Watch: Notre Dame running back Jadarian Price looks ready for camp

Price being healthy could be huge for the Irish offense

It surely wasn’t the first year at [autotag]Notre Dame[/autotag] that running back [autotag]Jadarian Price[/autotag] envisioned.

The Texas native ruptured his Achilles during year one and wasn’t able to contribute to the team. The running back depth was very good last season, but after Logan Diggs left the program to rejoin with Brian Kelly at LSU and [autotag]Chris Tyree[/autotag] making a position change, there is a need for someone to step up.

That could be Price, as he continues his recovery, it looks like the former 4-star is healthy enough to make an impact after seeing this video shared on Twitter.

Price looks like he’s got his explosiveness back and that could be bad news for Notre Dame opponents.

Notre Dame football: Chris Tyree makes position change

A position change to start spring camp but is it for good?

For some that pay close attention, the biggest takeaway from Wednesday’s first spring practice of 2023 hardly comes as a surprise. Instead, it felt like a long time coming, especially with the amount of talent in Notre Dame’s backfield. But rising senior [autotag]Chris Tyree[/autotag]’s days in the backfield are limited if Wednesday was any indication.

Tyree, who will be a senior this fall and sports the No. 2 instead of 25, spent Wednesday working at slot receiver.  The 5-foot-9 speedster spent his first three seasons at Notre Dame in the backfield, rushing a career-high 100 times last year for 444 yards and three touchdowns.  He hauled in 24 receptions for 138 more yards and two more scores.

So will Tyree stay in the slot or will he be in the backfield? [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] offered the following after the first spring practice:

“He’s a guy that has multiple skill sets, and we know Chris Tyree is a guy we have to have on the football field. … The ability to put him at wideout, we know what he can do as a running back, to really be a guy that can do multiple different things.”

It seems Tyree’s days in the backfield aren’t entirely done, but the writing sure seems on the wall for him to be thrown to a lot more this year. [autotag]Audric Estime[/autotag] and [autotag]Logan Diggs[/autotag] breaking out last year adds to that, as do the additions of highly regarded incoming freshman [autotag]Jeremiyah Love[/autotag] and sophomore [autotag]Jadarian Price[/autotag], who missed last year due to injury.

It’s also a way to better a wide receiver group that lacks depth. It’s seemingly improving but has a way to go before it’s anywhere near a championship level. Tyree moving to receiver helps that but the gap remains.

It should be fun to see how Tyree’s tremendous speed is utilized in the slot. How defenses have to account for it will bring a compelling dynamic.

Notre Dame players who will not play in Blue-Gold Game

You’re out of luck if you want to see these players in spring action.

The annual Blue-Gold Game is a fantastic experience for Notre Dame fans. It especially is a great opportunity for those who don’t have either the time or the money to get out to Notre Dame Stadium during the season. You get to watch your favorite Irish players in action at a fraction of the cost and without having to navigate through hoards of people whether they’re going to the game or not.

But just like with regular games, there will be players missing. For one reason or another, some of them might be seen on the sidelines but will not see any action. While that might be a disappointment to some people, it’s better to have them sit out now and not when the actual games start.

To save you any confusion and ease any disappointment that might come of these players not participating in the Blue-Gold Game, here they are:

Florida 4-Star running back has Notre Dame in his final six

The Irish could land one of Florida’s best

If there is one position for [autotag]Notre Dame football[/autotag] that there are absolutely not questions about the 2-deep in spring practice, it’s the running backs. [autotag]Audric Estime[/autotag] and [autotag]Logan Diggs[/autotag] return as one of the best tandems in the nation.

The future of the position is a bit different, but not without talent. [autotag]Jadarian Price[/autotag] is looking to get into the rotation and [autotag]Jeremiyah Love[/autotag] is on his way.

There is always a need for depth to be rebuilt and the 2024 class will most likely add another back with [autotag]Aneyas Williams[/autotag]. Florida’s [autotag]Anthony Carrie[/autotag] could be that player as he released his final six schools with Notre Dame still in the mix.

Carrie stands 6-feet and weighs 185 pounds while being rated as the 14th best running back and 192nd overall player in the country according to the 247Sports composite rankings.

Notre Dame football: Freeman leaves door open for Logan Diggs at Ohio State

How much would this help if he’s able to go?

When Notre Dame sophomore running back [autotag]Logan Diggs[/autotag] tore his labrum in the spring game this past April the assumption was that his at least first month of the 2022 regular season was over.  Fast forward a few months to the start of fall camp and although there is no guarantee that it isn’t, Marcus Freeman isn’t so certain Diggs won’t be able to go in the opener at Ohio State on Labor Day weekend.

Freeman spoke Friday after the opening practice of fall camp and discussed who would be unavailable for the opener.  He mentioned wide receiver [autotag]Joe Wilkins[/autotag], tight end [autotag]Mitchell Evans[/autotag], and running back [autotag]Jadarian Price[/autotag] but did not mention Diggs.

“Now, there’s a progression for some guys getting back. We can’t just go (from) zero and put them in there 100. So, we have some guys on limited reps. Obviously Logan Diggs and we have Marist Liufau on some limit reps today. But for the most part, those three other guys we know will be out for the first game. And then we expect those other guys that may have limited reps today to be ready to roll.” – Marcus Freeman

That certainly isn’t a guarantee by any means but it at least gives a bit of hope that Notre Dame won’t enter the Horseshoe just under a month from today with only Chris Tyree, Audric Esteem, and Gi’Bran Payne as their only available scholarship backs.

If you look at how Ohio State lost their two games last year it was from a heavy dose of the opponents running game, something Notre Dame will be looking hard to exploit in hopes of pulling the upset.

Watch: Notre Dame running back Diggs prepping for the season

Will he be the starter?

Training camp is right around the corner but that doesn’t mean players aren’t getting ready for the season. That goes for Notre Dame running back [autotag]Logan Diggs[/autotag], who is in competition for the starting spot [autotag]Kyren Williams[/autotag] left open after his departure to the NFL.

With the loss for the season of [autotag]Jadarian Price[/autotag] to an Achilles’ tendon injury, the door is open for one of the three returning backs to step up. Along with Diggs, [autotag]Chris Tyree[/autotag] and [autotag]Audric Estime[/autotag] are in the running to line up with the quarterback in the season opener against Ohio State. This video tweeted by Diggs’ trainer Albert Brock of ABX Performance, it seems as if Diggs wants that starting job.

The Irish leading returning rusher looks ready for the grind of the season. Even though there has yet to be a starter named, it appears Diggs is ready to take the mantle.

ESPN names three ‘If’s’ how Notre Dame wins the National Championship

What concerns you most for this upcoming season?

Each year every team enters the season with question marks, regardless of what their status was the year before. For many teams, the answers just aren’t there and there is no chance for them to win a title. Only a few squads across the country have a legit shot of being the last team standing, Notre Dame being one of them. ESPN looked at twenty teams title chances, ranking them by “If’s” with the Irish having just three of them (insider), according to Bill Connelly, the second best title odds in the country. These are the three question marks the Irish need to answer in order to win the College Football Playoff.

Notre Dame running back out for the year

How do you feel about Notre Dame’s running backs entering the 2022 season now?

Notre Dame freshman running back [autotag]Jadarian Price[/autotag] was supposed to make an impact this fall but now his season is already over before it even began.  Notre Dame announced that Price suffered a ruptured achilles tendon recently and underwent surgery this week.  The injury will keep him out for the entire 2022 season.

Price was a four-star running back out of Denison, Texas and enrolled early at Notre Dame this spring.  Price was one of the stars of the annual Blue-Gold Game as he totaled 116 yards on 17 touches.

The injury puts a further dent in what should be a talented running back room for Notre Dame.  Sophomore [autotag]Logan Diggs[/autotag] suffered a torn labrum in the spring game and his status for the opener at Ohio State remains unknown.

Junior [autotag]Chris Tyree[/autotag], sophomore [autotag]Audric Estime[/autotag], and freshman [autotag]Gi’Bran Payne[/autotag] are the only three scholarship backs currently healthy on the Notre Dame roster.

Blue vs. Gold Game: What we learned about Notre Dame Football

What stood out to you during the Blue & Gold game?

The next step is fall camp, but before the Irish get back to real football, we get our preview, the Blue vs. Gold game. Although most starters were held back and only played a bit, they are the known commodities. There were still plenty of take aways from the glorified scrimmage and here are some things that we learned after the spring practices.

Watch: Jadarian Price takes screen pass to house for touchdown

This was exciting.

One of the most exciting moments for any college football fan is when your team has an electric freshman. Might Notre Dame have its for 2022 in running back Jadarian Price? Only time will tell, but he just made a strong case for it in the Blue Gold Game. After catching a screen pass from fellow freshman Steve Angeli at midfield, Price took advantage of some nice blocking and, well, just watch:

The only thing more amazing than the touchdown is Marcus Freeman running after the play shouting jubilant phrases. Clearly, he sees something in Price, and those shouts appear to be his way of telling him that he knew this is what he’s capable of. We obviously won’t know how well this will translate into game action either this season or next, but this is a nice first step for him. Hopefully, this was the first of many fantastic memories he’ll have at Notre Dame Stadium.
