Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence provides update following Texans game

Trevor Lawrence has responded since leaving Sunday’s game due to the hit by Azeez Al-Shaair.

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence seems to be fine after leaving Sunday’s 23-20 loss against the Houston Texans in the second quarter.

Lawrence, who was knocked out by Texans linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair after trying to slide for a first down, tweeted late Sunday evening that he was fine after being carted off.

After the hit, a brawl ensued between Texans and Jaguars players. Tight end Evan Engram shoved Al-Shaair to the grass and the two sides went back and forth toward the Jaguars’ sideline.

The fight got so bad that Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans had to come on the field to grab Al-Shaair and try to calm the sixth-year veteran.

That’s not what we’re coaching,” Ryans said postgame. “We want to be smart in everything we do and not hurt the team, (not) get a penalty there. We just have to be smarter when the quarterback is going down.”

Al-Shaair was ejected for his role in the incident. The fighting didn’t stop there since the linebacker continued to jaw back at Jaguars players while being escorted off the field. He ripped off his helmet and tried to go after offensive lineman Brandon Scherff but was restrained by several teammates.

Al-Shaair also exchanged words with Jaguars fans after linebacker Will Anderson Jr. was hit in the helmet by a water bottle.

“Azeez is a smart player, a really great leader for us,” Ryans said. “We felt his presence not being there. His loss, it really affected us on the defensive side.”

This isn’t Al-Shaair’s first time getting into an altercation with an opposing player. During Week 2’s win over the Chicago Bears, he punched running back Roschon Johnson on the sidelines.

This came after he had a questionable hit on quarterback Caleb Williams when Williams was sprinting toward the sideline.

Al-Shaair was also at the center of a play that led to Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen having to leave for a series after hitting his head on the turf, though the All-Pro pass was already going down before Al-Shaair made contact.

“My prayers go to Trevor and I really hope and pray he’s OK,” Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud said. “Praying to his family as well. Still rocking with Azeez. I don’t think that was his intent.”

Lawrence finished the game 4-of-10 passing for 41 yards and an interception before leaving. Mac Jones closed out the final two quarters and threw for 235 yards and two touchdowns.

The Texans will be on a bye next week before taking on the Miami Dolphins on Dec. 15.

The Jaguars coaching staff maintained their stance that a quarterback competition still exists between rookie Trevor Lawrence and veteran Gardner Minshew.

Throughout training camp and thus far in the preseason Jacksonville head coach Urban Meyer and offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell have proven consistent in reiterating that there is an open competition between Lawrence and Minshew.

After the Jaguars’ first preseason game against the Browns last week it seemed possible the team could name the former Clemson standout and top pick in the 2021 NFL Draft the team’s starting quarterback.

But Bevell held the line in a press conference on Friday when asked if they had a starter for their preseason game on Monday against the Saints in New Orleans.

“Not at this moment,” Bevell said. “It probably is going to be Trevor but we are still continuing to talk about it.”

Lawrence completed six-of-nine passes for 71 yards against the Browns while Minshew went four-for-eight with 47 yards and an interception that closed out the first half.

However Bevell made it clear that Jacksonville will not decide its starting quarterback for Week 1 or Monday night’s game based off of preseason results.

“I’ll say it doesn’t really matter at this point. What matters is what we’re going to do here, how we’re going to handle it,” Bevell said. “We’ve talked to coach about it and we’ve given our thoughts and his thoughts, and we’ll continue kind of in that direction.”

Lawrence told members of the media in a press conference that he welcomes the competition and is not worried that the team hasn’t made a decision yet.

“No, it doesn’t bother me,” Lawrence said. “I think that’s the way to run a team, honestly. You’ve got to compete. Everyone’s job, the best player has to play, and you’ve got to compete. As a first-year player coming in, it’s kind of what’s expected. You want to compete for the job, and there’s a right way to do things. I think they’ve handled it great. We’re in a good spot and we’re just going to keep working. I’m going to take advantage of every opportunity I get, and that’s all I can really do.”

The Jaguars take on the Saints at 8 p.m. on Monday night in the Superdome, the preseason game will be televised on ESPN.

Jacksonville Jaguars waive former Georgia DB

The Jacksonville Jaguars have waived former Georgia Bulldogs safety J.R. Reed.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have waived former Georgia Bulldogs safety J.R. Reed. Reed was quite a productive player for the University of Georgia, but went undrafted in the 2020 NFL Draft. Now, he’ll look to stick with the Jaguars practice squad or sign elsewhere.

J.R.’s father, Jake, played in the NFL. It is a tough year for unproven players to make a roster. With the lack of preseason games, shortened training camp, and unusual protocols, it is even more challenging than most seasons to make the roster as an undrafted player.

J.R. was a playmaker in Athens, but there were concerns about his athletic profile heading into the NFL Draft. Reed has impressive instincts and deserves another opportunity. We’ll update you on what is next for Reed.

Here’s the full list of Jacksonville’s roster moves today, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter:

Jacksonville Jaguars sign former Georgia WR

A former Georgia Bulldog has a not-so-new home in the pros.

Former Georgia Bulldog Terry Godwin has a not-so-new home in the pros.

Godwin was drafted by the Carolina Panthers in the seventh round of last year’s NFL Draft but was among the final roster cuts prior to the beginning of 2019 season. He was quickly signed by the Jaguars, uniting in Jacksonville with fellow former Bulldog receiver Chris Conley.

The 2019 draftee wasn’t able to break into the team’s 53-man roster and spent fourteen weeks on the Jags’ practice squad. Godwin’s season ended in late December due to a minor injury.

His contract with Jacksonville expired three weeks later.

Following a recovery, the second-most famous T.G. in recent Georgia football history has re-signed with the Jaguars as a free agent.

In his four years at the University of Georgia, Terry Godwin caught 134 passes totaling to an even 1,800 yards and resulting 11 touchdown receptions, including his famed one-handed score at Notre Dame in a mutchup that resulted in a one-point Bulldog victory.

Godwin has yet to see regular season action in the NFL. His original rookie contract awarded him $2.6M over four years.

Jaguars make decision on former Georgia football WR

The Jacksonville Jaguars have made their decision on former Georgia football wide receiver.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have exercised their team options for fifth-year wide receiver Chris Conley, the club recently announced.

Conley, a former Georgia standout who was drafted in the third round of the 2015 NFL Draft, is now under contract with the Jaguars through the 2020 season.

Conley, who came to Athens as a 4-star wide receiver out of North Paulding High School, signed with the Jaguars as an unrestricted free agent prior to the 2019 season. This year, his first with the Jags, he set a career-high for receptions (47), receiving yards (775) and receiving average (16.5). He made 14 starts and appeared in all 16 games, catching five touchdowns passes, which includes a 70-yarder in a victory against the Jets, the Jaguars’ longest TD of the 2019 season.

From 2011 to 2014, during his time at Georgia, he had 1,938 yards and 20 touchdowns.

He turned heads when he produced some of the most impressive NFL Combine numbers we have ever seen, running the 40 in 4.35 seconds and then following that up with a 45 inch vertical jump.
