UFC’s Jafel Filho wants ‘battle of grapplers’ with Jimmy Flick after birth of child

Jafel Filho has more important family matters to worry about first, but when he returns to the UFC’s octagon, he wants to face a grappler.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Jafel Filho[/autotag] flexed his jiu-jitsu skills in his second-straight first-round finish at UFC Fight Night 239, and now wants a test against someone who is well-versed on the mat.

Filho (16-3 MMA, 2-1 UFC) made quick work of Ode Osbourne at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas behind a hyper-aggressive gameplan. Ultimately, it paid off in the first round, getting the win over Osbourne by a rear-naked choke. Still young in his UFC career, “Pastor,” a BJJ black belt, wants his next test to be against another solid grappler.

“I saw Jimmy Flick coming off a win, somebody who was a champion in LFA,” Filho told reporters at a post-fight news conference. “Myself a champion of Shooto, I think it would be really cool to actually have a battle of grapplers.”

Flick (17-7 MMA, 2-2 UFC) won his January outing against Malcolm Gordon by arm triangle submission, snapping a two-fight skid.

While Filho had a name ready to call out, his next fight is the least of his concerns at the moment, as his wife is due to give birth in August. Due to the fight camp, he says he could not spend time with her properly and make all of the necessary doctor’s appointments, something he intends to rectify over the coming months.

“I have never had such a hard and focused camp within the lines of training and always following the rules,” Filho said. “I think this kid, whether it’s a boy or a girl, has brought me focus, strength, and determination to do what I needed to do to come out with a win in this fight.”

UFC Fight Night 239 video: Jafel Filho dominates Ode Osbourne, finishes fight with choke

Jafel Filho made a statement at the UFC Apex as he dominated Ode Osbourne en route to a submission.

[autotag]Jafel Filho[/autotag] had himself an afternoon Saturday in Las Vegas.

A rising UFC flyweight, Filho (16-3 MMA, 2-1 UFC) put forth perhaps his most statement-making outing when he dominated [autotag]Ode Osbourne[/autotag] (12-7 MMA, 4-5 UFC) en route to a rear-naked choke submission at 4:27 of Round 1. UFC Fight Night 239 took place at the UFC Apex.

The finishing sequence came after Filho mounted Osbourne. As Filho rained down heavy ground-and-pound punches, Osbourne gave up his back. From there, Filho slipped his hand under the chin and squeezed until the tap came.

Filho has won back-to-back fights after a loss in his debut. All three of his UFC appearances have ended inside the distance.

Osbourne loses consecutive fights for the first time in the UFC. His previous outing was also a rear-naked choke defeat – that one, to Asu Almabaev.

UFC Fight Night 224 video: Jafel Filho weathers early storm, submits Daniel Barez in Round 1

Jafel Filho’s toughness was in full display before he got the finish for his first UFC victory.

LONDON – [autotag]Jafel Filho[/autotag]’s toughness was on full display before he got the finish.

Filho (15-3 MMA, 1-1 UFC) was dropped with numerous body shots by Barez (16-6 MMA, 0-1 UFC), but somehow survived. After making his way back up, Filho and Barez started exchanging bombs, with both men having success. But Filho decided to take the fight to the ground, which immediately paid dividends. He cinched in an arm-triangle choke to submit Barez at the 1:34 mark of Round 1 Saturday at The O2, in what was a wild fight while it lasted.

Check out the replay of Filho’s finish below (via Twitter):

Filho scored his first octagon win after dropping his promotional debut to Muhammed Mokaev at UFC 286 in March. The Brazilian Contender Series graduate has now won six of his past seven.
