutgers football appears to have generated some real buzz around the Big Ten, following last season’s bowl win and winning record. And according to the Big Ten Network, Rutgers could be ready to take the next step in their rebuild.

And ahead of Saturday’s annual spring game, Rutgers football has the Big Ten Network optimistic about what 2024 might look like for the Scarlet Knights. Analyst Jake Butt, in talking with host Rick Pizzo, sees plenty of upward trajectory for Rutgers football.

Last year, Rutgers finished the 2023 season 7-6 and with a win over Miami in the Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl. The winning record and bowl win were the first that Rutgers has achieved since 2014.

In taking a significant step forward in their rebuild, Rutgers and head coach Greg Schiano clearly have caught attention throughout the rest of the Big Ten. Butt, a former tight end at Michigan, said that Rutgers is a team to watch heading towards the fall.

“They might have the largest momentum going into the Big Ten, into this season for everything you just mentioned in really,” Butt said on the Big Ten Network this week.

“They scared Ohio State – they were in that game last year! There was self-inflicted they could have easily won that game. They were in the game at Michigan before Mike Sainristil intercepted and went Four a touchdown) on the fourth down. play.

“So Schiano has taken this program and slowly built out the identity of who he wants this to be, which is: Let’s have a run first physical offense and let’s play great defense and you look at the contents of spring ball and say the pieces are in play for them to do that.”

Rutgers returns most of their pieces on both sides of the ball, giving them what arguably might be the most experienced roster in the Big Ten.

They key for Rutgers will be quarterback play, something that Butt and Pizzo touch on in their segment.

WATCH: Big Ten analyst has Badgers linebacker in his top 30

Badgers linebacker is considered one of the best overall athletes in the Big Ten

The official start of the Luke Fickell era is closing in and one of his defensive athletes was ranked in the top 30 Big Ten players by analyst Jake Butt. The former Michigan tight end has linebacker Maema Njongmeta as his 24th ranked overall athlete in the conference.

Njongmeta led Wisconsin with 95 total tackles, including 3.5 sacks, over 13 contests in 2022. He’s expected to be one of their defensive leaders again this year in a new scheme under Mike Tressel.

The linebacker is currently sidelined following surgery on his right hand, but he’s expected to be back at practice soon.

Njongmeta and the Badgers are set to start their 2023 campaign Sept. 2 at home against Buffalo.

Jake Butt shares story about Jim Harbaugh being forward-thinking

This is beyond a cool story! #GoBlue

No coach in college (or pro) football is like Jim Harbaugh. Perhaps Mike Leach was in terms of uniqueness, and likewise, Harbaugh dances to his own drumbeat.

Whether it was the proliferation of satellite camps to his one-time transfer rule to his much-derided recruiting with sleepovers (which had a near 100% hit-rate, by the way), the Michigan football head coach always thinks outside the box.

And one of his former players has a story to further illustrate how.

Jake Butt (who we partnered with in 2021) played for Jim Harbaugh for two years in Ann Arbor, and there was immediately a stark contrast between him and his predecessor, Brady Hoke. One of the seemingly oddball things that Harbaugh did once arriving in 2015 was instituting four-hour practices — grueling to be sure, but there was a method behind his madness.

Butt explained on Twitter:

Our first spring ball as a team after he got hired he told us we needed to improve across the board (he was right). So per NCAA rules each team is allocated X amount of hours per week and the maximum per day was 4 hours.

Most teams set it up to be 1.5 hours of meetings and 2.5 hours of practice. Harbaugh told us you get better at football by playing football. So he confirmed all 4 hours could be spent on the field. Not only that, and here’s the grey area, it was 4 hours per each individual player.

So he divided the team into 2- an A and a B team. The B team would practice by themselves for two hours from 1-3 pm. Then the A team would join them from 3-5 for two hours. By then the individuals on the B team had completed their 4 hours, so the A team stayed out for the last 2 hours by themselves.

That meant the coaches were out for 6 hours total coaching both teams. We got an insane amount of reps.

He’d call us up at the 3 hour mark and make a point: he didn’t need 100 guys. If you didn’t want to be here then don’t be here. He needed 30 warriors. 11 on offense. 11 on defense. And a few more in special teams. We could win with that. The 4 hour practices, and it’s a point I’ve emphasized on here, we’re a psychological experiment.

Everyone says they want to win. Everyone says they want to play in the NFL. Everyone says they want to contribute. In that fourth hour your words meant nothing and it became clear who could be counted on.

That first spring, to me, is the first instance of belief being instilled into the renewed Michigan program. There is a price to success. We didn’t achieve the ultimate success, but what I love about the current program is how they embrace challenge. The guys don’t blind. The leadership is phenomenal. It’s organic. Those kind of things can’t be quantified or measured, but it’s clear as day when you see it.

His methods worked. Michigan went from being 5-7 in 2014 to 10-3 immediately — in a year where many pundits said that Harbaugh’s best-case scenario in 2015 would be to get the team to simple bowl eligibility.

It may have taken him some time to get over the hump and the Wolverines are still working toward a national championship, but it’s another indication that there’s no one who quite thinks outside the box as much as Jim Harbaugh.

Former Michigan tight end Jake Butt has high praise for C.J. Stroud

Jake Butt sees C.J. Stroud as the clear No. 1 pick. #GoBucks

There are very few things in this world that the Ohio State and Michigan faithful can agree upon, especially when it comes to football. After former Wolverine Braylon Edwards claimed things were falling apart in Columbus, another former U of M grad was heaping praise on Buckeye quarterback C.J. Stroud.

Former Michigan star and current Big Ten Network analyst, Jake Butt, made his thoughts clear on Stroud. And they are overwhelmingly positive.

“The dude has all the talent in the world. There’s not a throw on the field that he can’t make,” said Butt.

We’ll find out soon enough if the Carolina Panthers agree with Butt or if they feel a different quarterback would be a better fit to lead the franchise, but it’s clear who the pick would be if it were up to the former Wolverine.

In an earlier segment on BTN, Butt shared his thoughts on the Ohio State quarterback room as a whole. Again, nothing but positivity saying “They are a quarterback factory at this point.”

I never thought I’d see the day, but it feels good to have someone on the other side of the fence saying good things about the Buckeyes. But then again, Butt is a Central Ohio native, so maybe it makes a little sense.
